Adult vampire crabs are almost completely terrestrial; in nature they only return to water to reproduce. I highly recommend keeping them in a terrarium with a small water bowl, *not* a fish tank. I suppose you could still do that though if you had a large setup with plenty of dry land, but a water-filled tank with just a piece of driftwood sticking out won't cut it long term.

I do wish vampire crabs were more commonly kept, because they're the only crab that's super duper easy to breed in captivity (afaik), breeding in much the same way as shrimp and crayfish.

I keep pond snails to feed my pea puffers and loaches. I accidentally got 1 on a plant that turned into an infestation. Let’s just say they make great food for fish.

bamboo shrimp are the most wild looking things i’ve owned. they’ll bully curious fish out of the way, pick through gravel, and are really beautiful and varied from individual to individual. big, too. fun to put them with nano fish

I LOVE snails! They've become my wife's favorite animals in the hobby. I really wish people would stop treating them as pests. If you're aquarium is balanced and you're not over feeding, you should never have a "pest" snail population explosion. Even bladder snails are manageable. The hardest one I ever kept was a "mud snails", and I think that was because I was inexperienced in the hobby at that point. And if all else fails...get a pea puffer!

Definitely do lots of research with turtles. They require very specific care and are quite hands-on. Not as easy as it may seem. Expensive UVB bars that need to be replaced, large land areas, heating with a thermostat + thermometer, and a varied diet (often consisting of both live bugs and veggies)

I had a turtle way before I started fish keeping and I thought it was extremely easy IFFFF you can get the adequate space for them. When you have a 5” turtle in a 20 long it’s a nightmare. And with fish, I struggled keeping platties alive. *PLATTIES*

I bought a lovely planted lava rock couple of weeks ago and then noticed I had a cool baby snail appear in my community tank. Kinda felt awesome to get a free snail with my purchase and now he's one my favourite little guys in my tank.

I’m an avid frog keeper and there are so many more options than the (admittedly really cool) Pipidae that people don’t really think about. If you want to do a land area, then firebelly toads are awesome. If you want something more advanced and delicate, Budgetts frogs are really cool.

I love turtles, but I worked in a pet shop for almost 7 years. In that time a lot of species have gotten illegal, because people abandoned them in the wild (because they didn't realise how big they get !). They survived in the wild and multiplied and are now a pest for our local water wildlife. So I printed a full sized turtle o paper and put it next to the baby ones in the shop. I also told people, who still wanted to buy one, that it costs a lot. They need a big tank (not one in the shop was actually big enough) and they need the heater (as a baby) and the UV light. But then again, we didn't have the audiance that probably watches these videos. We had the audiance that also put goldfish in a bowl (which is now also illegal, thankfully). But it still happens unfortunatly. It's one of the reasons why I quit and started working in a totally different branch. But the love for aquariums and turtles never left!

We kept a feeder a goldfish. Decided to give her a tank mate. The store advised adding mystery snails to eat any extra food and algae. They make a great addition along with the live plants.

I had an aquarium not too long ago that just stood around, it was fairly small. So I got this idea to put something else in it that doesn't live in water. Every year early summer I plant sunflowers, lots of them, on the balcony. Every year they attract a certain kind of insect at night, have you guessed what? Earwigs. Most nights I would count around 15-20 or more earwigs climbing up the walls on the building(two floors) to reach my sunflowers. They were *specifically* after them. I have no idea how they even spot them from the ground, you'd see them climb the wall, crazy. Turns out they eat the flower part while munching on any smaller insects that may be around. Anyways long story short I started capturing them and putting them inside the tank. I had them in there for over a year and you learn so much about insects by "studying" them. I used to be quite scared of them but they're completely harmless, they hide in dark damp spots and the males appear to be quite territorial. They would often be fighting each other with the pinchers, one of them had such a weird crooked one so it couldn't pinch properly. After a year I let them all out. I have no idea how long they live to this day never really read up on them in that regard. It was just a "fun" little experiment.

We’ve had shrimps and frogs. We’ve currently got some snails in the pleco/Oscar tank. Snails always seem to arrive with lots of baby snails in tow. I wanna say they’re Apple snails but my other half may well correct me later. Ahem. Seasons greeting to you all

I saw one mystery snail who was zooming around the aquarium store. So much personality but seeing how energetic he was, I knew it wouldn't be fair to put him in my 5 gal. When I say zoom, I mean he was in probably a 20 gal and went from one side to the other in like less than 10 seconds. Wanted that dude so much lol.

