6 Signs You’re Burnt Out, Not Lazy

There’s actually a lot of overlap between laziness and burnout that can make it difficult to differentiate between the two. Burnout is defined as “a negative state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive stress and an inability to cope with it.” To educate ourselves and better understand the nature of burnout, especially when we ourselves are at risk, here are a few tell-tale signs that what you’re experiencing right now isn’t actually laziness, but burnout.
Have you ever wonder about the differences between burnout and depression? Watch this video: • Burnout vs Depression:...

@@HAITANNIES Trust me man, your family love you man. They want you to be happy, but they might not have the knowledge to treat depression or burnout. They might not know how bad having depression and burnout feels like. I told about my condition to my father and even though I didn’t know what words to use to describe it, I just said what came at the moment, he kinda understood me. He took me to a doctor, but it didn’t helped me. But I’m thankful, he did what he can. I think you should talk about this to someone you trust and feel comfortable with the most. Maybe ur father, mother, sis, bro, cousin, uncle, or a friend, anyone. Don’t hold all to yourself. It might not cure and fix everything, but it’s just the right thing to do. Don’t give up. There are so many things in life that we didn’t get to experience, I wanna experience them all, I’m not gonna let me die before that. This video really spoke to me. Before my burnout I was extremely motivated. I had just started a new relationship with my current partner and it was going amazing. I was also fully recovered from my eating disorder and my depression and self harm tendencies were going away. I was meditating every morning, frequently journaling, making my bed everyday, eating well and doing things that made me happy. I was finally cleaning my room and taking care of myself and even my parents noticed the drastic change. All of a sudden I started feeling so tired and demotivated. I stopped meditating and journaling, my room started piling up with dirty dishes and my clothes are everywhere in my bedroom floor atm. Im not cooking for myself anymore and just let my body starve cause I’m too tired to get up and cook. I’m crying everyday for reasons I don’t even understand, and I just feel so annoyed and numb. My exams were going on at the time that I was really motivated and I think that led to me stressing a lot, so now I’m here. I really hope I can crawl myself out of this pit again like I did before. I hope I find the motivation to take care of myself again.

I definitely feel that. Sometimes when things get overwhelming and people around you just drain you out, you cannot keep up with the facade anymore and you finally give in and just stop caring. Then you began to lose sight of your work and your relationships/responsibilities.... Like all you really need right now is a getaway from everything or just a small vacation to relax for once.

I seem to fluctuate between the third, fourth and fifth stages weekly. I can go from feeling fine, a little lost but functional to so unmotivated my body refuses to move. I hate having such perpetual burnout but it seems I can’t stop the work I’m doing or else I’ll fall behind in my schoolwork and miss opportunities that help me for my ambitious career of choice. Honestly, burn out has never crossed my mind when I started my final year of degree. I always thought "Why are you so lazy and unmotivated?! You were never like this before!". I simply brushed it off and got irritated, it made me more mad when all the things I enjoyed before no longer give me a spark of happiness. My mood was all over the place and there are days I feel like crying but I physically can't. Taking breaks was sacrilegious; all I could think is the outcome. I just wish I listened to my body cues more, maybe if I did I won't feel like this. I hope everyone experiencing this gets better (as I hope I would too), I couldn't stress this more but please GET SOME REST AND DON'T FEEL GUILTY ABOUT IT. IT IS OKAY TO TAKE A BREAK. Take care.

I usually never comment on vids like this, but this honestly explains a lot about how I've felt, especially with my art. Through 2016 to early 2022 I was super motivated and passionate with drawing, and while I've had moments where I'll do a decent amount afterwards, there is a lot of space in between with me not even touching my sketchbook. I'm still dealing with the burnout so hopefully I'll get myself motivated to draw more consistently again

The "losing interest and motivation in things you used to love" hit me like a rock. This just makes me realize how fast you can get into this black hole. My 2 year relationship endet and I pushed my interests I loved so much to a limit where I just feel empty and don't feel like doing them no more. I work with one of my passions and I slowly gain my motivation back. It's a hard way and it also shows how easy it is to just burn out. Take care of yourself everyone. You're worth it, don't work yourself over your limits. ❤️

I always felt that i was being lazy and being burnt out didn't ring the bells. I always thought that this happened probably because I'm used to CHANGES. (Growing up we used to move a lot, this affected my social relationships with people, my personal development and ect. since i adapting these things when i was little.) Through those changes i was able to adapt more quickly to new things and just lose interest to the things i love. And today is one of those days. Thanks for hearing me out random internet person! It doesn’t matter if I’m burn out or being lazy when the outcome is the same : we failed the tasks. If it’s not a medical condition, it will just be an excuse in the eyes of others. No exception or care will be provided by others esp. school or workplace. It’s a cruel world and it also shows why mental health problems are so devastating. There are always blames on the victims.

