The escalade had no reverse hot, I go through the teardown and find the 1-4/3,5,R drum cracked, a very common problem

Subscribed!!! Gary, your videos are very well done and educational! I am an auto tech, but have not rebuilt many automatic transmissions. I am currently rebuilding a 6l90e. I saw the tsb on this, but don't remember it mentioning the 1-4 apply piston, thanks for the tip. I did the air test, and yep, cracked drum! also watched your vids about tecm switches and valve body. You sir saved me and my customer time and money. Thank you for this great channel!

Wow, very informative for us 6l80e owners. I've blown a few of mine over time, along with engines and diffs. Drum cracking is interesting. Thanks for taking the time and posting. I had a full rebuild and new TECUM unit completed about 8 months ago and it's playing up berko already; and I feel its the pump or drum causing the problem as the shifts change a lot from one minute to another. This time around I'm inclined to go Circle D multi clutch billet converter too. I swear my Aussie made converter is problematic since day one. You have no idea of my frustration on this matter

Great video. Our 2010 Tahoe w/ 6L80 lost all forward gears this morning. Reverse is strong. Did this one other time last week at a stop light but eventually kicked in enough to bark the tires. Does this sound like a stuck #1 check ball? What else should I replace while I have the valve body out? Gaskets & all balls? I didn't see where you disassembled the valve body to go over the separator plate. Thanks!

My transmission acts like it is slipping if I kick it down or roll on the gas to hard or fast and it shifts hard sometimes from first to second sometimes from second to third I MEAN HARD LIKE TO THE POINT OF ME WORRYING ABOUT IT BREAKING SOMETHING. Anyone know if a shift cylinoid, a filter needing replaced, or the torque converter would cause this???? I hope I dont have to have the whole thing rebuilt. Fluid is full and looks and smells good. This shop has been in my family for 51 years. My dad opened the shop in 1967. He passed 6 years ago. He taught me transfer cases, manual transmissions and differentials. Back in the 80's he was partners in a shop in florida, i went there for 2 years to learn tearing down and rebuilding. The shop in New York at the time was very high volume(10 cars within 30 minutes of opening each morning) so i really couldn't learn the way i wanted to, the shop in Florida was new and a much slower with business, so i was able to learn. When my dad could he would fly down and work with me about the operation of a transmission, i didnt want to just be a parts changer, i wanted to learn how they work so i could troubleshoot . I never been to Australia, have you ever visited New York?

Gary my dad was a underground coal miner all his life, he passed away at the age of 52 years he had a massive heart attack, I still miss him, dad was what you would call a jack of all trades but a master of none.I have never been to the u.s. as yet I just never seem to have the time after I finished my teck. training a mate of mine (a mechanic) and I leased a oil company service station for 5 years mainly for the workshop space that was all good we had a great business, but got sick of dealing with the public (some people you just can no please)so next stage of my working life I worked for cummins diesel (u.s. company) doing field service for 3 years I enjoyed doing that, and then into the trucking game and stayed doing that for most of my working life.I don't think it matters what trade any one gets into as long as you enjoy what you are doing, going to work every day is a pleasure.Gary I wanted to ask you what you would pay for a low mileage Gm.. 6l80e trans. in the u.s. I think I will buy a second hand one and rebuild it, give me some thing to do and stay out of my wife's way.regards mark.

Gary awesome video. I'm quite a novice but I've a question. My Tahoe goes through all the gears but it's a bit harsh in down shifting, especially the low gears. Sometimes if I'm slowing down to a stop it even stars bucking. It's also jerky when taking off from a stop. I was thinking the pressure control solenoid could use replacing even though I'm not getting any check engine light. What do you think? Also can that solenoid be replaced by just dropping the pan? Thank so much. Zach
@GaryFerraro
@GaryFerraro 8 лет назад
+UFZach35 Even though you have no check engine light, have you had it scanned? still may be a code causing an increase in line pressure. The solenoid is not serviced seperatly, you would have to buy the entire assembly which includes the solenoids, switches and computer, then it would have to be programmed once installed. Gary
@UFZach35
@UFZach35 8 лет назад
+Gary Ferraro thanks for the info! Yes I've had it scanned at AutoZone and no codes come up, but however regarding the transmission I've heard that sometimes the dealers code reader can be more intricate and find other stuff? Not sure about this anyway thanks for the help

