No Wilier Filante SLR??? Probably one of the best looking bikes in the pro Peloton….. full internal cable routing, one piece handlebar/stem and super light
Surprised you did not mention the ribble and "that" handlebar. I love aero bikes I think they look better, the Giant I find odd as the front end looks aero rear end looks super lightweight climbers bike. I love the big seat tubes which covers the space between the rear wheel
I actually think the aero bikes that allow greater adjustment will give the best performance in all areas including aero dynamics. Being stuck with cockpits that don't allow you to get into a great position, for example will limit your aero gains. The Cervelo Soloist & Propel gor example give you the opportunity to fit something like the Aerocoach bars, while the S5 is limited to 38 bars if you can get hold of a pair.
I’ve owned the rim and disc brake versions of the giant propel, they both consistently were my fastest road bikes among which i owned and directly compared the Venge, dogma, tarmac. It is difficult to explain to the doubters just how fast the propel is.
9:01 "... if you want maximum aero, and don't mind how it looks ..." The Orbea designers are going to remember you whe they're writing out invitations to their next product launch.
I was an advocate for aero bikes. After some launches over the past two years, am more prone to an all rounder snappy bike. Canyon in particular was very disappointing with the seat post and handlebar challenges
You forgot the Felt AR! I have the previous rim brake model with Zipp 404's. Crazy fast< and very light for an aero bike. Surprisingly, climes extremely good as well.
Really hoping to build a Scott Foil next year as they don't build the spec I'm looking for. We'll see given how terrible Scott is with stock levels and wait times.
Propel is barely a aero bike. FYI, caution on Madone. I put money down, had a 54 delivered...cause thats what was advised, I need a 56 due to the seat mast. So if you like the madone, measure 4x then order or better yet find a demo and see if it can fit you.
The Propel would be nice if you could afford one and then find one 🤔 the prices are so ridiculous I don’t think I would buy one out of principle even if I had the money 🤦🏻♂️
@@thetinusnl8834 Polygon is one of those not-as-expensive brands out there, but I don't think they're structurally dangerous like some small-name Chinese brands (these are cheap, but at the cost of safety, one of my customers paid the price for going down this path, I can tell the tale if you want).
I noticed the propel are priced a lot higher in the USA and UK $2000 price difference in the Ultegra compared to the TCR. If you look at other regions, like Canada and Australia. It's about $100 or $200 price difference. In Japan they are the same price for Ultegra trim. Greed is all I can say
@@thetinusnl8834 the prices are so ridiculous people are just keeping what they have. Cycling companies need to reduce the prices down to a sensible one that people can afford and relate too or those new bikes will just sit in a warehouse somewhere.
@@leeharding8306 I’m keeping my 2020 propel adv 0 for this very reason. I’ve dropped it for a full rebuild just this week, still a fantastic bike and will wait another year for new propel to be available. Im just not interested in other brands.
IMO.. road bikes should be chosen based on 2 things.. how they look and how the riding experience is from take off to holding highest speed you can. All other factors weight, aerodynamics and even shifting don’t really make someone get on their bike and ride it. Fun factor outweighs everything else. The fun factor is what I listen for on the reviews. Sounds like he loved the Giant and the Trek for fun factor.
The new Propel Advanced 1 looks great and is more ore less affordable at about 5000€. But still weighs 8,5 kilo without pedals. That is not lightweight in my opinion.
I was surprised he left out the Factor. But, maybe because they haven't updated it in a while? But, Specialized doesn't make a dedicated aero bike anymore. RIP Venge
I think the aero frames are over-hyped. The cyclist comprises 80% of the wind resistance, the bike being only 20%. If you can afford the aero bike, go for it, but IMO, it won't make a lackluster cyclist a superstar!
@@marks4471 22 retired bikes on Strava, currently three active in the stable, I have more than an n+1 problem. I don’t care what Italian, German, US bikes you have ridden or owned, but get your hands on a propel, and go easily break all your segment times in Strava, then come check back with me.
