I've seen elsewhere on RU-vid that the gimbal camera cover isn't designed to stay on when flying since it blocks the air intake behind the camera which is used to cool down the internal components, there are two exhaust vents at the rear of the Mavic like a car that I've noticed on mine push out a lot of hot air. Down here in Florida you definitely want to have as much cooling capability when flying, maybe not so much in colder states like Ohio :-)
@tim wells - Thanks for the feedback! - Little update: From what I have heard DJI has confirmed that the slit in the cover allows for airflow to cool the Mavic and is no longer an issue... Blessings, S.O.
Just a quick heads up you are improperly calibrating your compass. First do not have the remote and tablet near your Mavic while calibrating. Second you rotate the aircraft like there is a post in the center not in that circular patter you are doing. Also aircraft is not calibrated on it's side second calibration is done nose down! Look at the manual. You need to give out correct information Guys!
There are vents and a cooling fan behind the gimbal. Leaving the plastic dome on the Mavic will run hot which will ultimately shorten the lifespan of the Mavic.
Someone told me this and then I looked at the plastic bulb more closely and discovered there is a slot in the dome to allow proper air flow. Take a look and see if you agree. You may not. But I think that's what the slot is for.
If you go to the DJI store and look at the listing for the gimbal cover at m.dji.com/product/mavic-gimbal-cover you can see it is made for "Protects gimbal and camera from collision, dust and water during transportation and in flight."
Duck Landes yeah I used the cover with out the gimbal clamp sense the video said it was ok . I quick got a error message saying my camera motor was over heating
I've forgot the gimbal clamp twice but I finally decided to quit using it and just use the cover. I bought an aluminum case that holds 3 batteries plus other accessories and don't throw it around so the gimbal only needs the clamp if you are traveling. Especially if you put it on the seat of your car and have to stop fast the whole case is going to jolt everything as it flies off the seat so the lock would be a good idea.
I did the same thing and saw someone comment somewhere to attach a piece of ribbon on the clamp so you will see it and be reminded to remove it. That works well for me.
Good idea. I have a "Remove Before Flight" ribbon that I used for a lens cover on the GoPro when I was flying the P2. Need to find it, drill a small hole, and attach it to the clamp. Oh my, advancing senility that comes with old age is a bxtch! Flew real planes for 30 years and RC for 40, seems I should be using a pre-flight check list. :)
I've had mine for around 3 weeks now, I've changed the C button on my right hand to centre focus, it makes things easier than using the phone screen. It's a wonderful little quad, and in sure I'll still be learning how to get the best out of it in 6 months from now.
Just received my Mavic Pro Platnuim, my friends keep asking me to fly it. I keep reminding them of the Harley Davidson rule. Want to drive it, "Go Buy your "F'n own" sounds bad but after one of them got on my 46' Flathead and got weak-kneed and dumped it on its side "STANDING STILL", I became a real, realist. Great Video !
two years later this was helpful, good stuff, been a mavic user since June 17 so thanks def didn't know about tripod mode for those hyper lapse, awesome
Great video guys. I didn't know about the USB connection to a tablet. Great tip. However, I disagree about leaving the camera protector on. It does make the footage look worse and it blocks air flow. There is a vent behind the camera where air should go in. The cover blocks it and can cause the Mavic to heat up more than it should. Any thoughts on this? Thanks for the video!
I'm using a modified dome from F-Stop Labs which I purchased on Amazon. Yes, there are those who have 3D printed these, but wherever you get them, they work great to offer some degree of protection to the gimbal in a crash situation, as well as act like a lens shade when the angle of incidence of the sun is forward. I've only seen it get into the frame when in sport mode and only when radically moving side-to-side, quickly braking, etc. Great way to have the advantages of the dome and a lens shade, too. Basically, it stays on all the time and I store it with the rubber boot over it to protect the lens. Only remove it to take off and put on the gimbal clamp... Great vid! Thanks!
Thanks for the quick and helpful video. Having had my Mavic for one month now, I'll add that I prefer to fly with a dedicated tablet or at the very least have airplane mode on otherwise receiving a call mid flight can be a scary experience.
Really good job on this, as always. I've had my Mavic Pro for a while now, and I didn't know you could zoom with it. I'll have to check that out. Keep up the good work and keep those video's comin'. Marc-Mavhawk
Thanks for making this. It's helped me for the fact that I'm a novice to cinematic efforts using a drone. One thing I would have liked to see here, and please just take it as face value, is that since you talk about firmware updates, updates, updates is that you would have suggested using DJI Assistant 2 for an option or linked in the description as this makes it much easier to check updates. Using the controller alone will not always show them. That is something I've learned in different forums. Always looking forward to your videos.
