I did two years of research and watched all your videos and got your book. After this I knew it would work. We have been here two years now and love it. As far as missing family ……we wish they wouldn’t visit so often! 😂

I've been a big fan of your channel pre-COVID. I've dreamed of moving to the Big Island almost a decade. Every time I come there I get an indescribable feeling of belonging, unlike the vibe I get from the other islands. You mentioned working in retirement to make ends meet. I did a quick job search today. There are a lot of full and part time jobs that will bridge any financial gaps I may have, provide an opportunity to meet locals and make friends. In fact, the last time we were on island, we noticed several locations offering "hiring bonuses" just like here on the mainland. Don't forget to remind retirees that have Fed, State, Loc government pensions the State does not tax this pension income. For me, that saves me about $2000 a month, compared to California tax. I also love the fact that materialism is not a thing there. The older I get the less "stuff" I want. Keep doing what you're doing!

I totally get your “indescribable feeling.” Same here every time I visit. I’ll be taking my 19th trip in October.

Nice. very accurate description. My wife and I have been here a little over 5 years the "vacation" phase in the beginning, missing friends, family and mainland amenities that you took for granted till you live on an island. You can go to any store, hardware, grocery to get a very common item only to find it completely out of stock sometimes island wide and sometimes for a long time. Locals are friendly but slow to make friends because so many people end up leaving. The longer you are here the easier it is to make friends, but it takes time, like everything here nothing happens fast. BTW love your videos. Even though we are Kamaaina, we like to watch your videos to discover new places on the Big Island. There is so much here it's incredible.

We stayed in this hotel in 2005, too! Loved it! My husband and I meant, and married, on Oahu when he was in the military, 48 years ago. After 30 years of marriage, jobs, and raising our family, we were finally able to celebrate our anniversary in the islands. We've been back many times since then and think we would love to live there again! I will tell you that island fever is definitely a thing, tho. When we were young, we couldn't wait to move back to the mainland. As much as we loved Hawaii, we felt isolated. Now that we are older, and retired, we think we could do it. But I really think it would be ideal to be 'snowbirds'. The best of both worlds. Love your channel!

Thank you. That was a lot of useful information. My husband and I always thought we would move there someday. I’m a widow now and still dream of moving there. I’m sure I would need to get a job, not only for the income, but as a way of meeting people.

I liked the Outrigger back when it was the Sheraton and the prices were less than half of what they are now. Was cheaper to go to Kauai this year than go there.

I so want to apply for a fuel delivery truck driver and move there. Would be fun driving around the island delivering fuel and then going to the beach after work every night.

Take time to learn the history of the place, the people (kanaka maoles) and their culture and try to resist being and acting like an entitled white person. Watching ‘White Lotus’ season 1. Aloha

Absolutely-we have mentioned this in many other videos but we will make it a point to include this loud and clear in any moving forward as its so important

@@365Hawaii I’m a mixed hapa ha’ole person. My dad is first cousin’s to Don Ho, Hawaii’s legendary musician. There comes a point where we try to change what is already made perfect. It breaks my heart that climate change is going to significantly impact all the Hawaiian Islands but tourism and rampant development has created an almost unlivable unsustainable life for all kanakas. In every Hawaiian kanaka’s heart we know we were the chosen ones to steward our home, our culture and our customs. We persevere and will continue on. Lahaina strong 💪 🌴 🌺 🤙🏼

@@stevenmoylan166 The good news about Hawaii Island is the general plan is to keep 78% of the island undeveloped. That has certainly helped us weather these wildfires. We were out on the lava today near Spencer Beach and for all the burned out areas, there was NOT ONE house that was affected, as its all open land. We have a chance here on Big Island to do the right thing. They are working to build housing for people who actually work and give back to the island..and the kanaka need to be part of that equation. I worked with Habitat for Humanity to build homes for Hawaiians who had gotten their land through Hawaiian Homelands.

I wouldn't move there full time, just short term lease for a little sunshine.

Not once did you talk about getting to know a Kanaka Maoli family or their cultural traditions and practices. It was clear that you are only wanting to get to know other transplants like yourselves. and sell the dream. So basically you are creating an island of people like you and with your western American culture within an island environment that already has its own culture. This is so disappointing. Poho !!
@365Hawaii
@365Hawaii Год назад
Thanks for your comment. We didnt want to say “go out and make some Hawaiian friends, too” as that is simply wrong in how THAT can be construed, as well. We have created many other videos around cultural awareness, sensitivity, and education. The resources we provide consistently speak to the need to understand the culture, the history and the need to give back to the island and know we are guests here of a host culture.
