I lived in Santa Fe in the nineties. I've lived in Portland for over twenty years. I really really really wish I were back there now. I want to move back. Portland used to be awesome. Now it's a major drag. The longer I am here, the more I realize I belong in the desert. Wish I'd never left. Ugh. This makes sense if you know about Portland, Oregon and what's happened here over the past few years- beginning before the pandemic and riots and houseless crisis, but especially since then.

All I've got to say about moving to New Mexico is that it's REALLY hard to adjust to life out here if you are from the east (and probably also Pacific Northwest). It turns out that your brain occasionally does need to see something green. That being said the sun sure does feel good and the people are very very nice. But there is absolutely no sense of urgency and that can also be a cause of alarm if you are from one of the coasts. Like, I've never been to a part of the U.S. that was this relaxed.

I go back east occasionally and I call tell you it’s difficult to see so MUCH GREEN! Drive on I-40 eastbound and you cannot see past the treeline on the sides of the road. So MUCH humidity. Ugh. I like earth tones. No sense of urgency as on the east coast. Everyone is in a hurry. Ugh.

It’s super different! We have clients who have moved here from Seattle (lived there all their lives) and they say they’re still a bit moldy from all the moisture! Santa Fe is different. It’s a different experience all together. It may not be something where you want to stay for the rest of your life, but if you spend 5 years here you’ll never forget it.

Santa Fe locals have told me that lack of healthcare for more "complicated" medical issues requires a trip to Denver; no, not Albuquerque or anywhere else in NM. I have first person experience with that since a friend of mine who lives in ABQ has been making regular trips to Denver to stay with me. She must visit and be treated by doctors in Denver for her medical issues since the treatment she requires is not available in her state. I'm sure more "mundane" medical needs can be met in Santa Fe or ABQ, but anyone moving to Santa Fe should investigate the availability of medical care in the area.
@Livinginsantafe
@Livinginsantafe 10 месяцев назад
This is a serious topic that needs to be researched thoroughly. Santa Fe hasn’t always had a great reputation for health care. St Vincent’s Hospital has made vast improvement over the years and there are competitors like Presbyterian that have moved to SF to give people options. Many of my clients have told me that they’ve found just about everything they need for basic, everyday healthcare in Santa Fe. But for major issues, planned surgeries, etc… they might travel to Abq or out of state to work with a specific doctor with the track record they’re looking for. Definitely agree with you, if you’re coming with health issues, make sure you have your doctors lined up.

Thanks for watching! Yes, Santa Fe is very much a lifestyle decision. And although wealthy people do flock here, they don’t show it off like some other cities. Santa Fe isn’t like Aspen Colorado, or even Los Angeles where Ferraris and Lambos are common vehicles on the road. People tend to be a bit more modest in showing off their wealth, living a simpler and more fulfilled life.

Very honest and spot on! Until the last few years, I used to travel twice a year to visit a client in Santa Fe across a great many years, and I have a list of 48 restaurants/food places, everything from El Chile Toreado to Fernando Olea’s Sazon (who is a gem, my tocayo!), which is many more favorite places to eat than any of my next four cities, Bangkok, Tokyo, Los Angeles and Santiago de Chile, even though these are way, way bigger. And you have different KINDS of bike trails (Oddly, LA has massive river bike trails, but 99.875% of Angelenos never, ever enjoy them). And I have to laugh when someone mentions crime; you want to see scary stats, look no further than LA’s Culver City and toney Santa Monica (where I lived for 17 years without a single property crime befalling me in Ocean Park) which just came out with silly high numbers. Santa Fe by comparison is a walk in the park. Wherever you go, of course, keep an eye open, and you’ll be just fine! I like ALL your videos. Keep it up!!! You are the best in SANTA FE! And Santa Fe has great people!
@Livinginsantafe
@Livinginsantafe 2 года назад
Thanks for the feedback. I agree with you 100%, it’s all about perspective. I joke around that when new restaurants open up in Santa Fe, if the chefs don’t bring their A game they’re not going to make it! For Santa Fe being less than 100,000 people, our food scene is a cut above the rest. Talking about safety, people who have lived in a big city most of their lives come to Santa Fe and can’t believe how laid back it is. Completely different vibe. Does that mean you are going sleep with your doors unlocked? Probably not. Not unless you have a big pit bull sleeping inside on your couch! But what you said is the truth, you just have to be wise, always watch your surroundings, try not to put yourself in bad situations and everything should be alright. You have to do this anywhere you go now. We appreciate your encouraging words, we are doing our best and having fun. Hope to run into you in Santa Fe someday!

