The key to proper tennis serve technique is achieving a nice deep loop / drop behind your back where the racquet starts to accelerate towards the ball.
Before you jump to technical drills that will improve your drop, know that there may also be mental causes for why you have a shallow loop in the serve.
The video above shows you 6 serving drills to help you deepen the drop but it also gives you some food for thought on what might hold you back like the desire for control and having a linear mental image of the serve.

Thank you Thomaz, I have two degrees in engineering, and I see and I am amazed how subtle and clearly you can apply and explain the laws of physics when teaching tennis. Also, you have an excellent understanding of human behavior and the way our thinking affect our tennis. YOU ARE A GENIUS TENNIS COACH !!!!

Uauuu!!! I’ve seen lots of videos about this and I was totally frustrated by the approach coaches use to explain. You nailed it my friend!!!! It’s perfect, clear, excellent language, pace and the fact you divided the instructions in technique and mental parts is the key to a complete understanding and development we all need. Thank you vey much. You’re the best I’ve seen.

The letting the racquet dangle, feeling the weight of the racquet head, it such a great tip. And the tennis serve swing as a "circle" is genius. A lot of WTA pros don't even do it. The best servers in the world have a violent "circle". Sampras, Roddick, Kyrgios perfect examples.

I think we all know that Tomasz is a genius who understands tennis completely. What we might not grasp is how articulate -- even brilliant -- are his language skills. Do you see how long the 'takes' are and how he speaks logically, continuously and calmly? Hollywood would be delighted if an actor could memorize and deliver 'lines' as flawlessly as Tomasz --- except Tomasz is thinking as he is talking!

agreed 100% he's the best tennis teacher who understand the source of the problem and he is able to explain exactly what went wrong and what would be the solution. I do not believe all teachers can do this. Only a few teachers can present the cause and effect so well. The people disliked this video probably have no idea about the complexity of this sports

You have an absolutely exceptional way of explaining both the practical way to achieve a given tennis skill and the conceptual idea(s) and understandings behind why/how the needed movements produce the better result. Many online tennis instructors are good at one or the other (practical/conceptual) but nobody does both like you do. Much of what you describe has has effected my serve and/or still is but I am far enough along the path of improving my serve to know now that with more work I am going to get to that serve that I can be proud of. I've only been playing 4 years (starting at 57) but nothing I have learned from anyplace is as helpful as the idea that we have to "feel" the right movements and when we know the "feeling" well we get confident that we can reproduce it at will.

When I finally feel confident that I have a decent racket drop. my next goal will be to work on your pronation video. I feel doing 2 major changes at once is too much for me. I will be hitting the courts 3 time per week for 30-40 minutes of serving and I ordered the serve master too. I have been a 4.0 player for way too long. These changes will get me to 4.5 one day

Great explanation about the issues with the serve. I am an advance player , but coming back from injury it took me a while to get the "feel" back . I found using the exercise of freely swinging the racquet before I play gets the shoulder warmed up and also reminds me how the serve should feel . I also use it late in matches where I may be getting tired and stiff...

Tomaz, just wanted to let you know that I frustratingly worked for close to a year on getting a racquet drop and finally had a breakthrough after seeing your step 6 "dangle serve". Working from that position is what gave me the feeling of allowing the racquet and arm to relax and feel the true (centripetal) force. Thank you!!
@vectorthurm
@vectorthurm 6 лет назад
Actually, just to give you feedback..what really helped is instead starting very loosely (dangle) at the trophy or around it and allowing myself to feel it swing around very relaxed. It also shows me how it feels with the rest of my body rotating at torso and coming around.

This is sooo good tutorial! Even though You repeat yourself a lot, it has a purpose of reinforcing mental memory of what You said. I gonna construct a tennis prop of used racquet handle and balls on a elastic string, and I gonna practice service motion loop. I guess the hardest thing between shadow movements and actual ball toss, is little discrepancy in timing (synchro). If You would like to make this loose loop and hit the ball in right spot, your toss must be very low. If You use higher toss, then there will be a moment when racquet stops for a split second (or moves very slowly) at the drop phase. This doesn't affect racquet trajectory, but this slowing down (or stopping) changes your timing and allows for subtle adjustment for your toss. I love that Your tutorial have this insight and true understanding of the process, opposing other where tutors just explain general movement leaving the feel behind. Great job!
