1) Don't leave any white space 2) Set a time limit/specific time when you want to finish it 3) Draw scribbles/blobs and turn them into faces/things 4) Find an interesting format for a sketchbook (different type of sketchbook than you usually use) 5) Full color illustrations 6) Dedicate your sketchbook for one thing (one for gestures, one for color, etc) 🙂
I'm one of those that have several sketchbooks for specific things. I'm currently filling a sketchbook for just thought process, one for still life in gouache, one for landscapes in gouache, one for figure/gestures drawings, and one for pushing color. Damn... I didn't realize how many I'm using at the same time! It does make it longer to complete since you're working in several, but it helps me stay organized and always knowing what to create when I open it.
@cinnamon sparkles yeah! It can also be because some sketchbooks have different paper types that some can handle paints and others not so much and then spirals into a thing of having specific sketchbooks!
The standing cats you made really remind me of "The Cat Returns". It was that one Studio Ghibli movie with cute cats 🐈 Also thanks for this awesome vid!
I actually started with sketchbooks filled with full drawings. I was new to all this stuff so I just... drew. Now i've begun to actually study anatomy and fill sketchbooks with sketches. I was always really afraid to mess something up but now I just scribble and I'm happy to improve.
When I draw a person in a style I actually really like, I can’t redraw it cause idk it never turns out the same. Do you have advice or something? Love your vids tho Hello everyone, I think I found my drawing style its still developing but im sooo happy its something! thx for all the comments and likes!!!!!!!!!!!!
This is late I know but when I made my stylized characters for the first time they were super inconsistent, I had to develop a certain step by step for each particular character. And then I would make a whole page of that characters face or whole body just to memorize the shapes so I could do it easily. That just took time and I think I probably could put all the drawings of that character together and it might be 150 page book I don't know for sure though.
I know this is very late, but I suggest taking the drawing and breaking it down like it would be seen in a how to draw book. Break it down in shapes and figure out what it is that you like, proportions, stuff like that!
The thing I love about your videos is that you never insist there's a 'right' way to do things. As a learning, very unconfident artist it helps me not hate my drawings every time I look at them.
The cats you painted here are adorable!! 🥺🥺🥺 With my current sketchbook, I've challenged myself not to show anything in it to anyone except family or a select other few until I've finished it, essentially not taking any pictures or sharing it excessively. I'm doing it both to be motivated to finish it sooner and to not overshare my art, keep some of it more personal and giving me time to reflect on if I should share it.
This ispired me a lot now, thank you. I spent the last few weeks and will spend the next few weeks hardly drawing anythig becuse of my upcoming important exams, but then I will jump into it, and will probably set a similar goal for myself. :D
Looking back at your old sketchbook you have improved a lot since 2017. I am very inspired that changes and improvement can be made even if you don’t realize it. I am challenge myself a lot.
Sketchbook videos are my favorites to watch and also to make myself. There's something so magical about a sketchbook if you ask me. Everyone fills it in their own way and it's the home of so many creative ideas. My sketchbook is like my happy place, somewhere I can go and be myself whether I'm feeling happy or not. I also write and collage in it sometimes. The cool thing is that there are absolutely no rules :)
JelArts THANK YOU!! Next time I have the chance, I go and buy some Gouache so I can test it out! By the way, a couple weeks ago I got that same sketch book and you were right, THE PAPER IS AMAZING!!!
I find that your videos are so nice to watch and especially listen to. The art is aesthetic, the speed good to watch and your voice is pleasant. You sound kind and motivated and personal. Good work, hon.
I really like your art style. I'm struggling on how to find my own art style and what kind of art I'm into. But recently I've been watching artist on RU-vid and it's getting my motivation up and I'm getting inspired again 😊 thank you.
Ever since I've watched your videos, I've started to get out of my comfort zone and started drawing other things. I overcame so many artist problems since then :'D *and is that a Muji notebook? .-.
Thanks for the ideas! I love your sketchbook vids, it's inspiring. I'm currently doing the full color illustrations per page with a dark theme on my current sketchbook.
I dedicate my sketchbooks for specific purposes. They fill up slower, but it helps to have everything related in one place. There's always the option to have a separate sketchbook for general sketching.
I recently started drawing in a square sketchbook and I love it. I never feel contrained by the format because I can change it into a portrait or landscape according to my will and framing! I would advise a medium square one because, even though the easier to find are like 5x5, they are pretty small so I would advise you a 8x8 or above, it's really great! (I just started my new one and I LOVE the ratio)
Subscribed! Just began learning to paint digitally, art is something that's always been with me and I'm excited to get back into it! Thanks for your content :) :)
I had a lot of half empty sketchbooks, so I've catagorized all of them, but I also have 2 sketchbooks which can be used for whatever I want. This way I can still sketch what I want, but if I know what I want to sketch, I can use the right sketchbook
for my new sketchbook that is coming today along with some fineliners I want to focus on less color and more dynamic poses, perspective, line quality (I've really been struggling with shaky hands when I line my art) and not needing color to show emotion. I used to heavily rely on my markers too much and now I'm straying away but I've also stopped doing line art which hasn't been great.
