The pattern shown in the video sounds more like a 7/16, with the semi-quavers broken up into 2+2+3 if you listen to the drum beat. The really fucked up part is when the pulsing vocals come in (the video cuts off before this happens). This little vocal bit repeats every 4 semiquavers, so yeah this is a 7:4 polyrhythm! It cycles through twice before going into the bridge, pretty insane.

7 really works for fast paced jams and moshes because you have to follow every beat, if you chill and try to bop to the 2nd beat you'll miss beat 1. So its kinda punishing and encourages more movement in crowds. There's a push/pull to it. The more chill, progy/jazzy instances are less intense/physical so it feels more like a mental exercise, which I like too

just speculating, but I think the influence of non-western music, where odd time is more present, definitely played a role. they've always drawn influence from world music and i think definitely immersed themselves in middle eastern music when prepping for the microtonal banana album, and probably internalized a lot of those rhythms which bled into the songwriting.
@Reversed82
@Reversed82 5 лет назад
i think they use especially 7/4 so much because it feels natural when combined with their often (i feel like any way) kraut rock type rhythms (like e.g. in evil death roll) where the kick and hat are in a pretty straight, consistent pattern, resulting in a more groovy but still kraut-rock style beat. honestly i think they don't get enough credit for the insane rhythms in polygondwanaland, especially in crumbling castle, the 7 against 6 in and 5 against 4 ( i think) in the transitions are absolutely nuts

Tbh it's actually really common. Jazz and classical musicians love it, psych rock and prog rock uses it a lot too. So as time signatures outside of the regulars, it's pretty common. Only 2/2, 2/4, 4/4, 3/4, and 6/8 are really common. And even then 3/4, 2/2, and 6/8 would be more common in traditional dance music. 5/4 is one that jazz and classical musicians mess with. It's also common in Balkan dance music. However, The River by King Gizz is the first time I've ever heard a pattern like that with it...it's REALLY creative. I've found that in a lot of their 7/4 songs they construct riffs that play on all 7 beats. It's not always the case but they do it a lot. Whereas The River makes it harder to pick out its 5/4 time because they don't play on each beat. And most composers I know tend to take on odd time signatures a lot just because...well when you've practiced for thousands and thousands of hours, 4/4 and 3/4 are just...boring. They're predictable. You feel like you're falling into a formula and it's harder to set yourself apart from others. I also felt like I was stagnating in my abilities to play my instruments, and I wasn't being as creative when coming up with riffs or themes. Time signatures are a restriction. Restrictions can breed creativity. So if you give yourself a restriction that's less common, you stand out more.

It's 4/4 Fun fact: Their first (or one of the first) odd time signature experiment is in that same album. Title track, Float Along - Fill Your Lungs, wich is in 5/8. Fun fact about the fun fact: Lucas, their bassist, had his own side project back in 2013, Atolls, and he released a song called Old Rosie which has a really, REALLY similar melody. And a similar odd time signature. Intro is 4 bars of 11/8 or 6/8 + 5/8. Followed by a part with 3 bars of 5/8 + 1 bar of 6/8. Really interesting. It was released in April, 2013 and FAFYL was released September, 2013. Guess we'll never know which one was conceived first. It really don't matter, I'm just curious because of their similarities.

Three recurring things that they do are: 1) using groupings of two dotted 8th and four 8th noted like this: |O-O-O-O-O--O--| (Bonus point, if you take away two 8th notes, you get a good 5/4 rhythm O-O-O--O-- ) 2) Using a straight kick-snare pattern that goes over two bars making them essentially a one 14/4 bar: |K-S-K-S-K-S-K-|S-K-S-K-S-K-S-| 3) Using any kind of polyrhythm over 7 that diverts attention from the underlying pattern.

part of the reason they have so many 7/4 songs is due to their use of the motif in nonagon infinity! plus the theme of polygondwanaland seems to be polyrhythms, which invites the use of goofy time signatures. i think the boys just like writing in 7/4- it's fun and it meshes well with their style. they do 9/4 and 11/4 and 5/4 a lot too, it kind of goes with the territory. (you can find a ton of 9/4 in nonagon infinity, which is fitting).

