You Sir, are the best. Thank you for giving us your ideas, and for keeping it simple. Other woodworking youtube people have instructions like "lay this sheet of Baltic Birch plywood into your CNC machine..." (thanks for nothing). I have made several of you items, and I will be making this planter tomorrow. Please keep them coming, it is greatly appreciated. Big fan of fence pickets, I made Elevated, raised garden beds 4'x4', with fence pickets, because of the cost of lumber. THANK YOU!

Here is a tip for Home Depot. Go in a search the scrap pile at the back and the fence pickets for ones that would not look good on a fence. Talk to the employee. I have bought relatively good pickets with one end messed up for 75 percent off.

I looked for an employee first and told them what I was doing. I took ALL the bad ones. Even if they were too messed up for me to use. Sorted them out onto a cart Let them look and mark They were happy to get rid of them. They did not have to sort them. Saved them work. Sanded them down and installed them horizontally on a wall to make it look like Ship Lap. If I had that to do over again, I would paint the wall the color of the stain before installation. Also would have bought a Harbor Freight planer to save the sanding.

That is an excellent idea! I tend to think its a bit over kill on the amount of hardware for a planter box. And in some cases, even brad nails could have sufficed. I would reduce your cost even more and could eliminate a lot of predrilling. Just a thought though for some of these smaller projects.

You can do a 4 spoke trellis with two cross pieces using only 1 cedar fence picket. Total cost is less than 5 bucks per cedar trellis. I've got a batch of them along with a couple of pine monsters sitting at a local nursery/garden center. We'll see if it takes off locally. I priced myself a bit low just to get a feel for my local market...it's not a big city, people don't spend stupid money on simple things quite as readily... If my trellises take off now that the weather is warming then I'll have to try these planter boxes.

I made one today from some 3 1/2" cedar fence pickets that I've had sitting around for a few years. My pickets were closer to 1/2" thick and way too soft for pocket holes, so I used glue & brad nails. I thought 1.25" seemed too narrow for the top trim so I used 2" strips. It turned out cute.

@ronj1602
@ronj1602 2 года назад
don't do the compound miters on the top trim. After you get the side framework assembled, and before you attach the side boards to the inside, run the top and bottom thru your table saw with the blade tilted to 7 degrees, that way you can build the top trim piece with only 45 degree miters. Just make sure you cut the bevels the right way so that the long part of the bevel is to the outside of the box on the top and inside on the bottom. Cutting the bottoms also make it sit nice and flat on the surface.

OMG I have used fence pickets in every single project I have done! I just find a building design that i think looks nice and literally make everything up from there. Framing to finish. I have spent a lot of time learning what typical construction standards are so that i have a good point to begin. In the last 2 years I have built 2 chicken coops, 2 dove aviaries, dog kennels, and a small pool house. I think my dad would be proud of his little girl. I only discovered my passion for carpentry around 5 years ago. Its very hard to practice a skill you want to improve when you can not afford the damn materials. So finding materials that are more affordable have been essential. I would love to figure out a way to become skilled enough to actually make money. Im very excited I found your channel. Thanks!

After building one of these from the plans from your website, I have a couple of suggestions. On board three flip the placement of parts c and e with part I. This way a person can set the table saw and cut all remaining pickets to 2 inches wide with the last piece being 1 1/2 inch wide. Let I and H at 1 1/2 inch wide instead of 1 1/4 inch wide. The 1/4 inch does not make much difference and will add a little more support as the base. This also allows you to not have to reset the table saw to run these pieces through a second time

While I love everything you did, too often the expense of time is rarely or never addressed in these types of videos. Yes the expense of wood, screws, glue, etc might be under $20, people need to know how long one of these will take. How much do you want to make per hour? $20 per hour? Well if it takes you 3 hours to buy, build, and sell a planter, that’s $60 in labor plus the $20 in materials. That means you will need to sell a planter box for at least $80 to hit that goal. Last thing you want to do is end up making $5 per hour because it takes you a day to build one. Make sure you factor your time into the money making calculation people.

Great design, loved the idea. For the video though, too much marketing at the beginning. For a $60 asking price with $6 material cost, one should not need more than a minute of marketing. Otherwise, it may give a false impression of the product quality. During construction, too many fasteners were used on the panels. Fence picket is not elite enough material to warrant three screws per piece. Now if it was nails, I would say yeah that's about right. If so many large head screws were used anyway, maybe using them outside would improve the outlook. Other than that, great video.