Helpful video. Even though I'v flown RC for years, this makes me more confident about buying one, just because of the camera tech side of things. Thanks! :-)
Great video. What setting does the camera need to be on to perform the time lapse. We are getting a house built and I want to do a time lapse video over time.
You sound very knowledgeable so can I please ask your advise re the mavic I have just got. The mavic box arrived a bit beaten up to begin with but it seemed ok inside. I started setting it up having watched loads of RU-vid videos already so was quite informed re this procedure. I noticed that it didn't want any firmware updates at any stage and some other bits on the app set up were missing too. Once the app had started and it said ready to fly I had no view from the camera, just a black screen behind all the icons. I was told by DJI to use a different device so instead of my iPhone 7 plus I used my iPad Pro 9.7". No difference, the camera still didn't show a picture but I could hear it trying to focus continuously. I phoned DJI and they said it was just a software issue. So I did as they said and downgraded and then upgraded and for the first time I had firmware prompts so I thought all was well. Started it all up, said it was connected and ready to fly etc but still a damn annoying black screen! 3 firmware updates done in all but camera still not working. I tried to fly it and all I could do was very basic, no fly to home etc as the buttons did nothing. The gimbal is ok and moves correctly however. I followed DJIs request re e mailing proof of purchase and evidential photos and I'm 6 days on and dji still won't send a label to send it back as they won't make a decision on what's happening next so I am left in limbo and not happy at all! Have you any suggestions for both i.e. Software suggestions and how to get DJI to pull their finger out and do something. Thank you so much for your time. Regards Moira (have just subscribed)
Thanks for a good video. I was told that the protective cover for the camera should always be removed before flight, because the drone has ventilation behind the camera, which will not work properly (since it blocks the airflow). So I always remove it. I would suggest u guys make a test, to actually see if the drone gets warmer? (with the cover on of course).
Any question compare with the Phanton in which when the battery is dangly depleted or, if lost connection... the Mavic with switch automatically to "Return Home"?
Thanks for the information on the Mavic Pro guys. Super helpful. I plan to be buying one soon or at least a drone so I was happy to see this video for sure. All the best with your channel.
Great tips!... Thank you.... Just got the drone and I am am a newbie on drones... and I just can't figure how do I know if the Intelligent Battery firmware is up to date... A message popped up saying that the firmware has to be updated and so I did and was successful, but I was not sure really if the battery firmware also needs an update... and if so, what about the spare batteries?
Excellent tip about the iPad guys, thank you... I was wondering what that USB port is for. What are the gloves you're using that still work on touch screens?
FliteTest Always! Now I just need to finish the FT Explorer that I got for Christmas and learn to fly that. Then onto the Sea Duck that I've yet to start on.
Hi I watched I think was Drone Valley and he said leaving the front cover on can cause overheating issues ? Also seen another tube vid where somebody modifies the cover to stop the pro's reflection by cutting a precise hole in it ? I enjoyed your video. I haven't ordered my Mavic yet still trying to convince myself to spend $2500.00 NZD for the combo.
Since it will connect to a Ipad, which is a good thing, is it also capiable of connecting Headplay googles to it. I have heard it will not but they must have not known about the Ipad connecting. I have the Inspire 1.2 and it will. Anyway,,Thanks
Hello ! I have tried to make a timelapse with my Mavic sitting on a table, not flying. The pictures came up not perfect aligned. Has anyone tested it before? I thought that, with the Mavic not flying, the pictures should look as if it was on a tripod. Performed the same test shooting video, and the camera also moves (slightly, the timelapse pictures makes it more evident). Could that be a guimbal problem, or al the mavics behave this way? Also, I saw your tripod mode timelapse test. Did you stabilize the footage? Thank you!
In camera settings you can adjust the maximum horizontal view of the gimbal by another 30 degrees! Could be helpful if you want to capture anything above the drone
The firmware was already up to date on the mavic that I recived in the UK. so far it has managed to battle in 30+mph winds well, make sure to avoid rain though there are allot of spaces that water can get in.
i think its actually really important to mention the supportive clip that holds the gimble steady for transport reasons. Even maybe show people how to take it on or off properly. If you get it right its very easy.
Hey guys, thanks for the great tips. I'm excited to try out the tripod mode/hyperlapse technique this weekend. Any thoughts on the best resolution/fps to use? Cheers!
