Today I am going to look at one of the things I look at when considering buying a second hand motorcycle. If a motorbike has a loyal following, on forums and groups on social media, it shows that riders are coming together and sharing their stories. This means it can be a lot easier to find any information you might need. The owners are a valuable source of the sort of information it isn't easy to find otherwise.

Glad you included the HD sporty in there . Been riding decades now from super reliable japanese to overpriced german to stylish italian bikes and , i have to say , my little underpowered , loud af sporty is by far the most fun bike i have ever owned . i customise it to my liking with virtually a new make up every year (3 winter months are perfect to work on the bike). It is so easy to maintain and service yourself, commute on it for 9 months of the year (it gets cold in Leeds) met some amazing people , who like me are addicted to the potato /potato/potato rumble. Joined the "sickness" and still do a 2500 miles trip to Europe every year . Sportsters are the Marmite of motorcycles

Definitely not the VMax. Not the 1200 nor the 1700. I own both. Absolut fabulous bikes with huge community given to the relatively small amount of sold bikes. Those who know and are experienced enough to handle the VMax own at least one. The others just repeat the BS that was and is spread by those who never made it to own one. The VMax is a bike for experienced individualists, immune to the comments of the mainstreamers who need drive aids when the bike produces more than 50hp. I still remember some comments from Ducatisti like 30 years ago about the 1200 V4 of the VMax. Now, that Ducati found that way as well they praise the idea as if they would have invented Kryptonite. VMax rules and everyone who owns one knows ans the others don't care They will never understand that bike.

Most respectfully. It does not have a Cult like following, it is more like a Sect. Growing up in California the V-Max is kind of a drag bike that is reliable and cool. The Yamaha RD-350 and XS 750 have Cult like followings, in my reserved opinion.

As a former Cagiva Raptor owner i felt so proud when listening to Cagiva part. whenever i had problem or question the Community jumped with knowledge and instructions on how to fix things. they truly are rare and warm sight.

Came across this by accident. Excellent video. I currently have both a Bullet 500 (iron barrel, kickstart only) and Sportster (100th anniversary, stage 1 tune). Two very different bikes but both excellent for country lanes and backroads. No good on motorways but great for everything else. Will never get rid of either.

Great video and good choices. I think there is one other bike that has cult status, but tends to get overlooked because of its continued popularity: The Suzuki SV650. The SV has tons of character, it's as bulletproof as they come, it's crazy versatile, and $3,000US will land you a great used one all day long. There's one line that pops up in online discussions over and over again that I think says it all: "I never should have sold my SV." Honorable mention to the Honda Shadow 750 too.

I've been on 600cc sportbikes for 2 years and thought to get an old beat up sv as a daily run around. Loved it so much I sold my 600. Most times in recent history a Japanese brand has made a knock off Ducati it's resulted in an absolutely classic machine. Vtr1000 Firestorm is another good one for that category. Essentially a more burly sv650

Love your vids. Funny I have never owned any of the bikes you covered here. I did have a Yamaha SZR660 which had the makings of a great single but lost something in the translation that MZ seemed to have got right. In my fleet are a DR650 (About to ride around Oz) and a 1200 Bandit. Both are loved by many. The other bike I have with an amazing support group is the SR500. Stay upright and keep up the great work.

As an owner of over 200 motorcycles, I have found my MZ Skorpion to amaze me upon every ride. As a follower of British thumpers, the MZ has shown it's DNA repeatedly. It now wears dual-sport tires and full luggage, making it a high-mileage, every conceivable situation bike that brings a grin with every ride. Thank you for including it in your video.