Nice video, good tips! I have a sketchbook (okay 2, a A5 and an A4 sized sketchbook) where the only white spaces are filled in with white pencil. A square sketchbook which I don't allow myself to sketch in it yet, because I have to fill my other "daily" sketchbook first. One sketchbook only for drawings I colour in with markers (I only have 12 markers). I think I need to practice some more then I do, but sometimes that is really hard.
I love your sketchbooks, very helpful for me, and you're so very inspirational. Your art is very amazing I love them... (btw, i got laugh in your blindfold challenge)
i love everything about this channel! and u ur voice is so easy to understand and i feel calmed and able to concentrate and ur inspiring and gives great motivation i love ur art style, sketchbooks, everything's so beautiful! i just got so much to study so i can't always be early
This was such a great video! I felt really inspired to start working on life drawings and fill my sketchbook in different ways and just to improve and your videos helped me so much!
Really great and motivating video, thanks ! I love your sketchbook videos, it always help me stay motivated to draw, and give me new ideas each time, so once again, thanks !
I really like the challenge to leave minimum white space and my sketchbook is already looking so awesome, and I am so happy ,I found this video now thank you so much pls keep up the good work sending lots of luv from India
remember to take breaks though! dont force yourself to do amazing illustrations in every page. theres a difference between challenging yourself and tiring yourself out. we dont want to burn out your passion for art! ✨
I just started a new sketch book & my only rule is to use only black/ink pens. Also use both side of the sketch book & it’s a 70 pages so 140 drawings. I’m pumped already on page 6. Great video & I like the orange & black cat the best 👍
I feel like the 'having one sketch book for a specific thing' idea would be really cool because you could flip through and see your improvement all in one place
I love your art so much! I love your style, and I’m very inspired by you. Whenever I see your vids, I always want to draw. You’re so helpful! Keep going, and keep making these awesome vids!
You should check out Pink Pig International for your next sketchbook. 😁 They have some really cool formats, including squares and long thin ones. They do watercolour paper books and other paper. Their toned paper sketchbooks are made from recycled coffee cups. 😊
Very cute drawings. Thanks for sharing! I have a new sketchbook, is small and cute. Strangely, for me, is very hard to start a sketchbook. I find it so pretty that I don't want to finish it or waste/damage it? It's absolutely silly and illogical, because that's what a sketchbook is for! To practice! But that happens to me every time I get a new one.
Always a motivating listen! Thanks for showing us your work here! gouache looks so forgiving, I def have to try it someday as I mostly use watercolor. For a long time I was hesitant about skillshare, now I have no excuse to not try it! Thank you so so much. I will make good use out of it
Thanks for the motivation and thanks for the ideas I've listened to a lot of people and I've come up with ideas but I feel like you're is there a simpler enough for me to understand you did I can switch it up and just use color or I can go in sections and try different stuff it was absolutely helpful and you have a point with totally feeling the page because I feel like I'm wasting so much space when I do not feel the page so what I do is try to incorporate and stuff that has to do with that particular thing because after on the way sketchbooks that I've only put one or two things in then I get aggravated and I'm like well I'm wasting paper and I hate that not throwing away more like giving away. But anyway thanks so much.
Just figured out your channel. Your illustrations are AMAZING!!the cats turned out pretty cute. Keep inspiring . May your channel reach a million subs 💓love...
Began watching this wideo and drawing at the same time ...usually it takes me forever with people drawings but you vid made me draw a girl sitting down knees up stroking a cat ...thanks also good painting and colour use~
I actually have two sketchbooks. A pocket one for scribbling with my pens while I’m bored in the train or somewhere else. And an “actual” sketchbook where I practice with my style and practice character design, anatomy etc.
Maybe you can make another video on the coptic stitch to make your square book! and share some tips for loose stitching, which i struggled with and had big gaps between the signatures :(
I'm starting one soon for my art channel (this is my personal) I'm faceblind and decided I want to learn to draw faces so I'm going to be drawing a face every day for a year and taking one sketch a week to develop as maybe not a completely finished piece but a bigger piece outside of the sketchbook
my art channel is ArtByTekoro if anyone's interested, I posted a few faces I've drawn to instagram if anyone wants to tell me how I'm doing with the faces I've tried so far
I love the idea of having a different sketchbook for different things! I need to make one JUST for drawings without reference, cause the second I’m without a picture, I’m entirely lost and can’t draw a single line...
