Grow your woodworking business with "smalls"! Ready for the latest trends??? Let's break down some more builds and I'll also show you step-by-step how to make a garden basket using only 1 fence picket!
Often, smaller items are looked over by new builders looking to make a name for themselves because they are looking for "that one build" that they can sell for a ton of money. They aren't considering the cost of the build and the time spent making it. Ultimately any business comes down to profit margins. I'll give you a few examples of how selling items that anyone can afford can generate crazy sales with minimal cost of goods sold!
Sometimes we overthink things when the most profitable items we are looking past. Let's change that.

Like you, my health forced me out of work for almost 8 months, and at 64, it's not easy to find jobs, so I'm only part-time. I've been piddling around with woodworking for many years, but in order to make ends, I've taken it a bit more seriously. I make a fair bit from free scrap wood I find. It's amazing how many places you can find scrap wood. Granted, I still buy wood for some projects, but when you can profit from free wood, it's a win.

I'm 58 and am now unemployed after almost 3 years at a nicely lucrative profession. Now I find myself 'unhirable' probably due to my age. @20sherilynn Luckily I've been handling most of my power tools for a long time, but I do understand what you mean. I was given a scroll saw from a fellow woodworking friend and have to admit it took me months to get up the nerve to play with it. I'm still not what I'd call proficient with it, but that's because I rarely have a need to use it so not enough practice. Lol I think the jigsaw took me more time than anything to get good at. It's really just one of those things that takes slowing down to learn, then you can speed up once master it. Lol The very best to you in your new quest!

This is a great wood project book ru-vid.comUgkxkPIWb22DigCqxmlXerCyUF4HCl6eSU2L . Most of the projects use the pallet simply as a source of reclaimed wood not as a recognizable pallet so even if you didn't have a pallet you could make these projects with any reclaimed (or even new) wood. The instructions are excellent. The style is charming and would work with lots of different decor. There are quite a number of projects that involve tiling of teh wood pieces which is a really cool idea and can produce beautiful pieces when working with aged wood.

Life hack for drawing a "perfect heart". Invest in a heart shaped box of chocolate for your significant other, once its empty put the cover on and you have a "perfect heart" to trace onto wood. Could even use the box once to make a stencil out of 1/4 ply or something to that effect. The heart shaped boxes come in all kinds of different sizes as well, so you could make multiple different sized designs.

" selling like hotcakes?" - simply a term for cornmeal pancakes, because cornmeal was cheap and easy to source even during the depression, and so it was something that could be made quickly, everybody bought them, and so a small profit could be made. They went fast, and they were cheaply produced. And, I will add, delicious!

Something I remember from grade school, if you fold a piece of paper in half the long way and draw half a heart then cut it out and unfold you will have a heart with perfectly matched sides. Any size, and it keeps that hand drawn look.

Origin: A hotcake / hot cake is, in fact, what we know today as a pancake! The phrase originated in the 17th century (with the word pancake first appearing in the 1400s) and referred to a cornmeal based pancake which were HOT items (hence the “hot” in the name), especially when made and handed out after church on Sundays. The belief is that they were considered “hot” because they would sell out faster than they were made. Love the garden basket! They are ridiculously priced in stores. Definitely gonna make myself one or two. Thanks Matthew!!

I’m not looking for ways to make money for myself, but I do support my local Woman’s Club, that supports lots of local, national, and international, organizations. I’ve been making up a number of your projects (love the bird condos) and donating them to be sold. Thanks to your plans they have raised about $1,000.00 in the past three months. Origin The phrase “selling like hotcakes” originated in 19th century America. A “hotcake” is a pancake. The hotcakes that were sold in the 19th century are quite different from the pancakes you may eat today, though - hotcakes were typically made with cornmeal. This early version of the pancake was a hit. Often sold at fairs and church events, workers had trouble keeping up with the high demand - and hotcakes sold out as quickly as they were made.

So the phrase "selling like hotcakes" is an early 19th century saying. Hotcakes were made with cornmeal, which is different than the pancakes of today, but that's essentially what they are. They were sooo popular at fairs and church events that the folks making them could barely keep up with the demand, hence the phrase. So..there ya go. Great video! Wish a had a shop to do all these ideas, maybe some day. Thanks!

I'm 53 y/o carpenter from AZ. My body is wearing out from working so much...lotta wear and tear. Recently my arch of my foot started hurting from carrying center blocks around....we been working on a lot of block work. I think it's time for early retirement. So I need something to do when that day comes. I been watching your channel and I got a lot of ideas for future projects so I'd sell this kind of stuff at swap meets. I'm not going to copy your ideas exactly but I can do it my way. 👍 Thanks for the videos....it gives me confidence after my retirement that I'd be making some stuff to make some side money. I'm gonna utilize my miter saw and brad nailer. With simple ideas 💡 I could build anything even dog houses, bird houses, planters or even microchete for flower pot holders 😁 I learned woodworking in high school so I have no excuses 😉

Matthew, A good source for the leather straps on the baskets is old men’s belts. Usually available at thrift stores for around $1. Cut them to any length, just stay away from the holes. These are also great for a rustic look on chests and boxes for hinges.