I've kept no end of indigenous species in aquariums, that I've netted out of local brooks and ponds... I remember some wild pond snails that I had: the shells weren't particularly impressive - the usual sort of brown... covered in algae and bits... But the snails body had the most incredible gold spotting on it. And as it was quite large (a good inch or so in length) it was quite an impressive sight. All sorts of diving beetles, dragonfly lava, assorted nymphs... you name it... I kept it... and it was all free. And when you fancy the change you just took them all back... released them... and caught something different. I also had a tank with a crack in the base glass which was kept outside with a sand, rock and scrub base: within which I kept native lizards and snakes (well slow-worms actually).

I have been keeping a rescue softshell turtle with my Widow Tetra and Tiger barbs. I rescued it from a guy selling it on the live flesh market. It's really tiny and loves staying up top and resting on floating plants. I will release it once summers are back but it's a really cool addition to the tank for now.

One of the snails that I absolutely love is Bullastra snail. Grows bit bigger than pond snails but their shell is covered with fleshy things which makes them look interesting and distinct from normal common snails.

@@fanaticatheist from my experience (I am no expert 😅) they breed very slowly. Their eggs take about two months to hatch. So they rarely become a pest on their own. I use them to keep my trumpet population in check.

I have three large white Xenopus frogs in my 60 gal. tank. They get along well with the fish and are very interesting to watch swimming about and feeding. I would like to add a couple of newts if I could obtain them. My pet shop did have an axolotl but it was $50 and I didnt want to spend that much money for something that might go tits up.

I love my snail. He came from the river (by accident) and I've had him for over a year. Google says native Florida apple snails are only supposed to live about a year, so I keep expecting him to kick the bucket, but he's still going strong. I love to watch him eat an algae wafer.

Dwarf frogs are easily my favorite non fish aquarium inhabitant. They’re so goofy and personable. They can even do alright in some community fish. Granted they can easily get outcompeted by some more ravenous fish if you’re not careful, but you get some shyer species that are slower and you’ve got an interesting community tank. You can even do a betta with them if you have a peaceful betta.

for a year and a half now I've manage to build a 20 gal-35 gal. tank with a peninsula cooter i rescued a year ago and over the months grown well and with a tank full of fish like guppies, snails, red crabs, albino corydoras, a dwarf bovillan ram cichlid (it brought unrelated drama in becoming a solitary fish and not wanting company of the same species), single dwarf catfish, and recently a pair of American Flagfish with a bi weekly 20-30 ghost shrimp feeding, it may sound cramped but its really not, everyone lives pretty peacefully, sides the cooter trying to eat them but its been months and the guppies take the brunt since theyve been feeder forms for months and manage to breed their 3rd generation of fry, overall i say i keep a naturally made riverbed tank well

Have a Owacheta Map turtle for years. Change the water every other week, use a good canister filter, put some feeder fish in for an occasional snack, and everything goes fine. And don’t forget to clean the filter every 4 or 5 months.

I highly doubt you're aware of my appreciation but on the off chance you ever see my comments just know, you've directly been responsible for my knowledge and understanding of what works and what doesn't. If I'm unsure I search the internet and find what you have to say about certain products animals and how they're used before purchasing. You're the holy grail of fish keeping information and I will always support you and what you do. I love snails. I love guppies because they're easy and they're very colorful. I have had the dwarf frog. I've never had a crab. I have tried shrimp. I don't have luck with them. But I can definitely grow plenty of hydras, snails and algae. That is not a problem

I have pond snails (AKA bladder snails) , and mystery snails and I like to watch them ride the air stone bubbles to the surface, and then drop down and repeat it. Like an amusement ride for snails.

I *love* my nerite snails! They are so cool! They do parkour all the time and go surfing on things floating in the tank. I have a floating cookie cutter in there (as opposed to most people using airline tubing to make an open area - tho my red root floaters aren't really spreading atm), and they have many times gotten on it, which pulls it down almost to the bottom, and then they climb off onto something else nearby and it bobs back up to the top. I took video of my lady nerite climbing down an Amazon sword leaf that bent over so it looked like a slide, then it sprang back up as soon as she was off it and on the gravel floor. My guy snail purposefully climbed UNDER a rock that weighs a lot more than he does and started to push it around with his foot. It was leg day. They snail across the 10 gallon tank in less than five minutes. Turbo snails! :D

I didn't think I would enjoy a snail in my tank but I purchased a mystery snail for my Betta tank. To my surprise I found her (yes, I found out she was a girl snail thanks to u-tube) fascinating!!. I enjoyed watching her so much so yeah, give the snails a chance. She grew like crazy and gave me a lot of enjoyment. When she passed I was quite sad so I had to get another.

