I come from the aerospace industry where titanium is used frequently. I believe you're right Joshua, you can make smaller lightweight parts with titanium but you are correct in that if any of the highly polished surfaces showed any signs of even the lightest scratch that part is scraped in my industry, titanium will fatigue fail where steel will just slowly deform.
@danusas88
@danusas88 Год назад
But if you're going to crash your drone, wouldn't you prefer the screws to be the weakest link so that you'd have a better chance of saving the motors? The crash impact energy needs to be absorbed somehow; I would prefer it not go to the motors.
@1997Jeep
@1997Jeep 8 месяцев назад
@@danusas88Titanium and steel have different levels of DUCTILITY. Steel can undergo significant plastic deformation before it fails. Titanium, is more prone to fracture. Over tightening a steel screw stretches it, and locks the threads, a titanium screw fractures and fails when you are depending on it later. ( I hope this isn't a lightweight build intended to be around people )

Never thoughts about it but from a former aircraft assembler your right. We would put lead rivets where expansion and contraction would happen and titanium composite bolts where we needed rigidity They would bend to an extent when trying to get a jammed one out, (because it wasnt pure titanium) but once that tension point was reached to would snap like concrete.

The alloy of titanium used makes all the difference! The alloy they use for titanium motor shafts works OK. But most screws of any metal sold on the open market tend to be low grade easy to work metal. Notice haw Joshua said "high grade" steel screws.
@TJPDmember

exactly, comparing "cheap" titanium hardware to high grade steel is a stretch. Ti will fatigue faster, but a good grade Ti hardware is more than enough.

You CAN build a nice sub-250g 5 inch quad. The fly really nice and smooth (without a fancy PID tune) which is exactly what I wanted; a 5 inch cruiser (no GoPro; not my thing). Also, it was quite durable; crashes never broke anything. Due to a video issue, I lost it in thick Florida brush. Anyway, I liked it and will build another sub-250g 5 inch; so I don't think this is a "RUIN"; quite the opposite. Since I don't do Acro and don't carry a GoPro, these builds are really SWEET and smooth little cruisers. I am also working on a light weight 7 incher. Don't know if it will make sub-250g, but think it will come in under 300g. Yeah, I know this is above the 250g mark, but I think it will be a nice long range cruiser.

One thing not to do that I found out the hard way was to not make the wires longer than needed. 2 days ago I transferred my electronics from my old GepRC LX5 to a GepRC Mark4 frame and I managed to do so with minimal soldering, however this meant that my wires from the FC to the (separate) ESC's had no slack. I took it out and everything flown great, right up until I crashed into a branch hard on my last pack. The crash snapped an arm, but the flex from the crash actually ripped the ESC power pads right off the flight controller from the arms that didn't even break. This was simply because there wasn't any slack in the wires.

All my builds are pretty much slammed, I have so much regret fitting an air unit into every single one of them... :'( A T-Motor F7 55A esc stack, crossfire nano, GPS, RGB controller, and buzzer into the tiny space of the racing frame that is the Transtec Laser was my first mistake. Doing the exact same with a Flywoo chasers frame was my second lol Repairing both of those takes a full day of disassembly. In order to replace the motors on either of them I have to completely disassemble the quad and with the transtec laser HD I have to remove the bottom plate and the arms as you feed the motor cables underneath a pocket created between the arms and the plate. Nightmare fuel. I've disassembled and reassembled that quad a dozen times now... so many hours of stress. Surprisingly my easiest drone to build in is a beta95x v2... If you want to build a drone with those features I mentioned above, build it in a freestyle frame not a racing one or you'll suffer.

Titanium does tend to be more brittle. It is a stiffer metal, however when it is being manufactured into whatever shape is needed, it can alloy with other elements that make it less durable. It also tends to be more “slippery” than other metals and will have a greater tendency to vibrate loose if loctite is not used.

Nylon standoffs are fine if used properly. Not as frame supports indeed. But fine for keeping stack together. In my practice breaking them happened in very rare occasions on definitely hard crashes. Stacking pin headers for FPV quads became obsolete somewhere around 2018 when all new boards started to came out with filled pads and JST 1.0 sockets.

