I don't get it. Why do people have such strong negative opinions about the 6.5 Creedmoor? I found the cartridge to be quite Versatile, fun to shoot and suitable for small to medium game. Rifle is Bergara B14 BMP. Load development is 129 grain Hornady Interlock with StaBall 6.5 powder.

When the 6.5 Creedmoor came out, it was touted by the writers and folks that understood what it was and why it was developed. Your average deer hunter and shooter looked at the specs didn't understand what all the hoopla was for when clearly their old '06 and .270 outperformed it. And in reality, if you already have one of those calibers and like it there is no reason to trade it in for a Creedmoor. What the Creedmoor is is the first commercial cartridge developed by championship marksmen and Hornady to optimize high BC projectiles with fast twist barrels, along with chamber and throat tolerances that reflects the capabilities of modern CNC technology. All in a compact package that allows you to fit those long bullets in a short action magazine, and gives decent barrel life. The concept of starting slower and finishing faster is a hard one to wrap your head around but that's what the Creedmoor does. It's very easy to control, most rifles shoot it extremely accurately due to the chamber, throat and barrel being specced out right from the very beginning. I was an early adopter of the.260 Remington. Yes, it's a fact that the .260 is about 150fps faster but that's in a custom rifle with a custom chamber and throat. Reality is that the long BC bullets have to be seated too deeply in the .260 to fit in a magazine, negating any real velocity advantage. That and most will find the accuracy nodes for both calibers is 75-150fps off maximum, their performance is nearly identical.

Brian, Yeah I know, but 4350 is very hard to get even in good times, therefore, Rel-16, Win 760 and Superformance have been my test powders because they also are versatile powders. I hope Sta-Ball works out well. There is a common bias with reloaders against "Ball powders." But I surely do like them.

That's some really good shooting and it is a great performer for accuracy and longer distance shooing on targets. I own one myself as I was looking for a nice package from Savage with a diamond back scope fluted and threaded barrel special stock and it was 600 with taxes. I couldn't pass it up so I drove for two hours and visited my son in Owensboro KY. It was at their Academy Sports outfitters he checked it out before I went down there to get it.

I'm a convert also. My son and his wife started shooting a Tikka and a Bergara in 6.5Cm many years ago, absolute deer slayer. It was just another flavor of the week to me after shooting National Match for 30 years with my Garands and M1a's. They beat me up so much I found a friend with a Savage 12FV in 6.5Cm that hated the 26" heavy barrel and stated it wouldn't shoot. Long story short he never cleaned it, I took it home for $300. After a week of scrubbing I loaded up some Ammo with some old 748 I had and some cheap PPU 120gr OTM bullets I got from Graf's, cheapest I could find and mounted a Vortex 6x24x50 on it. After a very short break in to familiarize myself with the rifle it put it's first 5 rounds sub 1/2moa at 100. I loaded up some rounds with some 760, same result just faster. All with a mid charge of powder loaded at a COL of 2.750". I had 3lbs of StaBall 6.5 so I loaded up some with the 123gr Hornady Interlock, same result, the only powder the rifle wouldn't shoot was the Superformance. I went back to the 120gr PPU bullets and that rifle, Tupperware stock ad all, if I do my part, using 748 powder shoots 3/8moa on a regular basis and the StaBall is right there too. At 300 my failings become abundantly clear with my heartbeat giving me fits but that is no fault of the rifle or round and it's comparatively cheap to shoot. What's not to like ?

6.5 Creedmoor Is an excellent caliber. It gets a lot of hate because so many went gaga over it early on. Additionally there still exists a prejudice with many against mm nomenclature and 'European' calibers. Many resent the dearth of available ammunition too. I warrant not many who own and shoot 6.5 Creedmoor have abandoned it. I'm very happy with my Winchester Mod 70 Supergrade and it shoots any good factory ammo reasonably accurately.

Having pushed the limits of this cartridge over 2200 yards. I've always said the Needmoor is a great cartridge and yes there's better choices for those distances. What the Creedmoor offers is the ability to push the limits of the shooter with a less picky round. Reading some of the comments (entertaining) what folks arnt talking about is the availability of the cartridges in their rebuttal.... as of today 6.5 Creedmoor ammo can be bought at any major online retailer. As for components, well buy the ammo and save the brass. Powders like Hybrid 100v, R16, R17, SW Long Shot, 6.5 Staball, IMR or H4350, N550, IMR Enduron. I can keep listing powders that all work well from expirence in this caliber

You cant deny its a good round for what it is. I just got sick of all the fan boys and wannabes talking about it. The over exaggeration of its capabilities was also off-putting and made me sick of hearing about it. It made me not want one honestly. I ended up going with the 6.5x47 lapua instead. It's nothing new either, so when it started gaining popularity and all the hype started, I was like come on people its not the only one. But, I think the ammo and twist rate selection from rifle manufacturers provides something for people that don't reload and don't have custom built rifles that the 260 and 6.5x55 swede didn't offer. That's what seems to seperate it.

What's wrong with the 6.5 Needmore is not so much the gun/cartridge but the people who are misusing it. Folks are trying to bump off elk at 400 yds or worse with it. The wildcat .250 Savage AI comes closest to resembling the 6.5. A mere .007" difference in bullet diameter. NOBODY is hunting elk with a .250 Sav AI. Yes, the bullets are far sleeker and so carry their energy much better in 6.5. Still. I had a 6.5 CM for awhile. I shot it. I yawned. I sold it. Out to 400-500 yds (sensible hunting ranges), it can't match the .25-06. At that range, velocity trumps ballistic coefficient. Thumbs up, Dave!

Yes, the 6.5 Creedmoor would not be my choice for Elk either. But a 375 H&H would not be my choice for smaller game either. At least you had actual use/ownership experience to determine your own preference. The 6.5's made me sell one of my .270 win's..

Lord willing, planning on building a LR308 budget gun. Back and forth between 308 and 6.5 Creedmoor. Not a reloader. Would be a Tennessee whitetail woods gun. Leaning toward a 16 inch 308, but like the Creedmoor. Wonder what the shortest AR barrel a 6.5 Creedmoor would still be good at, say 500 yards or less. Thanks for the video. The 6.5 C is definitely legit.

Nothing wrong with the round. It's just been pushed as a long range hunting caliber. Which it is not. It's a long range paper puncher and does a great job at that.
@davestrohmeyer-saddleupsho8009
Yes...But what constitutes long range hunting is in itself debatable...My maximum range that I try to stay within, is calculated for each cartridge/rifle combination, their terminal bullet performance and my limited ability to confidently take a kill shot. My personal comfort zone is 400 yds and preferably allot closer, especially on CXP2 game and smaller.

IMO the 6.5 Creed was overhyped in the beginning and now their is a backlash to all the hype. It’s a great round for whitetail, hogs, and antelope inside 500 yards. It is not a great Elk round. It is not a great round for shooting animals at 800+ yards. It’s basically a 260 Rem designed for heavier 140 grain bullets, it is what it is. I personally really like it as a antelope/ deer gun at reasonable distances.

To much overhype for to long. It got its fame for punching paper at the creedmoore shooting range which it was specifically built for and then people wanted to hunt with it, and they did. They took animals larger than what was ethical with it, and then bragged about it. It is a wonderful deer rifle up to mule deer, after that I wouldnt personally hunt with it. I have seen enough videos of hunters say it wasnt enough for elk and moose after they shot it to not use it again for those large animals.
