I have a 21 Silverado RST, 3 L diesel I LOVE it! It’s smooth, it’s sweet, it’s comfortable, it gets great mileage . I’ve made two trips from Omaha Nebraska to North Carolina, hauling trailers. One with the 16 foot covered trailer, the other, wish an open car carrier, with a 2005 full-size Buick, LeSabre. Going to the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina, I did not even know that trailer was behind me. The tow/haul mode on this truck is incredible!!!

I've had the 22 a little over a month, and wow! Due to my father having dementia, I've had to make several trips from Maryland to Detroit Michigan! I never need to stop for fuel or DEF. I just had the first oil change and this truck continues to surprise me. You assessment is 100% on target, thank you for keeping me informed on things I didn't think of. Oh, and the one Month mileage is 6500.

It’s 2023 not 1973. We should not be having to add oil to our engines in between oil changes in my opinion. My daily is a 2015 Cummins and it basically uses no oil in between my 7500 mile services.

My 3.0 duramax has 98,600 miles. Went in last Friday, possible engine failure. Should know more tomorrow but it has burned oil at a consumption rate of about 1 quart every 5,000 miles since it hit the 30,000 mile mark. Would be happy to share what the diagnosis is when I find out. Genuinely loved this truck, but GM says they will put a new "reman" engine in it if needed. I have heard rumors about crankshaft and something to do with bolts "backing out". Could be the cause of the oil burn, idk

It scares me a little that some people are saying they have no oil burn and some claim to burn a quart or more over 5k mile oil change intervals. It's either designed to burn oil or it's not, right? I get different driving patterns, different usage, etc, but if I were to get one of these, my OCD would drive me nuts if I got one of the burners. Lol

I enjoyed your review. I have the 2022 GMC Sierra with SLT trim. Last year we did a 9400 mile road trip and averaged 28.6 mpg. The truck is super smooth and makes me feel very confident in all driving situations. I have had a few glitches, but nothing that is a show stopper. The oil issue you've spoken about hasn't been too bad on this, but it isn't the LZ0 like yours, I have the LM2. Hope you enjoy your trip.

I have a 2023 LTZ Z71 Duramax; I love it. Bought it new June 1st have just under 6k miles. Live in Florida; getting 31 and 32 mpg on trips. Range of over 700 miles. No issues with oil, but I did buy some on Amazon to have. I got an early oil change at around 5500 miles only because I had to take in for a tire pressure monitor issue. From what I can see so far; my DEF will only need tipped off when I change the oil; used a couple gallons. Love it for all the reasons you commented on!

I have 22 Trailboss and just finished a roundtrip drive from Oregon-Alabama, over 5k miles and burned basically no oil. I had to fill DEF tank up twice but this was driving 75-90 mph the entire trip. Also fighting strong winds through the Midwest. I now have 11k miles on it and still love it. I also have a complaint about the wireless phone charger bc mine rarely connects to my phone to charge. Rarely have the CarPlay issue also. I was more than pleased by averaging 26mpg during that road-trip driving the truck extremely hard. No issues towing enclosed trailer with 2 snowmobiles up and down a mountain either

Hey Tim, Nice 6 month review on your new truck. Here is a non paid or sponsored idea on your oil availability issue. I use Amsoil synthetic oil and it is delivered to my door within a couple of days ! Yes, they do carry 0-20 for your duramax. The oil is $13.39 qt. Or 10.19 if you sign up with a membership. I have used this oil since “79” after my neighbor ( engineer at Air research aka Garret) recommended it to me after they tested the oil. Amsoil was first developed for fighter jet engines. I’ve never had an engine failure oil related or otherwise. Stow your extra oil bottles in the rear seatback storage compartments! Lastly, try your seat heaters on low or medium to soften the seat cushion as well as your low Back muscles on your trip! Have a great safe road trip! Ron

I have a 2022 GMC AT4 3.0 Duramax. Purchased Sept. 2022 and have 8K miles on it. I have to say I am over the moon in love with the truck. I have owned I don't know how may 5.3 gas engine trucks and the 3.0 Duramax blows them out of the water. No question. For me, towing a bass boat and driving back and forth to work, the fuel mileage is outstanding. I live in WV and I consistently get 26-28 mpg back and forth to work. In warmer weather I have seen 30-31 mpg. Towing a full size bass boat from WV to TN the truck produced 22 mpg. No oil usage seen to this point. DEF added one time. Thus far, no complaints. Definitely would buy the truck again. If you do not need a big diesel....I dont think this truck will disappoint.

