Fellow hygienist here! I worked at a periodontal office and a common pattern I saw was referring recession too late! (Along with the classic - diagnosing Periodontal disease too late). So to all my fellow hygienists ‐ gum grafting and connective tissue grafting helps a ton! Even if your patient's recession is only slight, I would recommend a referral because we would rather prevent before recession becomes too severe! It also is a great option for helping get rid of that cold sensitivity if nothing else is helping! And gum grafts/connective tissue grafts really aren't as bad as you think! I've had one and you just need to ice a lot and the pain was pretty manageable for me. Also, receding gums can be very associated with genetics and just having a thin biotype so it may not always be you "causing it" so don't feel guilty if you have recession! Thanks for the video, I loved it!
I have struggled with periodontal disease for a few years now, and combining both interdental brushing and flossing has proven to be the best way to keep the gums healthy and clean. I do wish I knew how to do it properly from the start
thank you so much for the kind comment :) here's a video of mine with tips on finding a good dentist -- hope this helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sDe50j0MFBU.html
I had a gum disease and since I've had a deep cleaning done, using electric toothbrush and adding interdental brushes and water flossing to my daily routine, worked magic. I use interdental brushes every time I clean my teeth and a water flosser at least once per day. My gum recession is minimal, and since my gums are now nice, pink and healthy., I hope it stays this way.
Possibly, if your gums are sensitive, they are more than likely inflamed, water flossing properly will keep them cleaner and should reduce inflammation which is why the gums are sensitive, so the short answer is it can potentially help.
Gum recession: soft gingival tissue (your gums) are pulled back away from the tooth exposing and/or compromising the structures underneath. (Receding gums) 1. Poor home oral care (Plaque buildup) brush 2x a day for 2 min and floss 2. Aggressive tooth brushing (Harder is not better; be gentle or you could brush your gums away) 3. Teeth grinding/clenching (aka bruxism) teeth can wear down day after day and enamel might slowly chip off. 4. Genetics 🧬 Family history may make you predisposed to dental issues 5. Crooked teeth (Tooth’s can get gum recession due to the tension in those crooked teeth) get braces or aligners 6. Tobacco use (Smoking of any type adds irritants to your soft tissues and makes them more prone to disease) gums cannot grow back on their own so be careful!
thanks so much. Can't bear to listen to someone (anyone, it's not personal) talk over what I consider musical noise pollution. Many of these infotainment channels do this now, ever since YT began to push the idea with a catalog of muzak (some of which is free, some of which you need to pay for, which is why it is presented as upping the production value of your videos. believe you me, it doesn't).
Also if you wore orthodontics that can also cause. I have have gum recession and bone loss, and my dentist said it was due to orthodontics. They said with the shifting of the teeth sometimes the bone doesn’t go along with it.
It seems like there is a SUPER fine line between being thorough while brushing your teeth, but also at the same time DON'T brush too aggressively. It's almost like you can't win if your gums are very thin and predisposed to recession.
I agree! I use hard bristle brushes because soft bristles leave tons of crap on my teeth. After a couple of months, the build-up is very noticeable. I don't press very hard; even with soft bristles, my toothbrushes never show wear. Going back to hard bristles made my teeth a lot cleaner. I've had problems with receding gums since my pregnancies 40+ years ago, so I've always been scared of brushing too hard. But where do you draw the line between clean teeth and hurting your gums?
This is why you should use an electric toothbrush. It does the work for you, it alerts you if brushing too hard, but still gets your teeth very clean, better than a manual
I have gum recession. My old dentist always mentioned it. My new dentist also noticed it. My new dentist did a periocharting on the intake visit. They said my gums were in great shape, 1&2's. I have zero cold sensitivity. I can feel that my gums have receeded bellow the gum line, but I have had zero issues thus far. I will stress about cleaning better. You gave some awesome tips!
I also have it on bottom teeth. I think I brush too hard. My hygienist told me that I do. I have a bad fear they will fall out. I have always took care of my teeth don't know what I would do if they do. .😢. I would never leave my house again . 😊😊.
For those with recession or any other dental condition, dentistry is a wonderful field with many wonderful and caring dentists and hygienists who truly care for your health-there is hope--always.
I never thought I'd find myself subscribing to a RU-vid channel on oral care but your videos have an oddly soothing tone to them. I can't explain it, but thanks for the fun vibe and videos, girl!!!
