Its hillarious to watch internet experts keep saying, "get rid of your first generation Chevy small block, you can't make any streetable power out of those, you need an LS". bullshift. back in the days of the big three--cam, carb, and compression--it wasn't easy to get past 400 hp when only a set of stock fuelie heads were available, but the days of "only Crane Fireball heads" or a trip to Joe Mondello are done and over. But the LS fans still let these first gen stuff go for dirt cheap, so let 'em keep complaining. The deal with the LS is that it has a deep skirt Y block design that creates a large crankcase volume, reducing pumping losses on the pistons as they descend like a parachute, while the valve angles are the same as a Pontiac V8 and the cathedral ports flow as much air as most aftermarket chevy engine ports.
The LS platform has its advantages for sure. For me, I'm a bit old school and like the stuff I cut my teeth on. You are correct, back in the day 450hp was a street killer and took lots of work to get there. Today 600 plus is a simple deal
Hey keep in mind there were cars from Detroit rated at 250hp but that was at 1,800 rpm so at almost idle for insurance reasons. Like the 302 chevy. You could get 500 out of them on Friday and race on Saturday
@@philthelawnman Agreed, and I don't mean to sound like a flathead V8 fan in 1965 knocking the new GTO tripower. The LS design and the new Hemi can make affordable power on a dyno. But then you buy everything necessary to fit into an engine compartment not designed for it (ie, $400 throttle by wire gas pedals, $1,000 electronic steering systems, etc) and the cost hits you then. Ford is accused of overrating their FE engines from the 1960's, but for the most part you're right even with the old rating system of open exhaust and no alternators on, there was an underrating. Chevy even learned a lesson from the Hemi--the first street 426's were built loose to get them out there and winning, expected to be bought by owners who would tear them down to blueprint. problem was, rich kids would buy the hottest thing the dealer had and come right back with intake bolts in the intake manifold. so when chevy came out with the L88, it was 430 hp--and the L71 tripower, designed for the street and warantees, was rated at 435 so that non racers and vets home with combat pay would grab the L71 427 instead and not bug the dealerships with the issues of a full-outhouse race engine in their corvettes. but we all knew it made a lot more.
I've always been a big fan of the "Gladiator 350" build from the early 00's. It made 524hp from a ZZ4 bottom end, AFR 190 heads, Comp 254/260 solid roller with 5.83 lift on 92 octane.
I want to add, I'm a thinker and study like you, always have been. I have a 400 sbc in my 69 Corvette and it'll probably stay that way. I always wanted a 600hp sbc but unfortunately it's not very streetable. You did a great job with excellent parts selection and spent the money in the right places ! Love this build !
Scott, Your not a ordinary guy your a exordinary fellow Hot Rodder and I truly appreciate how humble & Honest you are... & that you share yourself with the world ! Thanks my fellow Drag Racer 🏁
There is no better feeling than building an engine that takes all the punishment you can throw at it in bracket racing. Pride of the build is tantamount.
I'm a lot like yourself. I built my 1st engine at 15 yrs old. I bought and read the book called how to Hotrod a small block Chevy. Read it cover to cover multiple times. I got my hands on an older Chevy station wagon. Well the wagon was loaded from the factory. Everything was heavy duty and built to tow. I only really wanted the Turbo 400 transmission it had. Come to find out it was a 4 bolt main block. I followed a step by step approach to build an exact replica of the 1970 LT1 375 hp 350. I think it was 375 or 370. Not sure now. It was more than 40 yrs ago. But I had all of the right parts. Fulie 202 heads, a steel crank, the factory Winters 4 barrel intake and the optional 3972178 solid lifter cam. Although I did use a set of Harlan Sharp roller rockers. That motor ripped! Keep up the good work. Love reading these types of stories. There's still a few of us, of this dying breed, left in the world.
Never watched any of your stuff before, and haven't even got to the meat of the video yet. But after ~2 minutes, you've got a new subscriber! I relate to what you said in those first couple minutes, and I especially appreciate your clear and eloquent delivery.