I've owned many bikes, some great some not much. My bike now I ride the most is my XR 150. I have a Harley Sportster 883 also but it stays in the barn most days. I'm amazed at the big cruiser crowd that turns their nose up at a friendly gesture from a small displacement bike. I just smile and continue on feeling pity for the swell heads. Great video brother

You guys have a lot of offerings that I've not heard of.... this is the 2nd video that you've mentioned bike or manufacturers than I hadn't known about. It's great thing the internet offers in bring diverse bikes & peoples together to share. I'm amazed at all the niche's that have been created over the last 20 yrs. I'll be finding one as well & then a mechanic within that'll help me do the little things I can't do. Then I'll be in a cult too ! peace

Texas here & a lot of what/how these large manufacturers decide about an offering has a lot to do w/ things I know little about. You guys have different motorcycle licenses I guess by "Class/Size" while we can just GET On any old bike and go.....splat in many cases? They guess what we'll buy & tailor it according to Emissions(California law) & that's what we get but every Nation has it's own sets of laws that change the offerings? As you've said, no matter what I decide to do, there will be a "Click/Cult" of followers & experts on a given platform & they'll become how I get more educated on a bike. I'm kinda excited at 62 yrs of age.... funny huh? I love it & peace man

Thanks for another video to learn from. Being a bit old, my bikes are mostly the ones I wanted in my youth. My favourite touring bike is a Vincent. A bit pricey to buy but spares are cheap and everything is available. Owners are extremely helpful. We are even supplied with a list of owners all over the world in case of need for help. And rallies around the world to ride to. Another bike with complete spare parts supply is the short stroke Manx Norton, though parts are not cheap and some parts can take months to get. My other British bikes, Nortons, BSAs and Velocette has good spares part supply but some parts are hard or even impossible to get. I have more trouble finding parts for the Japanese race bikes, but so far I've managed to keep them running.

I’m glad you mentioned the Honda 919. 86,000 miles on mine with only frame issues. Comfortable bike. You mentioned rich boys toys but failed at ghetto boys toys. Right now, I’m loving my little Kawasaki Z 400. Definitely not the fastest bike out there but with the price of gas and everybody wanting to race you it’s perfect for around Town. no mention of another cheap thrill, the SV 650? Parts are plenty everywhere here in California. May I suggest that you do a cheap thrills video? Every episode that you’ve made is very good. Thank you

Excellent video’s thank you for sharing them. And you are right sharing experienced could save others a lot of trouble. I rode several motorcycles, I still have 3 and a sidecar for the winter. Mostly just for daily use because I get very bored in a car and I feel locked in these things. BMW is a little undervalued by you I think. Air heads and some later models are very simple and reliable, but expensive when you need parts. The airheads are very practical, as the K 75. You mentioned the MZ Skorion, I think it is practically ideal motorcycle and very underestmated. In corners they are surpriningly fast. The Honda Pan Eiropean 1100 ( I had two of them) are very good even in corners but when you are driving very slowly a little heavy. Strangly enough is a HD Electra Glide easier when yoy have to drive slowly. Last: The cbr 1000 f is very reliable and the most stable bike I ever had. Even stormy weather does not disturb it’s chosen line. Good luck with your video-channel and keep going on! Greetings from Holland

Welcome aboard mate, I have been honest, BMW are a brand i just dont know as well as i know most, so often they arent the bikes that spring into my mind, and in all honesty, every list i notice something i missed desprite spending sometimes weeks doing the thinning out process. im only human lol enjoy the ride and cheers for the support

I had a 125cc 2 stroke Cagiva from the 1985. My first proper bike. Had it for a year, nothing ever broke on it and that bike lived deep in the redline 100% of the time.

The fazers 600 and the 1000 similar to the hornets great bikes,good to see the content in your video is well done,and for triples as well as the triumphs ibhad the 1050 speedy,in garage now is another triple the MT09 tracer what a engine and for tinkering my 23 year old 600 fazer keep up the good work.

The Fazers were great bikes once, i have to say, the last one i had (a courtesy bike) was so badly put together though, none of the plastics really fitted together well, it rattled like no ones business, but that was a very late model, nothing like the old ones. I did like the MT09, but id have lost my licence too quickly if id bought one lol we nicknamed A mode as ASBO mode (if you arent UK based, an ASBO was and "anti social behaviour order") :-) i bet front tyre wear is really good on them lol

@barebonesmc yes uk based I run the tracer on standard mode and it can be as nice as a pussy cat or as feral as a wild cat depends on right wrist,the old fazer for a 23 Yr old machine has slight corrosion but has been garaged so easy cleaned up still runs superb after carb clean,keep up the content you're doing a great job and you can't fit every bike into the videos so we just watch more.