Dear God, gum grafts are one of the worst things I've ever gone through.. trust me, it sucks.. do anything and everything to avoid getting to a place where you have to do it.. take my word for it.. 😭
Genetics too. I don’t drink soda only water. Eat twice a day brush morning and every time I brush, and floss. Get my teeth cleaned every 6 months. I do grind my teeth though
I thought it was a good idea to brush with baking soda. I researched it and understood that it was less abrasive than regular toothpaste. Also I used it because I can get a a little whitish sore that will develop in my mouth after eating citrus or highly acidic foods and the bicarbonate neutralizes that. I told my dentist and hygienist every time I had a cleaning that I was using soda and they were ok with it. After about four years my gums were whiteish and kind of sloughing away and I was really alarmed and wanting to know what was going on. My dentist was puzzled but had no suggestion. Stopped using baking soda and the situation was resolved after a few weeks.
Dear Whitney, your content is a God send. Thank you so much for this channel and your excellent work. I appreciate your delivery style. I come here regularly! You’ve helped me and my family so much. Blessings to you.
When my dentist talked to me about the fact that my gums were receding, they mentioned tooth grinding as one possible cause, and brushing too hard as another. I did tend to brush my teeth a bit hard because no one ever taught us how we were supposed to brush them, and I assumed hard brushing would remove plaque if there was any. It wasn't until later that I found out that SMOKING can also cause gum recession, as it reduces circulation. I do grind my teeth, but no one ever mentioned a night guard! *sigh*
yesss! and thank you!!!! I need to start using my IG GIFs again with the "teeth talk tuesday" and "toothy thursday" images!! :) thank you for remind me!!! haha!
I found that my electric brush, even with a softer head on it, was causing gum recession, even when the pressure light wasn't coming on. I do tend to brush for longer than 2 minutes, though. Also, aggressive flossing, as well as gingivitis and periodontitis can cause recession, right?
When I first got braces, I kept getting crap stuck between the same two teeth all the time so I flossed there quite a bit. Bled a few times. Didn’t floss on an angle like you’re supposed to, but up and down and now I have a gap between those teeth because the gum receded slightly and now my Ortho has to try and close the gap. So yeah, aggressive flossing is a bad idea
i wish gums grew back because i started brushing harder this year thinking it was helping and the gums above one tooth receded :') i wonder, could it also be from flossing too high up?
I have crooked teeth ☹️☹️😥😥 and very bad receding gums in fact I just got diagnosed with gum disease recently but there's nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing nothing I can do about my crooked teeth!! Because braces are so expensive I can't afford them because for whatever reason having teeth is considered cosmetic by medical instead of a vital important part of the body ,, what can I do???? Besides other options what else can someone with very crooked teeth but can't do anything about it to help my receding gums?? I hate that getting braces is so expensive 😭😭😭
I only brush when I wake up. I have to get a deep cleaning done. My first side cleaning is in February of next year. I also have severe gun disease and a severe overbite so my dentist wants me to see an orthodontist.
Good info. I got gum recession and so-called black triangles as a result of Invisalign treatment (they don't warn you about that!). I clench my teeth during the night. I wear the thicker Vivera retainers every night. Do they also act like a mouth guard, or would I need to get fitted for a real guard and then that takes the place of retainers?
I thought a way to know that your teeth are properly brushed is when u run your tongue over the surfaces they should feel smooth. A soft or extra soft toothbrush doesn't do that 4 me
Random question: I’ve heard a lot about Gum Resorption especially in adult orthodontics (increased risk of). I’ve been in braces for about 17 months, and we are trying to close space but I feel like we have been trying to close this small gap for a few months now. They finally have me going back every 2-3 weeks, but my question is, on average (because I know it depends on the patient) how long does it take to close little gaps? My fear is I will be in braces for another 6 months trying to close the gap and increase my risk of resorption as I’m 26 years old. Thanks!
Whitney, there is a “doctor” here on RU-vid sharing her “system” claiming you to NOT floss, use a hard toothbrush and use strong mouthwashes, ... can I share the videos? Would love your opinion. My gum recession is caused by genetics, and clenching at night 😢 I will do. A mouth guard with my dentist. This topic is crucial for me, the more you share, the better. And please debunk misleading infos. Those people need to be stopped...
