Great video thank you! I will not be trading in mine any time soon! Here in Australia, a big factor in choosing a .270 is that it is the minimum calibre(with130gr) permitted to hunt Sambar deer in the state of Victoria.

Watched this again. Ive got the 270win and would go with it. I heard your comment that ammo for 270win is more available. Yeah, thats one important consideration but its also economy. The less expensive factory ammo make for easy way to aquire brass to reload. Economy and availability were really the reason i have a 270win. Pre panDemocal i was purchasing ammo for $15-$16 box and $23 for the high end Federal Trophy factory stuff i got on a closeout. Chuck, the 270win was just a cheap ride for me so i invested in it, otherwise i dont believe its any better.

Hey hey hey!!!! I've been killing with 270 my whole life. Great woods range caliber and always performs on deer and bear. BUT.... BUT BUT BUT..... When pushing out or hunting where ranges exceed 400 yards I always go to 6.5 prc. Didn't use to be that way though. My choice would've always been 300 win mag. Since I purchased my first 6.5×55 swede in 2004 I've been a fan of the 6.5's complete versatility. From plinking to taking game it has been my go to since then. Recoil is better, and performance on par. The 6.5 creed was the revolution for a bit and the new age Mauser. It benefitted from cartridge designs. Enter the 6.5 prc. Man I absolutely love loading for this cartridge. It's a love affair. My wife, who loves her 270, since shooting my savage 110 highcountry has been wanting it. Ordered her a 110 timberline last November in left hand configuration. That o.d. green is sexy and the rifle is topped with an Arken 6-24×50mm gen 2 ... talk about a long range machine. I hope she gets to unleash it on a deer or bear this season down east where the shots can be out to the moon. Now ethically we don't kill beyond 800 but it can be done on grazing animals that are relaxed. That taken into consideration. I can't knock the 270 for what it brings. Not getting rid of any for dang sure. They do collect a lot of dust seems like these days. That 150 long range... how does it stabilize in your rifle? Assuming it has a 1-8 twist. I've read good things about it and I've never had a standard accubond come apart. Matter of fact everything shot with an accubond dies in its tracks. Thanks for the video

Even too much 30-06 will cause my whole arm to go numb unfortunately, so “not too bad” is a lot lower bar for me than most lol. 7prc seems to be in the sweet spot where I get more horsepower than I have, but don’t need to make it intentionally super heavy, as a good muzzle break should be enough for 7prc. but for the none handloader you are going to get better accuracy with the 6.5 prc. being able to buy corelokts at the lodge doesn't mean they are accurate enough to take a shot on an animal at 400 yards. i had a weatherby sub moa in .270win that struggled with factory ammo, shot 3 inch groups with the federal blue box, winchester pp, and corelokts. shot handloads like a dream, and federal fusion would just sneak sub moa, but fusions dont have the BC or the powder capacity to reliably perform at 400. so, being able to buy ammo at the gas station didnt matter, with a sub moa rifle.

Interestingly, the 270WIN does a little better than the 6.5PRC with Barnes LRX bullets in both… but only by about the same amount that the 6.5 beats 270 in the ABLR’s. These two cartridges are in a dead heat… It is thus not unreasonable to let cost and availability tip the scales. One of those new Browning X-bolts in 270WIN with 1:8 fast twist and 165gr ABLR would trounce the PRC pretty solidly… Cheers!

6.5/.264 vs 6.8/.277 as calibers really do not have that much diameter difference. Get either moving at the speeds you got in this quick and dirty comparison and you have a decently powerful hunting load for anything that either caliber and weight would generally be appropriate. Tiny differences are not going to change anything in hunting. Even target shooting is more about the shooter and how well he or she meshes with the equipment than it is the equipment.

Just ordered a 270 win x bolt and even though i hand load factory ammo definitely helps. The .270win is under rated as a hunting cartridge, because its old? a lot of these newer short, fat, cartirdges were developed for long range shooting, hunting with fast twist barrels and high BC bullets, do the same to a .270 win and it hangs right in there.By the way, i have the original creed more, a 6.5X55 swede, in a rem 700 and yeah, that cartridge is old, developed in 1894 but it has more case capacity than the creed more or 260 rem, go figure.

Its pretty wild how close a 100 year old cartridge design basically matches a "improved version" the 2 cartridges are most definitely interchangeable there really is no difference at all inside 500 yards. I understand for comparison sake cartridges are measured out to 1000 yards for performance but lets be real 98 percent of hunting is done inside 300 yards. So bullet construction should be more important to guys rather than looking at energy values @750 yards. Id say for the average joe who just wants to hunt get the .270 a box of any PRC ammo is pricey you can still buy .270 power points or corelocks for like 25 bucks. Granted they arnt premium options but id wager it would work great anyway. Prc is a sexy looking cartridge though i have to admit. Pick either one they do the same job in the woods

eh, ammo being sold at the gas station is a non issue, your rifle has to shoot it well enough to get to the target, and it has to be the right bullet to perform at that distance on the game being hunted. so, you might be fine hunting deer in the woods, and still be shit out of luck hunting in the mountains. im not sold on "wide variety of grains to choose from" either. its a marketing gimmick to sell ammo to the most gullible hunters, the ones using the .30-06 and .308. in a .270 you can do it all with 130, 150, and 160. you can do this with any non .30 cal chambering. because... the hunters that buy them put more thought into the purchase in the first place and are less likely to think changing grain weight is going to do something magically different on an animal. inb4, .30 cal 220grn RN kills bears good? thats why your pro hunter is carrying a .416 rigby, because the 220 grain kills bears good.

