I am surprised to that Mario Lanza is not in the list of the 66 tenor to me to he was the best of everyone
@sugarbist
@sugarbist 4 года назад
imo, Lanza had a beautiful tenor voice, as good or better than any tenor in history. He seemed to have unlimited potential, and inspired many young singers to pursue professional career's. Opera was also made more popular through his Hollywood movies. However the operatic stage did elude Lanza, and he is not considered a traditional opera singer, neither performing complete studio recordings and only singing 2 performances of Butterfly when he was 27 or 28 years old. Maybe the poster should have given Lanza an honorable inclusion, but I'm not sure.
@robertsmale3714
@robertsmale3714 4 года назад
sugarbist thanks for the comments I only posted what I read in a couple of sources. They said discussions were on going for him to make complete recordings of operas and to perform on the opera stage in Roma. As per the temperament now that doesn’t surprise me. Typical of so many performers and “divas”. Regardless it doesn’t take away from the beauty and richness of his voice. His excesses are well known and were instrumental in his untimely death.

Lanza had perhaps the greatest tenor voice, but tragically he went for Hollywood fame rather than aspiring to operatic contributions.
@sugarbist
@sugarbist Год назад
@@shirleyrombough8173 Hollywood fame and 1 million$ a movie. Perhaps the tenors in the 1950s were being paid 1 to 5 thousand a performance plus traveling and hotel expenses. The operatic stage is also a different animal from the studio. Duets, terzettos, quartets, while appearing in costume and arriving on time. I don't know how accurate it is , but I read that Lanza had stage fright which can also weigh heavy on a singer, Corelli and Aragall suffered through stage fright even between acts when they were doing very well. Lanza did have a gorgeous voice,
@peterholwill1170

I agree with you 100% Snobbery of the operatic world. He had a beautiful spinto tenor voice, a natural musicality amd will be remembered years after many of the less famous tenors on the list. Odd Andrea Bocelli is on the list, not in the same class as Lanza and certainly does not belong with the likes of Bjoriling, Corelli, Domingo, Pavarotti, Caruso, Gigl to mention just a few.

Lanza made his career in movies bypassing the legit opera stage. Whenever we saw Lanza singing in a movie, it was with the benefit of being recorded in a studio with all the advantages of sound reproduction. He does not belong in a class with the great tenors who went in front of an audience, putting it all on the line live every night.

I would add Kurt Baum. He is somewhat underrated and totally forgotten figure on MET stage today. While I think that Baum was really great and attention drawing singer right before Monaco arrival. In top tough roles of course. He could not sing Nemorino. Had a strong sharply addressing voice. Some did not like it, but I do not care. I would compare Baum with Tamagno. Similar style of singing. I am not a voice specialist. Just write what I think is right.

Piotr (Peter) Beczala is already 52. You know very well what it means for a singer who is very busy not only at the MET but especially on German and Austrian stages performing both, operas and solo concertos with orchestra and piano… Jonas Kaufmann is almost 50 and.... We need to find the next generation of singers. Opera cannot disappear. Must not...

Operatic tenors - but great to see Ian Bostridge in the list - the great interpreter of the Bach Passions. Although not too sure about Peter Pears, whose voice was one you either love or hate. Got a huge leg up from his partner Benjamin Britten.

A ridiculous list. Apart from that, some dates are not correct and Peter Pears is introduced with a picture of Ian Bostridge. And including Klaus Florian Vogt in this list is almost a crime.

This list lacks major tenors: Aureliano Pertile (1885-1952), Mario Filippeschi (1907-1979), Daniele Barioni (1930-2022), Gianfranco Cecchele (1938-2018), Franco Bonisolli (1938-2003). Why Mario Lanza (1921-1959) is left out of this list? Certainly he did not sing operas on stage but still had a most beautiful voice than many of the tenors on this list! Why variety Music Singer Bocelli Is In this list?

Marc Roland. When making your comment, you needed to write " in my opinion" .You needed to write also that, "most likely, my opinion.differs from most of others". Furthermore, you have to write " I believe, that am not a God, but still, I believe that Lanza' s voice is the loudest".

