I assembled one of these with legs upside down by accident and it's more comfortable. Great video by the way. Simple, no superfluous information. I think you need a bit of experience to follow it, but most people have a bit of experience before they decide to make a chair. Every other chair build on RU-vid seems excessively complicated.
Hahaha although I knew an old school.wood worker who had a concret company do a super level 10x15 spot on his floor. Hahaha these guys he hired had a laser leveled self guided rig to get it ultra precise. He did large batches and said he was to old to climb on a big table. He would mass assemble like you did on this project. Worked for him he was always backorder.
i love these chairs and definitely want to make them. My boyfriend is 6'6 so i wanted to ask if I wanted to make the chairs a bit taller, what length for the legs would you recommend?
Just found the channel last night and have watched almost every video . Good stuff !!!! This is exactly what I was looking for . Awesome product without $50’000 worth of tools and joining equipment.
Thank you so much! I really appreciate that. I really like trying to find ways to build nice stuff without really expensive tools that no one has. I hope to continue making many more projects that everyone can build. Thank you for the views!
From the video I'm not too confident in the strength of the chairs with the butt joints and the pocket holes. How are they holding up till now? Would be very interesting to know!
I haven’t had any issues and we use them all the time. The only joints I would be concerned about at all are the braces near the floor. I don’t let the kids stand on the braces even though I have seen them do it, an it hasn’t seemed to hurt anything.
@@DIYMAN I'm gonna make a jig for cutting the legs on my table saw. I'm gonna look up your Facebook page. I been building tables for about a year now. My page is Stout Farmhouse Designs. I would like to bounce ideas off of you in the future. Thanks for the great video.
I preciate you explaining what each piece goes to as you cut them. I already have a table made an may need to make the chairs taller so that helps. Great video, quick an too the point.
You’re welcome! I think there’s a shortage of detailed videos like this. General “how to’s” don’t help when you need to to a good height or width on something
A dowel and flush trim hand saw work great for filling the kreg holes, and a lot cheaper. Awsome project. I will be building a set of these soon. Oh and you can dilute Elmer glue down with water to a paint consistency and paint it, wait about 30 to 45 minutes and paint over with a chaulk paint or other similar paint and it will crackle out.
Hi DIYMAN! I LOVE this table and set of chairs............any chance you ended up drawing plans for the table and the chairs? My son has been getting into woodworking and has used a Kreg Jig so could totally make these.
Sure! Check out our Facebook page “Affordable Backyard Woodworking”. I’ll post that photo for you. You’re talking about the rear leg and back piece right?
Thanks Man! That’s the point. I’m always trying to find videos that do things with the most basic tools. Videos do me no good if they have expensive tools I can’t use anyway.
Hey DIY Man, these look great! I'll be building my own table and chairs within the next couple months. Do you happen to have an idea of the materials you'd need for 8 chairs? Thanks!!
I recommend building my newest chair design in the link below. I simplified the design quite a bit and you can just multiply the materials list in the description by how many chairs you need. Hope this helps! m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a3cheXcgX5I.html
I have a free instructable of a very similar chair. The only difference is that I used 3/4” materials and the back legs are a little more simple. www.instructables.com/How-to-Build-the-Easiest-Dining-Room-Chair-Ever/
What height table do these go with? Id like to build some for my mom but she has a 36" high table top and id like to figure how much longer i should make the legs?
LOL... I do agree about building a work table next. But hey... if it works for you then keep on doing it. Anyway... this was great. I guess in my mind chairs are "hard" to make. So this was a great video on how you can do it
I love this video. You are so detailed and take your time explaining. The wife wants farmhouse chairs that are sturdy. We bought those metal things that were so popular and basically they SUCK!... lol. This is a great build. Only thing better would be actually having drawn out plans to follow. Look forward to checking out your channel and becoming a new subscriber. 👍🏻
Thank you! That’s great! I agree, there’s nothing like making things for yourself. I really love these chairs and I’ve been toying with drawing out simple plans and selling them, I’ve just been kinda lazy. Lol. Anyway, thanks for the sub! I’ve got some great video ideas I’ll be working on in the next few weeks. Hope to see you in the comments on the future videos!
