5W30 vs 5W40 Oil: Which One Should You Be Using?. Wondering whether to use 5W30 or 5W40 motor oil? Learn the key differences between these multi-grade motor oils. Discover how factors like climate, engine type, age, and manufacturer specs help determine which viscosity grade works best for your vehicle. Get tips from automotive experts on choosing the optimal oil to maximize performance, efficiency, protection and mileage based on your specific driving conditions.
When comparing 5W30 and 5W40 motor oils, the main differences lie in their viscosity ratings and the operating temperature ranges they are designed for.
Viscosity: Both 5W30 and 5W40 are multi-grade oils. The '5W' in both indicates the viscosity of the oil in cold temperatures (winter), meaning they have a viscosity grade of 5 in cold temperatures, which is good for cold starts. The difference is in the second number. '30' in 5W30 signifies that this oil has a lower viscosity at high temperatures compared to 5W40. '40' in 5W40 means it has a higher viscosity at high temperatures.
Temperature Range: Due to the higher viscosity at higher temperatures, 5W40 oil is typically better suited for extreme climates and heavy-duty operations, like hauling or towing, and high-performance engines. It provides better protection at higher engine temperatures. On the other hand, 5W30 is more suitable for lighter-duty engines and milder climates. It offers better fuel efficiency due to its lower viscosity in operating temperatures.
Engine Compatibility: It's important to use the oil recommended by the vehicle's manufacturer. Using 5W40 instead of 5W30 could potentially cause issues in engines not designed for the higher viscosity, particularly in terms of oil flow and engine protection.
Performance: In engines where either oil is suitable, 5W40 can provide better protection in high-stress or high-temperature conditions, while 5W30 can offer better fuel economy and may perform better in colder climates.
Approval Ratings and Specifications: Always check for industry-standard specifications like API, ACEA, and manufacturer approvals to ensure compatibility with your vehicle's requirements.

My 2017 Range Rover Sport sdv8 4.4 diesel has done 115k UK miles, so I’m thinking of changing from the 5W30 c1 every 16k to 5W40 c4 every 8k, we only get under 10c in the winter here on the UK south coast

My humble opinion about this, is that 5-30 fits in colder weather (around 10C and lower) and 5-40 when its hot weather. This to protect the engine against thinning of oil when summer. In normal driving conditions, that is.

100% Agree! I use 5W40 a lot because of the fact that I stay in hot climate.

And dont get me started on the 0-20 and thinner oils, they are just around so manufacturers can say their engine uses slightly less fuel. But the downside is shortened engine life, and add to that low tension piston rings, and you have got an oil burner aswell, which eventually will destroy the cat etc.
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 6 месяцев назад
You're hitting the nail on the head! Thinner oils like 0-20 are indeed primarily designed to improve fuel efficiency. However, it's a trade-off because they can contribute to quicker wear and tear in the engine due to less protection, especially in harsh conditions. It's a complex balance for car manufacturers between efficiency and long-term engine health

@@HonestMechanicChannel 0w20 fully synthetic engine oil is rated at 104 degrees farenheit which is 40 degrees celcius for external temperatures and 212 degress farenheit which is 100 degrees celcius for internal engine temperature so it will protect in hot weather.

Hey i humbly request you to answer my questions I own VW polo TDI 1.2 2013 and engine running at 50k kms exact In india..In my city temperature can reach upto 47 48... And as low as 8 or 9 But i dont use my car much in summers. I dont drag my car...i dont want much performance... If a go somewhere i cruise at 80-90kmph max...i just demand some smoothness and mileage and longer life of engine so which engine oil i can use 5w30 or 5w40 vw suggest 507 00 / 505 01 so what would be better ? 2. When previously serviced at 42000km my mechanic uses 5w30..if i use 5w40(if you suggest ) this time wouldn't it effect my car ? Because even after drainage appx 500ml of previous oil still lefts...

I live in an area with frequent stops, so I'm sure I'd be fine with 5W30 but I have an older 2014 BMW mileage is a bit up there so I use 5W40 to help lubricate the parts better. Plus its summer so temps will be starting to get hotter.
@attilagal6672
@attilagal6672 Месяц назад
your engine runs at 90 degrees! The outside temperature does nothing to your engine. It's only relevant until your engine gets warm withing 5-10 minutes. After that your engine will be running around 80-90 Celsius regardless of the outside temperatures!

For Hyundai Elantra, the manufacturer recommends 5w30. However, I drive in hot weather and its summer already, would it be better if I use 5w40 instead?
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 2 месяца назад
Hi Amir, for your Hyundai Elantra, sticking to the manufacturer's recommended oil viscosity is usually the best practice, as it is tailored to the engine's design and typical operating conditions. However, using a slightly thicker oil like 5W-40 in extremely hot climates can sometimes be beneficial, especially if you experience oil thinning or if the vehicle is subjected to severe driving conditions (such as frequent stopping and starting, or heavy towing). If you decide to switch to a 5W-40, ensure it meets the specifications and standards required by Hyundai for your engine. You might also want to consult your owner’s manual or speak with Hyundai service advisor to ensure that using a different viscosity won't affect your engine's performance or your warranty.

Hi.I have cheverlot optra petrol 1.6 litre engine.I use 5w-30 oil as it is recommended by manufacturer.However now I am looking to upgrade to 5w-40 oil as I have issues with bearings clearances .so should I go for 5w-40 to overcome above challenges even though 5w-40 is not recommended in my owner manual.Please advise.Thanks.

If you already have issues with bearings clearances, another oil will not fix it! Get it repaired and THEN change to 5W40 to prevent another damage in the future.

Manufactured recommend 5W 30W but where I am using temp is usually 37 to 45C..which oil you recommend? Thanks
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel Месяц назад
Hi, You can use the manufacturer's recommended 5W-30 oil, as it is designed to perform well across a range of temperatures. However, for consistently high temperatures between 37 to 45°C, 10W-30 or 10W-40 may provide better high-temperature protection. Always ensure the oil meets the manufacturer's specifications.

During summer: yes! For winter it depends on the lowest temperatures you have in your region. If it goes down to -5°C or lower, you should use the 5W30 for the winter period.

Which is better for hot wheather condition
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 5 месяцев назад
For hot weather conditions, it's best to use an oil with a higher viscosity rating to ensure adequate lubrication and protection of your engine components. Multigrade oils, such as 10W-30, 10W-40, or even 20W-50, depending on your manufacturer's recommendation, are commonly used. These oils are designed to have a higher viscosity at operating temperature, which is crucial for maintaining proper lubrication in hot conditions. Always refer to your vehicle's owner's manual for the specific oil viscosity recommended for your engine and climate conditions.

Ok..Great Idea..0w-30 or 0w-40..Both Class 4 Synthetic Oil..Far better than 5w30-40.....
@HonestMechanicChannel
@HonestMechanicChannel 4 месяца назад
Choosing between 0W-30 and 0W-40, both of which are Group IV synthetic oils, indeed offers a significant performance advantage over a 5W-30 of the same class. The "0W" viscosity rating ensures excellent performance in cold temperatures, improving engine start-up during winter. The choice between 30 and 40 ultimately comes down to the specific recommendations of your vehicle manufacturer and the typical operating conditions (e.g., temperature range, engine load).