Lived New Mexico for about 10 years and Santa Fe for part of that time. Santa Fe has gotten to expensive to rent or buy. If you come from California, Denver, New York etc. it may not seem expensive, but for the average family it is just too expensive even to rent an apartment. Getting overcrowded and the homeless people taking over the streets and store fronts. Trash and people waste is becoming a problem plus more crime. Loved the city back in the nineties. Love the weather except driving in the snow during the winter months, though the roads are maintained pretty well.

Inflation is and is causing everything in EVERY city to be more expensive. Theres nothing anyone can do about that. Name a place in America where everything is more affordable? I’ll wait… Homeless is becoming a problem. But again… what’s it looking like in every city around the country? No homeless elsewhere? Have you been to San Francisco lately? Yikes! All these negatives people like to comment on… it’s everywhere. It’s a national problem. Anywhere we go, we’re dealing with these important issues.

Does Santa Fe have nice parks.
@Livinginsantafe
@Livinginsantafe 2 года назад
Yes! Yes Santa Fe does have nice parks. Where are you coming from and what type of parks are you wanting to have? So the public parks in Santa Fe tend to be smaller, but they each have their purpose. We have some great dog parks, intended on providing terrain and trails to walk the puppies. We have recreational parks, with playgrounds and equipment for kids to play in. We have parks that are mostly open space, grassy areas to play sports in. We have parks with grills and covered areas for picnicking and grilling. But ultimately, the best parks we have are our national forests. We are surrounded by hundreds of thousands of acres to hike, bike and explore. So while we don’t have a Central Park like NY City, we have something for everybody and we have the great outdoors to be used as your backyard.

@Livinginsantafe
@Livinginsantafe 11 дней назад
Property tax is pretty average here. There are several states around the country that people flee from because our property taxes are so attractive from where they’re coming from. Health care is an issue. But our facilities are adequate. Most people, who have major surgeries planned for, do go out of town or out of state to handle. Public schools are towards the bottom. But we have several exceptional elementary schools and several middle to high school options for parents to navigate through. There’s a way through that. Not arguing with you, your comment is appreciated. But there’s a way around all these things if living in Santa Fe makes up for the negatives.

How easy is it to build a home just outside of Santa Fe?
@Livinginsantafe
@Livinginsantafe 10 месяцев назад
+ALLEN VANBLARCUM it’s a relatively straight forward process. But not without its challenges. Pulling permits to build a custom home on the outskirts (Santa Fe County) is a little bit easier of a process then pulling permits inside city limits in my experience. I’ve done projects in both. Challenges arise when building on a lot that has a strict hoa, or an architectural review committee. You almost have no choice but to hire a professional architect to not only plan your home, but to walk it through the approval process. It adds to the cost but it’s worth it. We also have challenges with securing a builder. Most of the prominent custom home builders are booked out. So interviewing and securing a build time is important. I’m hearing from clients that most homes won’t come out of the ground for at least a year, and longer wait times for the best builders. Costs are high, price per sqft is all over the board depending on what you’re looking to do, but on the high end of the market anywhere between $500 a sqft up to a 1,000 a sqft is what builders are charging for luxury finishes. I’ve heard of some people pulling builders out of Albuquerque to reduce their build cost and also get the home built faster. Lots of variables. Happy to have an in-depth conversation with you if it would be helpful. Give us a call anytime.
@albaystealth52

I'm a retired custom home builder. So I can build at cost. What are the trade bases like in that area? Are there lots available that less deed restrictions? What type of septics used there? Aerobic or leech field? Is water generally available on the lots? What are the costs for the building permits? Our timeline is making a move in two to three years but may buy the land early. What's your thoughts on that?@@Livinginsantafe
@Livinginsantafe
@Livinginsantafe 10 месяцев назад
@@albaystealth52 Building at costs is a HUGE advantage! AND, there are also opportunities to make a good amount of money if you decide to do more than one project. The demand is there, everything good that is built sells! Hiring good trades people in Santa Fe is challenging. The guys that know what they're doing are in high demand, and they demand higher than average pay. There are plenty of people that say they know what they're doing, but their work is going to be lackluster unless you're willing to micromanage / train. Lots are pretty straightforward, but we DO have to look at the title binder carefully to ensure there are no restrictive deed restrictions that would prohibit you from doing what you want. Seller is responsible for having a septic system that passes the New Mexico Environmental Department's guidelines. Every new build or resale are subject to the same guidelines. It's pretty straightforward, pretty sure it's leach lines and not aerobic. Water is mostly available either with a shared or private well (in the county) or some sort of community water systems with an allocation of water. Depending on how rural you go, you may need to budget in the cost of drilling a private well. Huge spread in prices depending on how deep you need to go, plan on spending anywhere from $10-$20K for a 300' - 1000'+ depth well. There are plenty of lots that have water available where you don't have to drill for water. Building permit costs all depends on the price of the home you want to build. For a $1M home, permits average around $7K. $2M+, expect to spend about $10K+. There are also some hidden fees developers like to throw at you, "affordable housing" contributions. If you buy in certain luxury areas, you might get hit with another $5K+/- to get a permit to contribute to the affordable housing pool. It all depends! The buildings are the same color, to blend in with the landscape, to protect the beautiful surroundings, to not create another NY city with Mike high sky scrapers drowning out the majestic mountain ranges. Color?? Stand outside on a hillside and watch one of our sunsets.

