"You're on a bus and someone uses drugs" isn't even a self defense scenario, at least not yet, and about half of them immediately start punching. Sure, they know it is going to be a self defense scenario, and probably a violent self defense scenario, so in the context of the exercise being proactive makes sense. But in the context of the real world situation they are simulating it's madness and in many places very, very punishable by law.
@PauIdenino

@@Echiewel Nah if a junkey sits next to you with an injection needle, you're in danger. Getting stabbed with a needle like that could kill you, you don't know what drugs there is or how contaminated it is. Nobody chose to approach the woman first in the "abusive couple scenario" asking if she's alright before going to the man. I believe this option would defuse the situation better because you'll either get consent to help or get her to tell you to leave them alone which either way changes the situation differently then the contenders choices.

Exactly my thoughts, exacty what I did couple times irl.
@otterno.1128

I kind of disagree, in abusive relationships the woman will almost always say she's fine, either because she's had way worse done to her in the past, or because she fears the guy will beat her worse after for asking another man to step in... it's really just a bad situation no matter what.

I was also expecting someone (like Jesse) to try distracting the guy with something, to take his mind off the girl.
@TheGeehanlolShow

Yeah but the whole issue was that the guy was beating on the girl because he thought she was looking at another dude. If you ask the woman if she's alright the guy will just get up and say "bro you talkin' to my girl huh?" and then if you went at him she gets involved and you're back to the issue everyone else had.

I think sometimes talking or yelling at the attacker before getting physical can be good. If he is hurting her one should intervene if one can but also know that she might take his side and that complicates things because she should not be hit but neutralized or contained without injury. Which might be very difficult to do all at once. So one would most likely take her hits without retaliating . Thing is if he stops and they leave together, things would most certainly keep going that way. So... in the end in my opinion 1) intervene if you can to stop someone being harmed 2) if possible get footage, evidence of other witnesses or cameras and report the attacker, make it known online, etc. This applies to any crime, people forget or don't take into account that if there are no consequences the perpetrator or criminal will keep going in the future..

Straight kicks (side-front-push kicks, etc) are best for self-defense. They don't require as much space as roundhouse kicks (check 5:07), they create distance, and they leave you in a more stable position than any other kick.
@matthemming9105
@matthemming9105 День назад
@johnmaco okay, but if you're in a bus, against the wall, with one guy in front and one guy off to the side... this is when you use a side kick. Any technique is situational. Front kicks are great... if the attacker is in front of you. A punch to the head is great... if you know how to punch, and where to punch, and how not to break your own hand when doing so in a self defence situation, where you likely won't be wearing padded gloves...

The harasser could be shouted at "get the fuck off me" and the girl could have been shouted at with "sit your ass down, right now" Using your voice and tone is also a very viable and effective tool for self defense
@pacefactor
@pacefactor День назад
I really think referring to Natan as "UFC Fighter" really covers up the fact that he's a military veteran from a high-tension area. The military really stresses on stuff like "situational awareness" and "attention to detail", as well as split second decision making and thinking through persistent stress and exhaustion (all militaries focus on these by the way). These are also the same reasons I think Craig does so well - being a trucker and clearly the kind of guy who gets around - he's more or less been forced to also learn these traits. I'd also expect seasoned prison guards similar types to do rather well (as long as they aren't cocky/overly aggressive) and given other variables like weapons training, equipment, and increased size/strength you can make someone who's going to be incredibly effective in self defense scenarios. Adding on MMA or Judo on these people make them more effective, but lacking those core mental and cultural traits can make any of these situations extremely hard to come out on top. I really want to see them add a HEMA fighter and a fencer to one of these - see how much pressure-tested weapons training may or may not make a difference.

i think jesse and craig did the best in scenario 3, they were able to stay within the limits of their comfort without having to react violently which in every other case caused escalation. whilst i agree you shouldn't let people do this to you, i think its up to each person to be able to assess their level of comfort when dealing with a scenario like this and being able to react accordingly whilst keeping themselves safe, i think the scoring system for this was incorrect from a personal standpoint, granted each person is different and had this been real the reactions may have been very different, ultimately you want to avoid violent confrontation.
@ferndiesel
@ferndiesel День назад
Aye. Always have to think about how these things would be assessed from the point of law, too. The other guy has bruises on their face, maybe some swelling. You have a story about how they were sexually harassing you, but they could argue that while they were making a pass at you, they were not being aggressive and you simply attacked them for their sexuality. It might not play very well at all in court