I use high quality titanium screws from KCNC on my discs for my disc brakes on my downhill mountain bike. They have survived without problems for 4 years without issue now. I can't see how they can't take the strains of a quad-motor if they're good quality.
@ZacharyPiercy
@ZacharyPiercy 3 года назад
Yeah they can certainly have *_enough_* tensile strength to get the job done (have used them and other superalloys for my job), but I think the main point JB is trying to make is their strength is still lower than a standard high grade steel fastener. Steel also generally has higher elongation at failure (9-12%) than Ti (8-10%) which helps to “fail-safe” by yielding and becoming loose rather than fracturing. tl;dr - Titanium has higher specific strength (strength/weight) but lower absolute strength. IMO if you’re bashing your DH rig around I don’t think the couple grams of lower mass is worth the loss of robustness/failure warning, but they do look sweet!
@megatryn
@megatryn 3 года назад
@@ZacharyPiercy On my DH rig, I save weight where it is possible and add strength where needed. Ti bolts on places that has shear load and non critical load tensile load (disc rotor mount, link monut, shock mount, seat post mount). Tires, tire inserts, and rims I use proper stuff that can take a beating, I build my own wheels with double butted spokes and brass nipples. I would for instance never use ti bolts to mount brake calipers or for stem bolts. So, yeah. Ti bolts ar perfectly fine if you know where to use them. And for looks: Mine are silver, so the look kust like regular steel bolts.

I have mounted several Kakute 7 with steel standoffs by cutting the rubber bumber in half and placing it underneath the FC. Next down the standoff is a plastic washer sitting on the ESC bumber. Works great. With the Kakute foam mounted gyro, it's all probably dampening overkill anyway!

There are a lot of cheap Titanium Grades with a low strength, so maybe you are right with that. But a great titanium grade got a tensile strength up to 1000MPA, so it is really amazing. Best regards.

High grade titanium screws work fantastic for motors. I use 2 ti screws on each motor and have never once had a motor come off
@Plur307
@Plur307 3 года назад
You should weigh them. You will be surprised to find out Titanium is significantly heavier than Aluminum. Titanium has a density of 4.5g/cm^3. Aluminum has a density of 2.7g/cm^3. 3 Aluminum screws will literally be lighter than 2 Titanium screws of equal size. Most people are confused about Titanium and think it is lighter (less dense) than Aluminum, it isn't. Titanium is a lightweight alternative to steel, but Aluminum is still an even lighter choice than Titanium.

A lot of the Aluminum/Titanium/Steel differences depends quite a bit on the temper, grade, and alloy of the material. It's pretty common with cheap parts, particularly bolts, to have Pure Titanium which is cheap and easy to work, but is significantly weaker than some grades of aluminum. Getting the proper Grade 5/Grade 23 alloys does give you a strength similar to some grades of steel, but they are much more expensive coming from legitimate sources. I've also found titanium to be somewhat better at resisting and damping vibration and better at bending than aluminum or steel, but I don't have any real data for that. Ultimately, the weight savings you get from 16 M3 screws is like a gram or two, but the cost increase is impractical for the gram or two you save in weight ($3-$10 PER TITANIUM BOLT). There's also no real strength gains, as Gr2 titanium has a listed strength of 40,000 PSI, and Gr5 of 130,000, while Class 12.9 Steel bolts are 170,000 and the more common Class 10.9 are 140,000.

I was planning on buying a Geprc Cinequeen but I noticed that it has the pin headers. Is it just the 30x30 ones that are bad or the 20x20 ones as well? I haven’t seen anyone complaining about this being a problem with this drone... is there another similar drone that doesn’t have the pin headers? Thanks

Smaller drones, less weight, less speed, what is used to mount the stack, what is connected to the stack that may pull on it, can all affect it. Likely a cinequeen will be fine

It ended in failure, and i immediately bought a metal stand off kit, albeit made of copper ..lol! As long as we learn, not just from our own, but from everyone's mistakes.
