DB Cargo UK has announced that it intends to withdraw all of its remaining operational Class 60s. In this video I will look back at the history of the class.
The Class 60 is a type 5 heavy haul diesel freight locomotive that was contsructed between 1988 and 1993.
Following on from a competitive bidding process on the 17 May 1988 an order for 100 locomotives was placed with Brush Traction by the Secretary of State for Transport at a cost of around £124 million.
Brush decided to subcontract much of the component manufacturing work, while performing final assembly of each locomotive at its erecting shops at Loughborough.
The bodyshell of the Class 60, which was shared with the Class 92 electric locomotives, was fabricated by Procor of Wakefield.
The engines used were a higher-powered development of the Mirrlees engine, which had been previously fitted to the Class 37/9s.
All of the 60s were out shopped in the triple grey Trainload Freight livery of the late British Rail era. The class were variously allocated to the petroleum, coal, metals and construction freight sectors.
In preparation for the privatisation of British Rail the trainload business was split into regionally based shadow franchises.
The locomotives were split between three of these franchises with Mainline assigned 52 of the type, while Loadhaul and Transrail received 31 and 17 Class 60s respectively.
These franchises only existed for a short period before being purchased by the English Welsh & Scottish (EWS) freight company, so transferring all members of the Class to a single private sector operator.
EWS was rebranded as DB Cargo UK in 2007 after it was purchased by the state-owned national railway company of Germany, Deutsche Bahn.
The following compilation looks back at the EWS/DB Class 60s in operation over the past decade.

Totally agree. Hopefully some may find a new home with a different operator.

I like the 60s , but they couldn’t ever be a as reliable as a 66. When EWS started losing traffic , they started turning these off as they owned them and that cost them nothing - they had to use the 66s as a preference becuase they had to carry on paying the leases on the new imports

I think what DB Cargo have done is a complete joke, the class 60 is one of the most powerful diesel locos in Britain and I always remember them pulling the oil train to Robeston which is now run by Class 66s, but I have heard that some might be on short term service
@robd2184

Why is it a joke ? They are running a business and cash is king , so if these are not needed off they go

@@robd2184 how tho? They are one of the most powerful diesel locos in the world and if the class 66 or what wee will pull a train cannot do it due to a failure or something else the class 60 should do it

@@MrMaguiresTrains DB Cargo UK is waiting for the new class 99 (Eurodual 6000 UK) In germany Eurodual 6000 is in use at MEG (Mitteldeutsche Eisenbahn Gesellschaft = subsidiary of DB Cargo Germany ) and DB Cargo as well now. New engine to be dilivered soon, replacing double traction..This is cost cutting at its best ! Maximum traction effort 500 KiloNewton (KN) !!!

All the rot started May 3rd, 1979 ., DB has done nothing to distinguish itself post the stupid, unnecessary and politically driven privatisation 😟 .Now, the public own nothing the hatefull Tories can sell off as its largely owned by foreign investors 😢

The writing was on the wall for the class once EWS got their grubby hands on them. Now with DB up shit creek, especially at home, its time to reduce costs and the ol girls will most probably join the rest of em to rot away. Let's hope that some can get a new life elsewhere. A great locomotive.

Indeed, DB seem to loosing work hand over fist at the moment. I believe DCR want more 60s in their fleet so there may be a future for them.

The class 66 and 67 are leased by ANGEL trains. The class 60 were bought,when EWS aquired some British Rail companies(Sectors) such as load haul , Rail freight distribution. In Germany the class 66 are limited to 100 km/h because of their braking abilities..therefore the class 77(100km/h 450 KiloNewton) was aquired by European Cargo Rail for France /subsidiary of DB Cargo Germany, later renamend as DB Cargo France at first. Then they were sent to Germany to replace diesel hydraulics diesel class 225 / 217 /218 and diesel electric diesel made in Russia for East German Deutsche Reichsbahn 232, 233 ..They proved to be powerful enough to haul trains up to 3.999 metric tonnes ! Even, if starting a train moving inside a grade once again ! No diesel engine does it better !! The class 77 was replaced by class 66 from UK, as well some class 66 of UK were sent to Poland, like FREIGHTLINER did it ! The class 66 to replace Class 60 are regeared to 100 km/h which means more pulling power 410 Kn >>> 450 Kn !

Interesting content, but too much bingy-bongy "musical" punctuation. The locos make all the sound that's needed.

In all fairness, DB Cargo has been wanting to bin the Class 60's for a long time and this locomotive is the only thing that keeps me interested in UK trains because I am now more into American and Canadian trains these days as I am big fan of the GEVO's there. To be honest with you, I think that once the Class 60's are gone, that will be the kill switch of my interests in UK freight. As I do like the sounds of the Class 60 and they rumble a lot similar to the GE Dash 8-40C. I think had EWS sent all 100 Class 60's to be repurposed with all the Dash 9 technology from 1998-2007 at 10 Class 60's to be done each year. They would be able to work other duties and would have had a higher top speed of 74mph as per the Dash 9. Sadly this didn't happen and I would like to see the overhauled ones pass to other freight operators. But 60001 and 60100 will likely pass to the NRM which comforts me. I would like to put one of these Class 60's in the Illinois Railroad Museum as I think it would be appreciate by the public that would visit that attraction and it would be nice to preserve a Class 60 in the United States even if as a display piece.

Tbh DB have removed most of the old traction from service even their 90’s
@BritishRail60062
@BritishRail60062 9 месяцев назад
@@jackclark94 For electric traction, I get it due to the costs of electricity being high. But these Class 60;s being diesel would surely be cheaper to run? They could be altered to run on Hydrogen by using mods similar to what Toyota, Honda and Yamaha having done with a combustion engine that runs on Hydrogen.

I had mixed emotions when they were new as they replaced the Cromptons on freight workings in the south east. They have become a favourite loco over the years though.