Shrimps are sold for more than 5$ each at local petstores here in Canada, it's stealing. Very few hobbyist selling their own.. I miss my once big colony, shrimps are so fun to look at.

I have my own snail tank! I've kept a few fish, mostly bettas, but I've almost always had snails in the tank. Loved Nerites but they are so picky, Bladders were amazing, now I currently have Mysteries and Ramshorns, the Rams just had babies too! I adore snails so much, terrestrial snails are awesome as well and I am thinking about trying them out too!

5:45 Kept Fiddlers in my moms aquarium as a kid and actually had a Fiddler that would jump/fall off of the plastic plants to grab and eat fancy guppies and swordtails.

I've always been worried for invasive species for snails. I've had to go so far as pasteurize my gravel/tank back when I had a cichlid community 55 gal. I had a overload of them. They came from nowhere. And they completely took over within a year! Always been scared too after.

i had a little crayfish once. not sure what kind it was, but it came in a shipment of feeder goldfish when i worked at a pet shop. it was the same size as a typical CPO but a grayish color. i was told to "dispose of it" but decided to just take it home. i put it in my 10gal and it ate some of my fish and ripped plants from the ground! after that i put it in its own 5 gallon tank. it was stocked with fake plants to hang out on and some driftwood. the crayfish lived several years, molted a few times, and was sassy as all get out. would lift its claws up to "threaten" me if it saw me outside the tank. so cute and full of personality. i would definitely recommend a little crayfish, they are endlessly entertaining.

I need to give Dwarf Frogs another go since only experience I had was my mother jumping the gun with an overstocked up 5 gallon tank and sick froggies that died very quickly :( But with Clawed Frogs, all four I have are still alive, including the two that were in very poor condition at the pet store I bought and have big tummies now rather than very skinny caved in tummies and very thin legs, how their legs look like how they should and they have normal tummies. I was really hoping to do the same for the dwarf frogs I mother bought...

My girlfriend has frogs, they seem to be highly territorial, they attack fish when they swim too close, a couple of fish had their fins bitten off, not sure if it was frogs but it looks like it. During feeding, they could also be aggressive and often snatched food from the mouths of smaller fish that were unable to eat the worm fast enough.

There is one TYPE of animals above turtles (in my opinion). Everything that we consider live food. Most of them are good cleaners. They eat algae, organic materia etc. (I don't know English names of it). California bloodworms in small tanks looks like some saltwater gobies, that have just head sticking out of the Sand. Daphnia can do some rally nice colonies. Scuds can be replacement for shrips. There is a lot of them. They all have one problem - size. We can't keep them with any fish that eats meat. Only algae eaters, or in well made bioactive aquariums, where they can breed, and be eaten but in good proportions, so the population can still grow. 2nd optipn are scabies? (Not sure about the name). The "rocks with filtartion". Very popular in saltwater bot not in the freshwater. We have some dwarf specis too (scabies crispata). Very good for river type aquariums with danios, stiphodons and scuds.

Speaking of pure-water amphibians like the african frogs and the pregnant-backed toad, ever looked at the Sirens? Either the Dwarf Sirens that are around 9ish Inches or the larger Greater Sirens that are around 27 Inches or more?

I have African dwarf frogs, four different species of shrimp (including bamboo shrimp), mystery snails, ramshorn snails, and pom pom crabs. I love em all, but the crabs are my favorite.

@The Fanatic Antitheist I've had 3 snails for a year now. I believe they have life span of aprox 18 months. Mine have never laid a clutch of eggs. Now "pest" snails breed like crazy..like the little bladder snails that sometimes sneak in on plants.

I was always made fearful by videos or other sources of information saying that allowing pond or bladder snails to stay in my tank would ruin it. These guys come "free" with plants and even fish, the eggs hitchhiking a ride on the stuff you buy at the store, especially plants. A while ago, I mentioned the "problem" to a very respectable LFS (the largest in NYS and perhaps the east coast - look it up). The owner said that actually, they are not the problem everyone thinks they are, and he was not bothered at all in having these snails in his aquariums. I did some additional research and found that these snails will not breed out of control in a well kept tank. In fact, this has been my experience over the last few years I have basically ignored them and allowed them in my tanks. They are excellent cleaners, will not harm your plants (they only eat the dead parts), and their numbers will reduce to almost zero if your tank is really clean.

