Ducks are some of my favorite birds to watch in early spring because they get active so quickly in the season, and have a huge variety of really cool behaviors that are super easy to see.
This video shows you 6 of the most common behaviors and things to look for in dabbling ducks like Mallards during spring:
1. Male vs Female
2. Courtship behaviors
3. Dunking vs Dabbling (Bathing vs Feeding behavior)
4. Solo Males (And Territorial Behavior)
5. The Mating Dance
6. The Following Quack (Nesting Call)
Other dabbling ducks relevant to this video include the American Black Duck, American Wigeon, Gadwalls, Pintails & Teals.

Thank you for sharing! My partner and I caught this act today on our walk and it was surprising! I've watched enough BBC nature docs to recognize that the head bobbing HAD to be a mating ritual, and then indeed, it was quickly followed by the male getting on top of the female. It was all done so quickly! However, the BEST and most surprising part had to be the "Victory Lap". It was so cute and surprising, seeing this duck stretch out its neck and propel itself in a circle like a boat. It was adorable!! I was googling this behaviour and wanted to learn more about why they did this. I guess it simply is an act of pride!

Awesome video! Learned so much today. I have ducks visit my pond every spring only now I understand their behaviours. I'm considering building a nest for them.

Very cool! I've lately seen a lot of ducks on the Gunpowder River in Joppa, MD, but I don't pay too much attention. I'm looking forward to going back now that I know how to interpret some of their behavior. Fascinating and informative! Great video!

My personal favourite is the incitement display, where the female tucks her head to the side repeatedly to get her mate to harass another duck
