A lot of folks switch to the aluminum oil filter housing cap. There is a certified Toyota mechanic that has a channel called "The Car Care Nut" and he says there's nothing wrong with the plastic oil filter cap. As long as you follow the torque specs and use the proper oil filter cap wrench, it should last for the life of the vehicle. I agree with him. I use the Motivx MX2320-US wrench which is made in the USA to 64.3mm to engage with the 14 flutes. It is similar to the one you have but possibly less expensive though I'm not sure.

“The car care nut” is totally right, I could have told you that. As long as you use proper care on removal and installation, the plastic one should last the life of the vehicle. I have the Motivx, which I show in the video. 👍🏻 (That would be the recommended tool) I appreciate you watching!

So I would really like to know where you got that shirt. Also, thank you very much for the content. I usually have done most of my own work on my vehicles in the past, but this is my first Toyota, and for some reason that I can’t explain they just seemed a little more complicated. With your channel I am finding out that it is not that bad. Thanks again.

Paul, 2 questions...1.what are your thoughts on adding Marvel Mystery Oil when doing an oil change? 2. Since I live in Florida, can I use 5W30 oil instead of 0W20?
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 24 дня назад
I wouldn’t add anything to the oil unless you’re flushing it right after. In warm weather you could perhaps run a thicker oil. Lots of my viewers do it. 👍🏻

Great video, will switching to the metal cap on a 4Runner under warranty cause any issue with the warranty? Thanks for taking your time to make these videos!
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 2 года назад
Your very welcome. Telling you to modify your vehicle while under warranty, is ok ;would be wrong. Quite frankly as long as you use the oem aluminum one and swap the center shaft properly . You should be fine, they won’t even notice. It’s a Toyota part 🤷🏼‍♂️

Do you have any tips on how to get a good reading from the dipstick? Mine almost always appears to read high but I know I did a full drain and exactly put in 6.6 quarts.

Best tip I can give you, is always ensure vehicle is in a flat surface
@AG4runner

That dome piece is definitely different between the plastic and aluminum housing. I see people doing this swap and not swapping the dome piece. I wonder if there is any functional difference between the two. They are similar but definitely different

The dealer over-tightened my cap A LOT and it ended up getting a hairline crack in it during removal which seemed fine until I pushed it on the highway on my way to vacation. Ended up losing all of my oil and nearly destroying my engine. My personal mechanic swapped it over to metal, which he said he's done on a few other 4runners without issues. It drove the long drive without issue and tackled a lot of mountain hills, but I ran into traffic and I had the P0014 code come back (which is what showed up when I ran out of oil). I think I've lost a small amount of oil but it isn't very low. Also I CANNOT remove my oil cap for whatever reason. Do you know if you can get that perforated tube from Toyota? I am skeptical and don't think he actually swapped the perforated tube and rather threw it away and installed the new one.
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 4 месяца назад
Sorry to hear about all your troubles. That tube comes with the filter housing, not sold separately. You would have to buy the complete housing. Best of luck!!

I see you have a quart of Lucas Oil Stabilizer along with your 6quarts of oil. Is it fair to assume you'd recommend adding a quart during an oil change as a preventative measure for higher mileage vehicles?
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 5 месяцев назад
Not quite, but I do check the oil level every other week. I do drive a lot. Usually, if ever I do not need to add any oil.

Do you have any idea why there are so many different part numbers for oil at Toyota? I searched 0w20 on the Toyota parts store and came up with 10 matches. For example, what's the difference between #00279-0W202-01 "0W20 Motor Oil - GTMO" and #00279-0WQTE-01 "Gtmo 0W20 Qt Sn Wty"? The latter is what the local dealer told me was the "correct" part number.

Hey Viking, I have a question I was hoping you could help me with. I replaced my plastic oil filter housing with the metal one and change the insert over from the plastic one to the metal one like you showed I got my filter from the dealer for my specific truck and I have a gap when I push the filter down about a quarter inch of the tube is above the filter. What are your thoughts?
@VikingsGarage

They sold you the wrong filter. 💯 Double check the part number, I guarantee you got the wrong one.

Thanks just Subscribed! I notice you have an S2000, I have a 2007 S2000 in Red! I just purchased a used 2022 4Runner SR5! My previous vehicle was a 2007 Rav4, V6, AWD, Sport (Very Quick). When I first tried engaging DAC, and ATRAC it did not engage? Apparently there must be a certain way of going about it? In the Rav4, I would just put it in Low Gear and push the DAC button and it would work! I tried the same procedure in the 4Runner and I just see blinking indicator lights? What is your method?

@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 8 месяцев назад
@BroBob1254 while in 4low that will blink , that’s to let you know the system is engaged. Perfectly normal, I wasn’t sure if that’s what you were referring too. Your system is working as designed.
@BroBob1254
@BroBob1254 8 месяцев назад
Just tried it and if I go right to 4LO it does not engage, I just get a Blinking light, but if I go to 4Hi first , the 4WD indicator light goes solid, then I go to 4LO and it will go solid, then I can go to DAC, or ATRAC and they go solid. To disengage I must be stopped in Neutral and Reverse the process. Pretty confusing??? @@VikingsGarage

Ty! Getting ready for this on mine. Capacity is 6.6 quarts with Oil Filter, are we ok to add the 6.6 quarts at once? I wonder why some people add 6, then run the engine, and adjust to add the remaining .6 after the first 6 quarts were added? Any suggestions? To me seems like the process is being prolonged 🤷‍♂️
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 11 месяцев назад
Add 6.6 quarts all at once. Start engine, then double check that level is ok. Done 👍🏻
@4Runner21
@4Runner21 11 месяцев назад
@@VikingsGarage awesome! I did just this, yesterday. Checked my oil this morning on cold engine and noticed level is at about 1/2 ways between both points. Do you think that is a good measurement at cold check since the oil will expand at operating temps? I put exactly the 6.6 quarts with new OEM oil filter. Also I noticed on another video you advised you only change your oil filter every other oil change. I plan to change my oil every 3,000 - 3500 miles with this WalMart Super Tech 0W20 full synthetic oil, do you think I’m ok to change the OEM filter every other oil change like you do also? Thank you for all the advice and awesome content!
@VikingsGarage
@VikingsGarage 11 месяцев назад
@4Runner21 Yeah, change that filter every other, they are super resilient. As far as the oil level, if it’s been sitting and cold and it’s half way… add 1/4 of a quart or even less, to bring it to just below the top line. 👍🏻👏🏻

Appreciate all the tips. I do have a question if ya don’t mind about the oil filter. I’m changing the oil in mine for the first time since I finally have access to a lift, and being I’m in a wheelchair I’m actually able to do it. Went to grab Mobil 1 extended performance and they have a bundle deal which basically gives a free filter, but it’s the Mobil 1 extended performance filter. Is there anything wrong with using it over an OEM one? I’m using OEM for everything else, but figured I’d ask. Much appreciated
