thanks to your video. I got the sound she was looking for without spending too much money. In the blind test, I lean towards the BL21 prodipe, which is not expensive and is really the one I liked the most. On my double bass I got the same result as you show in the video. Many thanks for the great and well recorded comparison video. Initially I thought I would go with the t.bone Ovid, but them I changed from my EarPods to my Beyerdynamic DT990 headphones and then the differences became much more obvious. So I got me the Audix in a set with the Bassball.

Great test setup! I really liked the blind listening idea. I think the most interesting test was the one where you recorded with all the microphones at the same time. Otherwise the slight differences in your playing affected the results more than the difference between some of the microphones was. For my ears, the Prodipe BL21 sounded surprisingly good overall but I wrote down that I didn't like its sound with metal strings. For metal strings, the DPA was the best for my ears. ATM350 with cardioid pattern was good overall no matter which strings you had.

Amazing it's so easy to spot that dpa sound 😀👍👍 I'm really surprised with the sound presence of the audix. It Nicely gives frontal sound... I still think that the atm35 vintage brings Out the most familiar sound of the bass, but I do not like its Arco response to the point quite disappointing compared to the dpa which has way better gain sensitivity. I find this really strange how this is possible with that dvote 4099 mic. Anyways, congrats for such great contents. This video is really really very helpful for a lot out there who are still searching for their to go mic for gigs or studio work. I have made my choices on the atm35 and dvote4099 but I would be very interested to gig on that audix!

Hello and thank you for your time and good work producing this test. I have one comment. I work for a symphony orchestra. When we mic the orchestra for a pops concert, we use mics on stands for all the instruments except the cellos and basses. During breaks in rehearsals and during intermissions, it is very common for the cellists and bassists to carry their instrument off stage and then back on. Because of this, these musicians are constantly removing and reattaching the mics to their instruments. In this situation, the sound quality of the mic is of course important, but equally important is the ease with which the player can remove and reattach the mic quickly and without assistance. I have experimented with all of the mics you are testing here except the Ovid. I own all the other mics and also the Remic Contrabass mic. All of these mics are far superior to putting an RE-20 on a stand in front of the bass, but they differ a lot in the ease of mounting. The musicians that we work with seem to prefer the simplicity of the DPA system. I love the sound of the Remic, but mounting it is beyond the patience of the musicians. Ditto the Prodipe. The AT’s are an excellent choice too, but our musicians are used to seeing Neumann, DPA and Schoeps on stage. Even so, I keep my Remics nearby (love their piano mics for sound AND simplicity of setup) and for the occasional jazz bassist who seems to have a more open mind about trying something new.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix Год назад
Thank you for this information! The RE20 was never one of my favorites for bass. Strange that the musicians would have a problem if they see a mic from Remix or Audio Technica. They should respect your expertise. Yes, the ease of mounting is very important, I think the companies should consider this!

Hi Herve, thanks again for this very detailled review of 6 condenser mic's. My compliments! I do like very much the sound of the Prodipe BL21. Comparable with the DPA but much cheaper. I own the ATM 35 allready. When I use this mic on my bass I have to turn up the volume much more than for my underwood piezo element. So I have a question: offcourse I do know that it needs phantom power, but do I also need a preamp for these mic's?

2 and 7 would be my choices (4 is what I own and what I consider still okay-ish for the really modest price point). I like the position under the bridge more because it pics up less clicky-di-clacky noise from the strings hitting the fretboard. These sounds can be super cool but tend to clash with drums when not played super precise (read: when played by sub-precise players like me). Great shoot-out!

Thanks!!! double thumbs up!....just wondering I had some noise when I recorded with the DPA and I think is the rubber mount or maybe some where else . That the reason that you are using that foam close to the tail piece?
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 3 года назад
No not really. On another test I had the feeling that I heard a ringing from the pieces of string behind the bridge so just to be sure they don't ring I put the foam on for this test. Many parts of the mic or of the mount (or cable touching the bass) can cause noises. On my DPA tests I sometimes heard a noise from the foam around the mic that was vibrating against the mic. Not a loud noise but it will be difficult to eliminate it completely (the foam around the mic should be softer).

Very helpful, thank you. Do these clip microphones typically require phantom power? I’d like to be able to plug in directly to an amp? Are there amps made for, say, acoustic guitars that do a good job amplifying bass?
@jiovannitabada7679
@jiovannitabada7679 2 года назад
They are condenser mics, yes they need phantom power.
@MikkoRantalainen
@MikkoRantalainen 2 года назад
@@jiovannitabada7679 Do you need active adapters/converters for any of these? (For example, electret microphones usually require 3-5 V bias voltage whereas condenser microphones require 48 V phantom voltage and many XLR interfaces only support 48 V phantom voltage. As such, electret microphones require converter such as "Rode VXLR+" for use with XLR interface).

@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix Год назад
I don't know the Basik microphones. The DYN is schertler's contact microphone, right? It tested it once, but had some loud notes and some soft notes in the range. The Stat B is schertler's pickup if I remember correctly. On some basses it sounds great but it it important that it is very well installed.