Hey DIY MAN, Awesome videos, I am working on the table now and almost finished. I am starting the chairs on Saturday. I noticed after reviewing the material and cut list to make sure I have everything that there is not anything about cutting the 2x4's to any size or that you ripped some of them in half. I am hoping to post a few pics to the Facebook page of the table top tonight. Love your videos. Also quick question, I didn't get an oil based white paint, is that okay or should I return it and get an oil based paint?
Thanks man! I’ll make a note of those cuts on the cut list! I appreciate your input! I’m looking forward to seeing some of your pics on the Handmade DIY Projects page!
Man!!! doing that much of accurate cutting almost by hand, i mean without a table saw or a work bench... i'm impressed! do you thing the pocket holes could hold a person after hours and hours of sitting?? i've always been afraid of making chairs without tenons.
Thank you! I plan on building a nice shop with some nice work benches very soon, but this video just goes to show that anyone can create some nice furniture with a little bit of patience. And the chairs are still holding strong. They haven’t shown any sign of loosening up in almost a year.
I am in the process of building these chairs I am at the point to where I have cut the seats the 2x10 at 20 inches and 18 3/4 for the others then made the other cuts from 20 inches down to 18 3/4 on six of them the other six at 18 3/4 down to 17 1/2 when you line these boards up you have one side at an angle and the other side is straight so what have I done wrong? Please help I don’t understand why you would only cut one end of the seat boards and not the other.
I really recommend cutting these boards straight at 17.5 or 18” to make it as easy as possible. It looks just as good. However, if you want to cut the angles, I’ll try to make it a little easier to understand. First, cut 6 @ 20” Angle both edges from 20” down to 18 3/4” (In other words, mark 5/8” in from the two back corners and make a line from those to the two front corners) Cut 6 @ 18 3/4” Angle edges down from 18 3/4” to 17 1/2” (In other words, mark 5/8” in from the two back corners and make a line from those to the two front corners). I hope this helps you!
DIY MAN yes thank you so much for your help I was really confused but now it makes perfect sense the way you just explained it. Thank you for your quick response also.
Thank you! I built the first chair in about 2 hours to make sure the design would work correctly. Then it took me about 5 more hours over the course of 2 more days to build the last 5 chairs. The staining, painting, and polyurethane took me three days because I had to wait between coats before applying the next coat. I think it took about an hour to do each coat. Your looking at about 10-12 hours of work.
Hi Man. I am Mario from Brazil. Congratulions for your work. I love woodwork, making furniture or crafts and i am taking the opportunity to study and improve my english with your video. Well, i have a small carpentry in my backyard. although i am retired, i make some furniture and crafts for hobby. thank you. God Bless you
@@DIYMAN yes, i did see that the back is in an angle but I wasn't sure about the front. Thanks for the clarification. I'm going to try to buil my own soon. Thanks for an excellent video
Yes I do. Here is a video from a set I just recently built. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z4Qj23PAQ1g.html I added some extra bracing to be sure but they are pretty sturdy!
Mike, I’ve got that material and cut list you asked for loaded in the description. Be sure to join my Facebook group on “Handmade DIY projects” and share pics of your completed table and chairs!
I try to explain it better in the description, but the easiest way is to just cut your 1x10s straight at 17.5”. I made another chair like that and it honestly looks better
@DIYMan this video is great! I’m planning to make these as a housewarming gift for my wife. The trouble is, our counter top is at 36”. I’m trying to sort out how to adjust dimensions for the rear legs/uprights to bring the seat up, just a touch ~3”. Do you have any ideas how that night change the inner leg cut or even the overall length of those uprights? Thanks for the great content man! I’m watching all your stuff.
