In 1845 when the beaver had gone extinct in most of Europe a Norwegian landowner Jacob Aall owning land in the range of the remaining Norwegian beaver population protected it in his forests. Later in 1898 the beaver became protected nationally. At that time it was extinct in Sweden and most of Europe except 4 or 5 locations including the Norwegian population. Efforts to redistribute the beaver in the wild nationally and to export the beaver to other countries started already early in the 20th century from Norway. The Devon beavers are in part or fully decendants of these Norwegian beavers ❤

I live in Upper Michigan. Beavers live on my land and their activities bring in many other species. Brook trout, cranes and herons, ducks and a many other birds will come. You need to have beavers on all your streams if you expect a healthy environment.🐝🐝

Any otters in the River Otter? If so how do they get on with the beavers? If all the beavers are related, does this pose any inbreeding problems?

good questions! I was wondering those too and would love to see an update.

At 7.50 he mentions flow devices to allow water through the dams. Could mini turbines/screw generators be added in the flow? The electricity demand & price spikes in the early evening. This could sway some farmers in favour of the beavers. The Centre for Alternative Technology may be a good place to start.

So the beaver were returned to their habitat with stories of being abducted by aliens and prodded and tested. Hmm, sounds a little familiar!

Balance in nature… now to be sure people can’t build houses where the beavers slow the water down and plant it.

As wonderful as these animals are, I have to wonder if reintroducing them after 400 years of civilization changing so much - are beavers now an invasive species? I mean, 400 years ago they must have had predators other than man to keep populations in check. I’m guessing those species are all also long gone now. The beavers are doing amazing things, but without natural predators, won’t their numbers continue to increase unchecked so that they’ll start migrating to waterways where they become real pests? I’m just thinking out loud.

There motivation for doing this is saving grassland wildflowers doesn't make a lot of sense. Beavers don't go very far from the water so as the trees push out away from the rivers bank they will be well outside of the range that trees will be felled.

How do beavers add canals, they fart the sides of the stream banks, or more likely dig like hell where it is wet and muddy
@gordonwaldner9792
@gordonwaldner9792 11 месяцев назад
It mostly digging but they also excavate by repeatedly dragging branches along the same route. I found a beaver canal dug about 800m on my daughter's property that led to the pond through a birch and poplar bush.

Since there are no wolves in the UK and the only beaver predator I can think of is the fox, is there a danger of too many beavers ?
@johnd1655
@johnd1655 11 месяцев назад
it would take hundreds of generations of unabated breeding and movement for beaver overpopulation to occur. Even when wolves and large cats roamed the UK there were millions of beavers.

It's an unlikely risk but worth considering. In Argentina the introduction of about 20 breeding pairs (iirc) in Tierra del Fuego province in1946 has resulted in an out-of-control population today of over 100,000 beavers. This region didn't previously have beavers, so the local vegetation hasn't been able to cope, and deforestation has resulted. In England beavers were a native species till the fur industry wiped them out, so this is less likely to be a problem. In addition, Devon is much more heavily populated and intensively farmed. The river valleys in south and east Devon into which these beavers have been introduced are quite steep and short and separated from each other. Also as you move up river the rock type often changes and the longer rivers such as the Exe and Dart come down through hard granitic moorland where trees don't grow, so not beaver-friendly. The area where the beaver studies are being conducted, lower down nearer the coast, are thus naturally quite well isolated.

Kind of weird how sometimes you get an evolutionary slam dunks like beavers. I mean there is alot of evolutionary shit predicated on environment alone. Take them out. Do we ever get to anything resembling a primate?
