6. Class 60 - The Power to Move Mountains

We all remember the Steadfast class of locomotive don't we? Come on, you know, that all-encompassing brand name given to the class 60s, used by BR and enthusiasts alike, and still used to this day? Well, this video gives that impression.
In reality it is training material for the drivers conversion course onto the new locos, but it is interspersed with an unspecified Rory McGrath alike giving some corporate spiel about the new 'Steadfasts'. Interestingly, the class are described as having an ability to move mountains of 'coal, steel and general freight', so pretty much all the industries that Thatcher had put into decline, going someway to explain why only a handful of the hundred built are ever required for traffic.
The video starts with a Western style stand off (the sort between a cowboy and an Indian, not between hydraulic and electric transmission) between a driver and his new steed. The loco is then introduced with powerful footage of tug 2 on a rake of TEA wagons, although the effect is somewhat ruined by the spoon glimpsed at the rear of the consist. There is then some description of the road haulage competitors, nicely illustrated with some copywrite free 1970s footage of the M1.
We then move on to the meat of the video, as the production team try and convince us that the 200ft of demonstration line at Brush works is really open main line. Various failure modes are recreated, all to the backdrop of the same bit of Leicestershire scrubland. They are obviously very proud of the diagnostics panel, as it seems to feature at every opportunity.
The video concludes with a rousing toast to Steadfast; "the workhorse of the future", obviously unaware of the thoroughbred that GM were developing.

Having trained both loco's a class 60 and 66, without question the class 60 was the best for pulling loaded coal trains from Liverpool docks averaging around 2,400 tons and for being a driver friendly loco.

'Diagnostic panel' tally - 6 'Locomotive is a failure' tally - 6 ...and although they say it's a 'workhorse', at 13:07 the jumping audio seems to say it's 'like a pony' when on reduced power. They reduced the power of their big horse to a small one.

I much prefer the 60 over the 66 they look and sound a lot nicer, its a shame EWS/DB ended up favoring the 66 I assmue realiblilty was a big factor as 66s are known for being very reliable. I also remember these being on the Chat Moss route for years doing the Liverpool freights I think.

Would've been interesting to see how the class 60 would have fared had British Railways not been privatised and was possibly looked after better. This machine was literally their answer to the rising threat of the Class 59's (More less an earlier Class 66). I always liked the class 60 myself. No doubt the class 59 and by extension 66 has done much to revolutionize freight movement but it's a real pity the Class 60's got shafted especially when they were relatively new themselves.

Nerd Central Arizona. I love these corporate knob jockey videos. I get the impression this loco had shocking build quality and reliability and it was therefore built around a shouty “computer says no” fault bolox flashy light panel. It’s a fancy looking machine that doesn’t work often. Class 66 is a shed but actually goes?! Yes/no, I’m not a train driver so please enlighten me 😅

Americsn freight locos were ahead. they built a class 59 based off the SD40#2 it could haull 4000 tonnes, it had a 95% reliability rate that beat any BR loco before it by quite a good margin. The class 60 same specs, was based or stolen if you like hehe off of it. They designed and tested SEPEX for faster wheelslip detection which kicked in at 0mph instead of 5mph and added slip ring alternators to get even faster wheelslip detection. For those who dont know rail wheels give the most grip right before they're about to wheel spin. so keeping it close to that bumps up the pulling power. Class 66 EMD came out and was 98% reliable /availability and was cheaper to run and needs less care. so most of the class 60 fleet was due its planned major overhaul at 15 years age and never got it. after a while they gave some their overhaul as their pulling power is unparalleled in the uk. especially if it rains or its freezing

One class 60 is good for 4 500 tons from a stand on a 1 in 100 rising grade, which would need at least 2 if not 3 class 66 to do the same. The 60 s are in a league of their own, true British Engineering !

Fatcher’s Britain....... Don’t make me laugh. So Brush subbed out various bits of the 60. Got the bits back. Fitted it all together in a shoddy manner. Poor quality control. Countless test failures. And then spent any of the remaining profit from the job putting things right for the next 5 years! Well done Brush. Secured the end of British heavy locomotive engineering. Should have gone to Metro Cammell. All the best kit is built in Brum...... we invented the square steering wheel. The class 59 was the most reliable loco ever to run on British tracks. Enough said...... Apart from the desperate need to genuinely PRIVATISE the rail system. It’s the only way forward.