Thanks! That’s awesome! I recommend a 24” seat height for a 36” counter top. Ive got another chair video coming out in about a week that is going to be a considerably easier design. You’ll see when the video comes out, but you can simply add the extra length you need to the bottom portion of the chair legs, and everything else could be done exactly the same.
Hey brother.I stared my cut list but I noticed that you never mentioned to cut 12 at 16.5 for front legs I’m wondering if that’s what I need to do thanks again for video.
Yes. You’ll need 12 16.5” 2x4s that have been ripped down to 2” wide for the front legs. Thanks! I would eventually like to make a new version of this video that is a little easier to follow.
Thank you! I’ll get the tools and equipment as I get the money, but that’s half the point in these videos. Most people can’t afford all these fancy woodworking tools and need ideas how to make quality DIY items.
What are the finished dimensions of the chair seats? It can't be 20" at the widest since you cut 6 pieces out of 120" (the total length of the 2x10) which doesn't take the blade width into account.
So I can’t remember the specifics, but when you cut the angled part of the seat with your miter saw, you should be able to flip over the board and cut the other side and direction. This should make up the difference for you. It’ll save you a few dollars to do that.
I have never done that, but I’ve considered making some that way, I would recommend installing the upper and lower portion of the seat back then marking out one angled piece on the back then attach it with a nail gun. I would individually cut out the two last pieces to look like one solid piece and glue and nail those in as well. Like I said, I’ve never done it, but that is how I would imagine doing it
Awesome! Post some pics on our Handmade DIY Projects FB page when you’re done please! I’d love to see them. Thanks! I’m getting there. It’s a slow process!
Where did you get lumber that cheap? I've calculated and it would cost me around 250€ in Slovenia (Europe) for edge glued panels. That's approximately 290$.
Dimensional lumber is very cheap in the U. S. Or I should say it was. It has almost doubled since Covid-19. I could still build 6 of them here for around $150-200. But I bought all the lumber for this project at Lowe’s.
@@DIYMAN I understand the price difference now. As far as I understand, dimensional lumber is used for house framing. In Slovenia, almost everybody builds with porotherm clay bricks and as far as I know, dominant construction material in USA is lumber. Hence the lower lumber price in USA. I think I will buy lumber directly from a farmer (dryed) and have it run through a planer. I'll have to make some extra cuts, but it will be much cheaper that way. And thanks for a reply and awesome content :) Have a good day! :)
Awesome! You can definitely make some really nice looking furniture from a farm like that. You’re welcome! I’m happy to do it. By the way, Slovenia is awesome. I’ve been there before and it’s beautiful.
Set your miter saw blade at a 4 degree angle. On the 20” boards, Angle edges from 20” down to 18 3/4” (In other words, mark 5/8” in from the two back corners and make a line from those to the two front corners) On the 18 3/4” boards, Angle edges down from 18 3/4” to 17 1/2” (In other words, mark 5/8” in from the two back corners and make a line from those to the two front corners)
@@DIYMAN Thank you for explaining. By doing this we are making a Trapezoid shaped seat. The front will be 20" and the back will be 17 1/2" - did I understand correctly?
I may have made a mistake. I’ll try to look at those measurements a little more closely. In the meantime, I recommend cutting the seat tops straight at 17.5”. I made them this way on some other chairs and the seats look just as good. These high chairs are identical except the seat height and the straight cut seat top. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Z4Qj23PAQ1g.html
They’re not too bad. There are obviously softer chairs with pads and all that but they sit up at the right angle and they are not too hard on the back.
This man is a beast!!! I see other guys always gotta have a work bench, gotta have a great work bench!! This man said fuck a work bench and sat on the garage floor like a buddah!! Good stuff bro 👍
I've been sub'd for a little while now, and love the way you look at a project. I can understand where, how, and why you approach an idea the way you do. But after this video, you may have to give up "DIY MAN" and be renamed to the "Cross Legged Wood Worker" haha. No offense, I often find myself on the garage floor too! The knees are old!!!