@@TeethTalk That dentist would be Dr. Ellie Phillips DDS. She is hated by many in the dental community for her unorthodox and naturopathic approach to dental wellness. Like the commentor above, often the doctor is mis-quoted to make her appear foolish. Example; the brushes she recommends are actually soft (,Dr Plotkas Extra Soft Bristle Flossing Toothbrush), but her method includes some vigorous gum massage. I begin her 6 month self care system next week. The reason? My dentist, working in collusion with his hygienist, tried to sell me on becoming a *lifetime* periodontal patient based only on a temporary decline in gum health due to poor care during a recent bout of insomnia. That's right, a deep cleaning at great cost and discomfort every 3 months for *the rest of my Life.* To convince me I needed this, they had me double down on my flossing, brushing, and water picking...which of course made it worse. After an entire weekend of binge watching Dr.Ellie's videos, I am convinced that rather than deep cleaning, a rigid home care system pioneered by this dentist of 50 years, and author of several books on the topic may well be my best course of action. BTW, I am a self taught expert on bad dentistry. I began that education in 1961, and paid the price for my education in much blood (literally), pain and suffering, and tens of thousands of dollars. The field of dentistry is ripe with con-men & women and incompetents. Patient health is not their priority, the income is. My proof of that? Not even ONE of the 30 or 40 dentists I've had told me that tooth decay was 90% due to eating habits. They ALL said I had a weak immune system and pre-disposition to decay/caries. I was doomed to quarterly cleanings with a minimum of 2 fillings or a crown *every visit.* Six years ago I went to a keto /carnivore lifestyle. No more sugar, grains, or other sticky carbs. Guess what? 4 1/2 years now with not one single cavity. Four areas that my dentist insisted must have decay removed and filled actually re-mineralized and healed themselves. It's true. I WILL restore my gum health and dental biome this same way, naturally. Dr. Ellie's program makes sense.
My step-dad will brush his teeth watching TV. He brushes super hard. He feels that brushing vigorously for a long time will keep his teeth squeaky clean.
My dentist lied to me then. I asked him, how do i avoid the gum recession and kinda like a hole between my molars gap from going futher back, he replied saying -as long as you interdental clean the area and floss it will grow back
My gums are growing back after increasing my protein intake to .5 grams per pound of body weight. I wasn't getting half that before and I paid the price in slow healing, thin skin, hair loss, etc., etc. My hair is growing back, too, after suffering major hair loss for 8 years.
I use hard bristles because my pressure is so light that I can't get my teeth clean otherwise. Just to elaborate, even using soft bristles, my pressure was so light that my brushes never showed wear.
i went to the dentist yesterday and they gave me a Bill of Almost $30,000 to fix my teeth and with insurance $15,000. I was thinking what do you want me to do Rob a Bank? or Play Squid Game in real life to become a Millionaire and Go back to the Dentist? Fuck that I am going to a Student Dentist that can fill the holes in my teeth and make the Pain Go away but I have Poor dental hygiene. Have you ever heard of "Dental Tourism? I would be better off going to Mexico to get my teeth fixed. and I will focus on getting improving my dental hygiene. But I would be scared to get Hurt in America due to How expensive Medical bills can be I have heard in documentaries. Lots of Companies are making money from Selling tons of Sugar and Junk food and Processed Food.
Lots of people, including my brother, go to Mexico for dental work. Stop eating sugar. Use stevia or monkfruit, or even Splenda. As you reduce your sugar consumption, your desire for it will decrease. Since my husband and I stopped sugar, we don't get cavities any more. I use Splenda in my coffee and tea and don't consume sugary cereal or soda pop. I have a mouthful of fillings dating back to childhood, but I haven't had a cavity since 2003.
Also, increase your protein intake, and start using a mouthwash with phosphate. Your teeth are made of not only calcium, but phosphate, too. I rebuilt the enamel on a tooth that was worn down to the dentin on the tip with a homemade trisodium phosphate rinse. You can also buy commercially made phosphate mouthwash. It sounds radical, but it works.
here are my videos about xylitol -- hope these help: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6D050cgCZaw.html and ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_q_mutp0jGM.html
quick answer -- yes can help prevent cavities in addition to fluoride! and indirectly it might help with gum recession by helping repel plaque however it does not replace the mechanical motions of brushing and flossing. hope this helps!
America has some of the most profitable Tobacco Companies. But lucky for me I don't smoke or drink alcohol But I am dedicated to Candy and Sugar and Junk food. and Not knowing how to cook makes me want to buy more processed foods. The market capitalization of Philip Morris (PM) Market cap: $141.59 Billion As of November 2023 Philip Morris has a market cap of $141.59 Billion. This makes Philip Morris the world's 81th most valuable company
the recession due to calculus is included in the "poor home care" section: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jAsNJcb4iag.htmlsi=Qu5baTuta4F_ejNZ&t=67 hope this helps!
Hi love this channel! I shake after getting a carbocaine injection (no epinephrine) could it be nerves, my gerd or just the fact that it’s really cold in the office?? Not sure what it is- spoke to my assistant she said it was just nerves.. still trying to figure out why.. thanks!!
here's a video of mine that explains about brushing more than twice -- hope this helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ncmR6BR9Mlo.html
i told my dentist that my teeth were starting to get yellow from all the coffee & cigs. I asked her what i could do. She said: "Wear a brown shirt!" :/
I gave all the ways to prevent it from getting worse in order to decrease the chances of needing a graft. The goal of dental hygiene is prevention -- thus preventing grafts. Hope this helps!