First I've heard of oil usage, though I don't really read/watch content on the matter. I've had mine for a little over 3 years and do my own oil changes. I put the used oil into the empty containers from the fresh and haven't noticed any oil consumption. I don't do any hauling and only put ~9K miles a year so maybe that has something to do with it? Nice, to the point, comprehensive short term review. I agree with you that DEF is a no issue but I guess people need something to pick at. With regards to oil consumption I’m also with you and still scratching my head. I’m no diesel expert but I have never had any vehicle that burned or used oil (not even a 1/2 quart) when mechanically sound. Having a service bulletin stating its normal just feels like a CYA for a bit of design or component selection issue. I wonder why my previous GM, Toyota vehicles never used oil even when towing yet this is normal for 3.0????

Where we live in Idaho diesel is at mid-grade gas prices. So really the only extra cost to running a diesel is the DEF. Especially when you get a 50% fuel mpg increase vs a half ton gas, you are actually saving money by running this diesel. As for oil changes I always do my own. So 1 to 2 extra quarters....not a big deal when you get all the other benefits of this engine. I've scanned the comments for this vid and numerous others on this truck and most people don't have as much oil consumption as you do Tim. Also seems most people seem to get even a little bit better mpg's. Great vid. I know people who have this truck and they say it would be the last vehicle of their's they would sell. Keep em coming.

Also the problem with the digital rear view mirror is you can’t see or tell if emergency vehicles are come up behind you sometimes. The refresh rate of the monitor is the same rate as their LED flashing lights. Sometimes you can’t tell the difference.

Wife bought a GMC Yukon with the Duramax in it. Love this engine and transmission combo. Milage is great!!! DEF is not a problem. Lucky for me i have several trucks , dumptruck and equipment that run it, so buying it in a 50+ gallon drum is cheap. Just recently learned that the oil is impossible to find other than through a dealer.

Correct me if I am wrong on this particular engine but I would think piston speeds will be lower and expansion higher (more tolerance) so you would expect to see higher rates of oil usage and longer break in periods vs gasoline engines.

Thanks for your videos on the 1500 3.0L Duramax. I have owned many 2500 LT and 3500 HC (dually) 6.6L Duramax since 2003 and most over 250K miles before trading. I am not pulling big trailers anymore and purchased a clean, used, well taken care of 2015 1500 LT, V-8 with 104k miles, to just drive around town and pull my enclosed motorcycle trailer. That was a mistake, broke cylinder 7 rocker in less than 18K miles after purchase. Fixed at a cost of $3575. Saw videos on don't buy 2014 or 15 with V-8, well too late. Then the transmission went out 8k miles later. More video's of the V-8 Transmission problems. Replaced at a cost of $5200 and started looking for another 2500 Duramax/Allision. Thought for just around town, I will go back to the big truck to avoid issues. Then while viewing RU-vid, I came across your videos and thought I got to have it. So I went to the Chevy dealer and purchased a NEW 2023 Silverado RST crew cab Duramax two weeks ago. I have 1,560 miles on it before writing this. 1. Thank you for your time and knowledge on this vehicle. 2. I have had no oil consumption issues. Still full. 3. So far 21.6 City and 25.8 Highway. But did get 31.6mpg on a 180 mile drive through the mountains (50-62mph) in New Mexico. 4. Def is at 1/3 tank and have not had to add yet. 5. In Texas @ 82mph in the 80 zones, 25mpg is what I got and the V-8 was 17mpg. Even towing my motorcycle trailer 170 miles to the track and back @ 75MPH and got 20.9 mpg. In the V-8 I would only get 8-9 mpg, that is if I could even reach that speed with a headwind, most of the time in the V-8 I would only reach 68-70mph almost floored. 6. 1500 Duramax / 10 speed - What a smooth truck to drive. 7. Seats were better in my 2019 High Country 3500. 8. The chrome shines in your face like you said (sometimes). The left chrome ledge behind steering wheel shines / reflects into the driver side mirror and distracts the mirror view(sometimes). 9. So quiet, people don't believe its a diesel. 10. Couple buddies of mine who own 2500 6.6L Duramax, saw it, drove it, and now are looking at this baby Duramax truck also. Keep up the great videos. For those looking, the LT and the RST are comparable level models. LT is classic w/ chrome and RST is all paint with black. Options will vary for each. Love the Center console with car style shifter.