Great job. Real motor for real guys. I don't think people realize how dependable a motor like that is. Circle track guys run prepped 2 bolt blocks all the time. If you never use more nitrous than it should have, no problems. In the early 90s my running buddy had a 79 C10 with w 2bolt cast 400 crank and 5.65 rods swinging cast pistons. He put over 10 bottles thru that mill in the next couple of years before he broke a ring gland. It smoked but, ran. we pulled it down and replace 1 piston. The tune determines how something lives. If you need 4 bolt mains, steel h beams and super expensive pistons, you might need wiggle for poor tuning practices. You did a great job and will have many runs with that combo. Best of luck to you. Keep up the good work.
Basically the same engine I had in my ‘63 Chevy ll. Mine had Dart Pro 1 heads, 230 flow. Had a 12 bolt posi with 4.10 gears. It ran strong but wasn’t very streetable.
Prosytem built my carb for 421 Chevy.995 cfm….will never run an out of the box carb again!running same heads as you and custom grind comp solid roller.
421 Chevy is kinda a pain in the ass to build.small base circle cam, special pushrods, lifters, timing chain, all the clearancing, ect.I get to ever do another hot rod,Iam slapping in a 525horsr LS crate.Cant recommend the Liberty Gear TKO600 Pro trans enough though!
What you said in the begining of this video is so true. It's all about doing it your self and having fun and being a part of it. Not just buying a fast car and bragging about it.
Never saw your channel before but I subscribed because you are interesting and your intro is right to the facts... thanx.. I have a 383 sbc 535hp 522 to all under 6000 rpm
"Copy that" on the local truck driver. I'm at that point where I need to decide on an engine for my c3 vette. Well over due for a new engine. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful. 👍
All the pat mussi rolling thunder series cams are a 112 -114 Center line and he builds great engines ,love your honesty that engine makes good horse power ,good choice with the bigger carb
With 13.2:1, 384.6 cubes and a 2.10" 23° setup, I'd probably run 109 lobe centerline (or the 106 he has at 11.5:1 or less and 112 at 14.5:1, 114 at 15.5:1...). And I'd target the duration based off what I thought overlap should be for that combination. So I'd guess he's probably making more avg power with a 106 vs a 112-114 in this case.
I am an engine builder. I was skeptical at the start of this video. Youve done well with that combination. Theres nothing that will ever supercede paying attention to detail! Youre getting 406 numbers out of that!
Great job showing and telling, I am a truck driver to and I have a old 350 motor do not know the year. I wood like to fix it one day later cause I am fixing my 460 Ford motor right now. just wanted to put headers on it broke six bolts off in the head.so now I am going to just rebuild it, it needs it it a1990 f350 long bed. So it’s had a hard working life so I’ll rebuild it. well good telling ya about it and thanks again for showing telling well see ya next time see ya bye.
I had a 460 in a 91 super duty (F450) dump truck back when my wife and I owned a tree service. That thing was a beast, but It would run a bit hot. I could totally see exhaust manifold bolts breaking on a motor like that. Thanks for watching and be safe out there!
Just came across this video and really enjoyed it. I don't race but had a couple of street cars built on a tight budget that ran OK. My approach is pretty much like yours. I am just starting a channel and will be up in the next month or so. I just subscibed and will be watching your other vids.
i ran a .700 lift in my small block on the street. it was in a pro street 55 chevy, it worked great. i now run a .750 lift in my Nova. big cams on the street get a bad rap.
Why is this type of stuff not more publicly known. Everyone’s so impressed with a $50,000 hellcat that makes 707 WITH a supercharger and a larger engine, meanwhile guys are building small block Chevys to make even 700 horse sometimes naturally aspirated with an damn carburetor. That’s something to brag about
Not a engine builder but I’m still running my 454 bored over to a 502 in my 84 cutlass that motor has been going strong since I had it built in 2004 loved the video information brother glad to see someone doing somthing they love it’s a hobby somthing I always tell my buds it’s in us not on us
Lol I got a 454 125 over and a stroked crank that is a 505 cubic inch , runs great no over heating 1/8 mi at a time , Also got a 496 also . 565 is next but requires a after market block
That's a nice build my 427 60 over only made a few more hp and I have all good parts I have afr heads Howard's hydraulic roller but I built this for my daily driver that's why I went with the hydraulic roller it's only ly 235x241@50 618 lift I do have a solid roller for the motor that's a Lil bit bigger but I'm happy with it I made 661 hp at 6000 rpm and 605 torque I was thinking of putting it in a s10 but it going in my 88 monte carlo SS
This is a cool video about the camshaft im a budget drag car builder im building my last one at age 50 its an altered dragster my boss is building me a 383 cool story i couldn't afford to build that type of motor he said its a sponsor through napa i was blown away
I like your video. This is a first video I have watched of yours. I live down here in Redding ca. so just one state down from you. I am a big small block guy. I do race some brackets but mostly heads up grudge stuff. I gave a 1963 nova that I have owned since the late 1990s. Right now I built a 461 small block with lots of nitrous. I do all my own engine work except for the machine work obviously. But I run up there in Medford sometimes. Anyway it’s good to see the average joe out there doing his own work. Keep your videos coming, I subscribed and give ya a thumbs up.