Hi those were really some good tips. One question you talked about zoom and if someone is taping and doesn’t want to hear the prop noise you keep the drone far and zoom, but I noticed when u click to zoom you can hear the peeps. Is there a way to mute these peeps? Thanks.
quick question... I am new to drones and have a mavic now. I have noticed that even thou I have tapped to focus in the middle of the screen, my shots tend to have the left side of the picture sharper than the left. I have tried under different settings including manual and i still see this issue. Not sure if anyone else has had this issue or dont know if i am doing something wrong.
Do you guys have any tips regarding maintenance? Meaning maintenance for the motors, oiling certain parts or stuff like that? Regularly aircrafts have some mandatory maintenance every certain amount of hours, just wondering if that is the case for the Mavic, and Drones in General.
Moving timelapse is cool! Probably really easy with the autonomous modes too! I've seen the stop-motion stuff on the ground but that is really time-consuming compared to this. Great tips guys. Oh, yeah, and that Arrow with the aged metal and rivet paint scheme in the background is awesome.
FilmTrain The best way is to set your camera for timed burst pictures (not video), then set a slow speed while using Tapfly, Orbit, or waypoint. You can try focusing pn one particular object, or a general area. You can play around with speed and altitude, but a constant altitude will be smoother. Even more options are available with some third party apps like Autopilot or Litchi. Hope that helps!
I like the aerial time lapse...great stuff,. For the white balance for photography, if you shoot in dng raw, white balance can be adjusted in Lightroom in post so no need to mess around with that in camera
I'm used to dealing with manual camera settings as I used them with my DSLR all the time. The issue with this on the mavic is how well you can see the screen. Often before I even start to fly I'll sit the mavic on a flat surface and point it towards something (preferably a white object) so I can really dial in the white balance. I haven't done a lot of night flying but when I was trying to get a nice city horizon shot I ended up just setting everything to auto because there wasn't enough reference on the screen to really dial in the optimal manual settings.
great video as always. I ordered a mavice back in november and it still hadn't shipped by mid january, so after saving up a little extra money I ordered a phantom 4 pro and so far i love it, the only thing that I would have liked is the portability of the mavic, but the better camera and extra sensors are nice :P keep up the great work guys, got into drones because of this channel
Can you guys do a video on the Mavic for some better settings ok both cameras and video modes in manual. Basically going through the various settings and what you can do to get better quality. Also would love to know best settings for the gimbal to give it a nice smooth transition side to side and up/down
Last night I tried to fly at night for the first time with my Mavic Pro to shoot fireworks. I never had any problem with my Phantom 3 Pro. But the app would not even allow me to take off. It kept saying the light was too low and the app overrided any attempts to automatically or manually take off. I did not play with any camera settings like ISO, etc.. It was fairly dark on the street I was on. I also did not try to override the forward avoidance system. Any thoughts or advice?
How is Mavic's autopilot? I would like to use mine like the Hover Camera Passport when I'm on vacation to take selfie videos/pics. Is this easily doable or do I always need the remote handy?
thankyou for the info. I keep losing contact (every flight) with android and LG5 phone as tablet. Any ideas please. Jonathan Basckin Cape Town South Africa
Hi guys, I've had my Mavic Pro for a few months now - I was one of the first to receive my Fly More bundle. But unfortunately, here in the Chicago area the weather has been less than ideal, so I don't fly this one as often as I'd like. It's either too cold, almost dark from overcast or raining. My question however is about the transparent camera protector bulb: You mention that you can fly with it installed for say, casual "sport flying.,," while others contend that it's best to remove it because it obstructs the air flow to the intake vent just behind the gimble. I would prefer to fly with that little extra bit of protection when I'm not flying for footage, but I have been reluctant to, because of this theory. What are your thoughts on this?
I have a problem with the Yaw in TapFly being way too fast. I have reduced the Max Gimbal Pitch speed = 2 but still unusably fast for videography. Have you had this problem?
HELP....Live HD signal loss using DJI Go 4 App, using older DJI 3 Go app HD live is fine. Have tried two different Android devices, and have installed and reinstalled the application. If I fly the Mavic Pro with the older Go 3 App its fine and the HD signal has no loss, if I fly with the Go 4 App then its terrible and at time the feed is 100% pixels and blurred, you can just have it sitting on the ground and the signal has loss, flying I am standing next to it and the HD signal meter just flashes on and off and the video feed is scrambled.
