5th Gen 2016 Outback 3.6R with WRX mufflers - finished comparison

OEM mufflers from a 2017 WRX bolted up on my 2016 Outback 3.6R, but some slight modifications had to be made to clear the bumper cover. I had a shop cut off the tips and then add in a short section of pipe to help angle them down. A little bit of the plastic on the bottom of the bumper cover needed to be trimmed to accommodate the extra width from the extra tip, but this was quickly resolved with a pair of shears. The same modification can be done with a 5th gen 2.5, in which case you would only need to do the left side. Sound is nice and subtle, only slightly louder than stock but with a deeper/throatier tone. No perceptible drone at any speed.

I’m going to have to look into this for my 2015 Outback 3.6r. I’ve already swapped out the rear sway bar with the STi sway bar (they are a direct fit no mods needed) and I’ve added a strut tie bar from SSD. Those 2 things tightened up the handling, then I installed 4 cross drilled and slotted rotors (also direct fit). Some time later I learned that the larger Ascent rotors and calipers can be fitted onto the Outback with very light mods and I wished I had done that before replacing all 4 rotors. It’s amazing how many parts are interchangeable between the different Subaru models, I love that about Subaru.

It’s a pretty great mod, I will say though. The STi stock mufflers are pretty damn quite, louder than the stock outback ones… but quite. They give you a little grunt in the cabin. I ended up having a shop cut out the mid-muffler and that increase the sound a good amount without being obnoxious. I’ve put 10k miles on the car sense then, only a little bit of drone. My largest complaint with removing the mid-muffler is it does get raspy on cold start/ acceleration. I believe adding a resonator in place of the mid muffler would give you the extra sound without the rasp. I’m either gonna get a cheap on welded in or try and fit a stock STi mid-pipe to the car. The WRX owners complain of the same rasp, and a lot of them swap to STi mid-pipes as they have a built in resonator.

I did the same conversion on my 2020 XT, worked great. just used longer rubber hangers tips cleared the bumper with just a slice of trimming!! sounds great.

Just did the same on my 2018 3.6 and I have pretty bad drone from ~900-1200 RPM. Only difference I see is my tips are more tucked up under the bumper after getting turned down. Anybody else experience the same?

I'm going to pick up some nice 2021 wrx mufflers for this mod today. Do you happen to remember what size pipe you used to extend the tips and angle them? Would be a huge help, thanks.

I've found a local welder to turn the tips down for me. $180 for 8 welds. Paid $100 for the mufflers

I just got mine done this weekend, fair warning it’s not as loud as you think it is. It’s not bad at idle and super slow acceleration. But after 10-15mph you can’t hear it. I might open my muffler and remove the baffles to try and increase sound
@timwong3532
@timwong3532 3 года назад
@@austinsdarkhalo good luck, let us know how that goes. I'm pretty happy with the sound as is, but it's for sure not as loud as a Nameless or LP. Did you get a shop to help you turn down the tips? How much did that run you if you don't mind sharing?
@wayngro77
@wayngro77 3 года назад
Awesome!!! Do you think you could just get away with longer hangers instead of cutting the tips?
@austinsdarkhalo
@austinsdarkhalo 3 года назад
After doing the install, I’d say yes. I wish I would have went this route rather than cutting the tips. Because the cheap exhaust shot I went to installed them slightly crooked lol. For a little extra sound you can remove the mid muffler with a straight pipe. It will add a bit of sound without being obnoxious. I’d probably recommend a resonator in its place, either welded in or the STi mid-pipe (it might fit, haven’t confirmed yet). Because with the mid-muffler gone it gets raspy in mid-range when the engine is cold.