I feel like the most tiring thing is the fact you feel *horrid* for laying around, for not always be working and running around for everyone’s praise and approval, even yours. You get upset with yourself, you resent yourself for being unable to get up and work, how tired you constantly feel despite how bad you feel the need to work. Sometimes it feels like there’s no worth to you if you don’t work hard and have get noticed for it, you existing wouldn’t be near enough for you, and you get sick of being burnt out, but that whole thought process is burning you out even further and you don’t know how to stop it. (Personally, another reason I’ve been stressing is because we’ll be starting physical school very soon, something that I’m personally not ready for, ive been finding myself just wasting away this month just stressing it instead of enjoying it, and I hate that I don’t have enough faith in myself to pull through school this year)
@MatearlFort
@MatearlFort 3 года назад
I know how that feels: you’re tired and a part of you wants to take a break. But that other part is so loud and is telling yourself to push through and to get things done. When you do take a break, you feel awful, almost like you don’t deserve this break because you’re not doing anything. If you think of taking a break as a necessary part of working in order to work at full capability, it may not feel as guilt-wrenching. What has worked for me is taking more and more breaks. The more you do something, the easier (or less anxious-filled) it gets. You got this~

This has now only randomly come up on my recomended but by listening to this I’ve only now realized that a couple months ago what I thought was me being dramatic was just me being burnt out. I’d often feel what you had perfectly described a feeling I could never put my finger on (depersonalization) I felt this very often and would never have an appetite. I was like this for a pretty long while and yes now I have gotten better it really does make me realize how I even pulled through…. I hope everyone takes the time to take care of themselves :))

I feel I'm in the de-personalisation zone again. Annoys me that im fully aware I am, but I don't want to leave it right now. Feeling melancholic, neither here nor there....is comforting for a short while. I've got to that point where I'm so stressed, upset, anxious, worried, determined, motivated, unsure, self criticising, devoid, miserable, positive, tired, irritable, ecstatic, hyper.........I'm just tired. I like the middle ground. Burn out finally gives me a moment of nothing. Brains suck.

You could ease yourself back into by trying some no-pressure drawing. A couple ways I do this are by using a buddha board to paint with water and it dries so fast without a trace and I know that so I can't hold pressure over the outcome. Another way is to draw with pen on cheap paper. You can't erase it to fix it, so let the mistakes happen. It's on bad paper (napkin, notebook, sticky note) so you're not going to do anything special with this drawing, so just play around with forms and techniques without pressure.

@@Awgieable Idk. I honestly don’t. For me, one morning I just woke up sick and tired of being sick and tired. That morning I went for a three hour walk. I walked until my legs hurt, and then walked back to my house. I’m still not sure how to get out of it, but I’ve been exercising 5 days a week. It gives me something to build upon. Sometimes I get suicidal thoughts and I have to yell inside my brain that I like being alive. But I don’t have the answers. I don’t know how other people cope, I just try to focus on the positive. I’m grateful to have roof over my head when so many people are homeless. I feel grateful to have food in my belly when so many people are starving. I feel grateful that I have downtime to relax, when so many people have to slave away just to keep the lights on. I feel grateful that my biggest problem is my mental health, not some life threatening situation that I can sit myself out of. Idk if that helps, but I feel like I’m slowly creating a better life for myself, one brick at a time.
@drone2936

@@Awgieable You literally just have to force yourself to do it, one step at a time. I know it may sound pathetic, but sometimes you need to count each tiny action as a success. I’ve gone two weeks without leaving my bed and not showering. At that point, just getting out of my sheets was a victory. Add those up. Maybe one day, just uncover your sheets. The next day, sit up straight on your bed. The next day, walk around your room for one minute. The next day, step outside your house and feel the air. It’s tiny steps in the eyes of other people, but you have to force yourself. Do it for yourself. You know that this isn’t a life you want to live, so make an effort to take a step towards the right path.

Just don't use this to justify your behaviour, it's pretty toxic doing so. A lot of people are both lazy and burnt out. You'll know that you're not lazy and it's actually burnout when you literally cannot even do the things that you enjoy doing or hanging out with your friends. Avoiding work yet binging a game all of the time is laziness and is probably caused partially by puberty with the hormones and mood swings.

I have a toxic father who'd I've been dealing with for four years. And since around October of 2020, he'd become more harder to deal with and I am drained emotionally, physically, and mental. I'd neglected self grooming myself, my hair's always messy and my face is dry and has acne. I would randomly have these episodes where it feels like my mind is malfunctioning and I would feel depressed and lonely since I don't really any friends that I talk to that aren't from discord. I use to be so passionate about my RU-vid channel, now I can't even work on a one minute video and as a result my channel has slowed died. It honestly hurts a lot since it's my dream becoming a RU-vidr and I feel like that's being taken away from me. What really sucks is that despite me and my mother having a close relationship, it's hard talking to her about how I'm feeling now because she doesn't understand me and she is sorta old school. (Back when mental health wasn't taken seriously) I'd just turn 17 but I really want a job and learn how to drive so that once I turn 18, I can get as far away as humanly possible from my father. I will be taking matters into my own hands and finding me a therapist and I don't care if my father gets mad at for not telling him.