I'm not sure if it's just me but these plans are a little tough to follow. I cut top brace for A at the 11 5/8 with the miter. That makes the opening at the top 11 1/8" which makes the two 5.5 pieces not fill the gap. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? I did get a little confused in the plans calling stuff "a" and "b" when the cuts were actually another letter. Maybe label the stuff in the plans with the letter.from the cut list to make it easier.

Was my exact thought when he started putting the wall boards in. I don't know his personal reason but for wood projects that will have water I use screws for expansion and shrinking of the pieces. I've done constructing and remodels for 15 years with lots of old houses, things that are nailed loosen up much faster and easier than using screws. My experience and opinion
@KinseiSensei

IMHO, that much dirt will be heavy as shit, especially after watering. It needs the support if you’re going to actually use it as a planter.
@theoriginalmonstermaker
@theoriginalmonstermaker 2 года назад
Neither Brad nails or glue (even titebond 3) hold up to the weather very well. Especially if you'll be moving these around w weight in them (into shed for winter?) or anything like that. If I was making them for my house I may still use nails just for simplicity and speed, but that's bc I could easily repair them if smthn happened. But if you're giving them a gifts preventing falling apart in a couple seasons is prolly worth the extra 5 bucks. Also, the screws are much better w permitting wood movement in changing humidity of outdoors AND the wall board being screwed to all 4 perimeter boards also strengthens the panel. In fact, if you wanted to save screws you'd probably be better off only using 1 pocket screw on each side of top and bottom rail, then 5 regular 1in deck screws (2 top 2 bottom 1 side) in the wall boards to secure everything tgthr... at least that's what I did. ... if you really want to go cheapest possible, you can even use drywall screws in the wall boards (since there won't be much shear force against them). And even though pocket hole tutorial on RU-vid warns against regular screws in pocket holes, IF you gear down your drill and are VERY careful not to over drive and split wood, you can get away w deck screws there too. Therefore, CHEAPEST YET MODERATELY EFFECTIVE SCREW OPTION = 28 x 1 inch drywall screws (20 for wall boards and 8 for top trim) and 32 x 1 1/4 deck screws (4 x4 for each panel assembly, plus 16 for attachment of B to A [4 down each side]) *if purchasing in 500 screw containers, that likely works out to 2 or 3 dollars total. Not bad. ... to bad in my area the wood is almost $30 : /

Great build video! One thing I will add for those planning to make these, is the 1 1/4” deck screws for the side panels will be too long for the thickness of the material in my findings. Yah…. Screws poked out all OVER the legs of my initial build. I went directly off of the PDF - 1.5” screws are too long. 😡 I was pretty annoyed. I think setting the Kreg to 3/8” (vs. 1/2”) is better as well, so the (1”!!) screw head has more wood to grab & pull the joint together. I also glued the joints. First one came out marginally ok.

I will now go buy a right angle drill attachment for the next one (unless there is a better/alternate solution.) For other beginners, I will list my mistakes so you won't have to make the same ones. First, I cut the piece lengths before ripping so I ran out of wood and needed another board. Then I drilled the screws in a little too far so they came out the other side. Two other issues were just me learning to use my new pocket hole jig and also the fact that the safety guard on my table saw wouldn't let me set the fence to cut a piece smaller than 1 1/2 inches wide. This is a great project for a beginner! Thanks for the video and plans!!

I CANNOT SEEM TO FIND cedar fence pickets in my area ... Not at HD, not at Lowes, and when I search online at their sites, it says OUT OF STOCK ... Ugh. Does Matthew recommend pine?, ... Pressure treated? ....

HOWEVER… (continued from previous post) Please realize that I have many decades of experience. I don’t waste a lot of motion. I don’t have music in my shop. I do production work (one project was eighteen guitar necks in one batch. It surprised me at just how quickly I was able to make 18 necks). It will take a lot of experience to match my speed, BUT… Stick with it. Keep your thumb tucked-away. Don’t day dream (one shop owner said I would day-dream but so what? I had the production speed. One day he walked into the finish booth and caught us goofing-off. He turned-around and walked -off in frustration and yelling, “Goofing-off again! I can’t complain, they’re always done”). Make it fun or you will take a fun hobby and turn it into a hated drudgery.

Wow. At 6:45 thanks for tell us what the hell your doing. You’re just cutting and ripping the pickets without describing what you’re doing.

I have following you on the value of small, I have actually used some of your ideas and I also go to my local Marshalls to look and see what they are carrying. I think those planters would sell at my first craft show. Instead of using all those screws, could I just use exterior wood glue and brad nails? Thanks for the inspiration.