Then there is a clear advantage to the 6.5 PRC. And that is where the ABLR is somewhat useful as well, but I really don't like the bullet for general hunting where you might get a short range shot on an animal. It is way to soft and the weight retention is terrible at high speed. I totally prefer the Barnes LRX for long range hunting, unless you want to shoot at an animal at a very far distance. Then the ABLR might be a better choice. I very much more prefer to shoot a deer at 50 yards with the LRX than I want to shoot it with the ABLR. And if it is a moose, then I EXTREMELY much more prefer to shoot it at 50 yards with the LRX than the ABLR.

My rifle is a savage 110 with a 1-9.25 twist 24” barrel and I’ve heard conflicting reports if it will stabilize the 165 accubond. I think that is the highest bc you can get in .277 if I’m not mistaken. Some people say theirs shoots it fine others say it’s keyholing at 100 yards but I doubt my gun would shoot it those well. 35 years experience handloading, hunting with and shooing 270 Win in at least 7 states on game, and a few Canadian provinces. 3 months experience with 6.5PRC. They're like kids, love them both, they're just different. Despite better brass on hand from Lapua for the 6.5, I've found it much easier to get a tack driving load in 9 different 270s with WW and Starline brass v my ONE PRS 6.5PRC with an MTU Lilja barrel and Defiance South Fork action, MDT chassis system. However, that PRC shoots factory Nosler 140 btips 1/4 minute - go figure. Like many, I like to try new stuff, load for it, see what I can get out of it. I don't like one more than the other and as of today, I'd take any one of my 270s with their handloaded 150 Berger VLDs with H4831SC, or the 150 Nos Btips over IMR4831 over my 6.5PRC with the factory 140 Nos Btip because I shot them all at 600 yards at my dad's property in north Alabama and the 270s all did better with 3-4 inch 5 shot groups whereas the PRC's best was 5 inches but mostly 6 inch groups. FOUR OF THOSE 270s are FACTORY Tikkas! Not a big deal but since we all seem to be diving into "what's better...." then might as well agree a 3.5" avg group is better than a 6" group at the same distance. PLUS, my 150s are clocking at 3000-3050 fps in a 24" barrel and the PRC's 26" barrel is clocking those btips at 2920. In my case, the 270s win this hands down

Now if you give the 270 Winchester a 1:8" barrel twist rate then it becomes a real bruiser with 165 grain to 180 grain .277 bullets. Thank you. I did a full review of the rifle, and their socks are awful but they seam to be a good Barreled Action.

From what I understand, they would be virtually identical (ballistically speaking) out to about 450yds and then the 6.5 will outpace the 270 from there on our. This was a good test and you did a good job with pertinent info. I have several calibers from 222 to 45-70 but never had a 270.. I am seriously considering a 6.5 PRC or a 270 and even though I appreciate the history behind the 270, I think I'm going with the 6.5 PRC IN maybe a Springfield Waypoint.

@@AlaskanBallisticsmy waypoint all carbon 6.5 prc is amazing! Words can’t explain, can’t wait for this years hunt! Went to a expo, not that long ago. At the Springfield booth, they we’re telling me at the end of this year there going to have long actions cartridges, including the 7prc! Highly recommended the waypoint! And at the price point, cant beat it!

If you have a .270, if it shoots well for you and if you like it there's no reason to swap it for 6.5 PRC UNLESS you want to get into long-range target shooting (due to lack of good match bullets in the .277 caliber) or you simply want one. If you don't currently own a rifle in that class you might consider the PRC, especially if you plan to reload or do long range target stuff. I own a 6.5 PRC and have shot many .270s over the years. While the PRC generates slightly less foot-pounds of recoil with comparable bullets, the PRC recoil is more of a longer push vs. the sharp, quick crack of the .270. I find the PRC more comfortable to shoot FOR ME. The .270, however, is not uncomfortable. With a muzzle brake and a decent recoil pad and most folks can handle the recoil of both just fine. Both are great rounds and fully capable of hunting anything up to and including elk. The key as always is using the right bullet and putting it in the right place. Do that and I doubt that any animal could tell the difference between the two.

Well said. And either will take a moose! I took a moose with my 6.5x284 Norma this year.

Both will last a life time if you only shoot it a few times a year for deer season.

The presentation is good for close range. 300 yards would show people more. And 500 to 1,000 yards would show the target competition differences. A relative of mine owns the 6.5 PRC Weatherby Vanguard, and it shoots very nice. I own a 6.5 Creedmore Ruger American, a .270 Win Tikka T3x, and a .308 Desert Tech MDRX. In my situation, the differences are greater in the rifles than the ammo. At ranges less than 150 yards. 350 Legend, 360 Buckhammer, 400 Legend, 450 Bushmaster, or 45-70 Government. Would meet most peoples needs very well. A lot of effort goes into any of these presentations. And I do find the presentations entertaining and informative. I have bought a collection of rifles to teach my grandkids shooting. But since most shooting ranges are 100 yards. The grandkids are not seeing differences in calibers, as much as differences in styles of rifles.

Most new buyers will get some 6.5. Have a very old 30-06 that will rebarrel to 35 Whelen and will get/Build a 7mm Rem Mag or a 280 AI
