The coolest quarterback who ever played. No emotions win or lose. No change of expression. No complaining about being hit or punched, close lined, brought down by a "horse collar tackle" or or kneed in the ribs after being tackled(all illegal today). The toughest QB who ever played. Deadly under pressure. The comeback wins with seconds left to win a game that seemed totally lost. Most exciting drop back passer to watch with that herky-jerky untrammeled motion. The Father of the Modern Day Quarterback. The master of the two minute drill, calling all of his own plays. No wristband for this guy. He didn't need an offensive coordinator and didn't want one. There's been no one like Johnny Unitas, not Tom Brady, not Joe Montana, not Patrick Mahomes, not Peyton Manning; not anyone no one today is on his level.

Unitas had the mentality of a linebacker, he loved getting hit. Unitas did not care about stats, he only cared about winning. Unitas always played to win, he did not play to tie or play it safe. Unitas gambled and his teammates had ULTIMATE CONFIDENCE in him, he was a TRUE leader. Unitas called his own plays and his teammates went to war for him. Unitas never dove feet first or ran out of bounds. Unitas got hit hard and got right back up. Unitas made HOFers out of players that would not have been HOFers on other teams. This is what a REAL QB is supposed to be.

I grew up I’m Arkansas but The Colts were my favorite team. Johnny U. was pro football. You knew you were watching a legend every weekend. After Baltimore he went to the Chargers and they filled the stands with people just to watch him throw on the sidelines. He rarely played because he was old but he got a standing ovation every time he went on the field. I saw him when the Chargers came to Denver and he got standing ovations in Denver’s stadium too. He was the toughest quarterback to play the game ever and they say he could heave it 70 plus yards. Ali and Unitas were the two greatest in sports during the 60’s. Include Jim Brown and you had the top three.

we all know modern QBs are bigger and stronger and faster, but you have to judge by the era. When he retired he held the passing yardage record by MILES, 40,239 while 2nd place was 33,070. And back in the day QBs called the plays! That is a monumental change, you truly had to be a leader and know which matchup was best, know the down and distance and situation. As the great Raymond Berry said "his uncanny instinct for calling the right play at the right time, his icy composure under fire, his fierce competitiveness and his utter disregard for his own safety.''
@PewGoBoomLife
@PewGoBoomLife 6 лет назад
Its why I still call Otto Graham, Jonny Unitas and so on the greats! I think most modern QB's would have failed big time in a game of the same concept. Less protection (gear wise). All hits where okay and the list goes on.

Ron Fili maybe you would see the bad QBs from this era dominate in the past.. ever wonder why the most popular position.. the one that almost every kid wants to play growing up is the hardest one to find.. for some reason the nfl can't have 32 really good QBs.. maybe if some of the busts called their own plays they wouldn't be considered busts...but then again the game has really changed and sped up.. the athletes of this era are way more dominant..

I got to meet the man. My sister worked for Art Donovan at his Country Club north of Baltimore in the 60's. I was about 10 years old then. I am 68 now and I will never forget that day. He was not only the toughest quarterback in history (still!) but also one of the finest gentlemen you could ask to meet. Remember... he set all of those records in 12 game seasons and the rules were all against him. He called all his own plays. He regularly got hit like no quarterback today has ever been hit. He was, without any doubt, the best all around quarterback in history. No contest.

"The Babe Ruth of the NFL" is an apt statement. The NFL should've done more to honor this great American. I do not recall them doing much. Peyton Manning wanted to wear black cleats in honor of him but the No Fun League told him he would be fined 25K. Manning didn't want to cause a stir in what was intended an homage. So he declined. The league should've asked every team and every player to join-in and wear black cleats.
@wvu05
@wvu05 2 года назад
The irony is that it caused such a stir when Joe Namath wore white shoes. Then again, he did that in the AFL, and if he didn't, the No Fun League would probably still be making everyone wear black high-top cleats.

If Johnny U. played under the rules of today, he would have all the passing records. If Mr. Unitas had today's advantages in strength & conditioning, nutrition, rehabilitation, surgical procedures and opponent scouting/preparation, he would set records that would never get broken.
@josedopwell9645
@josedopwell9645 6 лет назад
Agreed. Plus many of today's QBs are being coached in a professional manner in college so a lot of them transition better to the NFL. In the past many had to learn in the school of hard knocks for a few years and some never recovered from horrendous early experiences, especially ones with bad teams. When I think of Johnny Unitas I automatically think LEGEND. The numbers were there for his time. He's the template from which every QB who exudes quiet confidence and grace under pressure is cut. There were great quarterbacks before him that were clutch as well and important in the evolution of the position (Luckman, Baugh, Layne, Graham, Van Brocklin). But Unitas was the right man at the right time. His career exploits intersected perfectly with the rising popularity of television. His Colts introduced fans to the excitement of professional football via a dramatic sudden death OT victory. Shortly after the Packers dynasty began and pro football's popularity mushroomed. Unitas and those late 50s Colts teams are the crucial link to what the NFL has become today. Greatness isn't just about numbers or the size and strength of players from one era to another. NFL history would have a huge hole in it without Johnny Unitas. It would be like trying to tell the history of rock and roll without Chuck Berry.