Yes: I use an T-Bone/ovid attachment from Thomann. This fits on the strings between bridge and Stringholder (similar to the DPA attachment). I just had to remove something (one screw) to have an even surface so that the clip of the ATM holds well.

Thank you ! The bleed test was especially useful. Would you also consider a feedback résistance test ? I will prefer ten times a microphone without bleed and feedback over the nicest and warmest sound. (for exemple I heard the Prodipe is very sensitive to feedback if you increase the gain, even if the sound and price are good !) For studios situation, the sound engineers usually have their own great solutions for the double bass.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 4 года назад
Thanks for the suggestion. I am thinking of making a video comparing 3-4 possibilities in terms of bleed and maybe also feedback. Feedback issues also depend on the room, the amp/speaker (and the rest of the amplification if the bass goes into the PA), so that's not easy to test. We will see...

Hi, great video and playing! Question, how did you mount mic #3? Did it come with a clip for bass or did you use the DPA clip to clip onto? Also how long of a gooseneck for mic #3 because Audio Technica make a couple different lengths, 5" and 9" inch. Thanks so much.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 3 года назад
Hi Ric, I used the Thomann/Ovid mount that attaches to the strings below the bridge. I unscrewed the little Ovid attachment and then I could attack the gooseneck clamp easily. The gooseneck is quite short, I think 5 inch.

Thank you for posting a informative video as always! Hove you ever tried Super Silver bass strings? What do you feel comparing to Honey strings? I have a Honey G string. I really like the strong sound. However, it’s too stiff for me. Especially when I play solos. I have tried olivs too. They are best sounding bass strings I have ever tried.But I could not stand on the tuning stability and dullness of the sound. Evah are really easy to play but sounds weak and not good harmonic response.
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 3 года назад
Yes super silver are quite nice but with the synthetic wrapping they feel very different from honey. I also found honey a little stiff. I liked the super silvers at the beginning but somehow they sound a little "hollow" which I don't like. I use Oliv for g and d, they are also my favorite right now. It would be great to have a synthetic string that sounds like Oliv. But that doesn't exist yet....

Mic 1 wins. It has that True bass pronunciation and punch ( I'm not saying low end ). It has the sound you would expect from a high-end recoding of tunes in a studio. Mic 6 2nd place. A little shy of the Mic 1 but it does have a good listening tone. ALL the mics did better over the strings. The thing about all the other mics reminded me of hearing the Bass fiddle as if it were in a movie, not the sound you would expect from an album or CD or whatever format today.

Depending on the volume of the other band members and the volume you need out of your amp or monitor you can have problems with feedback or bleeding (sound from other instruments going through the bass mic). Is there a huge difference in recorded sound between using a clip mic or SDC microphone in terms of quality?
@stringmatrix

No. I would say the positioning is very important. I often recorded my bass (for CD productions) with my ATM-35 placed on a stand, just like you would place a SDC or a LDC. Sounded great and the engineer was happy (he would have had other mic as options).

How do you tackle that problem?. Thanks in advance StringMatrix!

Yes right, you need phantom power. There are devices on the market that will just give you phantom power (I think Mackie makes one, battery powered). Or you can buy a preamp like the EBS Stanley Clarke or the Headway. But that would cost a lot more.

I.ai un audio technico pro 35 super son de contrebasse mais pas utilisable sur clip dpa car il vibre sur les cordes et transmet un bruit parasite au son

Remic is the best bass mic system. Why didn't you test that?

Because I don't own one and neither do my friends in town. If remic sends me a mic I am willing to test it.

What about AMT S25B?
@stringmatrix
@stringmatrix 4 года назад
I never tried it and I didn't have a simple possibility to borrow it. If the AMT company is interested I can test that one too. And I also heard of "Remic", that can be interesting too.

Stringmatrix I’m using one (AMT) and it sounds great. I’ve asked just because I’m curious how it sounds compared to other mics you’ve tested.

Most clip mics I've seen used were placed over the f-hole on the g string side. Is that no longer "fashionable"?

@@romanchraniuk2330 Hi. I don't know if this is a good way to contact you. And I also have an AMT S25b for years now and cannot use it due to feedback issues. I would like to know how you connect it and with what amplifier. Thank you very much in advance. Greetings from Spain. Lorenzo Suárez

@@lorenzosm1644 I had the same problem while using AMT with EA Doubler head. When I’ve started to send microphone signal straight to the FOH and Realist pickup to my amp (I switched to 1988 GK 200MB) suddenly there is no problem. At least it’s not my problem anymore:) Good soundguys are dealing with it very well, bad soundguys... Well... If there is a bad soundguy than you don’t have much possibilities to have a great sound anyway:) My only issue with this mic is that after 10 years its gooseneck is a little bit “tired” in one spot and it’s not as stable as it should.

Too bad about the foam covers...the foam always degrades over time... :(

Ah peut être qu'il y a des possibilités de traduction automatique, mais je ne sais pas exactement...

They all seem to pick up a lot of string pluck/noise due to the avaliable placement. Might suitable to trad-jazz och rockabilly styles. #3 did best.