The scoring doesn't seem to be that detailed for this one. Also, preventing physical confrontation is the best for me. As Fern said, unless you are forced to a physical confrontation, the narrative could be turned either way. Even if the situation is forced in that direction, you have to make sure that it would be evident that they're the aggressor with you not using excessive force.

This part made very clear a very important point. Don’t let someone switch seats next to you. If they are sitting down somewhere else there’s no reason to come next to you (if you don’t know them). Also as an extra, idk if they were force by scenario to sit at the window, but since self defence is mainly about not being there they should at least be allowed to pick the seat that’s on the exterior or stand up. Good lessons in retrospect.

I used to take the bus a lot, not anymore. I remember once some let's say mentally challenged person sat next to me. I'm just a quiet little girl. I tend to attract weirdoes a lot, they somehow always find me. As soon as he sat down he asked me really loud so all the bus could hear: Do you have a boyfriend?! Being aloof, extremely shy and ''well trained to always speak the truth'' 🙄, I immediately wanted to say 'No'. But the fear kicked in and my brain was on full speed, so I was contemplating what would be better or smarter answer, so I think I said 'Yes'. I don't remember exactly what he said, but he just became so upset and started ranting I just didn't know what to do. He wasn't physically intrusive, though he was waving with his hands a lot like a mad man, he was just so annoyingly loud and out of control. I just stared through the window and just sat there quietly and tried to stay calm. I basically froze. Strangely, the whole bus was also sooooo quiet. Luckily he did settle down and soon got up and got off the bus. Very unpleasant, but if I was more confident like most of these guys in USDC I would probably annoy him even more. I don't know how to fight, but even if I did he was twice my size and I was sitting next to window. Sitting few minutes quietly next to an unstable person might not be the most comfortable solution, but trying anything against someone who is physically much bigger and stronger and also mentally unstable is probably even worse. Right?

To be honest, something that this shown made very clear is that, the "PERSONALITY" of the fighter is way more important than the "Martial Art". Permissive personalities like the Jesse (Karate), Ranton (Shaolin), Jordan (BJJ) are very exposed and give too much space/time to the attacker Active personalities like Craig (that does not even fight), Jeff and Natan are more safe, because how they are able to be offensive in the situations Natan, Ranton and JOrdan really got better as the shown proceed because they realised that being too much permissive, introvert, good guy, was giving them too much trouble and zero results
@CanadianWolverine
@CanadianWolverine День назад
This is not a nuanced conclusion, as it leaves out how some of those “Active personalities” did in the courtroom scenario or the scenes where “Permissive personalities” quite significantly de-escalated

@@CanadianWolverine depends how they are active. Natan interrogated the other person and won!
@GeeNo_
@GeeNo_ 23 часа назад
@@CanadianWolverine Also worth mentioning that some of these scenarios are set up where the actors are literally following a directive where they WILL escalate and attack, rendering more passive/de-escalation focused tactics a moot point. That is fair as it can happen in real life but I do think it does give a bias towards more aggressive tactics. I don't mind since the point is to see martial artists in action, but I think the OP of this thread has a serious misunderstanding of things. I do think Ranton is a bit too jovial and passive though as he makes light of things which can incense rather than de-escalate.

Way better scripting and editing than what I see on Netflix reality shows. Notice how Natan, Craig, Jesse, and Ramsey in Season 1, are making perhaps the sanest choices in most of the scenarios because of them approaching it with a real life mindset, Ramsey being a bit too gentle for the circumstances of the scenarios. The rest of the guys mostly had a ready fighter mindset all the time, leaving you wondering if they really would have made such decisions in real life. Mike in Season 1 also did very well, though he may have gamified it a bit too much. Natan was fight ready as well, though I believe it comes off more because of his great confidence in his fighting skills, but doesn't go wild like Jeff...
