6.1 How to make an eye in double braided Polyester rope 

I don't understand, how can it be solid ? Why does it not undo itself when you pull a heavy charge on the eye ?

Hi Colin, I understand your fustration. In case ropes are too tightly braided by the manufacturer splicing is not possible or requires special tools like a softfid (www.premiumropes.com/softfid) for pasing the core beyond the other core. The cover to core strength ratio is roundabout 40/60. So it's very important you splice the cover aswell. Use larged fid possible.

Yes, for climbing there can be different techniques and not all ropes can be spliced

The balans of the construction is different. This construction of polyester ropes(in general) is 50% core and 50% cover. The material has the same strength. The ropes are spliced accordingly. You need the cover to be part of the strenght. Ropes with a Dyneema core are different in balans and the core is much stronger. That's why the splices are different.

In what possible application are you going to be running this type of eye splice through a sheave? This isn't a reeving splice.

Speakssoftly is correct….core should be tapered. When a halyard is run up the mast the splice is often times close enough and sometimes does enter a block or masthead sheave.

Yes, you can use this for double braided nylon as well

George for a double braided polyester rope the strength ratio is roughly 40-60, so 40% for the cover and 60% for the core. So you have to splice both in order to retain as much of the original break load. Whereas with double braided Dyneema ropes the core alone gives 90% of the total strength

We use a double braid polyester rope. In the video we use our Dockline (www.premiumropes.com/dockline) and that is for mooring. If you have other purposes, you could also use our Cruiser XTS rope for this splice: www.premiumropes.com/cruiser-xts

Most of the time the needles might get stuck in the core at this specific point. If you can pull the core you know that the needles is running free from it. Try to do this step carefully. I had more success pulling it thro with a D splicing needle

We recommend to use the 13mm Selma needle. www.premiumropes.com/selma-individual-needles

We use the Selma fits. The size(length) of these fits are related to the diameter of the rope and length of the splice. The sizes vary from 11,5cm to 28,5cm. Splices will be strong enough when using the Selma fids and related sizes.

Splicing diameters can be difficult. Depending on the brand and tyoe of rope it's possible to do so. However not for all ropes.

8mm hollow knitting needle cut on a 70 angle tp Fid length works well

You could do it like in video 7.1/7.2 . Only polyester is a lot less strong then a Dyneema or Stirotex fiber. So we would advice not to do this with Polyester because the breaking straight is drastically reduced. so we would advice keeping the cover, or go to a Stirotex or Dyneema rope.

Yes you can. The size of the Selma fid depends on the diameter of the rope, not on the length of the eye.

@@Premiumropes Thank you for the reply! That makes sense thank you. So this splice would probably come undone if you used it for double braided Dyneema, because the core wouldn't be buried enough into the rope?

@@Premiumropes I have your really good splicing book as well and for the covered Dyneema loop splice it uses thin rope. Why do you use lots of loops of thin rope over a single loop of thicker rope? Thanks

That would be above 90%.

you could splice a rope like this to the last link of a chain, For a anchor chain for example.

I certainly wouldn't trust this to use to pull anything. The only strength in the rope now is the outer jacket.

When done properly, an eye-splice will only reduce the rope strength by 5-10%.

depending a bit on the size of the boat, but for bigger boats we really recommend a halyard with a superfiber core!

@@Premiumropes I see, Its a 27 foot boat, and the rope is double braid polyester and should hold 1700kg UNspliced. So I guess If I do it like you show in this vid. It should hold 90% of that with an Eye splice?

Do not follow these instructions, go to sampsons site and use their instructions. It will be a hell of a lot harder, as you will have to weave the strands of the core, but you will not plunge to your death!

We never used this fid before. Looks like it's made special for winchlines. You might be able depending on the diameter, but it seems that the fid is a bit long for splicing double braided ropes.

There is a ratio between the size of the fid and the rope. We use a bigger fid if the rope diameter increases. The Selma needles, like used in the video, are in balance with this ratio. The length of the fid determines the length of the splice. While splicing the actual length is less important. A long needle however isn’t always practical depending on the size of the rope and eye. The difference between the fids is the way in which the ropes is attached to the fid. We prefer the Selma fids because it’s easy to put the line into the fid and you can use them without a pusher. Both fids will do the job.

But I wasn’t asking about the diameter of the fid, I was asking about length. Essentially, a longer fid would bury the splice longer and create a more secure splice, wouldn’t it?

A longer fid will indeed bury the splice longer but there is a maximum effectiveness. Therefore we advice to follow the length of the Selma fid which suits best to the diameter of the rope.

Could it be that you accidently picked up a few fibres of the core with your splicing fids? We always advise to slide the smooth side of the fid along the core to avoid that. Another option is to use a Softfid for this step (www.premiumropes.com/softfid )

No. Take one step back where you pull the cover from C to D. When that is done, you then just close thereafter (where the cover stops) insert the needle with the core. In this video you see that it is a couple of centimers afway from mark A

@@Premiumropes Sorry but unless you go back in at Point A you don't get an eye the size you measured out in the first instance. I'm trying to do this to include a thimble and it's too big every time using these instructions.

@@andyca15 It really depends what kind of ropes you use. Some ropes have more slack between the core and the cover. In that case you'll end up with a smaller eye. Depending of the rope the amount of slack you have to use can change.

That is just because the cover and core are not used exactly alongside.

I think it is because the cover has to go round a double-sized diameter, at the point just before the eye of the splice, so what it uses up in diameter it loses in length.

Peter there is no actual lock. The tension on the loop will hold the splice in place or in extreme cases even makes the loop a little smaller. To keep the loop into place withouit any tension you put a whipping on there.

I guess I should rephrase - I know there is no actual lock. What does it mean 'to lock the core'? At 4:45

That means that you have accidently picked up the original core with the fid. So the two cores can't slide next to eachother

Ah... That explains why it was nearly impossible for me to pull my last fid through last week. I just powered through, which seems to have made the working of the splice into is final shape much more difficult too.

Hi, the technique is the same for tighter braided ropes. But not all ropes can be spliced. For some it's even impossible. The same applies for used ropes.

Mark B nicely ends up with point A. In order to reach this cover is put into the core from point C' to point D'. For all measurements the same fid size should be used. This is a very good and strong way to make the splice. There are some variations existing to this technique.

You can make the eye as large as you like.

the size of the fid indeed depends on the diameter of the rope but also on the braiding.