Nice one mate. I thought I would skip the MZ piece, but watched the lot!!. I used to use Royal Enfield in TQ presentations (years ago) of how being convinced you've "Arrived" can be your downfall. Honda man really - 2 CB750's from 1969 - one Sandcast, one Diecast, an early Z1 from 1972 - and at the OTHER end of the spectrum, a 1973 CD175. They used to repulse me in my teen (Superdream) years - but what an absolute stunner to look at today........ Love the channel pal 👍

I've owned my aprilia falco for 13 years. You have mentioned this bike in a previous video. The bike does have its problems, but owners are happy to give knowledge and experience on how to maintain these bikes. The rotax v twin is an absolute joy but thirsty if on and off the throttle. I've done track days and touring on this bike with runs to and from the coast for fish and chips and weekend riding. The bikes massive torque saves on gear changes and using the brakes due to the engine breaking. It's a joy to ride. There's only around 350 left in the UK but seriously under rated and a very fast motor bike from that era.

Aaah...yes the venerable Kettle, Water Buffalo...Suzuki GT 750 3 cylinder 2-stroke liquid cooled from the early 1970s! Had many modern bikes but the GT750 puts a smile on my face every time out. They are reliable bikes. There is a loyal following who keep these bikes alive and roadworthy even though they are 50 years old! We keep spare parts and whatever we can find stocked up to keep them going forever.

Having ridden many different bikes in the last 40 yrs, i would have to say the most helpful and loyal ridders and groups would have to be the Honda Goldwing communities. After finally purchasing one of my dream bikes, an early 80's Goldwing, the amount of help and advice i have received is unbelievable. the amount of information on the Goldwing forums is almost limitless. I have even had ridders i have never met, offer to help me out when stuck with a problem.

At one point a couple of years back I owned four Sportsters at the same time. I still have two. A 1975 bobber and a 1965 full chopper. I sold my other 1975 and my 2007. Servicing in New Zealand by the Harley dealer was extremely poor on the injected ones, hence why I sold the bike. At least the earlier ones are fully serviceable at home. I love the Sportsters as they are so forgiving of someone like me who has never been a good rider and the vibration of them is just the right frequency to put me in nirvana.

My 100th anniversary Sportster is a great dirt bike, and with Buell heads and 96HP, rocks pretty good on the asphalt (tarmac?) as well. The new Sporties really rip.

Another outstanding video, thanks. I'm partial to the late model HD Shovel Head bikes. I had a 1980 FXE, whi purchased in '82. It had the narrow tank with the clocks above the forks like a Sportster. It had about 3000 miles on it and cost me $3200. There were a few issues, the Kehin carburetor had a tendency to stall the motor at low speed, and for some reason when making a left hand turn. I replaced it with an SU from an old Austin Healey using an adapter I made in the machine shop I was working in. On first startup, it over revved and blew a hole in the back of the electronic ignition module. No sweat, I replaced it with a point set and was good to go. It never leaked a drop of oil, and took me everywhere I wanted to go. I truly loved that bike. Some idiot pulled out of a side street right in front of me and I had nowhere to go. T-boned the s.o.b. I wasn't hurt, but that black and chrome beauty was totalled.

As a lad I remember looking at the MZ TS 250 thinking it was the ugliest thing on two wheels. But as I grew up I saw MZ clubs at meets, I have marvelled at the vast array of personalisation, creativity and enjoyment people obtain from the MZ. Nice video! I do own the mz with a lot support of Bill. I also own a S2R 1000 which i really love, because it showed me how the ducati spirit is. Nice community as well. But the queen in look and feel including the community is my laverda 3Cl (Jota engine with nd setup) . I made friends with this brand and even found my wife who knew somebody who was as well addicted to laverda.