Reason often makes mistakes, but consciousness never. * Caruso (not much to explain) * next to Caruso, a forgotten voice Fernando De Lucia * Francesco Tamagno (the first Othello: clear and ringing, not like the gloomy moors to which we later approached. It was so big in the part that Caruso gave up the part for fear of confrontation) * Giovanni Martinelli (drammatico verdiano; un Othello gloomy, per intenderci) * Giacomo Lauri-Volpi (he sang La Pira Col do naturale until he was 80 years old) * Aureliano Pertile (very classic Tuscan tenor, great in lyrical and dramatic roles) * Tito Schipa (Nemorino as others never, light but intense, unattainable, the initial model of Pavarotti) * Benjamin lilies (as Caruso: nullum par elogium) * Lauritz Melchior (Danish, transferred not to Kansassity as the character of the Deaf, but to the Met of N. York: Wagnerian heroic and mighty) * Peter Anders (German, great in both Teutonic and italic) From the late forties to the late seventies (the Golden Age) * Mario Del Monaco (almost all Italian or similar, even the Duke of Mantua: great Andrea Chènier but especially Otello. It had, for this role, the two following the same deterrent effect that Tamagno exerted on Caruso. Knappertsbusch wanted him as Tristan, and God knows what it would be) * Franco Corelli (another huge heldentenor, that Poliuto, that Calaf, that Manrico, but above all that Pollione in the norm and that unmatched Don Jose in Carmen. The best Cavaradossi for callasian histrionics) * Jussi Bjoerling (perhaps even larger than the other two as musicality; Swedish. Calaf, Pinkerton. Think that in these days you could hear a Troubadour in which he sang in Italian, and like God above the clouds, and the others in Swedish. Too much brandy, or snapps) * Giuseppe Di Stefano (as a young man, row the chest of Salut demeure from the Faust of Gounod to the Met; then sing a Manon of Massenet from night nightmares. The best Turiddu, the Edgardo of Lucia callasiana, Arturo in the Puritans, Alfredo in Traviata. He's dead now, and no one got out of it, he thinks). * Fritz Wunderlich (a German of wide repertoire, great Tamino in the flute and Supreme liederist, but able to replace in the Wagnerian repertoire also … * ... Wolfgang Windgassen (Tristan, Lohengrin, Tannhaeuser) * Carlo Bergonzi (conterraneo di Verdi) sang in the theatre all 27 roles of tenor Verdi, except, guess, Othello, which he did behind closed doors in concert form. Miller's best Rodolfo, a creepy Ernani, Radames, Cavaradossi. He was a boy and Bruno Walter called him for the Requiem). * Peter Schreier (Mozart, Mozart, Mozart; he also directs) * Alfredo Kraus (a great vocal phenomenon. Among the Three Tenors he was supposed to be, you decide which of the others to hunt; he died with this magone. Werther for life) Contemporary: * Placido Domingo (I think he has about 150 career roles, even Bajazet by Vivaldi. Not much to add . It's the only Othello since Del Monaco) * Josè Carreras (a great promise: then, the singing explained and throat to Di Stefano was cracking. Leukemia, which he defeated, did the rest. A great Don Carlo under Karajan) * Luciano Pavarotti (great things, like Rodolfo in Bohème, the Duke and Nemorino; other poor things, like Don Carlo. Other indecent, like duets with sugar. But he did honor to us, the italians) * Juan Diego Florez (it is today the most extraordinary lyric-light: Mozart, Rossini. He will become a lyricist driven by the years. Let's hope it lasts, vocally I mean) * Marcelo Alvarez (Tony Dallara screamer, mezzo immensi, verdiano). Already falling. Marcelo don't scream, I even told you from a third-order stage in a Miller) * Rockwell Blake (a freak phenomenon in the Donizetti / Rossini repertoire. He pulls a C and holds it after returning to fifth). I would add CARLO COSSUTTA

Just to add my own 2 cents...Lauritz Melchior, Helge Rosvaenge, Marcel Wittrisch, Aureliano Pertile, Heddle Nash, Jan Kiepura all deserved note as great tenors from the past. That puts us at 72+...and we could add Mario Lanza since you didn't specify opera performers and he certainly had a great tenor voice. Always fun to create a list and then have the unseen mob begin tacking on.:)
