Randy talks about the origins of the 6.5x.300 Wby. This includes those early on, including Mary Louise DiVito, Howard Wolfe, the 6.5x300 WWH or Weatherby Wright Hoyer cartridge and others. Are they finicky, as some have reported? Are there limitations.
A bit of history on the 6.5 x 300 Wby.

I have zero complaints about my 6.5-300. Laser beam.

Dragsters are a lot of fun, rebuilding the engine is just part of the game. Your velocity argument is spot on. My lowly, little 6.5 Grendels are easy to develop loads across a variety of bullets and powders. This is across several guns, both gas and bolt. That said, slinging bullets fast is still fun. Thank you for your videos.

Thank you Randy. You are a great source of info for rifle, cartridge, and how bullets behave for both. I have a friend that I loaded for in 6.5-300 and you are absolutely right. It's a very finicky little demon. We finally settled on Retumbo and monolithic bullets and I loaded 340 rounds for him. I'll tell you, he was wise to order four barrels. This round is very destructive to barrels.

Randy, I always enjoy your videos and after nearly 50 years of reloading I’m still learning something new from your videos. I just saw your 6.5-300 video this morning and I’ve been away away from the computer for a few months due to health issues and trying to prepare for a Dall Sheep hunt in September. This all relates to the 6.5-300 because this is what I have chosen for my sheep hunt after my 280 Ackleys just seemed to loose their edge, at least in my hands. I have two 6.5-300’s, one with a steel action and one in Titanium which I bought secondly to save on weight and in fear that I would have the steel action rifle shot out before my trip. My load in the steel action is Peterson Brass, 215M Primer, 83.5gr N570 powder with a 140gr Accubond. Accuracy is in the 1/2 to 3/4 inch range with velocity right at 3500. As you stated in our video I am now at around 300 rounds through this rifle and the throat of this rifle looks like the hide of an alligator for about 3 inches of the throat. For now it is still has accuracy but I know its days are numbered so its sighted in for 1 inch high at 100 and 200 and hits about 3 low at 300 and I will only shoot it for hunting to save whatever accuracy it has left. The Titanium actioned rifle never had quite the same accuracy as the steel version but will shoot consistently just around an inch and since it is 3/4 a pound lighter (6lbs 12 oz) than the steel version with only about 100 rounds through it I plan on using it for my sheep trip if I’m physically able to make the trip. The load for this rifle is similar except I seem to develop pressure earlier in this rifle and I’m using 83.0 of N570 with everything else the same. What has me a bit bothered is how these groups tend to open up at 300 yards measuring 4 or maybe 5 inches. I’m sure thats still more than adequate for sheep and goats at 300 yards because that is my self imposed limit; I won’t shoot farther than 300 yards at a game animal. By the way, I also tried many other powders including 869, LRT, N568 and H1000. N568 and H1000 were in the same ball park accuracy wise as N570 but velocity was around 3250 instead of 3500. So far the throat if the Titanium actioned rifle looks OK, maybe a little bit of haze so I’m trying to baby it. I also just watched your primer video before the 6.5-300 video and maybe a primer change would tighten up the groups a bit. I do have some Rem 9 and 1/2 M’s but no Winch LRP. Do you have any thought on N570 or anything I stated here about my load. By the way both rifles have Weatherby’s light contour which I think is a #2 so maybe I’m expecting too much.

Good info, Sir. I was thinking of getting a 6.5-300 Wty for a couple months now. I had kinda the same thoughts as yours. That its just to fast if using soft-point projectile. My second choice in the .264 family is the 6.5 PRC. It runs a slower than the 6.5-300 Wty but a lil quicker than the 6.5CM. What are your thoughts on the 6.5 PRC on Whitetails/Hogs? And what bullet selection would you use on deer/hogs at ranges of 100yds inward, basically woods hunting? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I enjoy your videos a lot. I am trying to decide on a 6.5 I’m torn between the 6.5 RPM. And the 6.5 PRC. I here the PRC is hard to reload for due to the very tight tolerances. So resizing the case is difficult. I like the performance of the RPM. But weatherby doesn’t build a sub MOA rifle. They build a MOA rifle. Have you had much experience with the 6.5 PRC Thank you for your time. Cheers

👍- 100% spot on for "high speed" cartridges. While I loved the 220 Swift when I had one, I discovered that my friend's 22-250 was accurate for many more rounds. Just a "little bit slower" resulted in longer accuracy life for the rifle. And I've heard about "disintegrating bullets" before. Faster twist speed REQUIRES tougher bullets.

In 1963 Randy was probably complaining that the 300 Winchester Magnum had to short of a neck, and would never kill Elk like weatherby cartridge, oh....and that new Winchester model 70 won't catch on either. Jesus, this guy can't help himself.

Yah I hear nothing but complaints from Weatherby 6.5x300 owners on bullets disintegrating..../sarcasm off. C'mon, another Randy pisses on new rifle videos.

I know the subject was the 6.5x 300, but I have a question off topic. I figured since you’ve been in the game for a while you’d be the guy to ask. It’s about the Drummond line of rounds based on Weatherby brass. Bodies were blown out as much as possible. Necks were short and the shoulder was an almost flat 60 degrees. I was looking for information on them or anybody shooting one. I’d just like a couple cases for my collection. I know the originated in Pennsylvania. Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.