Another great vid. I think due to the internet most bikes have got some kind of forum. Out of my 4 bikes i love my 2001 1150gs but the forums are not quite the most welcoming. When i first bought it, most rides ended up coming home on the back of a recovery truck, i was wondering were the bullet proof reliability was, so i joined a GS forum explained my problems, and how i was getting to the end of my tether & felt like just selling it, i did not get any useful info just a load of abuse and why did i buy one then etc etc. A world away from the good old yam LC club i used to be in back in the day. Lol never bothered with the GS forums again.

it is funny how different peoples experiences are, id agree completely as an ex LC rider :-) with the GS riders, i was being slated yesterday by someone for not including them, my experience, breaking through the defensive crust of the BMW GS forums was much harder than many, and in the flesh, they dont like my dirty scruffy bike or my less than refined words lol but they do have a loyal following, i just need to be able to pick my bike up on a muddy slope when ive gone arse over t^t lol and not need a loan every time i break something lol

I’m a member of a Cult within in a Cult within a Cult LOL. So. Within the Cult of Honda, there is the Cult of FIREBLADE but also within that cult you have sub groups of riders that favor a specific model of FireBlade. I’ve never noticed any negative favoritism as within The Cult of FireBlade we ALL seemingly love ALL FireBlades but definitely have our favorites as well. I’ve been fortunate now to have 2 of the most obsessed over models, The 2003 954RR which is worthy of every unbelievable accolades put upon it. It’s that freakishly good. And The 2006 1000RR which is amazing in its own right. I love motorcycles and I especially have a weak spot for Sport Bikes, But the ones that catch my attention the most are FireBlades and the community has been pretty great. Nothing but a shared Love for the Blade

For a modern cult bike I would add my 2008 Suzuki B-King. Only a one year model in the US. It gathers a crowd at any event I ride it to. Fun level is off the scale! Styling was ahead of its time. Few believe it's really a 2008 model. 0-140 in 10sec but still puts through rush hour with ease.

In 1983, I rode a friends 1978 Fantic 125 Chopper, the feet forward riding position was strange for me as I owned a Triumph T160V at that time, the machine felt very light at the front end which was probably due to the long forks and small diameter front wheel. The top speed of these machines was a respectable 75 mph, which wasn't too bad for a 125 of the day, especially one that was in Chopper trim. These machines were considered a cult motorcycle from the day the first one rolled out of the Fantic factory, they are very collectable today and if you can find one for sale, it won't be cheap. A seventies oddity that I'm glad that I got he opportunity to ride one of them.

Thanks Mr Barebones. Interesting video with fab bikes on the list. Two boring Bikes of mine that didn't make the cut are Yamaha xv750 Virago and xj900 Diversion. Chalk and cheese. The Diversion is a bit top heavy so I miss the long gone low slung Virago sometimes. You can lean right over with XJ900 though with it's massive grip and fab torque for overtaking most things on the road. Both have a fairly good following. Keep threatening to get something smaller, since I'm no speed demon, but the GF won't let me. She likes a big powerful bike with a big pillion seat and a back rest.😂

At the time I started riding I could not afford a Honda CB750. Now, almost 5 decades later that situation has not changed. Well, I guess I could if I wanted to enough but the prices for decent ones are quite ridiculous. So my next (and propably last) bike will be something else, at this moment in time a V-Strom might be the answer even if it is a bit of a compromise for me. Since 2012 I´ve had a Kawa Vulcan, I´m still otherwise happy with it but it is hard on my back so I only do short rides for the moment. Something like a ADV riding stance is what I hope to find, for a sensible price. Up here in the north (Sweden) the season is short and motorcycles are a decadent and expensive luxury so a good, used Transalp or a V-Strom might be the right way to go. Liked your choices for this video, refreshing with a channel that shows realistic options.

Subbing! I have ridden my whole life my last bike was a Valkyrie std. miss that bike. Had a stroke 7 years ago. Thought my bike ridding days were over!!! My balance is gong, the worst of the result of my Stroke! Other than that I survived better than most in my rehab. Then I found the Spyder and thought!!! 3 wheels, maybe I could ride that! Yes, Yes I can and do quite often!! I’m back in the wind!!!! YEA!!!!