I think the oil consumption is a class action lawsuit waiting to happen. All it will take is for people to get lazy and stop checking it. The big question is, where is the oil going? Is it on the cylinder walls getting past the rings? That is a fixable problem the engineers should address.

@radoliz2 13 hours ago Oil consumption is happening to those who do not observe the break in period correctly! With 0w-20 oils, fuel dilution of oil takes place rather rapidly. Every time you give it WOT during the first 2,000 miles your adding unburned fuel to the engine oil. If you let the oil level get below add and keep driving it. You ruin the break-in of the rings especially the oil rings. Then you have a oil user the rest of its life. Two quarts low is one quart to many. You should keep a eye on the oil level for the first 5,000 miles at every fill up. It is not caused by the manufacturers. It is caused by the owners, thinking it shouldn't use oil and never keeping a eye on the level. And not observing the break-in period of no full throttle, or holding steady speeds for long periods of time. READ THE MANUAL and practice what it says. Keep the oil topped up, and look for fuel dilution in the engine oil. Sometimes it might be best to get a oil change at 3,000 mile mark to be sure it is not diluted.

It's low quality oil. The AC Delco/Mobil oils are too thin for the engine. With the Amsoil DP020, people are only getting consumption of 1 qt per 6000 mi or less. Similar could be accomplished with Ravenol LDD 0w-20 which is also a bit thicker, or Liqui-Moly 6610, which while it doesn't meet Dexos D per se, it meets OPEL OV 040 1547 - A20 which is the European spec for the smaller 1.5 and 2.0 engines of the same design. Any oil meeting that spec will meet Dexos D and be superior in viscosity and shear stability. Liqui-Moly 6610 can be ordered at NAPA in 5L jugs. Don't know about the Ravenol yet. I use the Amsoil in 1.6 Cruze diesels after converting them to the LM2 timing chain tensioner. It ends up thicker than the original 5w-30 did after an oil change. And no more tensioner issues. There's a reason they changed the spec to the special 0w-20 on the 1.6 in Europe years after the last one came off the assembly line.

Good review. I wish I could say the same for the mpg in 22' Silverado. I think because you're doing a lot of roadtrips without towing, you're having a good experience. When you tow a lot or go around town a lot, it has to do an active regen on the DPF very frequently which kills the mileage. I'm averaging ~23mpg over 11,000 miles and at least half those miles are driving unladen 20 miles to work (one way). In certain specific scenarios, this thing is great on mileage. Combined use mpg leaves much to be desired. Honestly, if I had to do it all over again, I'd go with the 5.3 or 2.7.

So after looking into the oil situation, there are good options. The separation from Oils calling for Dexos D - they have an ACEA C5 approval (which can be found on the newer Mobil 1 Dexos D approved oil). The ACEA C5 standard is a European standard for oils approved in both gas Engines, and light duty diesel engines. Any Walmart location will have 0w-20 oils containing the ECEA C5 standards. They may not identify as Dexos D, but will match the same standards found in the approved Mobil 1 Dexos D. I’ve been using Castrol Edge “Unlock Maximum Performance”, and my truck has been running great. Definitely not wanting to start a debate. We spend good money on these vehicles, and I’d suggest for people to come towards their own conclusions. Just thought I’d share my experience, considering Dexos D is non existent in my area.

DEF consumption is usually pretty linear with fuel consumption. The only explanation for it using less DEF is that the EGR is running at a higher duty cycle to reduce NOx production. Soooo.... driving it very lightly or not towing. Could also be a function of cold outdoor temperatures (or not). That said... the DEF consumption on my 22' really is something I rarely think about. Couple of jugs from Walmart a few times a year.

Disappointed to hear your store didn't have any on hand. As for the platinum def vs blue def, its my understanding that platinum has a slightly different blend for longer shelf life. Have had many customers complain about def quality issues with the platinum def. We have never carried the platinum in store for that reason. I have personally ran napa brand blue def in all my trucks, tractors, and equipment for years with zero issues. Cheers!