Not a fan of Santa Fe. The food is over-rated. You can get much, much better (and cheaper) Mexican food in L.A. The town is dirty, full of homeless and crime, and the weather is not great most of the year. The town shuts down after 8pm, and most restaurants are closed Sunday-Tuesday. Probably the most frustrating aspect of Santa Fe, and New Mexico in general is the "Manana" attitude. Nothing gets done especially with professional services. If you are old and looking for a place to "wind down" then I guess this is an ok place for that. For the young ambitious crowd, not so much....

Mexican food is not the same as New Mexican food - and even though you can get almost any kind of food in LA - you can not get authentic New Mexican food anywhere outside of New Mexico. Both CO and AZ try, but they don't quite cut it. You're not wrong about pretty much everything else you said.
@ulrichskaarsgard7848
@ulrichskaarsgard7848 Год назад
@@KevinElderFarts It is the same except adding red and/or green chilies. I never had an amazing "authentic" New Mexican meal in Santa Fe, even after trying all the places the locals recommended while living there for 2 years. It's all overpriced and underwhelming IMO.

@@ulrichskaarsgard7848 I can respect that. ABQ has better, more reasonably priced food, than Santa Fe does, but sounds like you just don't care for red chile or green chile.

This is the worst state to raise kids. Period. Worst schools in the nation drugs rampant entry level jobs dont meet the ridiculous cost of living. If you come to live in an rv or outside the populated areas cool. Otherwise don't come. It sucks.

I’m not going to disagree with you. Education is a challenge. But it’s also a challenge that can be navigated. Born and raised in Santa Fe, I did just fine. Been running my own business and raised my own kids here. I have two children in college, and two doing exceptionally well in high school. Where there’s a will there’s a way. Anyone who paints in generalities that your kids can’t be successful here, that’s just wrong. It might be easier someplace else though. Better odds of success. Whatever. Santa Fe is worth it.

I raised my daughter in Santa Fe and she went to a Montessori school for elementary school, but public school for middle school and high school. She was prepared for college and had no problems. Students can do well but as parents you have to keep an eye on the quality of education your child Is receiving. One thing I liked about Santa Fe schools was the diversity. She is still good friends with a Native girl she went to high school with.

+Wanda Wilkinson that’s awesome! I agree, students can do amazing. But we have to play more of a role, it’s not automatic. But is anything in life automatic? If it’s to be, it’s up to me. My wife and I tried to teach our kids to be their own advocates for their education, to make friends with their teachers. And when our educators have students that WANT to learn, that dynamic shifts and the students are in the drivers seat with teachers that advocate for them and cheer for them to go as far in life as they want to. I’m super grateful to all the teachers in the Santa Fe public school system that are pouring their hearts out on our children, despite that all the odds are stacked against them.

Santa Fe sucks. Too expensive, the people are weird, not very many branches on the local family trees, citizens are clueless when driving, at least one third of the population is "funny....." I can go on.

You lost me at "no problemo" in Spanish and Italian the word is "problema" still a masculine word, but with and "a" at the end. A true Santa Fean would know that
@Livinginsantafe
@Livinginsantafe 9 месяцев назад
“No Problemo” comes from the movie The Terminator where John Connor teaches Arnold Schwarzenegger some modern slang. We grew up in the 80’s and 90s where Hollywood one liners carried the day. It was funny and kinda cool in the movie 😎. And never in any of our videos did we claim to be Spanish professors. 🤣 But since you seem to be such an expert in Santa Fe linguistics where you can so easily pass judgment, you should also be aware that most “True Santa Fean’s” can no longer speak their native languages because it was forced out of them. Hispanos and Native Americans were disciplined for using their native tongues and forced to speak English ONLY. Multi generational New Mexicans actually have pretty painful stories to tell on how they were “Americanized”. Did you know that? I always find it interesting to see what people focus on. We’re not the guys for you, and that’s ok.
