I had a high mileage Vauxhall Victor back in the late 60s which used to pink on acceleration. I tried retarding the ignition a bit but that didn't help. It obviously needed decarbonising. Then I read about this Redex trick where you run the engine on fast tickover while gradually squirting in a pint of Redex from an oil can. When it's all gone in you take the car for a fast drive, keeping the revs high in every gear. I tried it and it really worked. The car never pinked again. On the drive a lot of smoke came out of the tailpipe, and the job is done when it stops smoking. Saved me lifting the head to clean it out, which is quite a big job.

+Michael Hadley Yes, in fairness. But, while certainly capable of engine builds, I have only ever worked on one of my own engines for repair reasons (broken piston rings caused by fueling issues (detonation)). I'm the last person to ask about reliability because I generally find my own engines are quite reliable...oops...probably said too much too soon. I'm 60,000+ miles into my Kawasaki ZZR1200 and last month I replaced the clutch; the very first time that engine (excepting service access items like the valve cover etc) has had its innards exposed to daylight. If you look after them, they look after you.

Didn’t ride my bike over Christmas then it snowed. When I started it there were splutters backfires and dropping idle fuel injection warning light came on. I added Redex and went to work, the light was still on and there was a big splutter loss of power juddering then it was like it cleared its throat. On the way back home the FI light extinguished!!! Result! If you have an older car or one that hasn’t been used in a while get a shot of Redex in her and she’ll run like a whippet on Redbull.

I agree and it would probably have been worth more HP than HT leads since everything else needed doing so badly it was probably pretty clogged. With that said it's a pain in the arse to do this on my car because it's inside the fuel tank. You have to take out the whole thing as one unit with float, pump, etc all in one big plastic piece. Can't just drop a new filter into that either, you have to replace a whole plastic part that has an inaccessible internal filter. Lots of chances to snap some old piece of plastic along the way so I just do this every 75k as per the service manual.
@SD-tj5dh

It really is all about how well you look after your engine. ALWAYS keep on top of your fluids and filters NEVER use cheap fuel in performance engines REGULARLY Keep your fuel system clean. REGULARLY monitor your battery's power and the condition of your spark plugs. Change the spark plugs with at least every other service. CHANGE ALL BELTS at the latest when the manufacturer advises you too. Another handy tip 'from mercedes source' put some super strong magnets on the base of your oil sump. Any stray shards of metal will catch onto the magnets (except for aluminium). The oil filter is also doing this job so don't keep on top of that filter too! I've had a Peugeot do nearly 300,000 miles when all the owners are keeping on top of everything.

I have used redex for many decades and when i first used it i had a car that used a lot of oil due to worn valve stem oil seals. I looked down the bore and there was a thick build up of carbon on the pistons, must have been centimeters thick, and it looked like whipped ice cream on top of the pistons When i poured redex down each bore and ran the car for a while, it all disappeared, and the piston surface was revealed, with it being all smooth and flat again. Noticed a big power increase as well. Since then i have always regulary put it in my car and always been happy it.

I recently got a Mondeo 2.0 petrol and it was lumpy under acceleration so I put the fuel cleaner in, changed the plugs, new HT leads, oil + filter and it's as good as new, all under £100. Was the claimed power 190HP, British horsepower of 746 watts each, or was it 190PS, Deutsche Pferde-Starke of 739 watts each? If the latter, you have got slightly over the claimed power after the tune-up (assuming your dynamometer isn't measuring in German). Also is the claimed power at the wheels or at the crankshaft? If at the crankshaft you are getting considerably over the claimed figure, because you are getting it after the losses in the transmission and the tyres.

The other services had nothing to do with fuel/intake system apart from the airfilter, which seemed to be almost new to begin with. It all depends on when were the last services done for each parts. My car had original leads and coils with 50k KM old spark plugs. Replacing those made a huge difference. Ive always ran an fuel system cleaner once per year. Probably this VW never had any fuel system cleaners run thru, so that made a big improvement. So I do not think there are much, if any diminishing returns here.

they are showing the key effects in performance gain order. you could stop at the fuel system cleaner, though without the cost of a dyno tester at your disposal its best to do the other service items too. if you've got the budget, change the transmission & power steering fluids (they degrade over time becoming draggy), change the fuel filter and make sure your tyres are pumped up properly (poorly inflated tyres cause extra rolling resistance).

