I tried to cold blue my steel bumper, and it didn't go as planned. Bumper is the low profile hidden winch bumper from C4 Fabrications with the high clearance additions. It is paired with a 30 inch single row light bar from Extreme LED and a Badlands Apex 12000 LB winch from Harbor Freight. I used Birchwood Casey Super Blue for the cold blue process and Sharkhide metal Protectant as a clear coat.

thinking of putting a C4 on my 4runner, good for you in putting it all together, i have a bad back so i can't put it on myself, sorry to see that rust show up, after all that work. I think powder will be the way to go.

Thanks! Yeah I will be powder coating it real soon. The rust didn't really progress at all during the summer, but now that it's winter again it's gotten real rusty so I'll be tackling that project soon.

Thanks! No I didn't have to move it, just adjust the AC and PS lines a little.

I know C4 says it can’t, but it seems the high clearance ends could be used with other hybrid front bumpers?

It may be possible but I don't think it's going to be a direct bolt on application which is why they say they don't work with other bumpers. But I'm sure with some minor adjustments they should fit together.

Cool video ! Think I can use high clearance without bumper? Can I weld it on or make a bracket?

Thanks! The high clearance additions bolt directly to the lo pro bumper, and the bumper replaces the factory bumper. Without it there is nothing under there for the high clearance additions to attach to. Is it possible to build a bracket, sure but is it the best option, no probably not. Hope this helps!

okay its been 8 mos.... where is this blued bumper at today in late 2021?

Lol, it's on my 4runner nice and rusty. Rust progression isn't bad during summer here in Michigan and I needed to collect scrap materials to build a powder coating oven big enough to fit the bumper. I believe I have collected enough scrap so I will be starting that project soon! Ish!

Hi again. Just got the same winch as you. Question, how do you reach the lever to turn on and off the spool ? And can you reach in to plug in remote? I know it’s also wireless. Thx

I can reach the disengage lever through the cut out in the bumper. I can get my fingers almost to the plug port, maybe longer, skinnier arms. If I had to I could probably pop open the rubber grommet with a screwdriver and make a stretch to plug it in, but it would be a good idea to keep an extra set of batteries for the remote.

Hi. I have the same bumper and lights coming next month. I was looking for a winch so I emailed them and 5ey said the badlands apex would not fit that I needed to use warn winches. How has your winch been holding up? I have a 21 4Runner trd pro

It's holding up great, though I have only used it a few times so far. It fit fine for me, I had to slightly bend the AC lines and I had to loosen the PS line brackets to adjust the line a bit. But the head unit can be relocated as well if needed. My year 4Runner doesn't have the adaptive cruise control, but that may be something you need to consider. Hope this helps!

Lol, thanks! Yeah my hair grows fast, and I cut it myself which means it doesn't happen often. I might get a switch pro eventually but I was only adding one switch at the moment, so this was cheaper!

Yes, but only slightly. For the winch I installed I only needed to move them a couple of centimeters. The AC is easy, just gently move it while taking caution not to kink it. The PS line I think I just needed to loosen a bracket and rotate it a little bit. Hope this helps!

Robert, i ordered the SSO slimline hybrid bumper, guess similar to one you mentioned in your previous comment. did you install HF badland winch with it. if so how did it fit, or did you relocate the control box. please let me know.

@@pbaireddy I'm familiar with the SSO, very similar to the C4. I did install the badlands winch with my C4 bumper, and I didn't relocate the control box. But I did have to slightly nudge an a/c line and power steering line (if I remember correctly) out of the way a little.

Oh man, that’s terrible. But, thanks for sharing. I guess that could have been predicted - - I know leaving a blued revolver outside would result in it quickly rusting. Blueing just isn’t that a resilient a process to protect against moisture. By the comments, you can tell a lot of people did not finish watching the video.

Yeah I wasn't relying on the cold blue process for rust protection. I cold blued it solely for the look. I then used a clear coat metal protectant that was supposed to be the best but obviously didn't work for me. I will be trying a different clear coat soon because I really like the cold blue look. Yeah I know, that's why I used a metal protectant clear coat. I didn't use the cold blue for rust prevention I used it because I liked the way it looked.
