I switched to a safety razor about two weeks ago base on the recommendation in one of your prior videos. It took a while to get use to it but now I’m happy I made the switch.

Great tips! My shaving routine and choice of products changes with the seasons. I can get by quite well with an alcohol based aftershave in the hot humid summer months; however, in the dry winter months a post shave balm is a necessity.

Good advice Ash. Being a bearded chap I don't shave often. Just under the chin about3 times a week. Before I had my beard I used to shave with a straight razor. Very good and close shave indeed. You must take your time though. I did take your advice and now use witch hazel. Keep up the good work. Cheers Ron

I have been using a DE razor for the last 46 years and my favourite razor is the Gillette slim adjustable

I don't know if this happened in the RAF but on the day after attestation in the RM our Drill Instructor spent an hour demonstrating how to properly shower & shave. You know the reason all servicemen had a three-piece razor was because that was the only blade the MOD would resupply if you were in the field on extended operations.

I typically do 3 pass shave, with the grain, across the grain and against on the last pass, though I don't seem to have a problem with irritation. I always use witchazel after my rinse works wonders! There are lot's of fantastic artisan soap makes in the world one of my favorites it Stirling Soap Co. Great video Sir!

Shaving every day can indeed be irksome. Which is one reason why (as soon as I was suitably over 40) I decided to grandfather-up and grow some grey facial hair! ;-P

I have followed some of Ash;s earlier advice and ditched the gloop in a can for Taylors shaving creme and using witch hazel which has really improved things. I am sticking with my Gillette Mach 5 at the moment thouth as I got about 20 cartridges at CostCo recently .. waste not ... :-)

Hi Ash, another great video. I have just bought the Gillette Double edge razor so looking forward to trying. Can I ask what watch are you wearing in this video ? All the best, and stay safe Sir ! Michael.

I use a GILLETTE most days myself, a great shave for a great price. I favour Gillette Nacet blades for a good sharp cut. I was wearing a Rolex Rootbeer GMT (review video coming sometime soon).

Great video, I enjoy shaving. I’ll do preshave oil first, then I use my badger shaving brush and my safety razor and lastly a nice balm. I like the ritual, it helps look forward the day. I’m thinking of trying an alum block. What do you think ? Any name brands you recommend. By the way, love the jacket and the handkerchief (I can’t remember the proper name) around your neck. Hope you have a great day.
@TheChapsGuide

I personally don’t use an alum block, I prefer to use witchazel as a splash after a shave. Works magnificently.

I only use one occasionally, usually when I feel a bit of irritation on the way, seems to head it off at the pass.

Hi Jim. I have seen some of your videos few times. Just to let you know I don't use alum except on a cut to stop bleeding which thankfully never happens with the Gillette. Alum is a natural aluminum salt and aluminum is said to cause breast cancer that's why it has been removed for deodorants. I go safe and don't use it.

Preparation, like you say, is the key - the longer your bristles are wet, the softer they get, the easier it is to shave, and less chance of cuts & nicks.
@andrewspar436
@andrewspar436 Год назад
Not sure. I do not do much "preparation", but my face-hair leaves visible nicks in razor-blades as well as my occasionally used cut-throat razor, but I do not experience any cuts. Everyone's skin seems different.

Excellent shaving advice. I too use a safety razor, but when I have the time I use a straight razor. For me, that requires 100% concentration. For after care, I use my wife’s No 7 face balm. I’m not sure if she knows yet. One day I’ll have to confess. I think she’ll be very disappointed.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
I've not tried the straight blade very often, but when I have a bit more time to enjoy my shaves it will be a thing to savour.

Ash, you said not to use after shave in place of a post shave balm. What about ones that have cooling properties? IE: Stetson Cooling Moisture, Aqua Velva or Skin Bracer, to name three. Is the same true for them?

They would be fine, I occasionally use Aqua Velma myself

If you are just starting out and don’t want to go in too heavy, try a Kung C Gillette DE razor. It’s a really good razor, quite mild on the skin and pleasingly cheap too.

Good video with useful tips. After your recommendation of Witchhazel I have begun using it and have gotten addicted to it. Great product! Do you know other similar products. Also agree on "go with the flow". Have tried to shave against the bristles, but the outcome is never good on my skin.
@TheChapsGuide
@TheChapsGuide 3 года назад
Witch hazel is a gamechanger if you suffer from skin issues with shaving. I avoid shaving against the grain entirely these days - the initial effect is amazingly smooth, until the irritation and rash begins in a few hours!

Pores? Hair follicles I would have thought. Pores are the opening to sebaceous glands not follicles.
