Walkthrough video from start to finish of diagnosing a bad injector on Ford 7.3 Powerstroke. Discussion of functions and logic of what can and cannot go wrong, what you might see on your scanner that has nothing to do with the true problem or even the bad injector. One bad injector can make several look bad in a contribution test, how to ohms test your injectors and using a heat gun to find the bad cylinder.

Good job. Doesn't it drive you nuts that the bad injector didn't fail the contribution test. I had a similar problem, black smoke, no power, couldn't get over 1600 hpop psi. Lucky for me the cylinder that failed the contribution test was the bad injector (buzz test sounded off on that cyl too). Changed all the o rings on that side and put in an old injector for now. Smoke is gone, psi & power is back. I suspect it was stuck open. Next time I'll also check the injector tip for cracks. Interesting that you had black then white smoke.
@bryanbuilt360
@bryanbuilt360 2 месяца назад
Sure does sound like one of the injectors was stuck open. Probably on the oil side. Did you ever run it with the valve cover open to see what was coming out of the spout? Appreciate your comments. I have another injector video when I replaced the ones and diagnosing that was a nightmare!

Hey man, glad you could identify the sound through the video. Do you know for sure you have a bad fuel pump? Can you check fuel pressure at the bowl while running? If the injectors run at lower pressures it can damage the tip of the injector. So if fuel pump is low pressure, it may starve injectors and damage some… are you getting lots of smoke like the video?

Thanks for the praise! What you’re running into may be an injector cup or head gasket issue, that can happen from a few things. There are some upgraded kits out there. @bryanbuilt360
@bryanbuilt360 11 месяцев назад
@@jamesschultz30 the tricky thing with that is they may all pass buzz test because the solenoids are working fine. It’s possible one of the injectors may have had debris in it from manufacturing or installation or past the fuel filter that damaged the internals. It sounds like one might be leaking down after shutdown and over night then it clears out of the dish of the piston when you go for a drive. Mine took a little while to clear out after the new one was installed in this video. Might be worth it to try and hit each cylinder with the infrared thermometer when you start up to pinpoint which cylinder might be the causal

I have alot of white smoke coming from my 7.3 just stater few days ago . My main issue or focus has been on the oil leaks first and foremost it was leaking from the hpop bolt access cover and the oil pump its self took care or that with new oil.pump and new gasket and cover for the hpop cover . Now the only other leak I have to address is the oil pan gasket it's pours out of there smh. So once I fixed those leaks and was left with just the oil pan leak I still had to get him I started driven home and at a red light it just went to letting out insane amount of smoke I thought for a sec it was on fire people riden by thought the same and honked to get my attention as if I didn't see the massive cloud of smoke coming out my exhaust. Thought maybe the oil was getting on the exhaust and burning off but wasn't the case . I will be attacking the oil pan leak tomorrow since it's the one that requires more time and more urgency. But once I finally get the oil leak issue all solved and it's no longer leaking where do I begin the hunt or the elimination process on addressing the white smoke problem. Sorry for the long comment on your video man but it's the only video I seen that seemed close to my same issue and I'm outta options and ideas on what to do with this 7.3 almost Want to give up and sell it or something any help be TREMENDOUSLY APPRECIATED

@bryanbuilt360 11 месяцев назад
Hey man, good luck with the oil pan! That’s a bear of a job on anything with a 7.3! For your case I would start with checking all the fluids, white smoke usually means coolant coolant burning but also check for a grayish tint to it. Check for the cross contamination, diesel smell on the dipstick or, rainbow oil slick in the coolant bottle. Also check if it’s losing coolant. Check those things and let me know what you find, message with any questions!

Great video man your way to explain is perfect.. I’m a put everything to practice. On my 97 7.3 My issue is that cylinder no. 2 after a couple of minutes is not heating like the rest. The other 7 range between 130-145ish but number 2 was around 86. I just started my truck a few days ago after putting a high volume hpop, 180/30 injectors, new valve cover gaskets and a new main wire harness. Oh and did fuel bowl delete and went with an electric fuel pump.. and the main issue that I was attempting to fix by doing all this is that when I first start the truck it idles really rough (sounds like a gas drag car) for like 30 seconds then it evens out. I disconnect the ICP sensor then start it and it starts normal (no rough idle) so I’ve already tried 2 new icp sensors thinking it was that and it still does the same thing.. both sensors were from O’Reillys not motorcraft you think it might be that they were both defective? Or in your experience what else could be causing that? Thanks
@bryanbuilt360
@bryanbuilt360 10 месяцев назад
Few things here… how many miles are on the truck? I think it’s great you’ve narrowed it to number 2 cylinder! But if you have to unplug the ICP to help start, that sounds like the injector o-rings are leaking and not building enough pressure from the HPOP OR the IPR solenoid or quill is not functioning properly. Before I had this issue, on my original set of injectors it was doing some of the strangest stuff, it would stall when decelerating, wouldn’t start unless the block heater was plugged in. I had original injectors with high mileage that were just worn out.
@luisg8a
@luisg8a 10 месяцев назад
The truck has 170k miles, the injectors are new I was really careful putting them in and lubed them up really good before I installed them so I want to think it’s not the O rings plus it’s doing the exact same thing it was doing with the old injectors plus that number 2 injector that’s not firing now

@bryanbuilt360

Hey Will, that’s a good question. With miles up there, I would think that condition is caused by the internal mechanisms of the injectors are a little worn out. When the truck is shut off, what fuel is left in the injector is probably leaking down into the cylinder and then that excess fuel is burning off at startup. My next question would be if the truck is consuming engine oil?