Man I may have to get ya to sell me some fence pickets , Down here in Florida Cedar fencing is a rare commodity. The most common of course is PT Pine , But SO SO much of it is Garbage. I've found fence boards that vary in thickness to the point that the width of the board may be 1/2" an then across the face it tapers to maybe 1/4" if your lucky . In addition I've found them So Wet it's ridiculous an if you give them a couple days to dry what was once a somewhat straight board now looks like a rollercoaster track along with being crooked as a dogs hind leg 😝.

I’m about to do a big purge. When I started my woodworking career I started with free wood. Lots of pallets and materials being thrown away on job sites. Plus people would give me stuff. I never knew when I’d find my next stash of wood so I never turned anything down. I’ve gotten to where I buy my lumber from a sawmill. But I can’t bring myself to throw out my lumber stash of scraps. I am low on space and trying to reclaim my shop. SO it’s time to purge! I would much rather make a bunch of scrap projects than send it to the burn pile. Gonna have to look through more of your videos as I remember there were several other projects you’ve showed. Thanks for sharing.

When people are gripping about this president or that political party and how they have NO MONEY.. I get to say stuff like, did you know that you can create a 50-100 dollar wood doodle from 1 fence picket that cost 4-6 bucks... and you DONT have any money?? They say naaahhhh.. to wit I insert.. MATTHEW PEECH, FOR THE WIN!!! You give me Awesome money making ideas, AND free wins??? Amazing!!

Ok, since Matt encourages us to share, I would like to hopefully prevent some of my fellow newbies from the feeling of DUH! I've had for the past hour or so. I figured out the issues I was having earlier. One, it helps a lot to ensure that you are using the correct drill size. 5/8 is not the same as 3/8 and will cause tear out. Two pocket hole screws are designed to stop when they hit a ledge (i.e., a counter sunk hole), and if you don't counter sink the holes deep enough, the screws won't go in far enough. Hope this helps some of you because I feel like an idiot. Come pay day, I'll be ordering the Kreg Quick Flip, I can tell you. Enjoying making these and have added a new touch that I will put on the brag board once it's finished. Thanks again for the help earlier Matt.

Just starting building this basket for an upcoming yard sale and a word of advice: DO NOT TRY TO COUNTERBORE A 3/8" HOLE IN CEDAR. I used both a countersink / counterbore bit and a 3/8" drill bit. Both completely destroyed the ends of the slats. Cedar is too soft to be drilled that close to the end. The best approach I've found is pre-drilling an 1/8" hole and using a #6 x 1" wood screw. It still tears out some of the end but not like the 3/8". If anyone has found a better way, please let us know! Nonetheless, Matt keep doing what youre doing! You've been a tremendous asset to us all!

SELL LIKE HOT CAKES - "Hot cakes cooked in bear grease or pork lard were popular from earliest times in American. First made of cornmeal, the griddle cakes or pancakes were of course best when served piping hot and were often sold at church benefits, fairs, and other functions. So popular were they that by the beginning of the 19th century 'to sell like hot cakes' was a familiar expression for anything that sold very quickly effortlessly, and in quantity." From Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997)

The phrase "Selling like Hot Cakes" originated in the 1800s when simple cornmeal versions were sold at church bake sales and snapped up by the congregation before they went cold.

Pan Cakes come from early Christianity. They were the unleavened bread from the Bible and eaten during Lent. They then became a popular food item. They were easy to make and quick to cook. They were often eaten on ranches and farms as a quick way to serve breakfast. With stage coach stops, they became a food item that was more associated with the west. With the advent of early diners, they were the main breakfast food sometimes prepared in advance. They became popular with the public for a fast breakfast. The saying comes from the cooks, as they were selling like hot cakes (or pancakes depending on were you were from.).

Have you made videos on How To Paint or Stain small projects. Old barn board look too. I think you would get a lot of hits on that. How to brush , roll, spray. On small projects you want to thin the paint. You could go into what colors are popular now. Thanks

I especially like that garden produce basket because when dealing with root stock vegetables, carrots, potatoes, beets, or even tomatoes from the vine, you really like any dirt to be able to fall away, so spaced slats are perfect. If using for other smaller garden goodies, like green beans, or snap peas you can simple lay a dish towel inside. Think I would upscale it with 1/4" mesh liner stapled on the inside of slats, so you can wash-off garden produce with a hose in the same basket you picked in. A very useful item that will sell.

The hexagon tray would be nice with a taller hexagon box in the center to hold cutlery. Condiments and spices can be put in the tray around it and used outside for cookouts.
@billsmithingell7902
@billsmithingell7902 Год назад
Or make the center box shorter to hold change. Keys, wallets, watches, etc can then be put in the tray around the outside. That would be a tray that can be left on a bedside table or entry hall table inside the house.
