Gary - would you agree that the converter issues on these is not just the under-engineered converter itself, but also the TCC lockup strategy having lockup from 2nd all the way up? Way too much stress on the converter. You're probably aware of a colleague of yours who goes into the software and disables lockup on, I think, 2nd and 3rd. He does some other things too.
@@GaryFerraro That's the easy part. The harder part, as some builders are tackling, is WHY. One builder with high visibility on uTube does not sell a 6L80 rebuild without addressing the root problem, which is the bad TCC lockup strategy.
So i never had a problem with my trucks transmission since i bought it but yesterday i was hauling a trailer and my rpm went up and down on there own and then the rpms stayed at 5000 with me going no were.i pulled over and checked the fluid it looked dark and a tad bit low but no burnt smell..i threw a quart in it and drove it for 5 mins and then a check engine light turned on reading p0700..so i went to the auto parts store and took the old oil out and filter and put both new.i drove the truck for a few mins but its still doing the same thing...and now its also has a new code p0796 sayn the pcs solenoid is stuck off and after driving the truck the transmission oil got hot and smells burnt now it stayed T 5000 rpm and i was only going 45 50 miles per hour...so i took everything apart again..i did have very small metallic shavings on the magnet but no chunks..do you think its the TEHCM.. Or do you think i should replace the transmission
I rebuilt the pressure switches on my tehcm because the plastic pieces were all broken. It shifts better but is still shifting harder than usual on the first shift. Am I supposed to do any reprogramming after the pressure switch rebuild?
Nathan Brown Do you have access to a Tech II scanner or Solus? You can initiate a relearn after getting the trans up to 150 (or was it 165 degrees F?). There is a RU-vid video on this somewhere.
I have a quick question if you don’t mind? What is the ideal operating temperature of these 6l80 trans? My truck has a “thermostat” that wants to keep the fluid above *180/*190. Why is that? Should I bypass it with the sure cool kit from global transmissions? I always thought cooler was better? Please advise. Thank you for your time.
Gary, appreciate the the video, very helpful. I rebuilt my 6L80 in November, it all worked great and still does except for one thing. After it gets hot and you stop at a stop sign, when you let off the break it won’t roll, it seems as though it’s in neutral. if you wait it will go back in gear, if you give it a little gas it will jump in gear. It doesn’t do it all the time. I assumed it was the torque converter due to the symptoms, I changed it this week but it still does it. What do you think it is? It will do it in revers sometimes also.
Hi Gary! quick question! 2011 Chevy Silverado, when slowing down the transmission has a hard downshift from 2nd to 1st. i already replaced the valvebody with a Sonnax rebuilt valve body and the problem still remains. any suggestions?
@@GaryFerraro Thanks for the speedy response! Putting the 6L80e behind an LC9 5.3 that’s going in a Land Rover Defender 90 that’s going to St. Thomas, USVI, so very steep hills & low speeds. What upgrades to the transmission do you recommend?
Great stuff. I just purchased a complete drivetrain from an escalade L92 6.2 and 6l80e for a project. I need to change the output from 4wd to 2wd which as far as I can tell requires a full disassembly. It has 138,000 miles and drove excellent before it came out. I've watched every 6l80/6l90 video I can find on youtube. It will be my first auto trans rebuild but I'm pretty meticulous. I'm thinking about the Sonnax zip kit, billet aluminum 1-4 piston, HD 4-5-6 apply Piston kit, line pressure kit, and hd pump slide spring. Any thoughts or input?
Trans does have to come apart to change out the output shaft, pump is part of the bellhousing, make sure it's nice and smooth, i always used the o-ring end plug kit by sonnax. Makesure the pressure switches are in good shape
Hello Mr. Ferraro , so I had 6l80e with 1-2 harsh shifting at low speed only is it related to line pressure valve or the end plugs need to be upgraded for sonnax or transgo with the oil seal . Thanks
@@AhmedMohamed-hk3io may want to confirm how line pressure is, if ok, may have a stuck compensator feed reg valve in the lower section of the valvebody
Gary..For the 1234 3-5 Reverse housing...it shows an o-ring for the reverse piston and 1 for the balance piston...but..I do not see where the first one(reverse piston) goes..can you share insight for me?... I dont even remember it coming out of my old one..