Ravens fan from Pennsylvania here. That being said the Colts relocation was the result of failed attempts to replace Memorial Stadium with a more appropriate stadium. I don't agree with Mr Irsay moving the Colts but it's time City Hall in Baltimore and Maryland government in Annapolis steps up and takes responsibility for their mistakes. The thing that activates me is that the Baltimore Colts and Indianapolis Colts are considered the same team. Obviously we all have an opinion of who the best quarterback is but a lot of times, especially dealing with the quarterback position in particular, it's truly a generational thing. Johnny Unitas is the reason for the 2 minute drill, won the most important game in NFL history prior to the New York Jets breakthrough for the AFL because at the time baseball was king in the US, then came boxing and football. Unitas is still a standard even today because of not only his passing but his leadership and play calling (which is why Peyton Manning is so revered because he called his own plays), which has been taken away from the modern QB. Later in his career he often clashed with a young coach named Don Shula because he was stubborn in his approach to the offense but later in his career he won a sloppy Super Bowl V against the Dallas Cowboys. When Unitas passed away, Peyton Manning paid tribute to him by wearing his famous black hi top sneakers and threw 4 TD'S that game and won.

If you want to know the power of Johnny Unitas like Claudes saying here, Johnny Unitas had been essentially relegated to a injury backup role to the NFL's MVP Morall in that Jets superbowl victory. He had been beaten up severely in his career at times for a guy with his body type so it was natural to break down. The coach however pulled the *MVP of the league out* and put Unitas in to create a spark. That's the type of confidence he inspired in people. He had his # retired by two teams, and when the Ravens brought a team back to Baltimore they added his name to their ring of honor.

There's a little more than Unitas being `relegated' to a backup role to Earl Morrell. Unitas missed the entire 1968 season save one game, due to injury and the Colts went 13-1, steamrolling the Browns in the NFC Championship. I may be mistaken, but I believe the only game the Colts lost prior to Super Bowl III was the only game Unitas played in the regular season, a 30-20 loss to the Browns. So with Unitas injured, they called on the journeyman Earl Morrell who as you said, became the league MVP in 1968. But in the Superbowl, turnovers and Namath's quick passes kept the Colts on their back foot all day, before Shula called on #19.. Interestingly enough, that same Earl Morrell stepped in for an injured Bob Griese in 1972, leading the Dolphins to 11 straight wins and a perfect 14-0 record.

The father of the position of Quarterback. And Unitas played in an era where he called all his own plays, defensive backs could mug WR's all the way down the field, O-Lineman couldn't extend their arms (it would be called as holding back then), and when Roughing the Passer was NEVER called. He's the best ever for my money. Had he played with today's watered down rules, he would have all the records without question. Oh and I'm a lifelong NY Giants fan by the way

Even more amazing when you read his biography. He was out of football playing in a semipro league when a teammate asked him to go with him to a Colts tryout camp. His dad told him not to go in fear that getting cut would look bad to other NFL teams.

American Football was still a running game when Unitas was drawing passing plays in the dirt while in the huddle. There were no playbooks with diagrams of researched plays and situational formations yet. Truly a man ahead of his time. Drew Brees has surpassed Johnny Unitas’s record for consecutive games with a touchdown pass. I believe that was the last of Unitas’s records to be surpassed. Still a legend in Baltimore.

@@zacharytaylor3178 If John was playing now with todays rules he would be back on top. He also spent lots of time on the disabled list and had surgery that was ancient in technique. He played less games with shorter seasons and more running attempts per game than now. His highest salary was 140 grand a year. He would be 50 million a year plus now. I defend him all the time because he was my childhood idol and he did nice things for my dad when he was dying of cancer.

There have been quite a few great quarterbacks over the decades and more great ones to come. I’m a big Cowboys fan but my 2 favorite QBs are Dandy Don Meredith and Johnny Unitas. Besides all the stats they had a visible but intangible quality that inspired others and set them apart.
@thean9ryrussian621
@thean9ryrussian621 7 лет назад
You know, I would say he's a little too high on the list, but then I remembered that he set the standard for QBs, and if it weren't for Unitas, Brady and Manning and Montana wouldn't have ever thought to play the way they do. Johnny U is The Quarterback, as mentioned in the video, and he is the reason we have players like manning and Brady, so I think personally that this is a very good placement

Is that a message for the camera at 2:26? Unitas was my favorite player growing up, and continues to be one of my all-time favorite quarterbacks. He got hammered pretty much every time he threw the ball. But watching the 60s game is like watching slow motion compared to the current game, especially at wide receiver.
