This video is part 6 of 6, and goes through step by step how to apply patina and polish a finished Art Deco inspired rainbow suncatcher. I go over the tools and methods/processes I use to patina and finish stained glass. I enjoy making these videos for fun and to hopefully help someone learn more about my favorite artform. Hope you enjoy!
Check out my Instagram for a chance to win this finished suncatcher at the end of this series.

You don’t ramble at all. You answer the questions I would be asking you if I were in the studio with you. You anticipate the questions very well. People who don’t know anything about stained glass don’t know what questions to ask. I think your seams are so good because you pin the pieces together tightly before you solder them. Everyone doesn’t do that. It isn’t enough just to have the pieces fit together perfectly.

Thank you, sometimes I don't know what to say in these videos, so it's nice to hear that they're helpful. Yes, I think pinning the pieces is very important, if you don't, then when you go to tack the pieces in place, they can easily shift on you.

@Samantha Ashley also sorry for all the questions but I have another one. I noticed you said you now use pledge is that still the case and if so do you prefer that over any of the waxes and do you just spray and wipe?
@SamanthaAshleyGlass
@SamanthaAshleyGlass Год назад
@@therealdollfacee I'll be totally honest, I rotate between different waxing methods all the time (sometimes it's clarity, sometimes it's mother's cleaner wax, sometimes it's pledge) - I don't have a "one method is supreme" routine 😅. I mostly use pledge for additional cleanings/polishings though, like if I have a piece that's been sitting in my house for a while, I'll repolish it with pledge. If you want to use pledge for the initial waxing, spray the whole piece generously and let it soak in for a few hours or overnight before you wipe it off.

@Samantha Ashley that's interesting but makes sense! Thank you!

If you wanted could you leave it shiny silver? Your solder seams are flawless!
@SamanthaAshleyGlass
@SamanthaAshleyGlass Год назад
Absolutely! I leave pieces silver, I patinate them black, or I patinate them copper, just depends on the situation. When I leave pieces silver, I like to polish them with simichrome or mother's metal polish to get them shiny like chrome!

Samantha- I have seen your videos and am quite impressed by them. I have not seen anyone clean the solder lines as well as you. One question, could you tell me where to find the "magic cleaning sheets". I think they would help me quite a bit. Thank you for your videos. Rick Reese

Hi! Thank you so much. The cleaning sheets are melamine sponge (or Mr. Clean magic erasers). I got a big box of generic melamine sponges from Amazon

I love your tutorials. Thank you for your instructions. I used LIVA on a piece and when I cleaned it off a lot of patina came off. Dis I do something wrong?
@SamanthaAshleyGlass
@SamanthaAshleyGlass 4 месяца назад
Thanks! So, using Liva and Clarity shouldn't take any of the patina off. (I have experienced what you're talking about before). Something might have happened during your cleaning process to affect how the patina adhered to the solder. You can simply do a quick/light steel wool rub and reapply the patina. Then relax after a couple hours. Make sure the wax is good and dry before buffing it off. That should fix it.

Your work is just outstanding!! I know your grandfather loved passing on his knowledge to you. I can’t find that Liva Polish anyplace. It’s out of stock everywhere . Any suggestion on another product to use? Thanks.

Aw, thank you so much for the kind words. You can also use Clarity stained glass finishing compound. Just like Liva, Clarity is a polish and wax combo. I love using either of those for the initial waxing/polish, since it really brings out the shine. However, if you can't find either of those, you can also use a pure carnauba car wax, like Mother's California Gold (I like to use that for any subsequent waxing that I do months after the initial waxing, just to freshen up and protect my pieces). Hope that helps! 🙂

How should you use the mother’s paste wax?
@SamanthaAshleyGlass
@SamanthaAshleyGlass 7 месяцев назад
I just use a microfiber cloth, get some on the cloth, and gently rub it all over the solder seams and glass. Let dry for a few hours, then buff off with a microfiber cloth

HELP...Why does my foil pull away from the glass after soldering?
@SamanthaAshleyGlass
@SamanthaAshleyGlass 2 года назад
There could be a variety of reasons. Maybe the glass isn't clean enough before you foil (I wipe all my glass down with alcohol before foiling), you might not be burnishing the foil well enough, or when you're soldering, if you go over the same spot too many times, you can melt the foil adhesive. Hope this helps.
@stellagirl7625
@stellagirl7625 2 года назад
@@SamanthaAshleyGlass wow, yes it does help! I believe its in the soldering too long! I thought i burnished too much because I'd wear some of the copper off the foil. I also use alcohol and I just started using finger cots. Thank you so much!!! I trust you and your site very much. To have learned from your grandfather and then the passion that is so evident from you, it's a no- brainer 🤭 Thank you very much Art deco is also my favorite! 🌈