Hey buddy i have 1 injector not firing. It’s #3. I swapped out the injector with a rebuilt injector I have and still no fire. Passes the buzz test. Im lost on what to do next. Truck ran great before I upgraded my injectors a year ago. I put a brand new wiring harness in it and new valve cover gaskets. Replaced all the sensors with motor craft. Upgrade to the E-fuel kit. New injector cups. Im at a loss and on the verge of giving up after all this money I’ve put in it

If it passes buzz test that’s great, solenoids good. I would fire it up with the valve cover off and see if oil comes out of the spout at the top of the injector. If that’s happening then the only thing (kinda) left is the injector tip is clogged on both, or low compression in that cylinder and it’s not firing. Smell the oil and check for diesel fuel smell… There’s a possibility the IDM might be having an issue that’s where checking if oil is coming out the spout would be good.

I need some pointers on a recently purchased 7.3 of mine.. got the truck with rough idle and loss of power, ive ran through the fuel system front to back, i did away with the 2 "filter" cups in the tank since there is a filter up front, replaced the inline fuel pump on drivers side frame rail, checked fuel bowl under the hood, replaced filter, and still.. rough idle, no power... hooked my buddys matco scanner to it, and got a code for "no connection with pcm - IDM.... is it a bad IDM? Again, truck runs, but doesnt run well... there is zero smoke from exhaust, and little to no blow by from oil cap and i figured the little blow by is probably due to the misfire.

How many miles on it? Will it only start when it’s warm or plugged in? I have another injector diagnosis video in my channel that was why I put new injectors in this. I had all sorts of weird issues and it was just that the injectors were worn out mechanically and computer couldn’t pick up on it…

@bryanbuilt360 140,000 on the truck, it looks to be an old fleet truck. Fuel system underneath and break lines are spotless, you could eat off of them they are that clean. I'm getting codes p1316, p0603, p0232, p1670, p1690, p1119, p0113, p0198, p0237, p0472, p1280. The truck once started runs and idles what seems to be fine, it goes into high idle and cleans out at higher RPM, turbo wastewater seems to open and close during high idle almost causing like a "lope" to the truck and then when you hit the break it idles fine until you put it in drive or reverse, then it falls on its face and absolutely runs terrible.. those codes that I just sent however, upon doing the scan on it, KOEO, scan the first time 6 codes, KOEO, scan again, 12 codes. KOEO, scan again, 3 codes... so, I'm lost.

@@jakedashley8255 someone else the other day was asking practically the same thing. I suggested to check the harness on the drivers side sometimes they rub on the valve cover and create issues. Second thing is the neutral safety switch on the transmission. If your scanner can show what gear the selector is in, check that they line up with what the indicator in the gauge says. Sometimes they get messed up and the range sensor tells the pcm what to do in reverse when you’re actually in drive. The easier hot start is telling me the injectors might be on their way out

I don't understand what the thermal gun does by looking at the exhaust pipes. If I understand your video the hot cylinder was the bad one. Why was that exhaust pipe so hot if it was not firing? What am I missing? Also, if a person can't find a piggyback jumper like you had they could always go directly to the connector on the valve cover and carefully touch the pins of the connector since they are male spades on the valve cover. Thanks for letting me know the power line is the middle line and the other four are the grounds from the IDM. I use AllData and could not figure that out after looking at their electrical diagrams.
@bryanbuilt360
@bryanbuilt360 2 года назад
Great question. So the tip of the injector was cracked and what was happening is that cylinder was getting excessive fuel and burning hotter. If there was an injector not firing (bad solenoid) it would be cooler. I hope that explanation helps!
@bryanbuilt360
@bryanbuilt360 2 года назад
As for the connector, you may be able to slide a paper clip in the back side where the wires go through the rubber. If not, the only way to check the solenoids with it unplugged would be to go to the male connectors but that can be tricky with clearance. I would not recommend to probe through the factory harness, from what I can tell they are no longer available from Ford

Answer me this if you can. When Ford says “DTCs P1271-P1278 indicate a low side-to-high side open in the circuit between the IDM and the injector.” Does that mean the power wire from the IDM is the high side and the grounds from the IDM are the low side?
@bryanbuilt360
@bryanbuilt360 2 года назад
@@joehelf ok, so that would mean there is an issue with the current that runs between the power and ground to an injector solenoid. We can’t rule out all the wires from the IDM to the UCVH. Did you check the main harness by the driver side valve cover? Actually, what exactly are your vehicles symptoms?
