90-95gr Grendel feels almost recoilless to me as well, even from lightweight builds. 100-110gr is very low-recoil as well, very flat-shooting. Looks and sounds like a 6mm on-target but has .1 to .3 mils more drift, from about 500-900yds off the top of my head. 123gr hits the steel with more visible and audible authority, but has more drop and a little more recoil.
Now... You have got my " wanna wrench " button engaged to check out this 6 Max in the new shop on the CMM, and other tests... to prove it and use it! Your synopsis alone is priceless... and cuts my time down exponentially! Thank you once again. Respectfully, Seth
Two things I’d be interested in seeing. Why not add weights to the shorty build and compare against the longer builds for time. Next, load the same bullets in both 6 ARC & 6 MAX ( 90 grains and 103 grains) compare ballistics side by side.
great video - I sold all my 223 dies and brass when I saw what the 6ARC can do. I run a poverty pony with 20" CMMG barrel and a fixed Valdada 16x. I don't dial just hold from 100 to 1000. 105VLDs and Leverloution. I won't waste a SRP on any other round.
boosting the algo! really hoping this takes off. i feel like Hornady was lazy with 6ARC, and that 6MAX is a far better solution to getting as much energy and reliability as possible out of the AR-15 platform
Awesome video bro.. I've been waiting on 6MAX video for damn near a year now lol . Its awesome it was you to finally break the ice.. I've been running 16" 6ARC since 2020 . I really dont plan on switching but it's nice to see companies pushing the limits since 6MAX is using beefy 556 bolt.. I guess the aged ole question is which is better.. Slower Velocity but higher BCs or Faster Velocity with Lower BCs . I know with my 6ARC using g 106g TAP in getting roughly 2540 FPS with 0.580 G1 BC . I have 0 clue what 6MAX G1 BC is but I'd like to think it's under 0.490 G1 . Could be totally wrong . Now I see Hornady has 22ARC . It's a great time to be a shooter these days . I geek out on all that shit from TDP Carbines to latest and greatest whiz bang 3000 Cartridges.. Me and a buddy have been talking with dudes at Peacemaker National Training Center in Eastern Panhandle of WV ( Which is my home Range ) about doing more PRS Gas Gun Type Matches . They did 2 of them last year . For 2024 we are gonna try to get them to do 3 or 4 . We even offered to help them setup on the Frontier Range which goes out to 600Y . Last year I shot my 556n and wish I would of brought my 6ARC but oh well it was my first PRS Gas Gun Match . I definitely struggled but i did better than i thought i was going to do . Hopefully all is well bro and hope you had Happy Thanksgiving and have Merry Christmas
For this kind of bullets, you can pretty much disregard G1 measurements for ballistic coefficient, it isn't representative at all of how the projectile will behave mid-air. In terms of ballistic coefficient, I believe 90gr is top BC G7 with .206.
Im a 6arc guy. Anderson upper/lower. Proof ss 16", cmc trigger with strike hanguard & furniture, but the 6max seems to be the logical setup from the bolt perspective.
You never compared mag capacity between the two. Is the 6 Max capable of holding more rounds in the same size mag? I do understand that the mags are for different calibers but which round would be better for a load out? I.E. # of rounds & weight. The main reason the army switched from the 308. to the 5.56 was you could carry more rounds due to mag capacity and weight of the ammo. If you were picking the next caliber for the U.S Military which would you recommend? I myself am looking to build another firearm and am very interested. I know I would not go wrong with either but would rather the better off the two. Great video by the way! 👊
Thanks RBI. So the 6max has the same capacity as the 5.56 in the mags. The 20’s and 30’s are the same size but you do have to use 350 legend mags since the bullet is just a tad longer. As far as the weight of the ammo goes, it’s only slightly heavier than the 5.56 depending on what grain weight you choose to shoot. Being able to choose 55fr all the way you to 107gr gives you many options. Thanks for watching. 👍🏼
Not going to get rid of my 6 ARC for this round but it is nice being able to pick up parts that are currently out there and know that they'll work. Gave up trying to find a mag that would work for the 6 ARC so just waiting for someone to come out with a mag for it. Could be the difference in bullet weights but it sounded like the 6 ARC hit the steel harder. Oh and Gorilla ammo is coming out with 6 ARC ammo soon so excited to try out what they have to offer, no more relying Hornady for factory ammo. I do wonder how the 6 MAX handles being suppressed. My 6 ARC is gassy with a Surefire SPS 300. Not the correct can for that round but it's what I've got. Did make a change to the rifle but haven't taken it out since.