Thanks! I'm very curious about shootout and no prep racing. I went to the last race here in medford but wasnt able to race any of the slower classes cause my truck was down. Hopefully this year!
I'm in northern California and yeah I have got next day delivery from Summit a few times, but usually I get everything 2nd day. I really used to like when they was no sales tax from Nevada and they m had the $100 coupon off $1000 almost every month!
I built a sbc 355 with 6"rods 12.75 comp afr 210 outta the box heads and Crane nitrous solid roller 262 270@ .50 630 lift. It definitely made close to 600 im sure from how fast the car was.
What a stout motor! Love it, that’s what research and lots of thinking gets you instead of just slapping one together with a hoj poj of parts! Oh and what gas do you use?
U Squirreled out find a high nickel 2 Bolt it's a good platform no matter what some of these people might think.I have built plenty of Circle Track Motors running roughly the same combination and Power $6,000 for 600 horse that's a heck of a deal should plenty of good runs without any problems and yes I will share this with a few hundred friends knowledge is always going to be power✌
Watch that timing chain Cloyes set are great but if you are not running the right set they will stretch I use the Cloyes Race Billet sets in setup similar to yours. If the chain stretches depending on how much compression you have predation can be a problem and I will tear the engine up. I like the AED carbs these engine love the gas
Great content, Really enjoyed your delivery! What did the heads cc out at? I was looking at the 65cc version for my combo. Keep up the great work, cool build!
Compression is the secret to power. As far as anyone recommending a set of heads, you must remember that an engine is a 'combination' deal, and as such, without substantial details of the rest of the engine specifications it's impossible for anyone to recommend a set of heads. The best source for EXCELLENT educational material is David Vizard's publications available through your high performance shop. He is regarded as the guru in the small block Chevy
Seems like a Kool dude,,, if I was working at Intel in Portland I would try to look him up and bullshit about motors HP etc. And I hit like an thumbs up lol
Just a side note, in a small block Chevy, once the valves lift .600 off the seat, any further lift will not achieve any additional flow. This is per David Vizard's statement. However, with a larger rocker ratio the valves will lift off the seat quicker giving the engine better flow on the overlap. Nice build, have fun with it.
i think there might be something missing from that statement because there are small block with well over .600 lift and make 800-900 HP out of 440 inches...
Hey man I love the channel! I appreciate the info you are putting out there also. I've always had a love for hot rods, but I'm just now getting started on one for myself. So I'm just wondering with that horsepower combo what kind of times and speed do you see and do you run 1/8 or 1/4? Thanks!
