It is common for track cars to destroy the dust boots on Brembo brakes 6 piston calipers. We'll show you how to replace the dust boots, pistons, and piston seals. Additionally, we do some brake upgrades for the race track on a Chevrolet 2019 Camaro ZL1 1LE. The Camaro ZL1 1LE in the video had a dragging front caliper and rebuilding the caliper and replacing all of the old hardware resolved the issue.
Full front brake rebuild and refresh on Brembo six piston calipers that are common on 6th Gen Camaro (ZL1 / ZL1 1LE), Cadillac CTS-V, Cadillac Blackwing, and Corvette. The same principals apply to the Camaro SS and SS 1LE.
The rebuild includes fresh everything: Girodisc rotors, Hawk DTC-60 pads, dust boots, seals, pistons, and bolting.
Upgrades: Titanium Shims from Girodisc, Cadillac CTS-V brake cooling ducts (deflectors)

November 2023 - A few additional comments: 1. Clean the calipers before you disassemble them. You can block off the brake line fitting with bolts like these www.fastenal.com/product/details/11114317 2. Inspect and clean the pad rotor slot in the caliper. I had hard deposits that may have been causing the pad to bind in the slot. 3. The powder coating is tough, but anything abrasive will scratch it. Use plastic brushes in a drain pan with a car wash bucket grit buster. Use brake cleaner and isopropyl alcohol. Plastic scrapers or picks can be used for really tough deposits.

To confirm, the Speed Bleeder SB1010S-SS fits the SS 1LE. Thx to Scott for ALL of his help! Could not have done this caliper rebuild without him. 👍

fantastic video! Just did the front calipers on my ZLE! budget 3 hours for this job (for just the fronts) between cleaning the calipers and the rebuild. 3 cans of brake cleaner is a must. Also two updates since this video was made. 1. its way easier to put the dust boots on the piston and then push the piston into the caliper. 2. there is an upgrade part available for the piston. 19207043 is the vented piston from the CCBs on the Z07 package vette. same size for ZLE and have holes at the top to help prevent heat transfer to the brake fluid. i got mine off amazon for 100 bucks less than rock auto had them. Keep this great content coming and #ENDALS

Glad it helped. We don't get many views on tech content, so it is great to hear that it helped out the Camaro community.

Good video. I wish I had it when I did my SS 1LE calipers a few years ago, my first time rebuilding any calipers. The GM service guide goes into great details on the process. I used GM vented pistons and high temp dust boots from Racing Brakes. I also did a simple pressure test with air after just to have some sort of test to make sure the seals didn't have a leak and the pistons would pop out part way. The vented pistons work so well I no longer need Ti shields and the high temp boots still look new.

Thanks! The OEM dust boots started coming apart after five track days. Next time I'll consider vented pistons and high temp dust boots.

Thanks, you learn something new every day. I also accidentally call a crush washer a lock washer some place in the video.

I've notice on my car it's all ways thinner at the top off the pad when they get worn out. Also take out the wheel Sensor out and clean grease off of it. My stability track light came on saying stability Track disable...while I was at Daytona, Yes!!! it's just grease from out of the sturt. Great video...Will track together soon ..

Any ideal what to use for a steering indicator on top of our steering wheels. Like a little white band on top ...12'o'clock position.just to see wheel angle..

I pick up my ZL1-1LE next week and already signed up for 3 JZilla events at different tracks. CMP is closest to me... looking FWD to tracking my car.

Several of the Racing for ALS drivers will be at CMP in a couple of weeks for a private event. Looking forward to see if the additional cooling helps. CMP is rough on brakes. I would recommend changing the brake fluid to Castrol SRF. The stock pads and rotors work perfectly fine.

@Racing for ALS Thanks! Girodisc sponsored me years ago when I ran the OneLap event and tracks like Daytona, CMP, VIR and Pitt Race were on the schedule. Their brake rotors and TiShims were key to our success! I look forward to meeting you and comparing notes on car prep. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EvWF2Jh9Nsw.html

Great video! Thanks for going through all of that! I will probably do this with the vented piston swap at the end of this season.

I would love to hear the results of the vented pistons. I'm hoping increased airflow, titanium shims, and running DTC-60 pads instead of DTC-70 pads will make the pistons, seals, and dust boots last longer.

I would say metal picks will work for a careful non-beginner. Some feedback from my side, I grabbed the RB vented stainless steel pistons and blue hi temp dust boots (and stainless lines but we all know those basically for show), did a rebuild on all 4 corners and they ran great on track. Stainless steel supposedly transfers 10% of the heat that aluminum does, vents help more on top of that, and as long as you don't contact the hi temp boots with fluid they don't melt, in case you are curious to try it next rebuild. I like what you did with the CTS-V parts for airflow, will try to look up the P/Ns to do that myself! Any feedback on the Girodiscs? I see a lot of micro-cracks but I love the idea of dropping 5-7lbs per corner if they still vent off the heat quick enough. Thinking to do Raybestos ST-43 on track and their hybrid ceramic/semi-metallic pad for the street.

I will swap the Griodisc for DBA in the next front rotor changeout. The DBA rings are compatible with the factory hats with new hardware. They allow you to run the full-size ZL1 front pad, whereas the Grirodisc makes you run a smaller SS 1LE pad size. The PN for the Blackwing ducts is in the description. Both the DBA and Girodisc rotor rings are 36mm thick and are replaced at 34mm. The factory rings start at 38mm thick, so you get twice the wear. I run the Hawk DTC-60 all the time. I don't want issues with chatter with different pad materials. My street driving is limited.

@RacingforALS got you. I really want the weight savings and don't mind a smaller pad if it still stops and cools well, but I'll check out the DBAs too, maybe I'll try both. Can't really beat the stock rotors, though, for the price. And for the pads, I drive on the street often and am hoping using the same brand will let me alternate pads without issues.

THANK YOU!!!!! GREAT GREAT GREAT! Why don't you have steel lines, I don't know, but my guy says they help a lot. Thanks Ordered those CTS ducts in 1 second!!!! thanks again!

Some aftermarket brake lines aren't DOT approved. I would stick with the factory brake lines and upgrade the brakes with the parts listed here when you need to replace them. You can do the pads, shims, and deflectors while retaining the factory rotors $$$.

@@RacingforALS Wow, that part about dot makes sense!!! I would have never though about that...Thanks Already ordered the cts deflectors, those shims/heat barrier are real smart. Thanks so much!

How hard was this on a scale from 1-10 compared to just a pad change?
@RacingforALS
@RacingforALS Год назад
It requires more tools than a typical pad change. You'll need a compressor, non-metallic picks, banjo clamp, etc. You'll also need to keep the work area clean when installing the seals and pistons. If a brake pad change is a 3 out of 10. This is a 6 out of 10.

I do about 12 trackdays a year. How often would you recommend doing this?
@RacingforALS
@RacingforALS Год назад
I was getting uneven pad wear and suspected that the passenger caliper was dragging. The dust boots were toasted. I plan on doing it every other year with similar track days unless I have a problem before that.
