Thank you SO MUCH for sharing your Algonquin experiences! I used to do canoe trips once a year there about 30 years ago ! I no longer drive so I have been seriously depressed that I can't go there now, I have recently come across your videos and watching them has brought a HUGE peace upon my Algonquin heart ! I have a large home theater and I sit and watch your trips over and over again and relive my past experiences through your videos! Thank you so much , I only hope I can somehow make the 4 hour trip back one day before I can no longer do it !! Cheers , and keep up the great work.

I just love your style of doing these, and I watch a lot of channels. Love Lost Lakes too, but what I love about yours are no background music, lots of silence, just enough explaining, which is what it is like out there. Many of the routes you take I have been on through in Algonquin so a real treat. Excellent job and thank you for all the work you have done with these videos.

Wonderful video Kev. I canoe tripped in the 70's/early 80's through many routes in Algonquin and ended up being a tripping guide for a few years. You captured the serene vibe of the park. Once I lead a group and we did the Dixon - Bonfield portage into Opeongo at 5am. We were on Opeongo by around 6:30am and it was glass. Lucky for us, because we had to be at the portage store by 1pm for a pre-arranged pick-up. We made it just in the nick of time. I've had some other adverntures on Opeongo and did a lot of tacking down the lake on some trips to make it safely back to the portage store. Fond memories indeed.
@kevinthewild
@kevinthewild Месяц назад
Thanks for sharing some of your memories. Starting that portage at 5am was the smart thing to do if you had to get across Opeongo by that time. Glad it all worked out!
@Foxtrotromeo721
@Foxtrotromeo721 Месяц назад
@@kevinthewild The backstory is a careless navigational error on Lavielle the day before put us behind schedule to be camped on Opeongo that evening. Making and braking camp at the Dixon & Bonfield portage helped us make up for that navigational mishap. As I had a group of campers in my care, I was under some degree of pressure, knowing the risks with Opeongo. Thanks again for sharing your trips.

Algonquin is so amazing, I miss it so much. It's a long drive from Pennsylvania, but I did it over a dozen times over the last 40 years. Related to your trip, I've done Opeongo (with and without the water taxi), Happy Isle, Merchant, Big Trout, Big Crow and Proulx. Thanks for showing me Hailstorm Bay, La Muir and Hogan. The loons still call me.

Also you may already know this, but I love how you pointed out the 'tea-stained' stream. Thats an excellent sign of Hemlock (Tsuga Canadensis), the pigmentation of the water is from the natural tannins of Hemlock, what they used to tan leather. Wonderful tree, and I love the coffee water!

Once the lakes begin to freeze over the backcountry camping sites are closed. I’m not sure if the backpacking sites remain open a bit longer. Not long after winter camping is permitted. You still have to purchase a permit and follow the rules and regulations that are implemented for winter camping.