@@ordinaryguygarage3667 wow great work. this street g body with a 396 just ran a 12.46 at 110 on here so i cannot imagine yours, its more streetable as you were saying you got O.672" lift, that = maintenance right there, or some spring changes if you want to drive on the street a lot, i like pump gas daily drivers with some kick, that is why i like to swim around the 12's, thanks for your awesome engine video 🙂
Very impressive Power numbers I’m curious of the compression that you wound up with and are they flat top pistons or dome and what was the cc or if you happen to have the part number for the Pistons? thanks scott
Like looking in the mirror bud lol, I love to put my own engines together, I have an 88 foxbody and have been 10.50s so far with a 347 turbo setup, now I've put a 363 with 88mm turbo and can't wait to see how this one runs
wow! i am building a 374 cubic inch daily driver pump gas engine. its 302 based and looks like a 302 when it is done, i am getting the dart large bore 302 for it and finish bore to 4.185" and the deck at 8.2" , it has 302 mains with 4 bolt mains, its just for a daily driver street car. 5.4" rods, 3.4" stroke, would be a 347 in a stock 302 block. The piston is an inch and barely something so there you go, it may not like boost as i am going with a 2618 low expansion , kind of like a hypereutectic piston i guess, but the modern take on a hyper forging, its good material others say, or a mahle piston, well i think that is the piston i am shall use, it shall have pump gas and good drivability so not big power, yet shall be great in a daily driver N/A. Plan on using trick flow R series heads, probably the 180-200cc runners instead of the 170 but who knows yet, with a smallish hydraulic or even small solid roller cam. and a 5 speed and 8.8 rear end. could go into a pinto, any mustang , or even camaro or whatever, i would like to put it into a vette, any camaro, 67-69 firebird or factory five 65 or 32 coupe also.
I had A old intake like this......about 13 years ago ran with a big tall chrome 😅 thermostat housing****** I turned her to the moon*** had 820 proforma ,,,,Proforma HEI 😅😅😅😊😊😊
Our engines are wthin a few deg. of being identical. I st drive mine all the time doesnt buck jerk nothing .I think I am gonna try it locked out....Heads arent quite as good as yours...if I made 560 Id be real happy. Had a set of new 220s and had to sell due to health Nice to know 600 isnt far off.
Nice video and SBC, Im working on a Gen 2 LT1 350. It wont make that much power though. Its going in a driver. I was thinking I might need a 4 bolt main but my 2 bolt will be just fine, I'll be under 400 hp when its done. Thanks
great build ......looking to build something simular for a nova street car ....can you get a roller cam that could make about same number give or take..?..
Do you mean hydraulic roller? I'm sure you can find something very similar to the solid roller in this motor. It might not have the rpm capability though.... I'd call comp cams and ask them... the part number for this cam is 12-908-9 to use a reference
Right on being safe out there driving all the time.been driving when I got out of the army in the 1982 off and on still doing it, so being safe I am. I had a bad month last year and month December the 7 my 18 year old out of three boys, he left to go to work two miles from house hit a semi truck head on he died. not truck drivers fault, he’s ok just a broke leg. then my father is die ing with pancreatic cancer he has maybe a month, and then my brothers wife died the 30 of December all in one month. so trying hard to get through it all, waiting on autopsy to see why my son hit the semi head on. He was a good son, every much like, turned 18 July 25 2021 . Got him a pickup truck 2008 4 wheel drive dodge, he started at 14 with the firefighter department. he loved helping people, well I let you know a little of me what I am going through and so I’ll see ya next time see ya bye bye.
i got a 450 hp 454 steel crank heavy rods high flow heads with a 02xx 400r turbo last year i got 4 set ups for free with 6,000 to 58,000 miles on them. found out what they put them in and i have been a fat kid in a candy store looking for everyone i can find. i do a lot of chevy and ford builds even got a 428 crate engine for free for my 70 high boy. but it had over a 100,000 on it so i will rebuild it and no paper work on it
ps u live in oregon do u like to buy good project rigs i have a few rust free square body trucks i live outside of bend. plus i know where a lot of rigs are. i just turned down a 68 chevelle ss 396 engine is apart but good rust free body nice and clean for 3500 and a 64 chevy 2 needs engine very good body for 1200 but they went fast . i run into things all the time.
Love the video! Very informative! My combination is literally almost identical to yours aside from the stroke.(mine has a stock 3.48). The only part you left out was, what was the static compression ratio? Great engine build bud!
@@ordinaryguygarage3667 Unfortunately, i never dyno'd mine before i put it in my truck. I have 11cc dome pistons in my 357 making it 13:1 as well. Looking forward to watching more of your vids
I am interested in valve-train above the cam. I would think that It would be critical to making this work, especially since HP is not dropping at the highest rpm of the test. Excellent job in matching affordable parts.
@@andrewkelly1225 thank you! I spent quite a bit of brain time on the part selection, in particular the valve train. I'm really happy with how it came out