I know alot of people dont like em here, and thats only because all they see is a 66. but there's no getting away from it, you'l be hard pushed to beat the reliability of an EMD power unit. They even exported to 60 countrys around the world since the 40's! Hell, i dont think i could even name 60 countrys LOL.

I'm a big fan of the 60s and what they can do. The Americans have been hauling heavy freight as a super economic power for a long time. They got very good at reliability and cheaper to build and service, cant take that away from them. But in certain situations, they brought back 30+ 60s for a reason, to save banking or they cant get that heavy weight up that incline in bad weather.

they were designed for 95% availability which as with any new loco contract spec, better than what went before. The 66 had 98% and a lot cheaper to buy, service and generally maintain. Still they brought the 60s back in for a very good reason. Haul heavy loads that others would require banking of double heading. Who wins the title for having to stop at a red light, ect with the heaviest cargo in the wettest slipperiest weather and restarting the whole lot if they had to come to a stop where other locos would need to build up a bunch of speed before the incline to just about make it over? Interesting you had to have a dig at Maggie in your notes and fail to mention Labour and Mrs Castle in particular who decimated our rail routes by lifting thousands of miles of track after Mr Beeching stopped inefficient services. At least HE created Freightliner. And of course Maggie's ideas on Privatisation had nothing to do with the doubling of passengers using the railways and the hundreds of new trains (that actually work) and creative and profitable freight services that brought 480 new 66, 67, 68 and 70 freight locos, rebuilt 57s and Super 60s did they? Oh no. Oh and massive Government investment on the back of the revival. British Railways was a joke and managed to decline railway use in its 50 years. Not ONE freight loco it built worked properly for years. Its legacy was shameful. And its been rebuilt in less than 20 years by private businesses. The same private business initiative that created, built and ran the railway for decades before BR .... Having said all that the 60 is still a handsome looking loco ... damn site better than a 68.

You mean except the enviromental factors helping train travel in the 90's and on? You know things like road congestion that gets worse and worse, heading for gridlock, declining car ownership, rising petrol prices, insurance prices and so on. As for private enterprise, how do you explain then, that the majority of line reopenings, line upgrades or newly built lines have happened after the Network was taken back into state ownership? How comes that the private interprise that you so laud has for the most part taken the old rolling stock that BR wanted to replace and used it past the date of replacement by BR? Or that they delayed the installation of the TPWS programm? Or that they are massively financed by the taxpayer via subsidies, unlike the companies of old?

Most of the time the bloody things are on fire lol. They are known as toasters. I can point you to a forum with real American drivers posting on it if you want where you can find out all this stuff. Oh, i also know a driver in the UK that will tell you a 59 will out haul a 60.
@alstonofalltrades3142
@alstonofalltrades3142 2 года назад
This is the problem with just 'one source' the 60 was partly based on the 59 and rightly so. The most tractive effort you can get out of a wheel on steel rail is right before wheelslip. The Americans have been a super power on a large country for a long time meaning way better expertise at building locos to do the job more reliably for less price and cheaper maintenance. They trialed Sep-Ex on a class 58 and slip ring motors to detect if just one axle was begining to wheel slip far faster and reduce power. E.G. over junctions or curves or bumps in the track. At the exact same time that meant the loco weight was going through the other axles in the bogie far more and hence more power could be applied before they slipped. Kinda like me standing on one foot means its harder for someone to swipe that foot away. Of all the type 5 loco's in the UK they 60 is the least powerful engine with the same lower gearing as a 59 but can haul so much on a incline in imperfect weather conditions. This is why they brought them back and why despite the least powerful type 5 hp engine rating they can do the job without banking or double heading
@alstonofalltrades3142
@alstonofalltrades3142 2 года назад
I forgot to add this is why what they tested on a 58 went straight into a class 60 along with what they learnt when the 59's came here and proved what they could do.