Best way to improve performance on a relatively old car with a fair few miles on the clock is a Terraclean. It cost £110 to do my regularly serviced 2010 Ford Focus 1.6 TDCI with 100k on the clock. Best money I've spent on it, It feels like a new car and pulls like it did when new. Honestly though I was sceptical about Terraclean, but I searched out reviews on google and never found a single bad review, so I done a full service on the car, then a few days later I had the Terraclean done. It felt so weird to feel a smooth car with restored power after the clean. Genuinely, it is that good! Don't waste your money on all the snake oil crap and get a Terraclean then comment back here with your findings. I bet you'll be as happy as I am! Most of the snake oils you add to your tank just increases the octane rating making you feel/think like it's having a benefit. Then after you refill the tank it returns to normal. This does not happen with a Terraclean, it's a permanent true internal fuel system clean, I've refilled since as usual with normal diesel and everything is still the same. Powerful and smooth! Highly recommended from me.

I wonder how much of this is the car was driven sedately for a long time and then was driven harder during the week of treatment. Therefore alot of clearing out was as a result of being used as intended and nothing to do with the treatment? Obviously it COULD be the treatment and we will never know for sure. But great to see the gains and almost like new output :)

how much. £73 for 6 plugs I've just brought two bike ones £2.30each. less than a fiver for 3hp.

They should have changed the transmission fluid as well.
@plonkster
@plonkster 9 лет назад
Boodieman72 It depends. It's a British car so very likely a manual transmission. Since the oil in a manual transmission is not exposed to the by products of ignition, and they use a large magnet in the bottom to hold the larger bits of iron filings, chances are there'd be very little to be gained by swapping the gearbox oil. On most cars that I've owned you swap gearbox oil maybe once every 80 000km, usually around the time you do the clutch :-)

@jimdavis8391 8 лет назад
+plonkster You're mixed up there. Auto transmissions do not 'share' oil with the engine. A few manual transmissions do, for example the gearbox in sump BMC 'A' series in minis.

+Jim Davis Aaah I see your point. I have no idea why I wrote that comment that way 3 months ago, because it seems to imply that the transmission flood in an automatic IS exposed to combustion elements. You are right of course that it isn't, and I know that well! :-) I think my point was that because a manual transmission has nothing but gear oil -- which also doesn't degrade due to exposure to combustion -- there is often very little to be gained by replacing it. Automatic transmissions on the other end needs fluid replacement a bit more often... or so I am told (Automatics are rare in South Africa too). So in the context of the original comment, my point was that on a manual transmission, it would probably help less than it would on an automatic.

Wonder how many horses would be unleashed if they had bothered to change the fuel filter first? Ever hacksawed one of them in half and taken a look? 50,000 miles of petrol and they need changing otherwise you can get low pressure at the injectors.

Camshafts wear and lose lift, that is the biggest source of lost power. I measured a standard Rover V8 cam that had lost 50 thou of lift in 50k miles.

+Donald Sayers What about engines with roller followers like the FA20 engine? Would that loose lift over time?
@donaldasayers
@donaldasayers 8 лет назад
+KiwiPowerNZ I have no experience of that particular engine. Conventional engineering wisdom is that roller rocker have to accelerate and decelerate every time they pass over a cam lobe and some slipping always occurs, so they wear. Also the pivots the rollers rotate on can wear. In the past roller rockers were only used on short lifetime highly tuned engines. I guess engineering moves on. I would bet they last longer than Rover 3.5 ones do.

First add redex, then after that has been completely run through engine change fuel filter, change air filter and clean maf sensor and throttle body, do an oil and oil filter change , change spark plugs and wires/coil pack, YOU WILL SEE AMAZING RESULTS TO ENGINE
