After seeing people ask me how I learn songs on some of my videos, I wanted to talk about the process I follow when learning a new song.
Do you use any techniques that I didn't talk about? Let me know!

Great stuff and thanx! Btw if you’re using a pc you can customise the speed on YT other than the set speeds available.👍🎸

Oh you're right, I totally missed that! I guess you can still use Audacity if you want to do some super specific speed, but seems like RU-vid would cover most cases for slowing a song down. Good to know, thanks :)

Just found this channel, and I think your covers are really neat, and all the things you said in this video are correct and helpful! I just have a question though, why is it so important to play the song perfectly note for note as in the original? I think that not copying everything, allowing room for your own preferred and convenient way to play (like different neck positions that you've mentioned) could actually be a good thing. Since, after all, it's you, who are doing a cover, and if I wanted to listen to something as close as possible to the original I might as well just listen to the original. Thus having your own viewpoint, your own take at it, would make it more diverse to the listener. Not really criticizing, just want ro hear your opinion on that. Overall the info is great, thank you!

That's a great point! I should have probably addressed this in the video, but the steps I talked about are for those people that want to actually learn the song as it was recorded (e.g., for educational reasons, to make a guitar cover, etc.). However I absolutely agree that doing things differently in a cover is a lot more interesting! Doing that is a lot more open-ended though and requires completely different skills (composition, creativity, etc.), and I just wanted to focus on the "learning the song" part in this video. Hope that answers your question, and thanks for the comment :)

Great video man. But I do have a question. You described how to learn a song by looking up the tabs etc. But lets say you're learning a faster song like Master of Puppets with its fast Downpicking. Whats the exact process you would use to get to the original speed and play it really relaxed when you are not there yet? Or how would you build your picking speed and stamina?

That’s a great question! The traditional way to approach that (and the way I do it now as well) is to just start at a tempo that’s comfortable and play it like that first, making sure you’re playing with proper technique and that you can play it 100% correctly. Then, increase to a tempo that’s slightly uncomfortable, get to a point where that tempo is comfortable, and then repeat until you get to the tempo of the original song. The tricky part is that this technique requires a lot of discipline since it can take a while 😛 I’ve definitely cheated and just played faster but this always leads to sloppier results. Sometimes that’s okay but if you want to sound super tight you’ve gotta take the time to make sure you nail everything down. The other tricky thing is that a song could just be a bit too difficult for your current skill level (e.g., it has super fast sweep picking or something). In that case you can still do the same approach above, but realizing why the song is difficult for you and potentially pairing that with some extra practice (e.g., for a specific technique) can be a good idea as well. This can take a while, but you will end up being a better guitarist after :) hope that answers your question!
