Over the years I’ve had ten Toyota’s and one Ram. There is no comparison! A Toyota is a masterpiece of engineering. A Ram is little more than a “hobby truck”. No comparison.

The kaizen culture of Toyota is unbeatable and inspiring. I love my Ram, but it’s definitely not as reliable as Toyotas. I am first on the list at the biggest volume dealer in Utah for a 2023 sequoia and I am stoked.

@@gavinwalker5686 I'm 61 years old and had them all and Toyota makes good products but Ram is a work Truck and can tow big weights . I have been buying Rams sense 1998 and I've never had a major issue just small things.. I trade every 3 years but my friends don't, they put hundreds of miles on their Rams ...Most of us coal miners buy Ram because they hold up best in the west Virginia mountains . My one friend just traded his Ram with over 300k miles for a Ford and it's been in the shop most of the 6 months now .

I have a 19' tundra, ive been debating on trading for a 2500 cummins ram, i like my tundra but its my first toyota and i dont understand all the hype, it has creaks, rattles and quirks like any other truck, its obvious where they cut cost (no trans cooler, drivers grab handle, interior storage etc) it tows well but 7 hour trips are tiresome as it has to rev high to make power, not to mention horrendous gas mileage, we'll see
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 Год назад
@ncurc 97 I think the hype for the tundras is mostly in the lower train. I’ve known people to go 300k plus miles with zero power train issues, and I’ve driven plenty and the gearing is low so you can feel the torque and it feels powerful, but after owning this ram and then driving a tundra, that v8 feels very unimpressive haha. I think any v8 would. The Ram really is a nice truck. It’s had some issues, but I really enjoy it and would t mind having it for a very long time.

I wanted a cummins. The wife wanted the bench seat. Im fully expecting to keep my big horn til 300k miles
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 Год назад
I’d have chosen a bench seat and a Hemi over the Cummings with a consol as well. Luckily the one truck that I could find I my geographic area with a bench also had the Cummins.

I have an 04 ram run T6 synthetic shell also you didn't say but what gave you the better fuel economy with the cruise on or without it love the interior color waiting for delivery on my build 2023 2500 limited Mad that ram wouldn't give you the sport appearance hood without black interior love the Brown
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 Год назад
I definitely see better fuel economy with cruise control on. Probably close to a gallon or so improvement in the mpg, maybe more. And yes, I love this interior color, I’m also sorry for you the performance hood only comes with black, but that is a pretty cool hood 💪

Wait until you start having Government Required Diesel Emissions Problems that are on that truck and it's not If you will it's When! just crawl under it and look at the Exhaust on it and it will scare you and if you Delete it the Computer can shut you completely down to Limp Mode.
@gavinwalker5686

I'll tell you what there is such a fear about emissions, way more than necessary. My parents used to live in Iceland. They were on a glacier tour, the guide was telling them how glaciers are melting there and in Greenland, and they are finding frozen farm lands underneath them. What does that tell us about the earths natural temperature cycles? But it's a great way to grab control and implements taxes, fines, and restrictions all over the place.

You mentioning the alignment steering staying put after offroading. That’s the difference with straight axle (Ram) to IFS frontends that you’re used to in Toyota’s.

I have a PW MY 22 and I get 11 MPG driving in v8 only. I could not justify the added cost of a Diesel but that is just me and PW only come in 6.4. The 6.4 pulls 9,500 like nothing. If you running bigger tires and don’t regear you’ll hate life. Also you have to remember the PW comes with 4.10’s so that’s also why the crappy mileage. I was going to regear but I tow and don’t want it much higher so am only going to 35’s. Nice truck. Looks good in white
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 2 года назад
Thanks @John Smith I really like PWs. If there was one available when I was looking at this it would have been a tough decision. Those are sooo capable off road. I haven’t regeared yet, as it wasn’t much of an increase, but when I go to either 37s or 40s later I definitely will or I’ll just be a slug.

