6 great reasons to follow the "Ayahuasca diet" before ceremony

Everyone is advised to follow a very specific kind of diet for a week before drinking Ayahuasca. I've created this video for two primary reasons: Firstly, this is one of the most frequently asked questions I receive. Secondly, numerous people tend to repeat, fabricate, imagine or invent explanations that diverge significantly from my observations over the years.
We'll delve into the conventional explanations, highlighting why they lack coherence. Then, I'll share my perspective, grounded in what I've noticed from individuals who adhered to the prescribed diet and the noticeable differences for those who didn't.
While it's normal to do the diet simply because "that's what they do in the jungle," that isn't really enough of a reason. Rather than engaging in a debate of opinions, I present a catalog of tangible results derived from individuals who have undergone the diet.

Hey everyone. In the video I wanted to make emphasis on the psychological and spiritual aspects of it. I got so carried away, that forgot to mention the physiological reasons to do the diet. So, here is a summary. Raspberries, aged cheese, pork and the dark spots of overriped bananas and avocados (and other foods too) contain tyramine, a compound that elevates blood pressure. Tyramine is metabolized by an enzyme called monoaminoxidase (MAO). Ayahuasca inhibits this enzyme, thus preventing tyramine from being metabolized and keeping it longer in the bloodstream, creating higher blood pressure, headaches and the risks that come with high blood pressure for seniors, diabetics and other conditions. So, that's one reason to do the diet, specific to those foods. Another important thing to avoid is the antidepressants that inhibit the reuptake of serotonin, called SSRIs. Serotonin is also metabolized by MAO, so when Ayahuasca inhibits this enzyme, serotonin doesn't get metabolized creating an excess of it. If you already have an excess of it from the SSRIs, there ir risk of serotonin syndrome and death. I hope this clarifies the physiological aspects. This aspects are talked about in many places. My intention with this video was to talk about those things that I don't hear anywhere else.

So true about cannabis lessening the profound potential of an Aya journey. I’m excited to watch your future video about cannabis.

I can't wait to make it too. But I'll wait a little bit because, if it isn't done with a lot of care, it might earn me a lot of detractors :)

I really appreciate the topics that you're addressing in this work - I feel there are many obstacles botanical medicines (herbalism in general, entheogens specifically) have to overcome before being accepted as a primary modality for healing in the modern world - the demystification process being a primary and vital aspect of that sociocultural integration. The formal education of practitioners and facilitators is, in my opinion, also a crucial component for harm reduction and to best avoid errors of information that often perpetuate the reductionist and dismissive view that Western science has too often had in regard to many traditional practices. Instead the privilege of technological advancements can help illuminate the mechanisms that come into play making this work, beginning with dieta, so powerful. Even though the indigenous cultures didn't understand why it was effecatious via the same language models we use, they had the awareness and humility to understand certain behaviors and protocols optimized their experience. Once I understood the rudimentary biochemistry of certain plant teachers as well as the contraindications on a chemical level - the dieta made perfect sense as far as food parameters and restrictions. Not to mention using the opportunity to interrupt psychological and compulsive food behaviors and possibly evoke states of "emotional sobriety" and introspective inquisitive awareness. A concise example I found supportive for ceremony diet is as follows - Banisteriopsis caapi functions as an Monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI). Anyone taking an MAOI (a common prescribed compound in psychiatry) is told to avoid foods high in tyramine: eg. Aged Cheeses, Cured or Processed Meats, Pickled or Fermented Vegetables, Citrus and Tropical Fruits etc. Foods containing tyramine are contraindicated due to interactive risks and possible complications causing high blood pressure, nausea, headaches, rapid heart rate, etc - which can often be experienced in ceremony as an anxious/stressed state. We can minimize these discomforts, and not detract from the experience by preparing our bodies accordingly. {This is an oversimplified glance into a single facet within the complex and nuanced field that is interaction of foods with our bodies and its multiple processes, as well as the specific biochemistry of a niche and potentiated organismic state. Not to mention the exponentially amplified state of sensitized self awareness many of these plant medicines provide - minimized consumption of any kind allows one to arrive with an emptier cup 😉} I've always had the best results from light fasting and though I haven't had terrible experiences with a more casual diet pre plant medicine (though I have a relatively plant based culinary lifestyle already) - the quality and depth of experience is notably and substantially impacted by the level of adherence to proper preparatory practices 💖🪷💖

Yes. I realize I forgot to talk about the actual interactions between MAOIs and certain foods and medications. The video was tailored to the psychological and spiritual aspects, and by focusing too much on that I forgot to mention the physiology of it all. Glad you mentioned it!

