I used to avoid climbing on steep overhangs because I thought it was super exhausting but that is probably because I was making a bunch of mistakes while climbing overhangs. Here are 6 mistakes that I've made and that I've seen others make while climbing overhangs.
0:00 What are overhangs
0:36 Mistake #1: Being Scrunched up or too stretched out
1:51 Mistake #2: Hips away from the wall or too close to the wall
2:44 Mistake #3: Not engaging your shoulders while climbing
3:15 Mistake #4: Climbing with bent arms
4:02 Mistake #5: Hip orientation stays square to the wall
4:53 Mistake #6: Keeping your toes on top of the holds

This was great advice, especially about the shoulders. To reach with your left arm, don't do a right bicep curl! Instead pull your right shoulder back and left shoulder forward! Was able to send overhangs for the first time today!

Hi! I just discovered your videos and I ❤️ them! Could you do a longer video about shoulder engagement? You are the first one I see mentioning it, and I don‘t find anything when searching for it (only exercises for strong or broken shoulders). I would love to hear your view!

Good ones, thanks ! It would be nice to have a short outro at the end, your videos always end very abruptly (but I still love them =p)

great video. How do you improve your time of grip? just training or with dedicaded workout?

There is a lot of different training for endurance, two of the most common things are 4x4s and traverse walls (or making a traverse on a chaos wall). That being said if you're still fairly new to climbing , just try to get more climbing in and the endurance will go up naturally.

I think #1 is a good general rule, but if you are more stretched out, often you can hold a static position easier and be closer to the wall. I think this is most true on roof problems where you have to do the move statically.

Yeah true as long as you have a solid foot hold or twist in place then you should be fine

I am a bit torn on the straight arms advice. Especially in over hangs, you often need to lock off with bended arms otherwise you simply won't be able to go up. I guess "keep your arms straight" it's a good starting point for beginners cause it forces you to be more efficient and get less tired, but the more one progresses the more I personally feel it's not applicable to every overhang scenario.

There's something to this. When your arms are in the locked off position, elbows bent around 90 degrees, you actually have the best mechanical angle for pulling, and as a result, it also uses less energy than any other bent arm angle. Straight arms are good for hanging, but the angle is the worst case for actually pulling - much of the force is wasted squeezing your bones together, with only a little actually in the direction of bending. So what you want is to spend as much time as you can either with straight arms, or with locked arms. What you want to avoid are slightly bent arms, which have the worst of both worlds.

As a taller climber I always feel to scrunched up or stretched
@SendEdition
@SendEdition 2 года назад
Yea, me too - I feel ya. I’ve gotten a lot of relief from feeling scrunched up by dropping a leg down kind of like a cat’s tail - have you tried that? What do you do when you’re in crunchy or stretched situations?
