Short clips in colour showing some of the production touring cars in the race, which was divided into four classes depending on price. This was the first '500' held at Bathurst. The previous three '500's had been held at Phillip Island in Victoria and the race would remain at the Mountain and evolve into the 1000 (due to conversion to kilometres). The top three outright winners were from Class C. Bob Jane and Harry Firth won in a Ford Cortina GT, in second place was Ralph Sach and Fred Morgan in a Holden EH S4, third in another Ford Cortina GT was Bruce McPhee and Graham Ryan.

I watched this while researching EH Holdens. My son has a restored EH wagon with 15 inch jelly bean mags, decent sized roll bars , 4 speed, HR front end and a nice warmed over motor. He didn't want a perfectly original one, feeling that he'd like mods that we'd have wanted to fit if we'd had it new. It was so easy back then to transform an old Holden into something much more roadworthy and trackworthy. As it is now it moves along with modern traffic easily, and just as easily at motorway speeds.

comparing these cars to racers of only 10 years later - it must have been the biggest performance change in the history of Aussie racing. Like the music of the time actually - the early 60s pop was incomparable to the choices we had 10 years later. We'd lost our naivety.

VW Beetle won and took 5 out of first 8 places in its Class A. Its interesting to note that the other 3 places were taken by car of which its design was the complete opposite to that of the Beetle. I wouldnt have liked to drive a Beetle through the esses.

Absolutely! Only the very brave or the plumb crazy could ever have contemplated wrestling with the old Dak Dak from Skyline down to Conrod. This gets truly frightening when you can recall what was stuck to the 4 corners of those old VeeWees. . . 15 inch pram wheels with 3 inch wide (nothing WIDE about them!) rock hard crossply diet tyres! Heading off with a full tank AT THE FRONT of the rollypoly bug would had been one tragedy & then, as the tide went out in the no baffle tank, all sorts of "crabs" would have pulled her very light nose left & right from corner to corner & that sensation would be no doubt disturbing. I never could get comfortable in a car that ruptured it's fuel tank & erupted into a huge bonfire after the unweighted front tyres skidded & you belted whatever was stopped in front of you. Running one at Bathurst was borderline insanity & even though Group N Historics have enjoyed 40 years of replicating what went on in the '60s, I haven't seen a single Volksy front up in Group N... EVER! They were generally pretty reliable if not wierd & a fair swarm of them did hit Bathurst on the day. With a very light weight all aluminium engine & gearbox, it isn't too surprising they figured well in the results... Imagine trying to get the old Bosch 6volt starter to crank one over after 50 odd laps with the psychotic tangled exhaust glowing red hot in under that aircooled gokart engine!. . . and they had to turn those engines off every time they came in for fuel! The drivers were probably instructed to do 20 cool down laps before the fuel guage hit rock bottom? Luckily, there are some fabulous bits of footage showing the old VeeWee doing battle at Bathurst still surviving, otherwise NO ONE IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD BELIEVE ANYONE WAS CRAZY ENOUGH TO TRY IT.

@@johnbrooks9523 I wonder if these races combined with the Redex and Ampol round Australia trials significantly dictated world sales of VW's....They were hugely successful during these trials and the whole of Australia turned out to see them.. Crowds of 250,000 people showed up to great these extremely brave contestants . Many Legends were born out of these races 'Gelignite Jack' Murray and Laurie Whitehead, Bob Foreman, Ray Christie and Joe Dunlop to name a few.......Then the very first Japanese cars appeared on the scene.. A Crown Toyopet (Toyota)... Incredible history given the war had only finished only a decade earlier....

The modestly dressed, well behaved spectators. No sign yet of the yobbos and bogans that would take over the mountain.

that came with the sex, drugs and rock'n'roll culture of the late 60s onward I think. Rebellion took over

Amazing - racing a FB Holden. Really ??? Why would you do that ?? Mini's and Cortinas would have got my money.

My 1st Car was exactly like that Pink Grey FB Holden. Pretty crappy but gave me freedom at 18 years of age.
