I'm going to rebuild my 5R55S in my mercury mountaineer all wheel drive because ur video is very detailed my I seen my dad rebuild a hundred transmissions Chevy & Ford but I was too young to understand but I been in the shop as a child I can do anything & everything but never rebuilt a transmission I always thought my dad would be here forever I guess but he's been gone for 13 years now thanks man ur videos are great
Hi Hiram, All i want to say is thank you very much. Thanks to your videos on this transmission, i was able to fix my ford explorer. Mya transmission was giving me a code for solenoid b, i replaced solenoid pack, no change. So i followed your video and replaced the overdrive components. The band was bare metal and scored the drum and planetary gear was all messed up. now is running great. You saved me at least $1800, Thanks again.
This guy Hiriem has a video of a GMC 4L80E Rebuild and I Set up a long table and put my computer in the garage and followed him set by set using a rebuild kit and the transmission is my truck and works perfectly. and has being going for the last 6 yrs now about 70, 000 miles without any problems. This guy is awesome !!! Now I Own a 2008 Mountaineer Premier and I am watching him again.
Thank you for this very informative walk-through. I now believe I can fix my 5R55S transmission myself instead of sending it back to the "Machanic" who just recently told me I would need a new transmission. Keep up the great work!!!
Hiram helped me dissasemble a 4R44E last nigh.Would never even thought of taking apart an automatic. I feel pretty confident about rebuilding it.Was all night in my sleep! Thanks Hiram!
I rebuilt my sons whole transmission, your video gave me the confidence to take it on.. Thanks Hiram.. I will let you know if it runs LOL, I am torqueing the valve body now.
Hiram, you are a genius. I've watched a number of your video (including the whole 700r4 teardown and reassembly as well as the valve body upgrades with the transgo kit). Unbelievable knowledge. keep it up!
I DEFINITELY AGREE WITH OTHER COMMENTS ABOUT HOW GREAT A TEACHER YOU ARE. YOUR VIDEOS ARE CLEAR AND CONCISE. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SHARING YOUR EXPERTISE. YOU ARE RIGHT ON POINT. I AM SO GRATEFUL TO FIND YOUR VIDEOS.
Finally a video I can relate to and understand. I just needed assurance with the pump install and I was so involved with the way he was rebuilding it, I watched the rest of the video and then watched it 2 more times. Much appreciated. Hope I get my Exploder rolling once again ! Thanks for the help and useful videos !
You do what the customer wants you to do. Happy NY Hiram. Your vids always fascinating and informative. Thanks I wish I was closer to you, I need 97 accord rebuilt.
This is oh so familiar to me. I used to have a 2002 Explorer. Of course the 5r55w that it had quit working. My brother-in-law is a diesel mechanic and helped a lot with the wrenching. Between the two of us we got it fixed. Hiram mentioned the case wearing in the tear down. That was the problem with mine. It causes the servos to quit pushing on the band with any real force. The case can be repaired with a special tool, which includes sleeving the servo bore with a brass bushing. Much better than original.
Hiram great video, i have watched a number of your videos. i enjoy watching them. your voice and some of the things you say remind me of my day in tech school the instructure had basicly the same teaching ways that your have of showing who you rebuild or repair transmissions. i thank you for your informative and easy to understand videos keep up the great work.
ow-sum video i learned a lot i dont know shit about how to repair 5r55s trans thanks to your video i did the repair my trans myself and it works great thanks again. Larry B clearlake ca
I've installed 2 transmissions 2nd one slipped in reverse. So I'm taking the reverse band out for the other transmission and with your video I'll be done with this Explorer. Thank you.. Sincerely
Enjoyed the video, again you make it look so easy. You have to give use an update as to how that trans. held up. Whether or not the customer took your advice and did something about the cooling issue. Thanks.
That's music to my ears man. Good jab as usual. Thanks for the reply. I want to add that it would have been a shame if the customer didn't put a cooler on it and have all your good work go down the drain.
🤘🤩👍 awesome! Enjoyed watching! Funny how there’s specialty tools for things I would never think suggested for 😆 You’re video gave me confidence to do this
Thumbs up! Very nice even for those of us that cant do that stuff. lol. But at least I got the idea on them fords and them bands. I have a 97 Ranger 2.3 automatic does not want to shift into gear unless fully warm. I have to give a little gas to engage after going to 1rst from reverse. Not looking forward to the inevitable.
Perron el video Hiram , tengo una pregunta arme mi tranny en 03 aviator y la manejo y una d con una raya atravesada apárese puede ser que el aceite se caliente? Gracias
I didn't see you put any check balls before you put the valve body , I'm not familiar with this trans ,so I don't know if it takes any check balls . I could have missed it because I keep getting interrupted . love the video Hiram.
Have you ever seen a servo snap ring start to come out of the groove? My explorer developed an ATF leak and I notice the snap ring was almost half way out of the groove on the large bore. I need to get a better look, but it looks like the groove is intact. I am not sure if I can just push the cap back in and reseat/replace the snap ring or if it is a sign of a much bigger problem. My servo bores were repaired about 200.000 miles ago. The transmission was working fine until the fluid leaked out.
Those snap rings are hard to remove. There's a possibility that the snap ring was not seated while installing it. If you have no issues with the transmission you can just push the servo in and seat the snap ring.
@@AutomaticTransmission Someone mentioned that it could be the valve in the pump stuck closed causing an over pressure situation. Does that sound possible to you?
Great video! Unfortunately after my rebuild I have a couple of second delay going into drive, and a 2-3 shift flare. No delay going into reverse and all other shifts are good. Went back in and put in a Sonnax solenoid pack, still the same. Any pointers on what I should check next?