Hey Flea! I don’t expect everyone to go out and try to switch cartridges as I really love my Cobalt 6arc. However, it did take a little tuning when it was being developed initially with magazines and such. Especially when running suppressed vs non suppressed. I know the 6max is much less picky than the 6arc when it comes to that aspect. I appreciate you watching and commenting. 👍🏼
Try de-edging, blending, and polishing your feed ramps. Use a Rexus/SixFive Outfitters Ultrabolt. I just don't have reliability issues shooting all different types of 6.5 Grendel mags in Grendel since 2009.
I’m curious how the 22 ARC will be received. Also, 6 ARC seems a little more velocity. 108 eld-m’s are ~2750fps out of a 18” bbl. Edit: ~2600fps out of 18”.
I love the DMR match over 3 gun that 3rd gun just adds a bunch of extra variables when most of us care more about pistol and rifle. I have a different built for this vs 3gun it’s longer and heavier but I’m still using .223 I was going to do a 6arc upper but may do 6max now
I think this will be the year for DMR matches gaining popularity. Easy to setup, less ammo, no reset and it’s just a ton of fun! Thank you for watching and commenting and have a Merry Christmas! 🎁
Now everyone is looking at the 6BR-A, but I saw a video (can't remember who it was) that was shooting a 20 cal BR-A. If it's as good as He thought and it fits in an AR15? To many wildcat cartridges, they come and go fast. That's why if I bought a rifle it would have to be SAMMI spec. and have factory support. It's interesting watching you guys talk about this stuff but........... See you haven't been uploading weekly videos I hope you're doing well Ray!
Hey Brad, I appreciate the comment. Been getting ready for Shot Show and already in Vegas. Have a project in the works and it’s been taking me away from videos. Hope to get some good content out soon. 👍🏼
At a prior point in time one thought you had to expell all bowel gas to hit 1moa at 1000 yds. He makes it look easy. i hope the 6 max components become more available as I woul like to refit a 5.56.
Okay here’s the real question… if you were building the ultimate DMR rifle from the ground up knowing what you know now, would you build it in 6ARC or 6MAX?
Great question! Most of the DMR’s are won using 5.56. However, many of those matches are 500 and in. If it’s a match where you might see targets out to let’s say 8-9hundred then I would say the 6max. However, it is still very expensive at this exact moment . There is a lot of versatility with the round and that’s why I like it. Nothing wrong with the 6arc either and the ammo is readily available at most stores now. I know it doesn’t help much. Just my .02 👍🏼
Recoil isn’t just energy but speed/sharpness. Larger case head on the ARC vs the MAX at the same 55K psi means a sharper initial impulse even though the overall recoil energy should theoretically be the same.
Great video guys here’s my take on civilian developmental of weapons. It is what makes our military what it is today… or maybe I’m completely wrong which is a possibility.
It's a great idea and definitely makes more sense then 6 arc because it's just a standard 5.56 bolt but the same thing is going to happen to it just like what happened to 6 arc you won't be able to get brass and if so it will be priced through the roof
3:35 Doesn't the longer case mean you can't load ELD bullets into the MAX like you can for the ARC? Being able to load long, heavy bullets into a 2.26 OAL is the main draw of the 6 ARC cartridge
Hope to see you in December at the CH! I'm on Squad #1. Great work! What trigger do you run on your gas-guns? Thanks for the barrel length info on the 6mm Max too!
I really want to see data on 6 MAX in 14.5 - 18 inch barrels. A DMR or if you are spicy a "RECCE" sized gun that has always been my favorite size of ar 15.
Thoughts on standard collapsible stock like the Sopmod or similar Magpul versus something like the Magpul PRS, UBR or B5 Precision for these 18" 6mm gassers?
It seems like much attention is being given to the cartridge and the rifle weight with little or none paid to the tuning of the gas system as effects recoil and speed. This could be different, but i always think of SOLGW being focused on battlefield type reliability, so i wouldn't be surprised if it's a bit overgassed🤷♂️
Nice information about about rifles I would like to ask about the last video you Didi 3 months ago about Liwa straight pull rifles my question is do they make any calibres in. 375 458 and 416 mostly for big game hunting thanks
Advantages I have seen all fall under reliability. Comparing the obvious: 6arc 108g and 6max 103g eldx (at this time, those are most comparable for competition reasons.... soon to be 107smk on the max) the data is almost parallel. Out of my 16" arc AVG MV for 108g eldm factory is 2535 and 103g MAX is 2600. The max edges out the arc here.... on the faster lots I have had with 108g, the ARC edges out the max. It's all .1 mils out to 1200 in both elevation and wind deflection. What I have found is the max requires the same (or lack thereof) maintenance as a 556 when I have been clogging gas tubes every 500-1000rds on the arc, blowing extractors, and cracking bolt lugs. The case feeds more reliably, and of course runs on a .std bolt. It's got less recoil (all minimal to begin with). We have 30 rd STRAIGHT mags on the way. It's positioned itself as a no-brainer to me. Also, out of factory ammo, the MAX accuracy is far superior than the ARC.