Gary Ferraro thank you for the fast reply! Was not expecting it so soon . 😀 I was reading the other day that transmissions and engine builders are a dying art . I’m a diesel mechanic for a living and build all sorts of different engines and build Eaton transmissions as well .every dealership has gotten so set on remans that you’re really not even a mechanic you’re a parts changer and as a father there’s nothing to be proud of and pass down to be a glorified parts changer . I first got interested in building small automatics owning all gm products and was tired of paying 12 ,1300 $ for something that I knew I could teach myself to do . So I hit up scrap yards and buy different styles of transmissions for scrap price weight and tear it down and diagnose and put it back together until I figure it out . I apologize for the life story but really appreciate guys that put videos out to show the d.i.y. and self starters

Gary Ferraro have you got an email sir . That is bad ! It’s hard for me to be proud of saying yeah I swapped that part out I’d rather say yes sir I built that transmission oh bout 5 yrs ago lol. I hope half of what I typed made since lol my fingers and brain start getting out of sync . The 4l60 I built yesterday and installed in a 01 1500 the planetary set behind low reverse sprag stripped the gear on the gear for sun-shell. Before ever tearing it apart I already told myself well the sunshell broke or stripped. I’m glad I didn’t place a bet on it , cause I would have lost lol , but same symptoms.

Gary, since I have seen you reply to every comment, I thought I would try my luck with an online diagnosis. My 6l80e flares shifting into fourth, fifth and sixth, eventually shifting into neutral while I'm driving, displaying engine light and going into limp mode (second or third gear) I also noticed a grinding sound as I drove the car back home (and haven't used it since) It reports the following codes P0777 - Powertrain Pressure Control Solenoid "B" Stuck On P2724 - Powertrain Pressure Control Solenoid E Stuck On P0700 - Powertrain Tranmission Control System (MIL Request) Could this be the 4, 5, 6 clutch drum, or do i need to replace the (very expensive) pressure control solenoids

Again, very good info. I've left comments on another video of yours.I have the 2006 STS V that started shifting funny. Reset the trans controller and it was fine for a while. Started shifting funny last sunday, got codes for the pressure switches which I will rebuild this weekend. Where did you get the snap ring pliers incase I have to pull it and rebuild?

Yes the large ones you used to remove the large snap ring in the case. Intention is to rebuild switches this weekend. Can I air test for a cracked 1-2-3-4 & 3-5 Drum when I pull the valve body?
@GaryFerraro
@GaryFerraro 6 лет назад
The big pliers are from a company called adapt-a-case. You can air check the unit with the valvebody out, would be hard to see if the drum is cracked. When dealing with a cracked drum may have a very bad slip in reverse and a 2-3 slip, normally this happens hot.
@drloch6174
@drloch6174 6 лет назад
Thank You, found them online. I deal with hydraulic systems for a living and we have some units that have large snap ring on them. Don't have any slipping issues cold or hot. I will set all the trans tables back to stock when I repair the pressure switches and will be replacing the check balls, separator plate, valve body seals plate and few other items. I'll let you know the results. Taking the time to answer my questions.
@drloch6174
@drloch6174 6 лет назад
Just to follow up. I rebuilt the switches, but it didn't totally fix the issues. I was still getting random codes of different issues. Where I went from there was I got a rebuilt TECHUM from Dorman, my car called for a 609-004. I replaced the TECHUM and did a relearn with HPTuners which is the same as the GM relearn with a Tech 2, which I also have. Car shifted great on the test drive. I didn't shift as smooth as it does now since I bought it a year ago. Next issue was a pulsating of TCC when locked up most noticeable at highway speeds going up a hill. It would lock up and then slightly release and then lockup again. That is something in the GM code that others have had issues with. I fixed that in HPTuners, now all is good. Thanks for letting me bounce things off of you, you've been a big help. As is the case most of the time you never hear what fixed the issues so I thought I would share what worked for me. Thanks again.

hello, I have a 2009 Silverado with the 4l60e. I have 176k miles on the truck and I know sooner or later the trans is going to go out, I plan to run the trans until it does but once it does go out I would like to swap it for the 6 speed 6l80 in order to get better fuel mileage on the highway. how hard will this be to do, will I need a different TCM, etc?