I feel the same way. Been driving Toyotas and very rarely have any issues. I took a 2500 Ram for a spin, nice interior smooth ride, but I feel like I"m sitting in a time bomb just waiting for it to fall apart and the dealer to tell me they can"t get parts for it! Anyway, best of luck.
@gavinwalker5686

@Michael Was the good news it that they do hold their value pretty good, so if we don’t keep these things long term we shouldn’t take too big a hit when we trade them back in for Toyotas 😂

I’m considering going up to a 2500 gas since my new boat is 8500+ ish lbs on the trailer. My 19 tundra is Awsome. With air bags and LT tires it pulls pretty nice. Plenty of power. The boat sits on a slip all summer in the water so I only have to trailer it a few times a year. That being said if I ever wanted to take it up north for a week with the family I would be over payload after all our gear etc. if I’m running to Home Depot I have no problem overloading the truck and driving 30 mph home but a 200 mile trip in to some hills/ wind I’d feel better with a 2500. Wel see this winter Maybe I’ll flip a coin. 😂. I like your ram by the way. 👍🏼.
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 2 года назад
@Bostonharborwater Tundras really do pull well for a half ton, geared for torque and the oversized ring gear helps a lot too, I can’t imagine how good it feels with air bags. I agree with you though, a long trip like that is a different story. Let me know what you decide to do, I’ll be curious which direction you go! Thanks for watching and commenting 👊

I’ve have/had 2 Toyota Tundra’s….. ‘14, ‘21 and 5 Dodge/Ram 2500 CTD….’96, ‘05, ‘09, ‘12, ‘18. All good trucks and no issues other than me messing with them power wise uogrades.
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 2 года назад
@James Miller I really think that the Tundras are the most reliable half tons and Rams are the most reliable HD trucks. Have you chipped your ‘18 Ram? Any issues chipping with the DEF systems?
@Mill72
@Mill72 2 года назад
Not on my ‘18. Really no need with the ‘13 and up with the DEF system. Less EGR used than the previous years (‘07.5-‘12). Less soot=less regens= mpg backup close to non emission trucks. Also you will gain little if any with deletes/programmer or add just a emission friendly programmer on. EPA also been shutting down distributors with aftermarket parts pertaining to diesels. Just drive it and enjoy even though you had some emission related issues.
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 2 года назад
@@Mill72 I appreciate the owners insight. New video just dropped about what the issue ended up being. Bad PCM was the root, not DEF system after all. The truck really is a pleasure to drive, and glad to hear the systems are being more reliable. It did have me worried a bit for long term ownership for a sec there.

@@gavinwalker5686 Unfornuatley all auto makers products are rolling computers. All it takes is power or electrical component to wreak havoc. Usually when your dash is lighting up like a X-Mas tree with muliple messages. Usually a bad battery, ground, or component. I think all newer vehicles of any given auto maker will not be reliable with all the electronics and emission devices.
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 2 года назад
I totally agree. In some ways, manufacturing tolerances have improved certain aspects of reliability, but the computer and electrical aspects definitely reduce reliability consistency.

Cool truck, did the tires effect your MPG?
@gavinwalker5686
@gavinwalker5686 2 года назад
I didn’t have the original tires on long enough to know the MPG since the engine also improves a bit after a few thousand miles, but I usually get between 15-17 as my tank average, if that helps. I’m sure it did effect it some. These are much thicker and heavier than the stock tires, even though they really aren’t that much bigger or wider.
@Mill72
@Mill72 2 года назад
Recalibrate the speedo. If going off the lie-o-meter on the dash. You’re getting better. Hand calculate for exact mpg.

So what size are the K02’s that you have on the truck now? How do you like the K02’s? I’m also looking at the Toyo Open Countey

I’ve had these 35” (295/65/r20) KO2s for on for a while, they were the first thing I changed when I bought it so I probably have 10k miles on them right now. I just changed the title of my video about them, I realized it made it seem like I was just putting them on. Thanks.

@@gavinwalker5686 Thank you for the reply. So with the 295/65/20 on stock rims, do they rub all at? Any trimming that needed to happen? I have a 2021 3500 Mega Cab HO and I want that size tire but I don’t want to level or rub. I have the factory air suspension so leveling is a bit tougher than normal.
@gavinwalker5686

They do rub a little on the front sway bar, mostly the right side. I just posted a thorough video about it actually. Go check it out. Someone commented that they had just put 285/65/r20 wild peaks on and don’t run at all. So you can check those out too.

@James Topeka if a power wagon had been on the lot when I was shopping I would have bought it. The MPGs are horrendous but the off road worthiness would have made up for it.
