I’ve been overland van camping since before it was the cool thing to do, 2005. I have a 1996 econoline E350 4WD. I always place myself in an area that is not exposed. I also place my vehicle in such a manner that will not strand me when it starts to rain. My vehicle is setup to camp in 110F to -40F. I used a sound mat backed with Mylar and closed cell foam. I have dual alternators, a 6.5kW inverter an onboard generator and solar. I have a fuel heater, 2 baseboard heaters and 1 forced air heater. A microwave/air fryer/oven, a coffee pot and a refrigerator with a freezer. I also keep coolers just for dry goods storage. I have a 2 burner propane stove and a 1 burner inverter cooktop. I have started bringing a 4qt instant pot since it makes short work of most cooking duties without the caution required for most other cooking methods. I have a portable AC that I use to condition my space. A dry bed is something that improves your quality of life by an immeasurable amount.

From a security standpoint, one habit I learned was to never park my vehicle in a spot where I couldn't quickly leave. In other words, I don't park myself into a corner that I can't drive (forward) out of. Isn't always possible but something to consider.

Yeah, very good. But there is so much know how to camping. Like, don't set up camp in a depression at the base of a hill or tree, in case it rains. If anyone watching or reading this didn't know these two basic things, find someone with experience to camp with and learn.

I was just looking in the woods around my house for a place to set up my tent (never camped never been an outdoors guy, just starting) and I noticed all the dead trees, trees that are leaning on other trees, etc. And I thought huh, you can't just set up anywhere can you. Idk why I went out looking for a spot when I've never learned the first thing about where and what to do. Ik how to make a fire and shoot a gun and I thought that was enough 🤦‍♂️ Definitely a good idea to watch out for that tree.

LMAO!!! Yep….I remember that. It was a badge of honor to run a 75-80lb pack for a three day trip. I have found, especially with modern materials, that a 30-40 lb pack will do me for a week easy. I’ve slept on the ground in a blanket in the snow, up against a tree (in a tree one time), tent, pad, cot, ambulance seat, gurney, truck bed, trailer, etc, etc. hell I fell asleep on an ice cold rock one time (it was hot, and the rock felt great 😂), but at 52, I love my sleep, and I love me my bed. Whether it’s in my camper, trailer, home or station. So junior…you go right on ahead and do your stuff. I’ve already done mine in and during training, and just having fun, and I still do from time to time just to test the “ol softness level”. In fact as soon as this stuff takes it down a notch, me and my dog are doing a few days in the central Sierras 😁👍

Personally I think in an actual event that would cause the need to "bug-out" having huge tires like 37"s only hurt your range, I wouldn't expect to be able to acquire fuel, propane, butane etc. You may think you're fine with the 400miles of fuel you on board but you also need enough to return or resupply. So consider that only a 200mi range. I've been a lot of places and there is usually a way around if 32's wont get you up, while in most cases they will anyways. Personally like the narrow tires to maximize range. 235/85/16 or 255/85/16 the first being good enough to win Dakkar 5 years in a row.

Tall narrow tires rock! I have pulled dozens of lifted 4×4s with huge fat tires out of the ditches of Alaska. I had a C20, 1967 long bed 2 wheel drive, with a half inch steel plate bolted to the bed. 7×17" military tires with about 1000 studs each. (Winter setup)

Good on you guys. Even as a young man, many winters ago, our goal was to be comfortable even in the harshest weather. Be it fly in deer hunting on Admiralty island, with nothing more than a tarp for a tent, (12 inches of rain in 24 hrs.) or a 8 hour climb for mountain goats. We were like Hobbits. We sleep in hammocks every night, at hoe, camping, ect. This allows us a versatile setup whereas terrain does not play an issue in getting a good night's sleep. Not to mention it gives us the ability to setup camp in areas that most wouldn't consider viable for camping. Example, swamp land, mountainous areas, hillsides, ect. This also is a smaller footprint with a very fast setup & teardown to pack up to move... Plus it is the absolute most comfortable way to sleep!

Damn, camping has sure evolved to such an expensive thing to do. Even the water jugs nowadays are big bucks. I haven't bit the bullet yet and upgraded all my old camping gear thats work for me and my family for decades. Haven't gone since the pandemic came, but we used to camp atleast twice a year for the past 15 years. Even more if there were fishing tournaments.

I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't at least mention the difference between water "filtration" and "purification." They sort of used the terms interchangeably which can confuse people with less experience. They even said "filter your water so you don't get giardia" which is not correct. Most filtration systems wont remove parasites and bacteria, which is why there is a completely different term for that. So, for anyone who isn't as experienced, just remember, filtration will remove stuff like dirt, and other debris from the water and may improve the taste, HOWEVER, in order for the water to be completely clean you must purify it as well. Boiling isn't the most convenient but is usually the most accessible way to do this. UV light wands and purification tablets are also good choices. I always make sure to have one main system of filtration and purification as well as backups for both when I go out into the field. Stay safe, y'all!

I'm not really a fan of rooftop tents on vehicles. I know the likelihood is low, but if you are confronted by 2-legged predators in a state that your 2nd Amendment rights are restricted, you can't just jump in your vehicle and get the Hell out of Dodge with a rooftop tent deployed. Just something to think about.

Can someone clarify - the statement was made that you are not allowed to make fire, but immediately to screen left - there is a fire going.....was that meant in a way like - know the local ordinances at the time (which you always should) and in your area...or was that meant for your specific time right then? Just a little confused and would appreciate clarity on the matter. Thank you.

The fire was a propane fire pit which was allowed by permit in that specific location at that time. It was not an open wood fire.