My aquarium has a mossed out terrestrial area and whenever I'm at home and find a jumping spider I get so excited and take it to the tank and just release it on the Terrestrial area. Sometimes they will dig in and nest up because the moss attracts fruit flies which the jumping spiders eat.

Love nerite snails. They come in cool colors, eat the algae, and are fun to watch. Mlem mlem mlem! Quick shoutout to bladder snails too. Great way to start a tank, excellent cleaners, prolific breeders. Best used with live plants to control algae, and therefore population.

I have a blue lobster crayfish and because she was kept with other crayfish it turned out she was "pregnant" ( she started holding eggs like a week after i got her). So now i have a bunch of cute baby crays to try to sell. Crayfish are super fun to watch, they're surprisingly personable and love to dig and climb. The only downside is that they eat anything smaller than them and plants so you can't keep them with anything.

I kept a crayfish in my tank at some point. They’re cute when they’re little but they’ll get an appetite for your fish. Sometimes I would bring a new fish in the aquarium and when I would go back to check on it, I would find it being eaten alive by the crayfish. I would try rescuing it but it was already missing half its body. I learned to keep the crayfish separate

Look up Broken Rib Newts. I have some and they are awesome. They like cool water so I keep them with my Dojo loaches.

In Germany,there are expensive snails like red marbled/deviled Sulawesi snails that are 15€-40€ each because they are so rare!

I do like Helena snails. They're really useful if you have pest snails in your planted aquarium. They're pretty to look at and are pretty darn fast, they have to chase down other snails after all. I bought one for pest control once and now I always put them in my aquarium, just like Amano shrimp. I've also had axolotls and a fire bellied newt before. They're a little more work, but they're fun and pretty to look at.

Snails are my absolute favourite aquarium thing. I have apple snails and they were a gateway to fish keeping 16 years ago :) I had 2 - a boy and girl - which was educational to find out they did snex haha Iv since added Giant african land snails to my family because of them :) (and keep 3 apples with my goldfish)

My parents had a clam when I was young. It would bury itself in the gravel and show up somewhere else. It was like playing hide and seek. They had it for about 2 years before it died. I haven't seen one since.

I have Chinese mystery snails, and they’re great, they give live birth to one baby at a time that’s around the size of a small paw and and get to grow about the size of a quarter. Unlike usual mystery and apples snails I’ve had no issues with them with live plants. They make a great snail do an aquarium as they don’t multiply rapidly or get to a size where they do damage. They are invasive in some states and provinces in Canada. Also find it takes them a while to settle into a new aquarium sometimes, and tend do do best when not moved around much

I actually enjoyed having snails I use to have a couple I really enjoyed keeping ghost shrimp aswell cause I really liked seeing them eat since you could kinda see the process of food going through their system

My snail did the amazing - it went from the tiny ONE I bought to about 50 in the tank in only about 5 weeks! I don't know if it's a mystery snail or a pond snail though ( It's supposed to be a mystery snail).

Bamboo shrimp are great shrimp, a little pricy but great shrimp to own. I wouldn’t say they are a beginner shrimp though. They can require special feeding. But they are filter feeders so they’re great for water conditioning. They’re huge, and do not attack any living organisms in an aquarium, are very interesting to watch, and somewhat intelligent. I attempted to breed mine but they both passed away without breeding… their breeding conditions is definitely more towards the difficult side. They need brackish water to hatch, which means you might need to place the eggs in a brackish nursery, and hatch them separately. But over all, great shrimp to keep if you want to have something in your tank that people will definitely notice and ask about.

Funny enough, bamboo shrimp has been the easiest thing to keep alive in my aquarium and he is healthy as can be. For some reason everything else decides to die too soon 😕 maybe its just a coincidence but ive had him for a year now. Went through alottt of fish in that time lol

Fiddler Crabs need something like a paludarium set up with brackish water and enough above water sand for them to burrow. I'd rather keep them in a terrarium with very moist sand and some very deep water dishes for them to soak in instead of the set up Cory mentioned.

How about triops (tadpole shrimp)? I've seen some RU-vidrs who've gotten some wild mutations. But I'm not sure how they do in a community tank setting or with other aquarium animals. If you could also document your experiences with triops that would be a great bonus.

Batman Snails are an awesome nerite to pick up. A little hard to find so a bit expensive, but super cool - almost like limpets.