I don't know if anyone else has mentioned, but the place where I personally found the most 7/8 or 7/4 songs is in Yugoslavian prog rock. Especially the band Leb i sol from Macedonia. To us from the Balkans, these rhythms "feel" normal, because they fall under our tradition. Just as you mentioned about the click, those rhythms are about feeling it more than equal division of time. That is what makes it so intoxicatingly good. If you are up for a listen, listen to Leb i Sol first album, it is uploaded on youtube. Also give a listen to Den za Den, also a progressive rock band Macedonia.

It's not acoustic music (mostly), but if you're looking for some more 7/4 madness, Venetian Snares is remarked for his extensive use of 7/4 and other strange signatures.

King gizzard makes odd time signatures sound so normal sometimes that it can be easy to miss For example, Both Greenhouse Heat death and The Great Chain of being use 13/4 time in the verses (subdivided as 4-4-5), and in their recent song "Witchcraft" the verse uses 9/8 with a bar of 8/8 at the end of each phrase, and I originally thought these songs were simply in 4/4 without further analysis

Awesome content. Whilst I've often been able to recognised signatures that aren't 4/4, I don't have the theoretical knowledge (or perhaps mathematical intelligence) to decipher them. I now completely get 7/8. Thanks! I would be great if the Septuple meter page were updated to include the gizz songs that you've analysed.
@daveconnor6174
@daveconnor6174 4 года назад
Agreed! I think the wiki page is held back by requiring a reference for each song, which is tricky because there aren't many quality references for these things. The only Gizz song on there is The River, and the reference is an article that just says that The River has 7/8 in it, even though it doesn't lol This video might qualify as a reference, but I don't know if videos are allowed. Anyway, thanks! Glad you enjoyed the video :)

“countdown” is such a good song bc the time signature changes from 4/4, 5/4, 6/4 all the way to 9/4 i think in like the same verse. its crazy

There's a great song by Clipping., "Story 2", that does something very similar, but it goes even further with it. Check it if you haven't! Sorry, 'bout the unsolicitedness of this, but I can never miss an opportunity to recommend this song to someone :p

Woah, dude you should make more vids on music theory in certain bands! that was awesome. I always knew there is something weird about King Gizzard music but since I know little about music theory I didn't know what was it, (except for the microtonal system thing). People say that good music should defend by itself. But it's cool when a good music which defends itself can have something more behind it than just... goood music. It's amazing what King Gizzard is doing right now...

7/4 and 7/8 were always extremely easy for me because I'm from the Balkans and a lot of popular folk music uses it. Even some of our football chants are in 7/8!
@daveconnor6174
@daveconnor6174 3 года назад
i love that! i'd love to hear a chant in 7/8 - so wild i have a feeling that they were influenced by balkan music tbh.
@edonslow1456

My favourite groove in 7/4 is to have the snare on 3, count 1-2-3-4-1-2-3. The 3 end beats are like their own little bonus area in the bar where you can really get creative. Paranoid Android does this rhythm. Of all the non 4/4 or 3/4 signatures, I find it's one of the most natural of the 'odd' time signatures if you play this groove.

Also, I'd love to see more videos like this, analyzing artists and albums and such. I officially request an MGMT analysis video on their sound design, deeply layered soundscapes (Little Dark Age and MGMT self-titled in particular) or something else they do uniquely. Subbed!

Awesome vid man I’m so glad this was in my recommended vids. This band blows my songwriting mind. I can’t comprehend. It’s just breathtaking what they accomplish. I’d love to see a video or some research on how they write songs. On nonagon, it seems like the whole album is centered around that reoccurring riff, just different ways to branch off from it. However, that theory doesn’t really work with any other album so I’m stumped.