I really appreciate the comment! Thank you! The Cross Legged Woodworker would be an excellent name! Ha, I’m hoping I’m done on the ground though😂 the exception is if I have any big projects or more metal. I’m sure I will struggle to walk when I’m in my 60s 😂
@@DIYMAN I always have that "someday" thinking when I'm on the garage floor putting something together (last night), and I agree it'll be hard to be mobile when I'm older. love your simple method to doing these projects! I'm going to do the table and chairs as well, but I'll make them all bar height!
I appreciate that. It’s nice to know that you don’t have to have all that stuff to build great stuff though. It drives me nuts when people aren’t willing to do some jobs without the perfect setup. Love the bar height idea! Best of luck!
I went to the hardware store to get wood pricing and they asked me what kind of wood was I looking for. Anyone know what kind of wood I should ask for?
I have a more detailed description of the chair back design on our Facebook page (Affordable Backyard Woodworking) then I have started to upload some of my newest designs to Instructables. www.instructables.com/member/DIYMANcreations/
I built the first chair in about 2 hours to make sure the design would work correctly, then I built the other 5 in about 5 more hours over the course of 2 days. The staining, painting, and polyurethane took 3 more days because I had to wait for it to dry between the coats. About 9-10 hours worth of work over the course of 5 days.
We have a food bank that I'm an active volunteer at and there requesting furniture. Your table and chair would be the perfect project since they are low cost to make. Probably only put one coat of stain on it, however.
Awesome! I’d love to see your finished product if you do it. I created a Facebook Page called Handmade DIY Projects just to share pics of finished stuff like that.
@@DIYMAN I just joined your FB group. I designed the chair last night in Sketchup. Didn't really like the design I made so I will redesign it today. The wood cost to make a single chair is around $5.00 by using one 2X6 that is 8 feet long, which is Whitewood. Southern Yellow Pine would cost $6.00 a board.
I'd like to know how these chairs are holding up after use. I'm not saying anything bad about them, I just worry that with all of the endgrain joints, that you are relying on the pockets screws into soft wood an awful lot. I worry that they are going to get wobbly pretty fast.
I made these for myself. We have kids, and you know how hard they are on stuff. I haven’t had any issues with the joints yet. I wondered about that too so I have started using my screw an dowel method a lot more on heavily used furniture, and it is considerably stronger. Most of the joints in these chairs could be joined using this method. m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ej1CWb4E7_E.html
@@DIYMAN that's great to hear. Like I said, I wasn't trying to be negative and I hope it didn't come across that way. I was genuinely curious about how they were holding up. Thanks for the follow up.
I don’t have plans for the dining room chairs, but I do have an instructable for a high chair that is identical except the front and back legs. The front legs on the dining chairs should be 16.5” and the back legs will follow the pictures below. All other measurements (except seat height) should be the same. www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Build-a-High-Chair/
Thank you! No, there is no degree cut at the back of the chairs. Just measurements and lines from those measurements. I have a closer pic of the leg design on our Affordable Backyard Woodworking page if you need it.
Check the description below the video. I tried to explain it a little better down there. If it’s still tough to figure out, I recommend cutting them straight. They look good that way too.
Great video except cutting with the grain with a miter saw. That’s rather dangerous and there’s a better tool for it. Either a circular saw or table saw.
I am gonna do this, I need dinner table and chairs, I am glad found this how to DIY, I think I can do this projects, but I will go to house developer where they build a houses, they always dump good woods and I will cut and collect whatever they dump some good woods, I will save my money from buy new woods... I am earth saver....
I think teaching how to make one so people ca replicate would be better, so many numbers for a specific amount kind of gets you off to find a faster video
Yeah, this was one of my first videos. I made another video that was a little easier to follow because of that. I had people asking way too many questions. Lol ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-a3cheXcgX5I.html
Ha! I’m hoping to start working on some nice benches very soon once I get a shop built. They would definitely make it way more comfortable when working.