I mean I would think something would be possible at least, I think worst case scenario you swap the computer, pull the old TCM and swap the transmission and hook everything up. I know they offered this transmission as an option back then so there has to be a computer out there for my truck that will run the TCM of this one won't.

Have 2007 GMC Yukon Denali with 6L80E with 182,000 miles and after trans flush/fill about 10,000 miles ago it's developed a delayed shift from 3-4. All other shifts seem fine. Sometimes it shifts fine but maybe after it's been warm. If I lift off throttle before shifting to 4th then it's a smooth shift. I haven't checked for codes (not sure where I'd get that done). Hello Gary I'm building my 6l80e that abruptly lost drive and reverse after some flareup in the 2-3 shift. I tore it down and found it had a cracked upper drum, the PR valve was stuck wide open, the 1234 and 3/5 reverse clutches were black and looked smoked and it had some steel and aluminum in the pan and magnet. I ordered a complete loaded drum with piston and 1234 3/5 reverse clutches and the 2011 upgraded pump cover, also I got the transgo shift kit with upgraded valves. My concern is my front bellhousing has some wear/grooves on the face of it where the ring rides that supports the pump vanes. I had some aluminum flakes in the trans and its coming from the bellhousing face under where the pump rides. How big of a problem is this? Can I still run that bellhousing and get good sealing or will it be a problem. I'm on a budget/hurry, but need it to be right and already ordered and almost received all my other parts and upgrades.

Hi Gary I had a 1-4/3,5,R drum cracked in my 6l80, and replaced it. Now all symptoms have gone away all gears are normal, except there is a delay taking reverse. Once it takes reverse after 3-5 seconds it does not slip at all. Is this a valvebody problem?
@GaryFerraro
@GaryFerraro 7 лет назад
Hello, First thing to try is a fast learn through the a scan tool, that may fix it. Also if there are any codes present in the system they must be cleared so the trans can adapt. The adaption process takes place when the trans is above 130F and no codes are present. Thanks for watching, please subscribe. Gary

I dunno why I always thought the 6L80E was a modified 4L80E. Its completely different. Is that bellhousing different than a standard old SBC? Do you think that transmission is heavier duty than a 4L80E?

Gary Ferraro I would love to have a 6 speed in my custom project but the 4l80e is the minimum strength I would want. I think PCS has a kit for the 4L80E to make it a 6 speed. Takes a gear change and a valve body change to do it right. Kinda spendy. Been waiting to see how others seem to like it and how it holds up for the long haul. Maybe next time I did into my project Ill do that. Cheaper than trying to get an Allison to fit. :)

Thanks for the video, now i got the hot temp on my sierra 2500hd with 6l90 transmission from the first start the temp will increase until 105deg c but by traffic jam it will reach 120deg c where the car stop go stop go condition. After experienced the clutch stuck on 2nd gear, i bring the car to the garage for overhauling the transmission, change the clutch and still experience the same hot temp (reach 138deg c on the highway and cooling down when the car on and the gear on neutral) check the cooler line, pump everything is ok, now the mechanic ask to change the tehcm. i dont want to waste the money for some expensive part that not the main problem. only when it reaches 138deg c it shows on the information center to idle the engine while the trans overheat, when i still keep running the line bar on the trans position gone on the information center so i dont know whether it is on D, M, N, when i keep running it stuck on 2nd gear and has an erratic sound when changing from 1st and 2nd then big sound coming from the tranny and it is disconnected from the engine, whenever i give throttle the gear was not giving any reaction. On that time the code shows that the torque converter lost or slip while i forgot the code number, i brought to the garage and the overhauling the tranny with changing all the clutch, filter, oil, check the cooler line, pump, torque converter and reinstall the tranny. During the test the mechanical issue was solved only the trans temp still remain the same (reaching 136deg c read from the information center) stop the car with idle engine and gear on neutral position, the temp slowly down, put the gear to drive and drive the car again the temp increase until 125deg c then stop and re open the tranny. check oil condition still good, no debris from the clutch and they decided to change the tehcm but i am not sure that the tehcm is the hot temp issue