Oops hit the wrong button I was going to say deja vu to the nth degree! . As regards anything you missed, my breaths of experience would not be so brazen as to suggest one, but I must say that my initial 1958 BSA A7 standard 500cc twin took a huge amount of abuse and kept on ticking. Leaked more oil than a West Texas oil well, but you can't have everything. This was before unit construction, and it was a work of art despite the oil splashes all over it. I became known as the Permatex Kid, which I did not live down until a few motorcycles later when I got the Suzuki Titan. It didn't corner worth a damn, but it didn't leak any oil either which was a fair trade. Enjoy your presentations mightily. Thank you.

you forgot the yam xs650 , one of the most adaptable bikes to build anyrhing u want ,, plus unlike the early honda 4 / kaw 900 etc dont have the big price tags ,u can also buy remanufactured parts almost to the stage of building a complete bike including the parts to correct the few original build defects ie taped steering head bearings / bronze swing arm bushes etc etc , they definitly have a cult following around the world . even in england

Affordable and big enough to not wanting to trade up in a few months. I went on a 9month road trip halfway across America the 1st year I owned it.

It's interesting how we all have our personal experiences because it was my own experience of the Sportster Sickness group who put me off ever owning a Sportster. The Honda CBF1000 and the old CB500 twin have a good ownership following on facebook who are always happy to help with secondhand parts or advice with a wealth of knowledge about the models. I've also had a decent experience with groups for the new Bonneville T120 but I don't think quite as good as the Hondas.

As you say, interesting the difference,, the CB500 owners would have been in there without doubt if i hadnt already included the biike in the bombproof bikes video, i probably should have mentioned it at the beginning with the Vstrom etc. with the various Triumph owners, as with the Harleys i think there is a defensive crust you have to break through at times :-) but once you do its a different story. What i found to be fair, is that meeting people in a forum and actually talking to them in person can reveal a very different story too, especially if i turn up on a battered old bike covered in mud with different coloured panels where ive just replaced a broken bit with something i picked up and not got around to respray lol, enjoy the ride

DRZ community’s are amazing, if you ride off road, street or a squid there are many groups and forums. As the bike is still produced (not sold in Europe) and not changed there are always new owners asking the same question ‘what oil do I use’ but these are always answered although sometimes there are sarcastic remakes 😂 I also own two Zx7r and the forums and groups cover both road and track - I have had many questions as I am restoring one and I get loads of replies.

I've ridden a Sportster for about 16 years now, after a lifetime on some great UJM models (the now rare 1981 GS450S being my favorite of that lot). Last year when buying an RE Himalayan I got my first in-person look at a Classic 350 Reborn. As happy as I was with my new Hamalayan (still am), I couldn't get the 350 out of my head. Six months after buying the Himalayan I went back for the 350. I totally understand the relationship between the Sporty and the Classic 350. They are as close as one can get to owning and riding a "barn find" classic motorcycle as one can get without spending a year's salary. Within the constraints of modern government regulation, each design has distills everything about motorcycling down to only the pure essentials.

now you see i know perfectly what you are saying here and have just been talking about something that i think Royal Enfield are underestimating. Will buyers go for the newly designed Himalayan with its higher revving more powerful water cooled engine? will RE drop the old air cooled Himalayan too? and why oh why is it taking so long to make a 650 Scrambler by putting stilts on the 650 Interceptor?

My 1975 Honda CB 750F I bought as the 2nd owner after the original owner (my BF) was killed on her with just 966 miles on the OD in 1976. She now has 899k miles on her. RIDE FREE my friend and RIP Eric.

2004-2006 XL1200C is the bike to get. 80-90hp, single carb, and rubber mounted motor. Great bike! Fast, fun, and super comfort for all day riding.

I'd like to bring Moto Morini to your attention. Technically amazing motor! Sadly, the 500 S suffers from a weak gearbox. But the story is worth a closer look. As well as the spanish Sanglas. Never owned one of both brands. But they just came to my mind. A hint about MZ: a guy in Poland combined 2 250 2-stroke Motors to build a 500ccm twin. The same manner, in which the 500ccm Ossa Yankee was built (It was the wish of the US importer. Thus the name). These brands and bikes are surely worth some research. Maybe some readers here can already provide more information. Greetings from the far north of Germany!