Question man, ive got my valve body tore down and im trying to replace the valves in the valve body. I am having trouble getting the tcc valve out. Do you have any advice to get this thing out?
@@GaryFerraro had code p0741 ordered the sonnax zip kit. Comes with new tcc valve. The old one moved about 1/4 inch give or take and that was it. I'm afraid I messed up the valve body trying to get it out. Thought maybe it had turned in the slot. Tried to get it to turn and just ate into the valve.. There was some metal dust in the pan. Little bit of actual flakes that you could tell were metal by feel. Replacing the torque converter, flex plate, rebuilding valve body and replacing filter. I had a line blow off the radiator a few weeks back lost 3/4s of the fluid.
@@GaryFerraro yes I got the clutch valves out and the one next to the tcc valve. The just slid right out pretty much. I used a 90° a 45° and even tried a flat head to no avail on the tcc valve. Only one that gave me any problems.
o-ring end plug kit, 104740-23 Pressure switch rebuild kit or if you need the tooling you will need the master kit Rebuild kit124740-30K Master rebuild kit124740-28K. I'm sorry I do use the transgo Pressure regulator drop in valve part # 6L8-VL-PR3
Please tell me you can help me. I've lost one of the 4 10mm head bolts that bolts the rim to the valve body. Mine seems to be a M6 head but the shaft is .8 or M5. Dealer doesn't even ha e a part number for that. Where can I get it?
@@spinn71 I was going to say to get the thread size and just pick up another bolt somewhere, i buy parts from transtar but i don't think they would have the bolt either
How can I go contacting you, have ?'s about my 42RLE transmission. Driving at 40mp it starts shudder, an it goes away over that. Can it be my transmission? It has 150,00 miles.
When around 40ish mph it feels like running over a rumble strip on side of a freeway, once pass 40 mph it go away. if I have OD off it don't seem to do it.
I don't know how to thank you for this videos really big hate boss So i had a problem in my 2008 cts4 switch pressure i did replace the small plastic in the TEHCM i replace the filtre and when i finish my car doesn't want to start i recognize that the problem come from the starter so i jump it from the relay and finally the car start but now the car doesn't move in reverse no neutral in the cluster shows just Drive in all tge position and just goes forward it shift perfectly no more problem with the pressure i can't find whats exactly please sir if you can help me with that issue i'm not a professionnelle thanks so much
Could you show me whats exactly pleaaase i know that something internal that i forget to do properly could you help me to know whats exactly royalmazagan@gmail.com thanks

A bit late but a question for you. I have a 09 Pontiac G8 w the 6l80. Trans shifts hard from Park, has a 2 second delay to Drive, and has a kick to 2nd gear, then some slipping. Drives fine on the highway, trouble only when city driving. Did 1st trans change at 90k miles, fluid was clean no apparent shavings. Did 2 more fluid changes and am at 115k miles. No check engine light. I have had this problem since the first fluid change. What could be my issue? Thanks
Sure this is full? check the fluid when car is hot, Look at both sides of the stick, if one side reads lower that is the true reading, always go with the lower side
I’m having an issue with my 2008 bmw 335i E92 from what I’ve researched online my car has the 6hp26 the car has a hard shift going from 2 to 3 but now I have another problem the transmission is slipping my rpm will rise but will not accelerate and will throw a “transmission fault” code and it is struggling to move as if the clutch was out like in a manual (I have an automatic I’m just comparing) I have a new pan and filter new sealing sleeve plug along with the rectangular plastic plug and the 4 sealing sleeves that are under the valve body as well but could it be the valve body solenoids? Not everything else? regardless I’m still going to be doing all this but would new solenoids most likely be my issue so I can go ahead and get new ones as well? or could the symptoms be of something completely different? Also have not scanned for codes If you need more details I could possibly provide more thanks you!!!
Gary Ferraro I have a “Cobb access port” for tunning purposes and does read codes but I don’t believe that it reads transmission codes, but when ever it would throw the transmission fault code on my display was when it would slip and reach or be close to redline and would only keep me in one gear and I would use my access port to clear the code and the transmission would run normally again with the hard shift and occasionally slip but it has gotten worst and now will slipping in 1st with little to no move meant unless I’m super gentle on the gas so it grabs And what is a good tool to check for trans codes?