Thank you so much for sharing. Makes a lot of sense. Never heard the ego explanation before… but I heard, aya will stop working on you and will be resentful if you don’t follow the diet. I found that explanation also pretty harsh, especially for those dealing with food addiction or eating disorder, which can send them into a ceremony full of guilt and shame. Your explanation is very logical and makes it very easy to understand. Thanks again for sharing your wisdom.

Thank you Hanja. That makes me cringe again. What you are saying is right. Those kinds of explanations do not support an environment of healing. Plus, they are not true. Aya can work without issues even if you don't follow the diet, though it is possible that you might not get the same exact results.

Thank you so much for making this video, the explanations were very helpful and much more grounded than much of what I’ve come across in the past. I once had a facilitator tell me that you have to cut all salt out of your diet because ayahuasca plants grow with water not salt water and it will be angry if it enters your body and finds there is too much salt 😂

I think there is truth to this sentiment, the issue is personifying Ayahuasca with the traumatized expression of humans ( like vengeance and rage). I think because Ayahuasca is a consciousness entering your own, that creating a physical environment most suitable to the consciousness of ayahuasca would allow the medicine to reach its highest potential.

Hiya! What about Salt and Chilli? Also, I had a Heroin addiction before (6 years clean this January) Thanks to my very first night of Aya. I was super ready as I had tried everything to get off it. I still had to have my last big smoke that day (around 11AM) or I would have not made the retreat. So even though it felt like nothing happened that night I was feeling free from the Heroin the next morning. I know that Mother Aya knew how desperate I was to get off it. So I took my ex at the time and a mutual friend who were both still on Heroin however they were still sick every day and they didn't stay clean long .. maybe a week. I truly believe the reason being that they weren't truly ready and they weren't doing it for themselves they were doing it for their family and my friend for his partner. So yes ... intention is huge ..You must be doing this for YOU....not anyone else. Thank you for your videos🙏✨💖

Thanks for sharing your vulnerable story and I'm glad that it has taken you out of your addiction. You are right, having the intentio of healing is absolutely necessary. Salt and chilli also important to avoid, maybe I forgot to mention it.

Great video and information! Thank you so much! Could i ask whether you know why i always crave meat after an Aya ceremony?
@IvanChocron
@IvanChocron 2 месяца назад
Thank you. Good question! It is very personal, and no one on the other side of the screen will tell you for sure. But it could be that Aya has put you more in touch with the unique needs of your body. That would be my first guess, but there are many other possibilities. I'd need to have a conversation with you to understand it better.

Quick question, out of curiosity: why are cigarettes sometimes excluded from these diets? I mean, they're stimulants, right? Thanks, great content, as always!
@IvanChocron
@IvanChocron 6 месяцев назад
Good question! The reasons why cigarettes are mostly accepted in ceremony is twofold: ceremonies use the Mapacho tobacco (Nicotiana Rustica or Aztec tobacco) and it is considered sacred by the natives, used as a medicine within and outside of ceremony. However, as I explained in the video, this isn't enough of a reason. The "western" explanation is that for people who smoke tobacco, it is practically impossible to remove it out of their diet for a week. The level of dependancy of tobacco is so high, that it would set almost everyone up for failure. If they fail on this, it might discourage them from doing the rest of the diet and it might play into lack of self-belief in their own healing work. Cigarettes won't interfere with the experience, so it ends up making more sense to allow it. However, for smokers if they can switch to chemical-free cigarettes, like organic self-rolled tobacco, it would be much better.