I have like 3 receding gums on my lower bottom front teeth. Primarily from the overbite that is being corrected and brushing too hard as a little kid with harder toothbrushes my mother gave me because she was ignorant. I brush carefully morning and night with an electric toothbrush but still find what looks like something white along the gum line. When I go in with a brace pick and scrap it off, it comes off and my gums look cleaner. What causes this?
I had this very issue. My problem was gingivitis. I've been getting professional cleanings every 3 months for over two years. At my last cleaning I was told I am 90% better than when I came in for my first visit. I had the issue with my lower front teeth pulling away from my gums but it has since resolved. Nothing like a great report from the hygienist. 🥰
Stop consuming sugar, and start using a phosphate mouthwash (either manufactured or diy) to rebuild your tooth enamel. It sounds radical, but it works. Your teeth are made of calcium AND phosphate. I rebuilt the enamel on a canine tooth where the tip had worn down to the dentin using a homemade trisodium phosphate rinse.
Jesus Christ loves you! ❤ He came to earth and died to save us from our sin so that we can have eternal life. Anyone who puts their faith in Him and trusts in what He did will be saved from eternal torment in hell. Pray to Him and ask for forgiveness and ask Him to change your heart. The Bible, which is Gods Holy word, says in John 3:16: For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. God bless you and have a wonderful day!
My husband hardly ever cleans his teeth! Nor does any dental hygiene! And doesn't have a single filling! I started having fillings from a child, most of my teeth are crowns now, I have gum recession, although I take good care of my teeth. I have nightmares of all my teeth crumbling into my hands! He was lucky enough to grow up in a very fluoride rich water area. His whole community is the same. It's just not fair😅
It’s actually pretty unbelievable how many random things like this throughout an individual’s childhood that either set allow you to cruise through adulthood without the hassles that everyone else has or be In the trenches never able to catch up to childhood mistakes/ignorance to whatever problems your dealing with lol.
Whitney? What if you only have slight gum recession on left side molars???? Also I find it better to use a manual brush considering it’s me doing the work and using less force
I had two hour long deep clean sessions with a new hygienist and straight after, I started getting burning in the gum in between two teeth. Fast forward 5 months and the localised pain is worse, the gum has receded a crazy amount, but my dentist insists nothings wrong. I'm really worried I'm going to lose a tooth soon. 😢
you look amazing in the video, too pretty lady with amazing hair cut and smile. the video contain a lot of useful information, but i wish if you speak more about treatments for recover exposed tooth roots and it's details, i know it may be more technical part but your way is amazing and deliver the info easy. best wishes.
Hi :) I have a question pls if I hate needles can't that be replaced gel or spray but still not feel something if injection is stronger than these 2? I might need clean-up underneath. Many thanks and I'd appreciate ur reply!
Hi very useful. just like to find out regarding laser treatment like Nd yag? or is it better to have traditional gum flap surgery to eliminate bacteria and reduce pocket. if you have perio gum disease. please let us know which is effective cleaning methods? Thanks
Area I live in is booked out for a year and a half on preventive maintenance such as cleanings how are people supposed to have routine care when there is a shrinking number of people available in the dental field dentists hy- Gentis and so forth
Hello! @TeethTalk Love your videos. However I have an honest question. What is a dental hygienist?? We don't have that in Europe. We only have dentists here. Is it the same as a dentist? Do they have a dentist degree? No shade, I just want to know where I'm getting my information from.
Good question! A dental hygienist is a licensed dental professional who specializes in preventive oral care. They perform tasks such as teeth cleanings, x-rays, and educating patients on oral hygiene. Dental hygienists typically hold an associate or bachelor's degree in dental hygiene. They focus on oral disease prevention (such as with prophys, deep cleanings/scaling and root planings, and administering local anesthetic in most states). In some states they also have the option to acquire expanded functions to perform procedures like fillings, as well. Also, here's my "what is a dental hygienist" video -- hope this helps: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-BFTrSEvaKwM.html
what is your question? please type it in as a new comment because I don't get alerts for threads on old videos. or DM me on IG @teethtalkgirl if I don't see it
My problem is that my molars are so tightly to each other, that I can not pull in the dental floss between them, even with brute force it is impossible.
Guards did not help grinding and no ,4000 for sleep study. I mean,it must be nice to have a perfect life where u can work and everything has an easy answer
they have a very different diet than us -- and even so -- many of them lose their teeth due to gum disease and/or cavities depending on the species. here's a video of mine that explains: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OEzSUjkwqkk.html
Hello, thanks for a great video! I have a question about gum recession. If the gum receeds on the inner side of the canine tooth in the lower jaw, is it possible to stop the recession by applying gum graft surgery?
