6.5 Swede Penetration Test and Steel Targets on the Range

Yet again, we are out here testing the capability of another historic military surplus rifle and caliber, the 6.5x55mm Swede from a Swedish Mauser Carbine Model 1894. The M1894 is the perfect weight and size for short to medium distances when hunting deer. The 6.5x55mm SP should have the penetration power, expansion, and flat enough trajectory for North American Whitetail deer. The recoil felt shooting the 6.5 Swede is less than some other military calibers of that era for example say the .303 British. Our tests also measure some accuracy by hitting steel targets at various ranges, from 50 to 90 meters.

Best Mauser, best cartridge. Started on ruff M38, still accurate. Found AG42B, still accurate...much better condition. But past 300 yds, started to wish for better sights. So, got a M41B with an AJAX 4x scope. Would like the shorty carbine. Good video.

My Husqvarna 1943 M38 Swedish carbine in mint condition (looks unused) cost me $90 with 200 rounds of 6.5 X55. That was almost 30 years ago. I added a scope mount that attaches to the location on the rear iron sight because I didn't want any permanent modifications or holes in my mint condition vintage rifle. I added a variable magnification, long eye relief scope. Wow, what a "tack driver". I have no problem hitting steel targets out 600 yards. It actually irritates my shooting buddies that my under $200, 80 year old Swedish Mauser out shoots their $2000 top of the line rifles. And, as seen by all of the 6.5 modern cartridge variants, it turns out the ballistic characteristics are really optimal for almost any serious application.

Dude my 1894 (built in 95) is an absolute tack driver at similar distances. Its insanely slept on, and really needs some respeck on its name. Its a moose maiming machine, ive been trying to get it sighted in with a new scope so i can take it out this season for deer, but me thinks its not in the cards this year lol

Friend of mine and I bought a couple spam cans of wooden bullet blanks from J&G a couple years ago. It was like 4200 rounds for $100 with $75 shipping at the time. We split it and use the brass as primed brass and put new powder in it and proper bullets. It came to like 1 cent or something per primed brass. He keeps it all at his house bc he has dies and they are already set up. I just bring him bullets and powder and pay for his time with some beer.

I've got a CG63, it's a target rifle made from a 44 Husquvarna. I just got 2 packages of Swed silver 140 grain FMJ mil issue. I want to match that round and ballistics. this is one of the guns I want to do the 1km milkjug challenge with. The round was designed to shoot at 2600 fps, pretty fast for the 1890's

Wish I had grabbed a Swede 96 when i had the chance. I walked into my local shop one day and they had two rifles i wanted, the Swedish Mauser and a VZ24. I grabbed the VZ24 because i was under the impression it was harder to come by.

I do own 3-rifles in that caliber : an M38 (Carl Gustav), custom walnut-stock, timney-trigger , fast lock-time cock-on-opening-bolt , period pecar-scope, tack-driver out to 450yds , a 1942 Husqvarna-civilian M96 fully-wooded and a Sako AV (my 'Flashest' rifle) . The old M38 is my favorite and 120gr Sierra Pro-hunters flatten-deer way beyond what they should , better than the 140's Dave nz

Just curious about what brand the commercial ammo you guys were using was. I've used Federal commercial ammo and in my home loads I'm using Nosler target projectiles. I use these both on wild boar. Was thinking of target shooting years ago and so I've got a heap of the target stuff to use up. I've noticed that the target stuff often passes right on through through if I hit somewhere soft. I've used Federal and it drops them quite a deal faster so the expansion certainly has benefits. So yes would love to know what brand and weight etc you guys were using.

Advice on point of aim vs. point of impact on the steel please. I bought 2 swedish mausers that I have not taken to the range yet and I would like to get an idea of how yours was hitting at what distance based on what sight setting. Thank you.
@BattlefieldCurator

We were shooting those plates at 50yd, 75yd and 90yd. No sight adjustment needed, we aimed down the sights and point of impact was where the sight picture lined up.

thats an 17.5 inch barrel, with a ton of free bore. 2300fps is about all you can squeeze out of it.

Note: 6.5 Bullets do not provide a great blood Trail, with Standard velocity, factory ammo, or the SE 6x5x55 Hotter Factory load, HOWEVER... 6.5x55 Fans, use 6.5x55 , 139 grn SP And that all changes. The big lead tip really expands the bullet.
@BattlefieldCurator

All I use for hunting is SP. I’ve heard and read about some hunters who had unfortunate hunting experiences using FMJ
@eugenegress5896
@eugenegress5896 9 месяцев назад
@BattlefieldCurator OH, NO....Cannot believe someone would hunt with FMJ. Yeah thats not Good; illegal in most areas. I tested 6.5 swede SP Remington Core Lokt , and it still did not expand to the width of PPU Brand 139 grn SP. Sellor and Bellot 140 grn SP, did not have as wide Expansion Either. Its a Great Round, if a Person uses the proper bullet, as well as Hand Loading said Round. Have a great day! Thanks for your Reply.

And for newer rifles you load a 140gr boolit to about 2850fps its a rely god upp to 1200m outclass a 308 at abut 250m and about half the wind correction and more over 800m