Awesome video, Hiram. Did you get a new Cam? The video was so clear and bright i could almost read the white lettering on the bottom of the W-D40 cans on your bench. The sound was very good and much better than before too. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and have a great new year.
Hiram thanks for all the great videos regarding this transmission! I am almost done with my rebuild, how can I make sure my oil pump is aligned properly without the transgo alignment tool? I bought the superior kit and am kicking myself now realizing it doesn't come with an alignment tool. Let me know if there is another way without the expensive ford alignment kit, thanks!
I there a huge difference between the 5R55S and 5R55W transmissions? Can the same techniques be applied when re-assembling a 5R55W transmission? Thank you for all your hard work, wonderful advise, and Excellent Videos!
Great videos. I am working on a 2004 ford explorer XLT. I am looking to replace everything from the center mount (I believe it's called) to the pump.... the input and output shafts are good but sun shield, bands, servo etc. Need replacement. Can you possibly post a link or two on where I can purchase these? Hopefully a couple of kits will get the job done for less than it would cost to replace transmission with new or remanufactured. Thank you.
Hi Hiram, Thanks so much for your videos on the 5r55s trany. I have learned a lot from them. I been a GM technician for over 30 years I have built GM tranys but not a Ford 5r55s. I am currently overhauling one. I have a question for you. I am about to put the trany back together with a SK5r55w Transgo shift kit that you recommend installing. Do you recommend drilling the holes in the support for the overdrive sun gear and in the pump orifice with this kit?? If so what is the size of the hole that is drilled in the sun gear support and the orifice in the pump. The Transgo shift kit that I got doesn't have the drill bits and this upgrade is not mentioned in the kit . Thanks for your time, It is Greatly Appreciated!
i wish we have this in my place, repair works, i love my ford explorer sport trac, i want to maintain it in a very good condition, its with me for almost 18 years,,, now,, i have some issues in the Transmission ,,,
Hi Hiram, Great Video Series! Saved my wallet with your videos. 'Rebuilt' my 04 Explorer 5R55S tranny after broken center band. 75k miles extremely clean inside when I dropped the pan. Replace the following: Net clutch Discs New Bands, New Servos (o-ring type) New solenoid pack New Seals/gaskets I am still getting slight shudder when starting slow. More so when up to op temp, while turning steering to side. It is not PS pump. Did not check clearance on clutch discs before reassembly, Found that video later. •What is your thought on new clutch discs being the correct spec out of box? I did NOT: replace pump parts. replace Torque converter replace pressure disc on the back of one drum, Do not have compression foot operated tool you have. What are your thought on why is still causing problem. I'm ok to open it up again but I'd like to do it ONE more time, not multiple times. Thanks for sharing your knowledge with the backyard mechanics out here. Bernie Valentin
Mr. Hiram I have some trouble installing my center support. It doesn’t want to seat deep enough to install the snap ring. I’ve engaged the 5 gears like you showed but no luck
You have no idea how much you have helped me! I do have 1 question, I see you use a couple different color trans lubes, I have seen yellow, red, blue and green, what's the difference between them?
Hi Hiram,First thank you for sharing your knowledge with all of us. I enjoy watching a true craftsmen at work and you sir are a craftsmen. I have a 1996 Dodge Dakota 5.2 liter V8 2 door extended cab 2 wheel drive SLT trim package and a tow package. Can you tell me what transmission is in my truck? If the VIN number will help let me know I do not want to put it on here. The stickers under the hood are unreadable and the sticker in the door jam has no info on it.
Cool well done informative video sir. Jist bought a used 5r55s tranny to have it professionally installed in our 231000 08 explorer , 4.0. Came out of a 03, 4.6, Aviator with 83000 miles. The convertor will be used from our explorer . Sure wish they had come with a dipstick. Lol. Summit Racing has a deep pan that comes with a dipstick. PA27455KT part #. That bad boy is $292.00. Ouch. Trying to find one at a better price. You have any experience with these kits? Your vidro was insightful. Thanks for posting. Good day sir. Live long and prosper.
Like common sense thinking during the band installation tips and servo's. Special tools do have their place, but anytime it's possible to not use them is superb thinking. Knowing what you know now about this 'case', if the same torque converter is being used, isn't it just going to send contaminated fluid right back into this unit - or is there a way to flush converters?
Hey very informative video !!! One question... I need a good recommendation on a 5r55s transmission rebuild kit including bands and all the seals and bearing ?
Try Amazon... look for "Wellington Parts Corp Ford 5R55W 5R55S Transmission Overhaul Deluxe Rebuild Kit". That's the kit I used. It comes with everything except bearings.
How much did the amazon rebuild kit cost. And theres a video on drilling some oil flow hole on the over drive thing and i think it provides better lubrication and prevents that from happening
thank you it was very helpful video .I've finished rebuilding my transmission , however after installing it on the car noticed didn't put the pump washer . Do you think I can leave I like that or do I've to pull the tranny again ? thank you for your help again
Question for anyone, what controls pressure/flow to the cooler lines?? Rebuilt my trans about 3,500 miles ago with no problems everything was within spec flowing the ATSG manual, installed superior shift kit , new torque converter, and cooler. Took the car on a long car trip and no problems till the last 10 miles when the trans boiled the fluid out and was over heating.
How much would you charged to rebuild a 2006 mustang gt automatic transmission? A shop told me it would be a little over 5k for it and didn’t want to explain why.
excelente video, tengo una explorer 2008, le paso agua hacia la caja, ya le solucione la fuga de agua. y le cambie el aceite varias veces 2. que mas me sugiere