The yamaha fj1100/1200. The 86 fj1200 was my first motorcycle. I put 14,000 miles on it. In 2 1/2 months. Then totaled it out. When a cb1100 crashed in front of me around 135mph. Then owned many other bikes. Came back to the fj1200 when my buddy offered me his 86 fj1200 with 10,000 miles on it. That was in storage for many years. Now out of the 13 bikes that I own. 7 are fjs. They were the only engine allowed in the legend race cars. So until a couple of years ago you could get a brand new crate motor from yamaha. RPM. manufacturers fj specific parts. And also stocks most parts for the old fjs. My latest projects are a turbo fj1200. And resurrecting an 85 vmax with 4,100 miles on it that's been in storage for 24years.

I have owned all of the triumph triples except the rocket 3.. Had the daytona 955... Too much fun.. My favorite all time was a black and Chrome speed trip9 55. Currently got a great deal on some older BMW R 1100 SR1150R roxter.. Great handling great value and one of them only had 6000 miles

We have chatted before. The Sydney-based NSW Laverda Club are at the moment on a mid 4000km ride from Sydney to Tasmania and back, mostly triples out of the 15 going but I think a few twins included. So locally they definitely get ridden far and hard. I have done 2 earlier trips but not this time sadly.

being honest mate, i seem to get on with the Aussie Laverda crew better than i do some of the English ones lol, did you see the SF2 ive just finished? i keep getting people giving me lists of what ive done wrong in their eyes lol and i know they arent so popular but i still miss my Zane hand grenade too lol, nothing ive ever ridden rides as nicely as the Zanes Laverdas

Yamaha xv1000TR1. not a cult classic in nz, there are only 3 on the road here, although turning them into cafe racers seems to be a thing overseas. I do a bit of gravel riding, nice light stock bike, more power and torque than my old cb750 at less revs, air cooled short stroke v twin, enclosed chain, good monoshock, a beauty of a five speed box, superb mid range, will rumble around or muscle up with a twist of the wrist. Would be interested to see you ride one if you get the opportunity. Great show!

More than 3 ! I have 2 and know of others , 12 all-up I believe . And Yes.. it's one of my favorite bikes . I have opened-up the-exhaust and air-box, put bearings on the-cams and a host of other little-things that all made it run better , putting-out over 70hp now . Virago-1100 inner-valve-springs are next along with a different mild-port-job Dave nz

7:00 - 9:40 Old-mate fanging it on the RE, cows and all - legend! 👍🏻😁 I have a 2011 Sprint GT 1050 and can’t decide whether I love it or meh. The engineers went out of their way to make simple jobs complicated - remove all the body panels to swap out the LED taillight for example. But it’s a lot more fun than my 2016 T-120 and the triple soundtrack is glorious with a few knots on.

As for the sportster, whether it be an old iron head shovel or evolution, you really cant go wrong, they are as close to bulletproof as any Harley has ever been. I sold mine for more than i paid brand new in 1984, the Evo is probably the best Harley ever made. I don't like the twin cams big blocks because they have lots of timing faliures untill S&S corrected that with the geardrive upgrade.

my days of riding my triumph are over long ago as my age is against me ..I was born in 1944 ..but my 1949 650 speed twin was about the fastest bike available and very reliable when I was in high school .. I have been a triumph aficionado ever since ...!

Currently I've got a Suzuki SV650 which has a good forum. Lots of advice, some of which you need to take with a grain of salt, especially suspension mods. Still a great resource though. I've been in forums for the KLR and 70's CB's as well, all of them excellent, but you need to exercise some caution with advice, eventually you figure out who knows what they're talking about.

Manx Norton AJS 7R 1940 Indian Four Vincent Black Lightning BSA Rocket Gold Star Triumph Bonneville T120 All vintage classics....😍🥰😎 This reminds me, one of my colleagues at work rides a new Royal Enfield I don't remember if it's a Bullet or Interceptor, either way....he LOVES the bike!

interesting choices 🙂 re the Enfields, they have won lots of fans. TBH Siddhartha Lal, the guy who runs the company, is a genius when it comes to marketing and delivery of service. parts supply is so much better than any of the big players it makes them look a bit silly