@@maddawgmrWhat bolts, gas system length, and suppressor have you been using with 6mm ARC? I've been shooting 6.5 Grendel in pretty high volume across many different barrel and gas system lengths, to include 12" CLGS suppressed. I've never seen or heard of clogged gas tubes. I also have several friends that have been shooting Whitley's 6mm AR since the 2000s in Hi-Power or for varmint hunting. None have had clogged gas tubes. Two of them have broken bolts chasing above-max performance. I've only broken 5.56 bolts shooting 5.56 in high volume back when I was shooting 3-Gun a lot. Cracked at the cam pin hole.
I appreciate the clarification Mike. I didn’t want to name drop during the video but I know that you and Keith killed it at the championship with the 6max. I really can’t wait till the 30rounders drop. I know you guys were running those for evaluation. I appreciate you watching and commenting on the video.
He didn't get to adjust the cheek riser for the 6arc so why give him a do over with the 6MAX? You put a PRS Lite stock on one but like a b5 on the other. Just wondering, what is your relationship with SOLGW and the guy that made the 6MAX?
I went on a Thermal Hog Hunt a few months ago and met Mike from SOLGW as well as Brian the cartridge developer. I have never heard of the new cartridge and was intrigued. I did a video on it and here we are.
Ray, IMO. For the 6 MAX to gain traction, it needs SAAMI acceptance. That will allow factory ammo production. I shoot the 350 Legend in a home built LaRue AR with a 18" Mos-Tec 5R stainless barrel. It's my gas gun deer slayer. I want to build a 6 ARC gas gun. Today, Mos-Tec builds longer length barrels than what he did in 2019, when my 350 Legend barrel was made. I don't reload anything these days. SOLGW needs to start offering longer barrels for the 6 MAX than their 20" max length offering. I'd go to the 6 MAX with a 22 or 24" barrel, and Hornady manufactured 6 MAX ammunition. SAAMI 6 MAX is what's needed for me to come on board. I filled 20 different freezers with deer since 2019-23 with my 350 legend AR. Michigan is a straight wall caliber for deer in it's "limited firearm" zone. The 6 ARC or 6 MAX will be for other use.
I love Mike and the boys, and I believe this is a viable cartridge that I wouldn’t mind building something around. Saying all that my ARC’s aren’t going anywhere either. I’ve had great success shooting ARC especially hunting. Can you ARC be tuned anymore? Living here in the SouthEast (GA) I’ve restricted my port tremendously and use A5 on my ARC’s. Good vid from the video it does appear the 2 rounds are neck and neck honestly.
You could avoid the cost of the bolt and use the longer lower to load 5.56 or 6x45 out to 2.5x" coal . Even better , you could base it on .204 brass . 6-204 loaded long and operating at 60ksi .
With a 88 grain Berger you can get well over 2,900 fps and less recoil so I am not sure there is much to be gained with the 6max when I already have a Proof barreled 6 ARC
I have issues with balance of the gun. I have a 6ARC, and it is weighted to only have a future as a fence post. Furthermore, I like guns that have a CG near the trigger and are easy to point at a target. Weight over 18 pounds is best for accuracy, and it keeps the morons from stealing your gun! The biggest issue are the health changes after passing 55. If you don't know about trimers and muscle mass loss, you will have a rough time in your 50's.
@@XRING I ran into a 40 something woman that had no clue what happens after 50. I told her I was a body builder, and she told me that wasn't likely. It is crazy how fast the muscle turns to fat!
Not 100% true. You can shoot tactical division and be competitive. I MD the match he is talking about in the video and the goal is to NOT make people spend 4K.
I will stick with the 6mm ARC . Its shoots really accurate and its much much cheaper to shoot.,The cost of ammo on the 6 MAX is a BIG NO. I dont think that the 6 MAX will take like 6ARC , the 6.5 PRC or the 7PRC Did.
I just don’t think it will take off. Owning both Grendel’s and ARC’s they almost everything this will do. As for recoil 99% of people running around shooting competition they run a brake or suppressed
Remember.. EVERYONES build should be tailored to them and what they want for that rifle. a 20lb 5.56 is ridiculously dumb for anything except, exactly what that guy is doing... PRS matches, he has a tiny window that he has to hold it and use it for so the 20lbs might not be bad..... for a PRS build. Dont listen to him and build the same thing for hunting etc... build it for your own needs.