@@marks4471 I still have my best PRs on my 2015 rim brake propel, but a disc brake version would definitely demonstrate its capability. I was literally in the trek store yesterday looking at a matte black madone with the canter levered seat post - it looks awesome 👏 price wise it’s around £6800 with 12-speed Ultegra di2, carbon wheelset included. Very tempted to try, but at the same time I’m hoping the ‘23 propel range will get to South Africa soon.
My local giant reseller is saying August ‘23, maybe, for propel stock to arrive. Apparently the Giant factory prioritised making other brands their frames before making their own since things opened up after covid and could take years to get back to normal.
I love the bike in the thumbnail. But my back is injured. Can I put an old school quill stem on it with some cruiser bars? Basically, love the street speed but don't wanna lean foward. What do y'all think?
Due to the cockpit's two-piece structure, the second-generation Orbea Orca Aero can accept any 31.8 mm handlebar, such as the Specialized S-Works Aerofly Hover, with a maximum rise of 25 mm.
Does anyone know when the Propel will be available to customers in the UK and Ireland? I am living in Ireland and I cannot find any source as to when this will even be available to buy.
NOT faster everywhere - up steeper hills (like the UK) - the ones with Strava segments on and the ones where you get dropped in a road race, the ~1kg weight penalty will make the bike slower! Does anyone ride at (different to max at) 50kph outside the pro ranks or outside a peloton? Unless you run 120+mm saddle/bar drop, narrow bars and average 20+mph, the comfort/weight/complexity/price compromises of the aero frame just aren't worth it. Serious, competitive fondo/tt only.
Most people overestimate the impact weight has. A full kg more weight means only 2watts more up a 5% gradient with 15kph (202.7W vs. 205W for 80/81kg system weight). That is something you might get back (even at that slow speed with very archievable power figure) at the climb itself, let alone flatter bits. In normal road riding, aero almost ever wins. Its different for very steep hill climb events of course, or if you only speak about that one strava uphill segment, not a whole ride.
If you think you have ridden the best bikes on the market, please try to get on a Sarto , I would love to hear your opinion but don't blame me when you sell all your other bikes after trying it 🤣
I cannot believe this guy still take bike brands aero marketing crap at face value after finding out that giant tcr with exposed cable is more aero than trek madone or canyon ultimate.
David Arthur is literally known and to be only taken at face value as an advertising channel much like GCN. He just announces things and provides no real in-depth analysis.
Always nice to hear about weights, but if you don't mention if that is with or without pedals, it's pretty useless. For comparison to the current bike of the video viewers.
Weights are always measured without pedals, it's fairly standard practice. I know it might not make much sense but it's so that the real weight of the bike isn't influenced by the huge variety of pedal weights on the market
@@davidarthur wheels make the biggest difference. Tires/inner tubes or tubulars make a difference. All personal choices. But it's good to see that there hasn't been much progress weight wise. My 8 year old carbon bike with Shimano 6800 weighs 7.1 kgs. My titanium bike from 2006 weighs 7.3 kgs. With a sigh of relief.... But I did notice that the weight penalty of disc brakes seems to be mitigated on some bikes.
You didn't even mention BMC who make lowered seat stay first.Every manufacturer lowered their seat stay as well . hehehe..All non BMC user will swallow dust behind if they won't make seat stay lower as well..
I own an Orbea Orca Aero and if I had to do it over, I would buy any other bike on this list. Orbea is an extraordinarily poor company to deal with. They refused to resolve the abysmal actions of their dealer, ignored my calls and letter asking for their help in resolving what should have been very simple issues. They finally called when Visa hit them with a chargeback on my behalf and then tried to mislead Visa. They never followed through on fixing my bike as they said they would. At least Visa stood by me. Bottom line... any bike other than Orbea!