I feel so lazy this last year or two and I am so hard on myself. After watching this video I fit everything that is described and deep down I knew it all along. I do not feel like myself anymore. I was a driven person with goals, worked out almost every day, got up at 530am and swam 1-2 miles. I was always a high achiever top of my classes in school. Have run business that others in the same industry never could make it. I currently run a family operation that my grandfather started. I am now 42 and in the last 4 years we have been wiped out by hurricanes, then dealt with covid lockdowns and losses, and now the inflation nightmare. I have gained 50lbs and my personal care has gone to shi*T. I struggle everyday to go to work or just get out of bed but, my work is suffering because, I do not have the energy to do my job properly and feel guilty for any personal time I manage to muster the energy to take. The main person my Aunt who always helped run the business with me passed away 2.5 years ago so it is all on my shoulders now with the 30+ employees who depend on me for their living. I am not in a position to stop but, if I do not do something I am going to break. I recently started with panic attacks that I never had in my life. I recognize all that was said in this video and that I need to get out of the hole I am in but, despite past trials and tribulations this time I seem unable to pull myself out.

I’ve joined cross country to motivate myself, but with my mental and physical state I can’t handle it. I already have really bad anxiety and stepped out of my comfort zone to join, but it’s more running which my body can’t handle. It’s cross country, so the activities that they do is much harder for me. It’s honestly too much, but I can’t quit because everyone is proud of me for joining. And really if I quit now I’ll just be seen as lazy, and that I quit without even trying. I know the coach and he really wanted me to join, and the senior that motivated me at the start will be leaving next year so I can’t just say that I’ll try again next year. I can’t handle all the pressure my mom and dad put on me. I can’t even tell them anything because I don’t trust them. I’m sorry for ranting about my problems, but I really have no one to talk too.

Your videos are so helpful. I recently mentioned to my husband that I feel so lazy/unmotivated. To which he replied that I'm clearly not lazy, I'm just dealing with stuff right now. He listed all the things I've done and like doing (hikes, gardening etc) and said that a lazy person doesn't do those things. I really needed to hear that. I've been so emotional/moody/anxious lately and can't seem to shake it. I feel defeated, I hated the idea of taking meds but have a doctors appointment booked. Also, I just realized of been experiencing depersonalization. Its frustrating when I feel like no matter how hard I try, i can't do something right, when I'm already pushing myself super hard. I definitely relate to that, and have been feeling burnt out lately too, like the universe picked me as a special plaything. Lost some close people recently, watching other close ones die, work a 12 hour shift at work and have to do mandatory overtime while trying to balance my first relationship and my own personal obligations, and it's all starting to stack up on me badly. It's important to try and take the time you have to decompress, as hard as that time can be to find, and to do something to help take your mind off things so that stress isn't a constant weight on your mind. As humans we are so good at taking a stressful situation and making it ten times worse just by letting our brains dream up even more negative thoughts and outcomes because we already feel so suffocated by negativity and it's hard to see a brighter path out. I'm trying to get out of my own head more, relax and not let anxiety and depression get to me, though it's hard sometimes when you have so many reasons to think the way you do. Just have to view your obstacles as challenges to overcome for the betterment of yourself and those you care for, so that your burdens are easier to carry. I hope life turns a kind eye to you, and things get easier for you. I'll be thinking of you and wish the best for you.

I've been in a foreign country for 8 years (more than half of life I lived there) and I'm not familiar with the education curriculum in my home country which got me into more depression since i joined school. I also recently became too introvert, I feel like a spectator, spectating life. and my parents think I'm hella lazy. Not forgetting to mention homeworks, there are too much homeworks in my new school, which gets me into more and more depression I've quit posting on my RU-vid channel because im so stressed out. Most of the time when I try to communicate normally to others, I'm most likely to screw up. This video was very helpful indeed to understand myself.

I struggled with my weight my entire life and my job stress compounded my emotional eating habits. I've gotten surgery and extensive therapy for my depression and anxiety medication and life is much easier to navigate, but there's still lots of work to be done until my goals are realized. Life isn't perfect and you'll never have 100% control over the things that make life suck. Small, easily achievable goals on a daily basis help set off a domino effect, combined with self care and self forgiveness. "Today, I'll make my bed. Tomorrow, I'll walk to the mailbox. You didn't do the dishes last night but that's fine. You're not any less of a person for it." Motivation doesn't just materialize out of thin air when you're depressed and you don't give a shit about anything anymore. Therapy works wonders if you let it, followed by surrounding yourself with people who love and appreciate you for the things you do. Anxiety is a bitch. It tricks you into thinking you're not doing enough to accomplish the goals you set for yourself. Pace yourself, life is extremely long and it's not a straight line towards success.