@velomattis-cyclingstuff7267 nothing insurmountable. Rear derailleur malfunction, which I corrected through a firmware update. LBS told me I didn't know how to use the buttons on the shift lever and that I didn't really update the firmware. Refused to update the shifter firmware for me, again insisting that 12 speed was too new to update firmware and that it didn't need to be wired temporarily for the update as the Shimano app indicated. Shimano customer service confirmed firmware update fixed my rear derailleur malfunction and that the shifter update needed to be done and needed to be wired for the update to be performed. Also, the rear derailleur was not adjusted correctly, front derailleur same. Threw the chain off due to the high-end limit not being set correctly and scratched the finish off of the crank arm in a large swath. And rear brake not centered correctly. Like I said, nothing catastrophic. The LBS treated me like a moron and they were wrong every step of the way. That is not directly Orbea's fault. But I paid Orbea for the bike directly ordering online from them. To ignore me and then try and weasel out of the chargeback by claiming I violated the terms of service by not going to the dealer that refused to help me after contacting them by phone and by letter??? They also promised me they would replace the crank. Said the part was local just before Christmas and would send the part "post haste" to a shop near me where they would install it at their cost. Did not happen. I have never before made felt compelled to let everyone I can reach know how bad a company is, but this seems to require it. Valuable content like this video does not provide a review of the customer experience. Also, they told me that to them, an $8,000 bike is not that big a deal in the grand scheme of things. Well it is to me.
@@markbraverman8267 Wow... Hope you got everything sorted and are up and running with your bike. I have the new aero as well and have ridden it hard for almost a year now. Rides like a dream! But I've had some issues too and had the bike sent back to the factory for Orbea to fix the issues. They replaced the frame for me without hassle. But I agree, the way that they are working with the local dealers are shit. I bought the bike through their web and they could not deliver the bike to me... I had to rent a car and drive 450km to pick it up from some small dealer. When I got home and checked the bike I saw that the shop did not put it together correct. They even turned the head tube expander upside down and put the parts togheter in the wrong order... Seat post wedge was not fitting well at all and they just didn't fastened the Di2 battery in the seatpost. They just threw it down the seat tube. So if Orbea want's to do the "Canyon" thing they really have to step up the game.
@@davidarthur Yes, folks like me enjoy learning about and seeing different bikes. My focus is Italian road bikes. Examples are Ciöcc, Formigli, Tommasini, Bottecchia, et ali.
I have been wanting to get my dream build Orbea Orca Aero but it becoming one the hardest bikes to get! I live in the U.S. And trying to get an Orbea is like Asking Joe biden to open the oil wells which will never happen. So does anyone here know how to go about getting a 51cm Orbea Orca Aero M31ELTD PWR? I mean like the world is going to come to an end before I can get my hands on one. Also, it seems like Orbea must think that EVERY cyclist is over 6 foot 5 inches tall! All I find is 55 and up.
Market Question: Who has roads nearby that allows you to gain the benefits of aero? Seriously, I live in western USA one of the most asphalted per capita places in the world (made up metric) and I would have to ride/drive over an hour to find a road long enough and clear enough to enjoy an aero bike for a one hour ride duration.
I found the wording at the very end of the conclusion a bit woolly. Rambling way of saying there are small benefits from 15mph, no statement of the type of mathematical function with which benefits ramp up with speed (square, exponential?).... ....and then slipping in that 'after yada yada, it would definitely be the final step in realising your full potential'. If he means lots of other things are more important, why not come out and say it like that?
Just as you would not dream of shelling out on a stradivarius for your grade 2 level 6 year old daughter. You should stay away from these boutique bikes Arthur.
Your "personal" recommendations? It's the same bikes every time. No Cube Litening, Wilier Filante, Factor or Focus. Paid channel and not to be trusted, just another GCN
You really couldn't be further from the truth, this isn't a paid channel and this video wasn't paid for by the brands represented. Odd and amusing you think that just because I didn't include a few bikes you prefer? That's the great thing about personal opinions though... I'm sorry you think that way though but it's your loss
@@davidarthur Its based on several of your latest recommendation videos where you seemingly select from a few brands and leave out others. How many videos have you featured the new Propel now? 4?
The Propel is one of the most interesting new bikes launched that's why it's getting a lot of attention, not just here but across the cycling community. Just because I haven't included every single bike in my videos doesn't mean there's any sort of conspiracy going on
Buy a quality bike you like looking at cause for the money they cost you better want to hang it on a wall. The gains you get from top spec bikes only affect the pro athletes. So don't worry about.
The bike doesn't make the rider fast. The rider makes the bike fast. It's amusing to see the number of people who are out of shape but can afford to buy 6-10k carbon aero race bikes to ride around on. If you're out of shape riding around on one of those you just look like a jackass.
